The Human Half

Rate this book
Threaded with echoes of familial trauma—a sister’s battle with cancer, a brother’s struggles with depression—the lyric poems in The Human Half reveal an open-hearted speaker who finds solace in the beauties of celestial navigation, the flowers along the railroad tracks, and the brushwork of Vermeer and Van Gogh. Filled with quirks of perception, Deborah Brown holds space for wonder amidst of life’s seasons of longing.

In a word, wow.

These are richly woven, complex stories, with characters who are at times raw and brittle, sometimes tender and earnest. Animals and birds, featured in and among stories about individuals who live and wrestle with their animal natures. It's an exquisite and compelling pairing.

(Note, the author is a friend of mine; but that just drew me to read the book, no bearing on how much I liked these stories.)

I love this book! A wonderful and weird collection of short stories - like a marriage of David Lynch and Alice Munro. I read it straight through without stopping. (For real!)

Perhaps a bad day for a first read? But I didn't get a lot from it. Loss, certainly, but themes seemed confused and although images were striking they didn't seem cohesive.
