We met Van Stenson in the previous book in the series, Kick - you don't have to have read it as there is enough background, but why would you want to miss all the rucking goodness?
In the aftermath of events in Kick, Van is licking his wounds a little, and just not his usual self. He's a little despondent really.
Danny is his best friend, and the girl he never thought he wanted - but once that idea is in his head, she is all he can think about.
I loved how Danny didn't fall into his bed like all the other "sports whores" have done in the past. I loved how she made him fight for her attention.
The chemistry between Van and Danny was palpable - whether is was love or hate, it was there. You could feel the emotions roll off Van as he comes to realise his feelings for Danny. Not just his current feelings, but in hindsight how he has felt in the past too.
After Kick, I kind of felt that Van deserved to be the way he is in the beginning of Ruck, but as the story unfolded I kind of adored him more and more.
Ruck is a quick story about not seeing what is right in front of your eyes. But for a quick read, is packed a hell of a punch.

The Completion series can be read as standalones but Van Stelson first appeared in book 3, Kick so I was aware of this man-whore and his sexy reputation with the ladies. I was interested to see how his story would pan out and who would get to tame him. It was a surprise to finally find out here in this short sexy read.
Van and his brother, Joel had overcome a love triangle a year back when Joel became the owner of Cami’s heart. Van is now seeing that Cami was not for him and as his sister-in-law, he sees the relationship she has with his brother in happily married bliss. It is this that Van is jealous off. He now realises he needs to make a change in his life if he is to ever be lucky enough to find the one woman meant for him. Little did he realise how close to home she would be.
Danny is a tough cookie. She’s not a frills and sparkles girl, being a rugby player she is all about the game. She loves nothing more to catch up with her bestie, Van, after a hard game. But the teases and banter between them is hiding something Danny is keeping secret and Van didn’t realise he was missing.
I love a good friends to lovers storyline and this one certainly made the grade. I liked seeing the other side of Van and it was a revelation of how lost this sweet and romantic man was underneath in contrast to his outside reputation. Danny made him work for his dream once he realised she was it. There was no way he was treating her like his hook-ups. After seeing him time after time leaving her at the bar to take off with one of the flighty bar girls, she would not allow him to hurt her anymore. Once Van finds out what they have been hiding, he makes it his main game to win the love of his best friend.
A quick and engaging read of family friends and love that had me left with a touch of the warm and fuzzies at the end. Four stars.
Van doesn't know that what he has been looking for was in front of him all the time. Danny doesn't want to be another spot in his bed. She doesn't wan their friendship ruined. But when Van try for them to be something more, friendship might be sacrifice in order to keep her heart safe and sound.
Van's brother Joel fell in love with one of Van's one night stands. Now, Van is jealous. He wants what he brother has. Danny has been Van's BF and secretly in love with him (yes, of course, you have no idea where this is going, right?!). Van decides he is through with one night stands and wants a forever relationship. With Danny. I liked Danny, Van not as much. He frequently describes himself as a "man-whore." I just didn't buy their romance. The both of them liked to go out and he'd pick up the "flavor of the day" in front of her. This is Van's description of Danny: "beefy," "deeper voice," and "Her hands are not quite what I'd call sexy because they're too big for my taste." I also didn't like Van's opinion of a Prius (as someone who drives one because I care about the environment/fuel economy): "sissy-assed Prius." I didn't need to be reminded of Van's "man-whore" status either. "I've had more blow jobs than I can count on my fingers and toes." BUT, the one he got from Danny is "the hottest thing." Whatever dude. What saved this was Danny made him work for it.
It seemed like these two were always on the wrong wavelength! They were friends, then more, then less, then not friends, then more, then even more (finally!)
