One night, Elmer hears the sound of crying. It is Baby Elephant, who can’t sleep because he has lost his teddy. Elmer offers to lend Baby Elephant his teddy for the night and to search for the lost teddy the next day. But Baby Elephant’s stays missing until Elmer’s cousin, Wilbur, gets involved in the search.
Wilbur plays a joke on Elmer as usual, but one that helps Elmer find Baby Elephant’s teddy bear. And just in time for bed!
David McKee was a British writer and illustrator, chiefly of children's books and animations. He also used the pseudonym Violet Easton. He is frequently referenced as David (John) McKee. He has been commended for his gentle, playful but insightful stories.
For his contribution as a children's illustrator he was UK nominee for the biennial, international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2006.
This story features the popular character Elmer who helps his friend find his lost teddy. When baby elephant loses his teddy Elmer lends him his own multi coloured teddy. This book shows the importance of a special toy to a child.
This review and ratings are pointed towards the website I viewed Elmer and the lost teddy on rather than the book itself. One more story is a great recourse for children of all ages to access free read aloud storybooks for kiddos. http://www.onemorestory.com/Library/l... There is no question as to how to navigate through this website. From the sleek and uncluttered home page it is clear, even for a beginner reader, that you are supposed to click on the green arrow to access the stories. We are introduced to Bendy the bookworm and he gives easy to follow step-by-step instructions on how to maneuver throughout the reading material. An abundant array of popular titles are available at no charge to the reader and I particularly like that there is a word list for those words that may be unfamiliar. One can either read the story themselves, or click on Bendy and the story will be narrated aloud. If I had to say something that could be improved upon with the digital storyteller, it would have to be that I believe it would reinforce reading comprehension if the words were highlighted as they are being read out loud. Other than that, I believe that the One More Story website is a fun and engaging resource that many children would look forward to using.
This book is from the Elmer range and Elmer the elephant is helping baby elephant look for his teddy. He offers the baby his own teddy whislt he looks for his. It has a very fasinating trail story, leading the reader towards different animals who Elmer thinks may have seen Baby Elephant's teddy. Each animal already have their own teddies.
Eventuall the lost teddy is found by another patchwork elephant, who asks the obvious question of Elmer giving his own patchwork teddy to Baby elephant and that wasnt Elmer worried that he might not get his teddy back. To which Elmer, beautifully sums up "you dont have to be different to be special, all teddies are special"
For me this was a meanigful ending, getting the young reader thinking about different children/people being special in their own way.
The illustration was colourful, showing different patchwork animals.
Elmer and the lost teddy is about 'baby elephant' losing his favourite teddy while on a picnic with his family. 'Baby elephant' is very upset and cannot sleep without his teddy so Elmer is kind enough to lend 'baby elephant' his patchwork teddy for the night while Elmer goes on the hunt for the lost bear. Elmer searches all over the jungle for the teddy, he asks, lion, tiger and crocodile if they have seen the lost bear, finally he finds the teddy with Wilbur. 'Baby elephant' is so happy to have his favourite teddy back. This book is good to read with the children if we are going to do a teddy bears picnic with the class. All the children can bring in their own special teddies and talk to the class about how special they are to them.
I got this book for kiddo on whim and it turned out to be too good. This is our first (but definitely not the last) Elmer book.
Elmer is a special elephant who is different from other elephants. In this story, he helps a baby elephant to find its lost teddy as it cannot sleep without it.
Along the way the book also gives a beautiful message that “you don’t need to be different to be special. All things are special, especially your own”. Off course my 4 year old is still a bit young to understand this but with kids you never know 🙃
Overall a very good read. Approved by my kiddo. Since I gave him this book, he is reading it at least 5 times a day including night time reading.
Must read for kids who are into short picture story books
This book was mainly about helping each other and being kind. Elmer’s community all volunteered to help him find the teddy, which shows the power of community spirit often displayed in schools. This book is a good example to inform a kind and helpful classroom ethos in a relatable context. It can be applied to when children lose things such as toys or pens or a personal item and need help to find it, which is a very common occurrence in primary schools. There’s a lovely message at the end of the book that says “you don’t have to be different to be special”, which gives a lovely message of inclusivity and respect for all regardless of race, ethnicity, background etc.
Hi everyone! I'm working for a Russian website Papmambook.ru dedicated to children's books and children's reading. We've been building the English version of the website and recently published an article on Elmer and the Lost Teddy. The author talks about how the book helped her daughter, who was born without several finger phalanges, get off to a got start in school.
Absolutely loved reading *Elmer and the Lost Teddy* by David McKee! It’s such a charming story that captures the warmth and loyalty of our beloved teddy bears. Just like pets, teddies really are part of the family — they’re there through thick and thin, offering comfort and companionship. McKee’s colourful illustrations and gentle storytelling make it perfect for little ones, and I think anyone who’s ever had a treasured teddy will find it utterly heartwarming. A five-star read that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face!
Baby Elephant has lost his teddy bear. Elmer lets him sleep with his patchwork one, then goes to find the lost one the next day. He visits lots of other animals, whose children all have identically-illustrated teddy bears, before finding the missing one. Wilbur asks Elmer if he was worried Baby Elephant would want to keep his, since Elmer's is different and so might be considered better, but Elmer says you don't have to be different to be special. Now there's an important moral.
The adventures of Elmer the patchwork elephant are filled with love, kindness, acceptance, and friendship. A great baby gift for my son, Elmer, to give to a friend. We've been reading this series since my kids were little. Now we get to give them to their kids and their friend's kids. The last time my son gifted to a friend, her response was..."I'll think of you every time we read this."
Our daughter is obsessed with teddies so she loves this book and gasps when the Teddy is found and is "talking". When she sees all the animals with their night time teddies she hugs her favourite tightly. I would recommend this book.
KS1 - Liked this. Bit quirkly. Plenty can be read into it. Nice arch of a story. -Friendship, connection, community, help, care, empathy. I really liked the illustrations
Most parents know what it's like when the night-night toy has been lost. This sweet picture book shows Elmer going and looking for a lost teddy, and will be relatable for almost any family.
