Welcome to Morningwood #1

Gingerbred Lessons

Rate this book
A forbidden love that neither can ignore

Kicked out by his mother, Harris—college freshman and impala shifter—goes to live with his aunt in Morningwood, a town unlike any other.

Morningwood is home to a menagerie of shifters from the wolves and lions of Predator Point, to the fun-loving cows and horses in Barnyard Court, and everything else Harris could possibly imagine.

In the normie world, Harris had to hide who he was, but in Morningwood, they celebrate their animal differences. He’s excited to start his new life, and first on the list is continuing his education at the only university in town.

Morningwood is also home to Andrew Boothe, alpha puma shifter, teacher and dean of Morningwood University. From first sight, sparks fly between Harris and Andrew. They know they must deny their attraction but their inner beasts will not be ignored. No matter how forbidden, love finds a way.

Gingerbred Lessons is the first book in the Welcome to Morningwood Omegaverse series. It features a first time, age gap romance that may not jingle everyone’s bells.

I really liked this book, however it's sequel is better. Despite one glaring part of the story I loved all the rest. Due to that one thing I reduced what would have been a 5 star rating to 4. My explanation reveals some of the plot twists so don't click the spoiler link unless you don't mind knowing. I thought the author did an exceptional job of creating all the wonderful people in this book, many who were in book 2 of the series that I had already read. I also LOVED this world of Morningwood (Giggle) that she has created and given life too. I am certainly hoping we will get more books in this series (I hope to see Dusty's story, if he ends up being Bi or Gay and hopefully more!)

I think that this is the beginning of a beautiful new series from one of my favorite authors!

Morningwood - OK, yes, giggle, hehe, because that's the best name for a town I can think of! (OK, I guess Intercourse, PA is still #1) Morningwood is a town where shifters of all types can come to live and thrive safely. There are all sorts of shifters - herd animals, farm/barn animals, water shifters, air shifters, predatory shifters, you name it.

Harris has been sent here by his mother, who sends him away after she worries that her "normie" boyfriend will freak. Harris is reluctant to come to a new town, and has to deal with settling in to a new school, making friends, and finding a job. He also meets the Dean of the college - Andrew Boothe, and the connection between the two is electric. They try to fight it at first - after all, Andrew is decades older and his dean at the school, but they give in and sexyfuntimes commence. Some angst, some drama, but a lovely HEA and I hope that we'll see more of Andrew and Harris in future stories.

Hello hotness - age gap, teacher/student, interspecies animal pairing, first time, this book had so many things that I love to read about!

Can't wait for Maddox's story, and hopefully Dusty can find a HEA, too!

I liked the beginning of this series. Harris is sweet but a little lost, especially with his flaky mother. He starts over in Morningwood and feels attraction right away for Andrew. When he realizes that Andrew is the dean at his new college, things get complicated.

Awesome shifter town, with so many shifter species. I liked how some of their names related to their animal. However, the whole shifting thing was kind of glossed over and I think Harris only shifts once in the whole book.

The relationship between Harris and Andrew starts off very quickly, even though it's taboo. Lot's of insta-love here.

I must say that the name of this town was funny. This was the first book in the "Welcome to Morningwood Omegaverse Romance" series. Harris is an impala shifter who lives in the normal world with his mother when she gets married she puts him out so he goes to live in Morningwood with his Aunt Hallie. While driving into town he sees a man that makes him blush and sweat. When he meets with the dean of his new college it's the man that he saw. Andrew Boothe, alpha puma shifter, teacher and dean of Morningwood University. These two have sparks but Andrew knows that they shouldn't be together. While at his new school Harris begins making new friends Dusty who is a horse 🐎 shifter and Maddox who is some kind of big cat. This was a good short quick read. I have read this Author before this book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I’m going to go ahead and give this four stars. I almost dropped it down to three because of the cheesy way that Andrew and Harris got caught and eventually got their HEA. Even with the bad plot twist I really enjoyed this book. I also loved Morningwood. I’m certainly going to check out the rest of the series.