OH VAN VAN VAN VAN VAN! We met him in the early books and this series and I must say he was the biggest pompous jerk off ever so I knew that he would make for an interesting and kick butt story and I am so happy that Holly gave him his own story. There was so much depth and mystery behind Van Stelson and we got to explore his world and get to know him on such a deeper level. Pompous jerk he is NOT. Yes he has his issues that he needs to work on but what man doesn't? I loved how we got to see him transform from a playboy into someone who I could see settling down and having a family. He surprised me with how much he grew in this short novella that it made me not only fall in love with his bad boy ways but also his sweeter side. I was proud to see him finally open his eyes and see what and who he really needed in his life. I think Holly did a great job with taking a character that I am sure a lot of us wanted to hate and turning him into a character that we should all have fallen in love with. Danny is my hero. Not only is she a beautiful character she is strong and passionate and is 100% true to herself. She doesn't bend to Van's will and will forever and always remain Danny. She is who she is, take it or leave it. She is used to see the endless revolving door or women go in and out of Van's life and still she puts on this strong front that it doesn't tear her heart to shreds. I felt so much compassion for her during this read because I couldn't imagine being in love with someone and watching them for so long not really see you. The one thing that I was very happy about and made me chuckle was that she gave Van a taste of his own medicine and it was brilliant. Holly did a great job with showcasing a strong female lead that anyone would admire and cheer for. Van met his match with Danny and the push and pull, give and take was entertaining to read. Now as always in true Holly fashion the sex was OFF THE CHARTS HOT. Ruck just like the rest of The Completion Series does NOT lack in pantie melting scenes that have you squeezing your thighs just a bit tighter. The chemistry between Danny and Van we incredible addicting that I will say the ONLY thing I didn't like about this story was that it wasn't longer. I knew going into this one that it was a novella, which I love those, however this couple I could have read another 100 pages of and not gotten bored. Even though Ruck COULD be read as a stand alone I would suggest and encourage reading the ENTIRE COMPLETION SERIES because I LOVED EVERY SINGLE BOOK. You need to loath Van just a little before you fall in love with him. You should experience all the characters from beginning to end and have Holly consume your life from Play (Completion #1) to Strike (Completion #2), Kick (Completion #3), Slam (Completion #4) all the way to Ruck (Completion #5). All novels except Ruck which makes me a tiny bit sad are full length novels but will be devoured in record time I promise. Love Love Love this series and couldn't recommend any of them enough! So my rating is 4-4.5 stars ONLY because I wanted more more more!
I love rugby. I love romance. So, anytime I see the two together, I’ll snatch up that book. This one was a quick paced novella that was a lot of fun to read.
Van Stelson is a player, and in more ways than one. He’s a star player on Colt, Ohio’s professional rugby team, The Slam, and an incorrigible one-night-stand womanizer. Women only had a place in his life for one night only. Well, all women except his best mate, Danny, but she was just one of the guys to him.
Danny plays rugby for the local women’s team and is a tomboy through and through. She can take a hit on the field, drink hard at the pub, and even help Van pick out his conquest for the night. In her shapeless clothes and tough attitude, Van doesn’t even notice Danny as the beautiful woman she is.
After Van’s brother settles down and has a child, he realizes that he wants a family of his own. And he wants it with Danny. But, after seeing how he’s treated women through the years, Danny has no interest in being another notch on his bedpost. If Van wants Danny, he’s going to have to prove to her he wants more… Maybe even forever. And Danny has no plans to make it easy for him.
Told solely from Van's POV, it was amusing to see him struggle with how to win a Danny over. He’d never really had to try with women before. Dating was a foreign concept. His frustration with himself and the situation was both adorable and funny.
The friends to lovers theme of this was fun. Danny is tough, yet vulnerable, and I love how she made him prove himself and his intentions. She knew her worth and, even though it was tough for her, she wouldn’t give in to temptation.
Overall, this was a quick, fun read that, despite being part of a series, really works well as a stand-alone. I really like this series and, after reading Kick, I’m glad the author decided to give us Van’s story. If you love sports romance, then definitely pick this one up.
What a fun, quick read! I love friends to lovers stories, and I really loved how Danny turns the tables on Van when he realizes she’s the one he’s been looking for.
I loved both Van and Danny. It was easy to see they were perfect for one another…of course everyone but Van could see it! It was fun getting inside Van’s head as he starts to realize that his days of being the bad-boy man-whore are behind him and he’s ready for something real in his life. He’s the king of denial at first, but once he realizes that he’s looking for a future instead of a right-now he’s committed to making that happen. Danny was that great “one of the guys” character that underneath had a wonderful girly side that very rarely (if ever!) came out. The only thing I would have wished for Danny’s character was that she would have really given it to Van after he first tries to pursue her romantically – I would have loved to have seen/heard that – but knowing how insecure she is I can see why she reacted the way she did…and I love watching her make Van work hard for her!
This was a really great read that worked well as a novella. I didn’t feel the story was rushed. And even though their relationship moved quickly, they had a history so it didn’t seem like it moved to fast. Throw in some signature Holly S. Roberts dirty talk and sexy times, plus some secondary characters and story lines that added some additional depth, and you have a one fun story with emotion, heat and two characters who deserve their happy ever after.
This is the perfect read when you want to watch the hero have to really work for his happy ever after – in other words, a must read for everyone!
