What I Loved: If there's one thing I've come to expect from Robinson is that he has a non-stop ride packed in his novels. When you read so much fiction, you come to expect certain things, but Robinson keeps the surprises coming all the way to the end. Aside from the plot twists, Robinson has an impressive way of mirroring Biblical truths. There were several times when I had an "ah-ha" moment and even felt ministered to. I wasn't always on board with some of the images the characters saw in their minds when they were on the verge of dying or being saved, but I found the rest to be equal to my understanding of the Bible's teachings. Robinson ties all of this together with great visuals. There is an attention to detail and historical setting. The war violence at times was on the graphic side. I've read a lot of war fiction over the years so I'm not as bothered by this, but I can see where others will be. But overall, this is an impressive Christian novel. Rating and Recommendation: I'm giving In the Shadow of Your Wings 4.5 stars and recommend it to those who enjoy Christian Historical fiction or Christian WWI fiction. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Thomas Steele, the head of the Bank of England and the Earl of Northshire, hopes the Great War will finally give his wayward son and heir, Malcolm, a meaningful occupation. Leila Durand, a German spy, finds her mission and her conscience are compromised when she falls in love with Malcolm Steele. And the war seems ripe to rip away everything Eleanor Thompson, a young wife and mother, loves…In the Shadow of Your Wings by author JP Robinson.
It didn't take long for this first book in the Northshire Heritage series to draw me in. The author effectively sets a stage both vivid and ominous, and he gives close attention to atmospheric detail all the way through the novel. Violence, danger, and pain pulse off of the pages, and flashes of wisdom and hope bring sparks of light at moments in the story.
Unfortunately, as interested as I was to find out where the story was going, it didn't quite reach a place where I fully enjoyed it. On a technical note, numerous errors and inconsistencies in punctuation and grammar throughout the book took a toll on my reading experience.
For me, the story's points of light didn't quite balance out the depictions and weight of gloom, tragedy, and human depravity. Given the ruinous note on which one of the storylines cut off well before the end of the book, I wasn't sure what the related characters' personal lives really added to the plot, besides showing the characters' dysfunction and corruption. As for a few of the other main players, they didn't arrive at convincing or compelling enough places for me to feel more satisfied and intrigued than tense and ungratified by all of the unresolved matters at the book's finish.
While it's unlikely I'll continue the series, I do see the appeal this novel may have for other fans of historical ChristFic and wartime sagas, and hopefully some of the technical issues in the writing will improve in the future. ________ I received a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.
An epic tale during the WWI era. Spies, lies and surprising family ties. Interesting characters, intriguing plot with many twists. I was riveted. Faith and redemption are woven in to further enhance the story. My only complaint is that the story ended in a cliff-hanger. Excellent book. I highly recommend!
Another great historical story from J.P. Robinson! In the Shadow of Your Wings moves between characters in Germany and Great Britain during war time. Leila Durand is a German spy with a troubled past who falls in love with Malcom, the son of Thomas Steele, a British icon, whose home she is to infiltrate. She struggles between her love for Germany and her love for an enemy of Germany, and trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes.
Eleanor Thompson is a woman of faith, but her faith is pushed to its very limits when her infant daughter is killed in a German air raid after her husband has gone off to fight in the war. However, Eleanor doesn't give up on life as she remains hopeful to reunite with her husband when the war is over, but he doesn't answer any of her letters. As she sees the horrors of war, she begins to lose hope, yet stubbornly clings to her faith.
J.P. Robinson weaves a tale of intrigue and history as these characters' lives intertwine in unexpected ways. There is also a German family that takes center stage in some chapters. This book shows the heartbreak of war and the struggle for faith. It is my favorite of Mr. Robinson's book so far.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves historical fiction that includes intrigue and suspense.
In the Shadow of Your Wings is the first book I have had the privilege of reading from J.P. Robinson, and I am not quite sure how I missed reading his books before now. He draws you in so quickly to the story and the plight of his characters you cannot help but be involved with their story. I loved the historical detail he wove into it, and I thought it added a realistic depth to the storyline. Plus, I thought his use of a group of characters was very well done and that you really got a sense of knowing all the characters in play.
The dark verses light battle that is playing out in this book (and the next which I am currently reading) is interesting and shows that the light is not always easy to see or find. But I am enjoying J. P. Robinson’s thought-provoking conversations and the suspense! A very action-packed series so far.
4 out of 5 stars.
*I volunteered tor read this book in return for my honest feedback. The thoughts and opinions expressed within are my own.
Wow! Wow! Wow!! It's been awhile since I've had a novel capture my imagination and heart like In the Shadow of Your Wings did. JP Robinson, where have you been all my life???