I have mixed feelings about this book. Kiki Burrelli is one of my go to authors. Gingerbread Lessons had to grow on me.

I enjoyed the Age gap and the very lite domination that was going on but I've never had to warm up to one of her books before. The characters somehow where a disconnect for me. I, maybe in the minority with this but we'll see how book 2 goes. Even though Maddox is an prick.

Ok. I have to put this out there. How many of you have reverted to being a teen like me and snickering over the name of this town? I can't help it, it cracks me up. I'm so pitiful lol.  But, getting past the name, this was a good book. I love the shifter theme, the alpha/Omega, it was all good. And for you May/December fans, there is one in here. And we’ve also crept into virgin territory. So all the goodies.
I felt bad for Harris. He seems like the sweetest guy. Well, no seems to it really. He is. He wants to help and make people happy, but being who he is, confrontation or aggressiveness makes him want to run. And fast. He never seems to have many friends. If any at all. He tries to just remain closed in on himself as much as he can to stay hidden. Invisible. Always in the back. That saddens me. And his mother, the twat, has decided Harris isn't good enough to be around her 'normie’ boyfriend and Harris has to leave. That right there just pissed me off so bad. And the sad part is, some parents really do this crap. Smh. So he goes to live with his aunt in this shifter community of Morningwood. At least now maybe he doesn't have to hide who he is. But his first two days in town don't start off well and they seem to be getting worse. He's being picked on badly and he keeps opening his mouth at the wrong time. Plus, he's just seen the man of his dreams and he's the DEAN. Oh but sweet, little Harris has no idea what he's in for. Andrew smells it immediately. Mine.
Trying to fit in when you aren't normal is so hard. Trying to fit in when you're around other kind shouldn't be so hard, but apparently it is. Harris can't seem to catch a break. All he knows, all he's consumed with is Andrew. Especially when Andrew goes against his own judgement and kisses him. Holy smokes it was HAWT! Truthfully, Andrew is just as consumed. But it makes me sad because they think, well Andrew thinks….knows, it could be a bad idea. Since he's the Dean and Harris the student. Plus being two different shifters. There's a little turmoil involved in here. Things get a little too much with some others. And a scare sends everything tumbling down. And I wanted to cry for Harris. He just wanted his man.
This is such a good May/December. It's funny when thoughts of responsibility go by the wayside for the other. They live to make each other happy and it's a sweet book. Lots of steaminess too. A good start to the series.

Harris Bovidae got kicked out by his mother because her human husband doesn't know about shifters. Luckily he has an aunt to go live with in a town full of shifters, named Morningwood. In this new town, his true nature is encouraged and he will be attending classes st the university in town. The university where the Dean, Andrew Boothe, turns out to be a tempting, forbidden Alpha that Omega Harris cant seem to ignore. Can their may/December, predator/prey love find a way?

Sweet, sexy, hilarious and just a touch of angst/drama. In true Kiki Burrelli fashion, this book will make you laugh and smile... and crave more of the series.

It wasn't the worst thing I've ever read, I liked the characters. Just seemed like the relationship progressed super quickly.

Gonna check out the next book in the series; one assumes that later books will be better than previous books.

Probably won't be rereading this one ever.

Morningwood is my new favorite town.

Not just because of the snorts if laughter at the name. I love this world and cannot wait for more. Harris and Andrew are stubborn, wonderful, and their story will cause you to laugh and slam their heads together.

4.5 stars.

For a first in a series, I am fairly impressed with GingerBRED Lessons. Yes, my spellcheck gives me hassles when I type it out, but it wasn't until I finished reading this book did I realize my eyes had misread the title all along. (Bad pun!!) Another thing that amazed me was how well-written it was for just 148 pages! I don't expect novel-worthy material tied up in a novella-length book. And I wasn't spending my time checking to see how much more I had until the end.