I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review.
This is my first book by Holly S. Roberts, and I really enjoyed it. Van Stelson is the bad boy of rugby. He goes through women like kids go through socks. However, he's jealous of his brother's happiness, and starts to really take a look at his life. He's never looked at his best friend Danny as a woman, rather as his drinking buddy. Now he's starting to really look at her, and finds that he wants more than just a friend. Danny is athletic and independent, and has no desire to sleep with the town man whore. Can Van show Danny that he's serious about her, or will he drive her away?
I haven't read the other stuff that Van's in, so the character development is great, and easy to see him evolve. A quick, and well written story line flows well. The author did a great job forcing several emotions to the surface, as I found myself really irritated with some of Danny's actions on top of feeling her and Van's pain. I was hooked from the beginning, and didn't stop reading until the end. I just wish that the ending didn't feel so rushed, as I could have kept reading about Van and Danny all day. Overall, Ruck is a quick and easy read that I happily recommend.
Didnt like it. The beginning was too awful for me to buy in. Van describes Danny as "meaty" - that will never, never be a good word to use to describe a woman you're going to then fall for. No. Then a bit later he says some people might say she's "gangly." So at this point I picture a meaty orangutan. Great. Anyway I just didnt like this at all. So I barely skimmed it. I dont know why both the rugby related books have been so mediocre or bad, but they are, sadly.
When you cross the best friend lines anything is up for grabs. Holly Roberts knows how to paint the perfect picture with words. NOTHING and EVERYTHING is left to your imagination. Get ready for the game of a lifetime, this is not a book you will put down!
Van Stelson definitely lives up to that slogan with his womanizing ways, but at the beginning of Ruck, Van’s in a bit of a funk and hasn’t been his manwhore self because he’s realized that he wants more from a woman than just a bedmate; he wants what his brother has with a girl that he could have had if he didn’t mess it up. But even if Van wants to change his ways, getting people to buy into it…to believe that he wants the “real thing” as opposed to keeping his player behavior is the biggest challenge he has to face, especially from the woman who has always been next him as his friend and nothing more and who he now sees more clearly as a beautiful and amazing woman and wants to make her his even though she’s not “his type.”
I love how Holly S. Roberts portrays Danny Brighton, the heroine; she’s the kind of girl I love to read about because she’s 100 % real and doesn’t allow anyone’s expectations to rule how she acts. I understand her hesitancy when it comes to Van’s declarations; I wouldn’t know how to take his abrupt change of heart and the fact that he never saw me as anything more than a buddy, especially if I actually had feelings for him. Because I loved Danny so much, I would have liked to have heard her perspective a bit to get the whole picture…to understand her views and actions, but I do understand why it was told through the hero's eyes because he's the one who needed to grow and change to get what he truly wanted in life.
I love friends to lovers story lines, and while I did like Ruck, I felt like everything moved a bit too quickly, and the relationship that resulted didn't feel completely genuine because of it. I guess I needed more…more building of the relationship…more explanations as to why Van’s feelings changed and it became all about Van proving to Danny that he can be the man she needs. I know that people change all the time; they grow and have revelations about how they want to lead their lives, but that growth is gradual, for the most part, and I wanted to see Van and Danny’s story play out a bit slower, so I didn’t doubt Van’s change of heart at all.

3.5 Poison Apples (The Fairest of All Book Reviews)
So where do I want to begin???? Should I start off with the review, or should I start off with a few of the quotes that made this book so enjoyable. Decisions, decisions.
Okay, quote it is... now to choose one of the many that I loved. "Hell froze over." "Earth as we know it, will never be the same. I looked forward to being warm in hell, not cold, so I guess I need to straighten myself out and look upward." ~ Danny~
This book is not only about the love of a game shared between both of the characters Van and Danny, but that of unknown feelings. Sometimes we as people fail to see what is sitting right in front of us, and this story shows us that very thing. Holly S. Roberts manages to give us yet another fantastic story that will not only have us drooling over the star player, but will allow us to get that warm and fuzzy feeling for the romance involved.
Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. I actually managed to read it with in the time frame of a few hours. It is just that good. You find yourself at the end of the story before you even realize it. I love the way that Van decided and figured out what he wanted and continued to chase after it, even when it seemed that he would never achieve his very mission. Not only did he stick with his game, but he didn't allow anyone to knock him out of actually scoring his goal.
Again there are so many highlights and points to this book that I could just go on and on. But, what fun would that be, because then I wouldn't leave you the reader anything left unknown. So with that being said, I will leave you with one more of my favorite quotes.