Typically World War I is not a subject that I feel drawn to, and honestly haven't read too many historical novels from this setting, but Mr. Robinson changed all that! Though heavily character driven, I never felt lost, and was instantly entranced in this war saga that shows multiple, diverse characters amid a truly depressing backdrop: the heart of World War I.
As you witness members of the British and German communities coming into the war in various roles, you see a first-hand account of each individuals points of view. So many lives changed, and so much war, but the author does a magnificent job of keeping things PG without losing the impact of the ravages of war. There are some pretty gruesome subject matter that is tackled, but that's to be expected during a war.
So many emotions swirled through me as I read each account, hungry to find out each outcome, the suspense sheer perfection. Not everything is resolved within this novel, and I actually ended this book and instantly downloaded the next installment and continued my reading. Gotta love technology!!
One thing that really struck me in In the Shadow of Your Wings was the pride that several individuals had from killing so many people. Truly sickening yet sadly many have felt that way, which boggles my mind.
I lost so much sleep reading this novel, the writing absolutely incredible. I highlighted so many inspiring quotes that it's almost overwhelming to pick which one was my favorite. I was absorbed like no other and cannot wait to see the saga continue in In the Midst of the Flames.
*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of each book which I read through Kindle Unlimited for JustRead Tours. All views and opinions are completely honest, and my own.
The Northshire Heritage series is written by JP Robinson. It is a series of 3 books that have a Christian Historical Suspense Theme. I have not read anything previously by this author. The series will follow the Steele family during the Great War. The author did a wonderful job in creating characters and their back stories and introducing them. I felt like I knew all of them through out the series. I would recommend reading them in order, as I have been able to do so that you can get the full effect.
The first book, In the shadow of your wings was probably my favorite. I did a lot of studying on spies during my undergrad and graduate degrees, so I am always drawn toward books that focus on that. This book switches back and forth between Germany and Great Britain. The names and relation of the characters in the front of the book helped a lot. Leila, is a German spy. She falls for Malcom Steele, whose family is very important to Britain. This obviously spells disaster. She is told she has to get in good with the Steele family in order to extract information, and she is torn. She loves her home country, but she is also in love with Malcom.
The author has done a great job in research with this series. As a history major, I love seeing history come to life through characters. I was able to read through these quickly and easily. This was a great series and I am so thankful to be able to read it.

In The Shadow Of Your Wings by J.P. Robinson is a thrilling Christian historical suspense set during the early years of World War I. It is the first book in the Northshire Heritage series. The novel views the war from both the eyes of the Allies and the Germans. Both sides become cannon fodder. Both sides have families who love them. And both sides work on the premise kill or be killed. Not everyone who is fighting likes bloodshed. “The hated Hun. Hated by whom?... Not hated by God. Not hated by me.” God loves all His children. It grieves Him when they are in conflict. The reader witnesses the awful destruction caused by the zeppelin raids over the East End of London. In the light of this terrible tragedy and death toll, we have a choice as to how we respond. “She was forced to choose her response to this tragic loss.” Our losses will either sink us or propel us into action. Both sides have planted agents to report on, and also sabotage the war effort. It was a time of mistrust as many were suspected and investigated. A family feud splits lives apart. As one tries to heal the rifts, another feels unworthy. We witness the prodigal son theme as a father longs to make peace. Jesus sacrificed Himself for us all. A character feels unworthy but no one is ever too far from God. Jesus died for the sins of us all. “It’s never too late… Those nail-pierced hands are still reachin’ out for you.” God is light. His light shines even on the darkest night. “Despite the horror of that dark night, she saw a reflection of the goodness of God.” We need to move towards the light and cling on to God. There are some battle scenes that are horrific. The First World War was a slaughter house as many lives were lost on both sides. This is a cracking start to a new series. Book two here I come! I received a free copy from Just Read Tours. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

That being said: I was looking forward to reading this book because it sounded interesting enough, but I wasn’t sure if I would love it or if it would just be one of those “okay” reads.
This book follows the story of a big cast of characters and is told through multiple POV’s (point of views). The main idea is that a German Spy named Leila is sent to infiltrate and gain intelligence on an important British family and she faces a surprising discovery that causes her to question her loyalty. As she faces trials she feels her past catching up with her and she wonders if she can ever find forgiveness and freedom in this war-torn world.
Along with Leila, there’s Malcolm Steele the son of the head of the Bank of England. The nation sees Sir Thomas as a heroic soldier and trustworthy man, but Malcolm just sees a man that doesn’t understand him and has no respect for him. Malcolm faces his own trials as he struggles to find his sense of purpose in the world.