I'm not much into "academy" stories because I have to endure cliques. I hate cliques, having gone to a private parochial school until college. College was the beginning of a new freedom I had a chance to experience in which I WAS an adult! Not a child. I liked that aspect about Gingerbred Games because of that (despite how Harris' mom saw it). There is a huge change between high school and college that mentally happens... or should mentally happen. So I appreciate the fact that Kiki Burrelli focuses on that aspect as it saves me from having to deal with a subgenre I'm not terribly interested in. Harris is an adult. In fact, he's had to be an adult for so many years due to the less-than-motherly supervision by his biological mother. Hell, his Aunt Hallie did a far better job as a responsible parental type in Harris' life!

As for Andrew, Harris' love and dean of the Morningwood University, I do appreciate his points of view on how treacherous his and Harris' paths were once they started their relationship. Sure, a lot of this book was head games with a ton of mental consideration of what was going on, but isn't that was this book is all about? Learning how to be an adult? Learning how to have a responsible friendship? How to be a good partner in a relationship? I could see how easily it would had been for Ms. Burrelli could have taken the safe and easy route by using a handful of overused subplot templates, but she didn't. That kept me reading as I wanted to enjoy a good story, not something someone slammed together just to meet a deadline.

I liked exploring a well-hidden world of shifters — LOTS of shifters! — including herbivores like impalas (Harris and Hallie), pumas (Andrew), horses (Dusty and his family), Maddox (tiger), even Sophie and her family (the resident tarantulas!) So many species to consider!! Talk about diversity! It was so much fun to enjoy the effort Ms. Burrelli put into her world-building. I was about to say I can't wait for her next book to come out, only to discover that there are eight more books to read! I only hope they are as good as this one.

In the picturesque town of Morningwood a 20 year old Impala antelope is sent to stay with his aunt. His relationship with his mother is less than ideal. He was raised in "normie" society and never got to live life as a free shifter. Something he is able to do immediately upon his arrival in Morningwood. But he is very self-conscious always - ready to run or hide, giving off fear vibes to everyone around him. For some people they have to be torn all the way down before they can build up to who they were meant to be. Others blossom through the power of unconditional love, acceptance, and protection.

Living in this without the restrictive attitudes and beliefs of "normies" always keeping him from achieving his full potential. Unfortunately there were also some shifter bullies who made him equally as skittish and jumpy. But an attraction, a love so forbidden it had to be kept secret made his confidence improve by leaps and bounds. He loved with everything in him, making him feel invincible with his "superhero" lover to look out for him. He began to feel his worth & confidence as if he held the world on a string. His life kept improving until it all crashed around him.

This story involves a number of themes: age differences, bullying, when someone doesn't take No for an answer, violating academic norms, shifters versus normies, learning to believe in one's self, the importance of friendship, how much a broken heart actually hurts, Mommy Dearest, you deserve better than me.

I really enjoyed this First book taking place in the town of Morningwood. I look forward to the rest of the books in the series. Kiki Burelli has become a wonderful author who is an entertaining storyteller. And she knows how to keep the reader turning the pages, but dreading finally coming to the end of one of her sweet angsty tales.

I learned a new term "normie" that means non-shifter or Normal which is why the town of Morningwood is so important to many different species of shifters. I'm just so glad the tarantula though a really nice person is a young woman so I don't have to worry about reading - actually skipping her story.

Shifters, male-Mpreg, Age Difference, College Dean/Student, abusive family, on page sex, gender binary, alpha/omega
This is book two in the Morningwood Omegaverse and much of the story happens concurrently so I would recommend reading both, but I believe they could either be read as a stand-alone.
Morningwood is a shifter only town where everyone can be themselves. Burrelli's world as insect, arachnid, barnyard, and predator shifters. Basically, if it's not a plant there seems to be a shifter version. This town is completely off the human government grid. They have their own college with a Track and Field Team. The coach is a Gorilla Shifter Omega. That apparently means that he's more submissive than an Alpha shifter and capable of being impregnated by his mate regardless of sex (ie a male Aplpha can impregnate a male Omega).
A Gazelle student and the Mountain Lion Dean of the College? I like that both the heroes were aware of the power issues at play and it was discussed. The fact that the "Omega" had a rough childhood meant he was more mature than might be expected of a 20 yr old too. I think this plot had a bunch of potential issues but it managed to be a pretty straightforward and fairly fun read. I liked that the author had content warnings in the beginning and let you know there was an HEA, too many authors seem to think that's a spoiler. I don't. I like knowing that the bumps along the way will be worked out and everything will be alright in the end. I think that in the conflict the Dean made the worst possible decision and forgiveness came a little to easily but maybe that's just me. I enjoyed this and will read the next one. I do think that readers who find age gaps, experience level disparity, or power dynamic play distasteful should pass on this one.