"What the hell's gotten into Van? Are you terminally ill, picked up an STD and the penicillin hasn't kicked in yet, or maybe you hit your head?" ~Danny~ " Not terminal illness, I didn't hit my head, and I promise, Danny girl, I'm clean due to finishing my last round of antibiotics weeks ago." ~Van~
This was a super cute book. This is a branch spanking new author for me and one I definitely will be looking up in the near future. Once I read this series, I learned that it is a book within a series but can be read as a standalone with no issues. Nonetheless, I get the feeling their are some other good back stories just from the glimpses we got. But back to this super adorable book.... Ruck.
This book was fun. It was sexy, sweet, cute, steamy, and has one naughty rugby player who is going to make you swoon and smile. This story is a best friends to lovers story with one reformed manwhore and one kick ass chick who can hold her own with the ladies and gents. This book is a great addition to the sports romance genre and definitely will be a hit among those readers.
This is Van and Danny's story. Van and Danny are best friends... hang partners... drinking buddies. But one day everything changes for Van. He starts to see Danny may be more than just one of the guys. She may just be someone that is worth changing his ways for. But Danny isn't going down without putting Van to the ultimate test. There will be push and pull. There will be angst.
These two will put your emotions through the ringer but I have to say that I was fist pumping at our sweet Danny. She really gave Van a run for his money. And while this book is told in solely Van's point of view, the epilogue does have a journal page from Danny that was really enlightening and totally made me smile. I am curious to see if this series continues and who we will meet.
This is the first time I read anytime by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed this story. You don't have to read the whole series to to be able to read this stand alone book ,but I recommend to read them all it's a great story. This story is about Van Stelson who just happens to be the bad boy of rugby, he likes woman a lot and he goes through them like a baby does diapers. But he has always be jealous of his brother's happiness, and then he starts to think about his own life and what he's missing. And then there's Danny his best friend and drinking buddy, he doesn't even think of her as a woman. But then he starts to see her more then just a friend , he seems to want more from her. Danny has always be athletic and very independent, and doesn't want to sleep with the hot and sexy rugby whore. But well he be able to make her realize , he's very serious about her. Or will she runaway from him? As I'm reading this series by Holly S. Roberts I came to realize that the writing was so well written. and just draws you into the story as your reading from the start to the very ending. And the characters were developed so well and played off each other great. The emotions that this author can bring out in us as the readers is great, I sometimes got irritated with Danny's actions , specially when it came to both of their pain. This series will have you wanting more. I could go on and tell you more about this story , but that would spoil this amazing story for you. I highly recommend you read this great series ,you won't be disappointed.
Ruck is a short and sweet 4 star read. I love a good story of friends becoming lovers and Holly S. Roberts did a great job of setting up the perfect friends to lovers couple. I did feel that this moved a little too quickly, and I really would have liked more build up from Van seeing Danny as a friend to him seeing her as a potential love interest. Overall, this is still a good read.
Van has lived the love ‘em and leave ‘em lifestyle for years and has had no interest in anything more. That is until his brother marries one of his past conquests, and he suddenly finds himself less interested in the casual affairs that have always made him happy in the past. When he finally accepts that he might want more, the woman he wants, his best friend Danny, is not about to make it too easy for him. Van is kind of a macho jerk, and that fact is even made fun of in the book. His attempts to win Danny over definitely left something to be desired at times, but he had a big heart and did a lot of growing up in this short book.
Danny is somewhat of a tomboy and nothing like the women Van normally sleeps with. She’s also got no intention of becoming another notch on his bedpost. I liked Danny. She was written as tough, funny, and smart. I did have some moments near the end where I felt her actions didn’t really match up with her personality, but I don’t want to go into details and give away too much of the story.
This book was given to me in exchange for an honest review.
Van Stelson is the playboy of rugby. He doesn't discriminate when it comes to the women he beds. But this bad boy has a reputation of the women he likes to have in his bed, and his best friend Danny doesn't meet the requirements or so he thinks.
Feeling lost and a little jealous of his brother's happiness, Van finally opens his eyes to the life he is leading. Now he is looking at best friend Danny as more than a friend who can out drink him but as a desirable woman.
Danny has always had feelings for Van, but knew to preserve their friendship she had to bury those feelings. She is nothing like the women that Van beds. She is independent, out spoken and athletic.
