Adrienne Morales is a hunted woman. Stalked by Voids—people immune to magic—and pursued by a deadly past, Adrienne wants nothing more than to avoid spells and sorcery. Her powers as an enchantress make that impossible. Every few days she must release the magic gathering around her, or it’ll steal her sanity. The only way to stay alive is to practice her magic in secret, hiding enchantments in works of art she sells in her craft store.
When a firebreathing psychopath controlled by enchantment tries to burn down her store, Adrienne unleashes her powers to stop him. Unfortunately her battle has a witness—Adrienne’s business partner. Turns out he’s a Void, and sworn to a Union that executes rogue magic users. Worse, the firebreather isn’t the only victim to pop up around San Francisco. Someone is using magic to create monsters and destroy minds, and the Void Union wants them dead.
Now Adrienne must capture the rogue enchanter before they ruin more innocent lives—and before the Voids punish her for the rogue’s crimes. But Voids aren’t the worst thing chasing her. Every enchantment she crafts makes it more likely her past will track her down. And if it does, madness will be the kindest fate awaiting her.

What a fun start to a fantastic new series! This novel reads fast, in part because the pacing is fantastic, with new twists around every corner and some hilarious banter in between, and in part because the world building just draws you in. Set in San Francisco, this urban fantasy introduces an alternate America, where the paranormal community bubbles just beneath the surface of the "real" world, held in check by Voids--those who can't be affected by magic. The magic system is fully developed, complete with awesome power and serious limitations, and the characters are well-rounded. Even those characters that at first appear like stock characteristics quickly show their true depth. And, frankly, while Adrienne was awesome, and Desmond kind of adorable, the squirrel shifter stole the show for me. I loved the friendship between these three, and am looking forward to the rest of this series!
*I received an ARC of this book. This review reflects my honest opinion.
Thank you NetGalley and Sealook Press for this arc.
Another young witch / enchantress living in "hiding" with a Messiah complex and her hunky boyfriend "save the world" story. Yawn.
The author is very knowledgeable of the San Francisco area. The pacing is fast and fairly consistent throughout. But the story has been done to death with much better characters.
I’m a fan of urban fantasy so I was very excited for this book. Focusing on alternate historical America wherein people with paranormal powers live among the normal folks trying to frantically avoid the presence of the “Voids”. The main narrator Adrienne Morales is of Columbian origin and is running away from some horrific things in her past. Adrienne is an enchantress who channels magic through her artwork and also can pass of charms through her pieces. Things however catch up with her as the Voids are alerted to her presence.
The best thing about this book is magic system which is thoroughly explained and is grounded. The humour is also a strong point and I’ve to mention Kendall the squirrel shifter who gets most of the punch lines. I would have really enjoyed reading this book ten years ago when I was new to the UF genre. However now it just is a mish-mash of the same tropes that are highly visible in the UF genre. Not to say that’s a bad thing but this book just didn't offer anything new for me and that reduced my enjoyment. Those readers wanting to have a quick, fun read in the UF subgenre, then Enchantress Undercover is certainly the book for you. For those who seek a little extra in your urban fantasy reads might want to skip this one.