So I did like this and enjoyed most of the characters. What I guess I didn't like was the ending. *SPOILER* It's fine with me if you want these guys to have an HEA but you can't have one person abandon the other and come back and then 5 minutes later they are engaged to be married. I felt like Andrew was manipulative and was all like I stayed away because I cared but I checked in on you so you're still mine. It just rubbed me the wrong way and I think it could have been done better. Like I said, fine that they got back together but maybe it could have taken some more effort on Andrew's part. I am sure I will read the next book as long as I like the blurb.

Great new series

I loved this new series by Kiki Burrelli! I have to wonder how Morningwood manages to maintain the level of political and social isolation that they've established. And with that isolation/freedom, why would they allow Harris' mother to be permitted outside if she was such a threat to the keeping of their secret? For them, I would imagine that threatening exposure as she did would be just as bad as yelling 'fire' in a crowd, and would be just as legally punishable.

Harris was such a cute and lovable character! This was a really easy read with a diverse group of characters that I enjoyed reading about.

We get two points of view. Harris and Andrew. Through their eyes we learn a lot about their friends and acquaintances, but the book still feels completely about Harris and Andrew while at the same time giving a curiosity about other characters. I am very excited to read the next book about Maddox!

I can’t add the mpreg tag on this book, but I will say, there is mpreg in this universe, so it’s totally possible, it just didn’t happen here.

I love Kiki Burrelli!!!

Every time I read one of her books I get to lose myself in an amazing shifter world and this new series is no exception. What makes this one such a joy is that it’s a town full of shifters of all different kinds. I love this. Yes wolves, bears, and dragons are hot but whose to say that non predator shifters can’t be. With so many types of animals in the world the possibilities are endless. I look forward to seeing where the author takes this.

This was such a cute read, I couldn't put it down. The characters were dynamic and so real. I loved that they had more agency than normal rom-com characters who just want to fall in love. Even side characters were flushed out and felt so real. The world building and story structure was interesting too.

The only reason this wasn't a full five was because I wanted justice for the way his mom acted. That felt like. Loose end that I wish would have been wrapped up.

Sweet story

Interesting world building. Growly alpha. Clever omega. Low angst. No mPreg in this story, although it's possible in this world.

Distracting typos, mostly words that may have fallen prey to an autocorrect--woozy for doozy, bear/bare--but the errors seemed less common in the second half, and I got over it. I'd read the next in the series, if similar length.

Very nice

If you are a Kiki fan, just know this shifter series doesn’t follow all the same rules as other universes of hers.
I loved the story though. Harris learning life and finding his way was nice. School was there, but not overly written about.
And it definitely made me cry.

These two are really meant for each other and it was so sad to see them torn apart by fear and a crazy mom. I so glad to see how Harris grows and learns to stand up for himself. I also like the integrity that Andrew shows that even coming back he makes sure that things don't have a shadow over them.

Cute but not unbearably so!

I almost didn’t pick up the series because I was afraid it would be too cute. It really is adorable, but misses the too-cutesy mark by a comfortable margin. Fun, sweet Christmasy romance.

A good story until the „dramatic“ ending.... spoiler ahead:

Sorry, but LEAVING your supposed love of your life to cope ALONE with a disapproving town is not cool. Im so angey with Andrew for being such a wimp. And he didnt grovel enough. Deleted for weak romance