Eleanor and Will Thompson are a God-fearing couple that are separated when Will goes off to War and they struggle to trust in God’s plan for them.
There were a few characters’ POVs I didn’t find as interesting, but I will admit that their perspectives added to the story and helped to round things out. Also, I had to keep in mind that this was the first book in a series—so there’s plenty of time for character development (and I did see some).
The plot was very quickly paced—I can’t think of many places that the story line seemed to drag. The prologue and the first several chapters were very attention grabbing—wow! I was very quickly drawn into the world of the story. I had a hard time putting it down once I started it.
I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book set in this time frame before, but I really enjoyed the spy/WWI themes. The inside views you get on the war on both the British and German sides were exciting to read. With war comes a whirlwind of emotions—joy, fear, depression, anger—and I think the author did a great job showcasing these different angles as was appropriate for the story. There were many emotional scenes!
This is a Christian book, and that is apparent. It is very well written. I had originally gone back and forth about how I thought the author handled the Christian themes in this book. I like the overall idea of what the author was trying to do, but at times I felt like the story was just missing something. Often, I found myself feeling like the Christian themes were taking a backseat to the plot, but then other times there were some very moving and inspired scenes and dialogue that I really enjoyed! This book was focusing on themes of forgiveness, mercy, and love. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the author brings these out even more in the following books. I loved watching the climax build. The author left me wanting to know what happens next and as I finished this book I found myself wishing I had the sequel in my hands already!
Overall, this book was a good read. 4 stars. I had a few minor things I didn’t like but that’s mainly just my personal opinion I’m sure. (I would expound on those areas but #spoilers.) I don’t think I was ever bored reading this book. The characters are good and easy to identify with for the most part. I witnessed some character growth and development which was satisfying and I’m looking forward to watching these characters progress even more in the following books!
So, would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. If you are looking for a good, clean, historical fiction with Christian themes I would highly suggest this book. I don’t think it quite makes it onto my list of favorites, but I enjoyed it very much. I will probably end up purchasing a physical copy of it for myself at some point down the line!

If you were to pick up this book and not know what it was about in advance, your first thoughts would possibly be that it’s about the aftermath of the French Revolution. The prologue takes readers back to Paris in 1794, and an audacious plot involving the Dauphin, the heir to the French throne. There’s a conspiracy theory that the young prince was swapped with a local boy and thus survived, and Robinson plays on that in writing this scene. The reason for its place in the book is quickly explained in the first couple of chapters.
I had problems with this novel in terms of research and editing. The prologue involves the Marquis de Lafayette and Queen Marie Antoinette. But the queen was executed in 1793, and Lafayette was himself in prison until 1797. I didn’t immediately notice this error, and only realized it later when writing this review. My own background as someone raised in Britain, however, caused me to pause more than once during my reading. I can understand using “apartment” instead of “flat” when writing for an American audience. But Liverpool Street Station in London is written as “Liverpool Station,” which is somewhere else entirely. Then there was the German general having a British-made car. I couldn’t get my head around a German military officer being in a car made by the enemy. Surely there had to be a German carmaker in 1915? And then there was the real clunker. One of my pet peeves is using the word “of” instead of “have.” In this book, there’s a glaring use of “who’d of” instead of “who’d have.” How did that get through the editing process?
Okay, so those were my issues but they weren’t enough to stop me reading totally. There’s plenty to commend it. The middle section of the book focuses on the Second Battle of Ypres. It’s notable for the use of poison gas on the British and allied troops on the Western Front. I found the novelized development of the gas by scientist Fritz Haber, and the tempestuous relationship he had with his wife Clara, fascinating. As a side note, I had a great-grandfather who was a victim of German gassing, although I don’t recall in which battle that happened. There are multiple scenes that take place in the trenches and of the fighting, and it made me wonder what my ancestor had gone through.
The characters of In the Shadow of Your Wings certainly provoked different feelings in me. At first, Thomas came across as an unfeeling father but he grew on me. In contrast, I couldn’t stand Malcolm and my feelings about him definitely didn’t change. The novel also contains plenty of tension, which builds up over the course of the narrative. And then it ended on a cliffhanger! What? I invested in the storyline and the characters, and there’s no resolution? A little bit of digging and I discovered that the In the Midst of Flames is due out sometime in the fall of 2019. I’ll be looking for it.
Thank you to the author for my complimentary electronic copy of this book.