I love stroylines that show a couple as friends that evolve into more. Danny doesn't just fall in Van's bed and makes him work for her time and attention. But once Van realized Danny was the perfect woman for him, he was all in. There was no second guessing regarding what he wants and feels for her. Danny on the other hand had me frustrated at times. I know it was hard trusting Van with his man whore history but come on give the man a chance!
It was an okay short read. I think it should have been longer to give Van the redemption he needed for this series. He transformation of a one woman man was pretty fast.
3.5 Stars This book was good but a little frustrating too. A friends to lovers romance between an oblivious manwhore and his rugby friend, this story was a little bit sweet, a little bit heat and a little bit short.
I did find myself annoyed that so much blame was put on Van and that he was constantly made out to be the bad guy; Meanwhile Danny was running away from his sudden interest without giving him a chance. Then I realized that, duh, he was the bad guy for so long that it was time for him to get his just dues. It was necessary for him to fight for Danny after not noticing her for so long. It wouldn't have been right for him to get his HEA so easily.
This wasn't my favorite story of this series but I think that it had more to do with the length of the story than anything else. I think that if I had more time with Danny and Van they could've been my favorite. If you are looking for a quick, easy read and you like a good friends to lovers romance, this book is for you.
*I received an ARC from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review
I have absolutely LOVED The Completion Series. Every book can be read as a standalone. Ruck can as well however I think to enjoy it to it’s fullest you need to read Kick which is where we were introduced to Van and Danny. Ruck is a friends to lover’s story. Both Van and Danny are both Rugby stars. it’s their life. Van is a classic man whore and did anything in a skirt. Danny sat back and watched him take home all these awful women over the years secretly wanting it to be her. The banter and take no prisoners friendship these had was enjoyable to read. However, the story was not as great as some of the others in the series. This one unfortunately fell flat for me. I was so looking forward to Van’s book and I was left a bit disappointed. It was however nice to see Van’s more gentler side and watch him fall in love. It was awesome to see Cami and Joel, Van’s brother from Kicked and how their relationship progressed. I will continue reading this series and other books published by Holly Roberts. I do love her storytelling.
"Ruck" is the first of a few things for me: my first Rugby romance and my first Holly S. Roberts book. I have to say I was completely impressed by the book and story line and recommend giving it a read!
Van is womanizing Rugby player who figures out after a one night stand with his brothers now wife, that maybe he wants something more with someone now. He looks to his best friend, Danny, and starts to think maybe he's been missing out on something. Danny is not having any of his BS and quickly puts him in his place. She's not buying into his sweet charms, but the thing is he's serious about it. Can he prove to her that they're worth fighting for or will he miss his chance? I read this as part of the "Mischief Under the Mistletoe " box set.
Great new book in the Completion series. Van is a rugby player and Danny is the woman that has loved him forever. van has been king of the one night stands and Danny has stood quietly on the sidelines loving him. He has only seen her as a friend until he saw how happy his brother was ow that he was married and a father, now Van wants that for himself and begins to see Danny in a new light. This is a romantic, sexy love story that makes you care about the people you are reading about. I really enjoyed this book and read it cover to cover once I started reading it. I chuckled, laughed out loud at times and worried about Danny and Van finding happiness. I was given this arc book for an honest review.
I was a little disappointed in this book. It moved fast and I could have handled that but I felt like Van kept a lot of information to himself. For example, some paragraphs ended with sentences like:" Van just had to wait to make his move." But I don't know what his move was. Roberts lets us readers knows he's plotting to woo her and then doesn't tell us his plans, so we see his plans fail and it was just anticlimactic. It felt like I was entering at the middle of the book. I see Van decide, I see Van fail, I see their happily ever after. I felt like I wasn't privy to Van's emotions and thought process, just his actions. I did like it, the end was quite nice and made up for it, but I am still a little disappointed in how Van was presented.
I'm not a rugby person, but I loved this story. It was on the short side so a little rushed, but the characters are well developed. I also wish we could have had more POV from the heroine. The author did such a great job with Van's POV you just want more. Nice little friends to more romance. Fantastic ending. Little heavy on the cursing throughout the story.
The Completion Series (or as I fondly think of it as the Balls Books)
Thank you for the Christmas miracle, Van is finally settled and happy. Even though you are starting a new series, please don't forgot about those of us who are still hooked on this one. More sexy athletes please! Merry Christmas, Hope
At first, I did NOT like Van Stelson and his ways but after reading Kick and now, Ruck ..... He has Menes his ways ... And my heart! His and Dnny's story is sad but sweet! Thanks for keeping it real!! (P.S. I love all 5 books in this series!)
