William Edward Hartpole Lecky was an Irish historian and political theorist. Born at Newtown Park, near Dublin, he was the eldest son of John Hartpole Lecky, a landowner. He was educated at Kingstown, Armagh, at Cheltenham College, and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated BA in 1859 and MA in 1863, and where he studied divinity with a view to becoming a priest in the Protestant Church of Ireland.
In spite of the author's outdated opinions on topics relating to women he makes some very important points about the way people thought and how that changed from the end of the ancient to the beginning of the modern world. This is very interesting reading and helpful in forming understanding about social history and the creation of the modern world.
If you have stumbled here, you already know what this book is (a favorite of Winston Churchill). It's heavy, dry, academic prose, and not for the faint of heart, nor anyone who does not read Latin, French, and a little German. But if you want to swallow a dense dose of European History, this and Part 2 are the books for you.