In The Shadow of Your Wings is an historical novel set in England, France, and Germany during WWI. An intense read with very realistic details of the ugly stuff of war — zeppelin attacks, trench warfare, and the effects of Germany’s poisonous gas weapons — this book also deals with the ugliness and beauty of the human soul. The contrast between the many characters, both historic figures and fictional, is stark. Spies determined to devastate their enemy’s defenses, scientists with personal glory as their goals, and those who depend only on self populate the pages of this book. But there are also those who rely on God, even in the most unimaginable circumstances. I’m not sure enjoyment would be a good word for my reading experience, but I will say the fight between good and evil as detailed in the book was intriguing and got me thinking. The complex structure of the book involves multiple story lines — the list of characters and their relationships at the beginning of the book is very helpful. It’s worth the time to review it. The ending of the book leaves a number of threads left dangling, so be prepared to plunge into book 2, In The Midst of Flames. All three titles in the series are available, so you may want to schedule a little binge-reading time.
Audience: adults.
(I purchased the ebook version from Amazon. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)
There were many aspects of this book I liked, including the vivid descriptions, although a few of the war scenes were quite graphic. The author is a gifted writer and the story was engaging, but I found the huge cast of point-of-view characters difficult to keep up with. I didn't really connect to the characters or relate to them in any way so I didn't really care about what happened to them as I should have. That could have been because there were so many characters, not enough time was spent on one or two main ones. I didn't realize the book was part one of a saga and expected satisfaction at the end and was disappointed when it left me hanging. Even with the issues I've mentioned, I still give this book a four-star rating. With the number of characters developed, the intricate storyline set in WWI Germany and Great Britain, and the deep spiritual themes presented, I believe the author's writing deserves it.
This is a book for readers who like stories told from multiple viewpoints. World War One is unfolding. We see it from many angles: Boardrooms and the trenches. Male and female. Priveledged and poor. German and British. Strong believers and those who turned away from God. I liked the fact that this book portrays the war from different worldviews, which of course means they see what's going on with vastly different attitudes. Together, these varied outlooks paint a fuller, more complex picture of the events. But ultimately, this book isn't about the war being fought in Europe. WWI is the backdrop for the battles being fought in the characters' hearts. Heartbreak, guilt, unforgiveness, misunderstanding, lies, betrayals. These are the battles the book is really about. And through the story we see how these characters grow--either toward truth and hope or bitterness and hate.
I guess an author shouldn't prefer one book above another—is there some rule about that somewhere?—but I have to confess, writing the Northshire Heritage series gave me sort of spiritual "jolt" that I really needed.
It connected with me in a deep, personal way as I began to explore the love of God as a Father. Being a father myself, I can empathize with Thomas's struggle as his son strays from a good path. How do you win your child back without making him/her feel like you're constantly being "judgmental"?
But In the Shadow of Your Wings is a thriller—a fast-moving web that I loved writing. I hope you'll enjoy reading this first part of an incredible series.
This is part one of a trilogy, not a standalone book. It grabbed my attention right away and never let go. The rich descriptions put me right in the middle of the action. It has a varied, believable cast of characters from all walks of life. We are really shown the war from all sides, British and German. There was also plenty of family drama as a young, spoiled heir to an earldom thinks he doesn’t have to follow anyone’s rules. He gets a rude awakening after enlisting. I had a hard time putting it down.
Fantastic WWi historical fiction book. Fast paced, you won't want to put this book down. Great story, characters and believable. Looking forward to reading more of the Northshire Heritage series wish they were available now. Also, more from this Author. Highly recommend. Won the e-kindle version of this book from Goodreads and Author J.P. Robinson, Thank you kindly!
Wow. This story had characters from every walk of life-in all aspects of that time period. So beautifully written on how their individual stories intertwine. This is a must read for historical fiction lovers.
The author does a perfect job at setting a clear stage for so many stories, characters and their hardships. Absolutely mind blowing how the plot unfolds. Amazing!
This book was a Goodreads win for me. Thank you, Goodreads. There's a ton of characters in this book. Too many for me to keep up with. A little disappointing. I think lots of people will enjoy this book, but for me it fell short.
This was a new author to me and I enjoyed the premise of the story and the main character was fabulous. I struggled to like the hero of the story at all, so I am hoping he is redeemed or killed off in upcoming books. This author did a great job of keeping my attention and me wanting more.
A page turner. I couldn't leave it alone. I got to the end and thought, "Now wait a minute! where's the rest of it? You can't leave me hanging like this!!" There's something in this book for everyone.
German spies in London, female volunteers for the Red Cross in France, the head of the Bank of England, heir to a large estate and fighting in the battle of Ypres in WW1 converge for an exciting trilogy. The story continues through books 2 & 3