2,5 stars for me. A fast paced urban fantasy/mystery featuring an original magical system.
THE KUDOS: - A very original and captivating magical system. - Easy to read. - Fast paced narration. - Lots of banters and humor. - A likable pair of main characters. - The identity of the “baddie” was a nice surprise.
THE THUMBS DOWN: - The romance felt very juvenile and tepid. - The MC’s constant mood swings between “this is not the time to think about how hot he is” to “check that piece of hunk tho!” were a little annoying. - The protagonist is affected by the dreaded snowflake syndrome. - The plot didn’t grab me at all. - The writing was almost too simple and didn’t add much gravitas to the story. - The mental age of the characters was rather alienating: having three people, who are supposed to be in their early twenties and are “adults”, talk like they’re 15 it’s annoying
I think this series has some potential, it only needs a bit more working...
I received this book from Sealook Press, Xpresso Book Tours, NetGalley for an unbiased review.
I loved this book!
What a lot of fun! Magic was used in a different and relatively unusual manner, characters were young, but fun, and the storyline moved along nicely. I had a lot of fun reading it, even though it was definitely YA. I've never minded YA books, and books like this are why.
The banter among the characters was entertaining, the storyline engaging and all in all a quick enjoyable read. The who-done-it in the storyline wasn't as tricky as it could have been. I knew who it was pretty quickly, but getting to where we're shown who it is was worth the trip. I liked all the characters, but I think maybe I like Kendall best. She's a firecracker, which is just my kind of teen/young adult. I was unable to determine the ages of everyone (they seemed younger than their years), but since this was more a fun tale than a tragedy or sex story, the ages didn't really seem to matter much. Having had kids of my own, I know that from about 16 to about 25 they are still working on maturing so age becomes immaterial. Watching Adrienne and Desmond develop a relationship slowly and carefully which was a nice change of pace.
I'm dying to know what happens next and hate that I'll have to wait for quite awhile since this book hasn't gone live yet, but wait I will anxiously! I like your work, AC Spahn, very much. Keep it up!

Actual Rating: 1.5 stars
I had low expectations for this book, but apparently I should have had lower. I requested this book on a whim, hoping it was be a cheesy but fun fantasy romance, and that was not what I got at all. This novel is extremely lackluster, which is why I was grateful it was short. Every aspect, from the characters, to the awkward teen-like romance, to the goals and motivations, felt generic and cardboard-like, or simply not developed at all.
Honestly, I’m not sure I could properly describe Enchantress Undercover, one because after finishing the book, I promptly forgot most of the book, and two, because I never really understood the logic behind Adrienne’s goals and motivations. None of her reasoning really made sense and everything she did just made what started out as a small concern, more and more of a problem for herself. Literally, no one suspected her of breaking the law until she started purposely involving herself and investigating the unknown enchanter.
Additionally, Adrienne’s narration was just…too much. Every chapter, if not more frequently, I was rolling my eyes and saying “No, really? Thanks, Captain Obvious.” I also found it irritating how in attempt to avoid exposition, the characters awkwardly forced out background info through dialogue. It made every detail that could have added character depth, come off as superficial and trivial.
And the romance. This was what I had placed all my hope on, and I was completely let down on it. I totally thought I was picking up a NA fantasy romance…but the romance was basically nonexistent? There was romantic tension, sure, but nothing came of it other than nerdy, awkward, high school crush-like interactions. Which is totally fine in some cases, but not when a book needed the romance to hold it up.
I will say that I did found the setting and the magic in this novel relatively intriguing, but again, the execution of the story was just so dull and shallow, that the worldbuilding couldn’t make up for it. I’m not sure I could think of any type of reader to recommend this to, and there is no circumstance in which I could picture myself continuing on with the series.

*voluntarily and honestly reviewed the ARC I received from NetGalley*
I enjoyed myself. It was direct and a nice combination of simple writing and complex story-telling that allowed the characters to add on all the complicated things on their own, making the reading experience fun and easy. Think of the feeling of pulling on fuzzy socks.
Adrienne was straight-laced, someone with a mysterious past that you knew about but didn't really KNOW, so the reveals here and there were fun. The (somewhat) murder mysteries and illegal use of magic was a great way to basically introduce someone to this secret world hiding in plain sight. A lot of the book was quick and didn't linger on any one thing. While I do wish it'd gone on a little longer and a little deeper, I appreciate what it did for the pacing so that nothing slowed down. It was pretty basic: sane character, good guy / hot guy, comedic relief, danger and fantastical moments. I'm not too bothered that these people didn't jump out at me like the true individuals I'm sure they are because I understand that whenever things begin, a lot of artists often start out their characters with a pretty set frame before allowing them to grow into their own.
Overall, it's a good way to introduce people to this series. Loved the writing, the pacing and flow, the people (man I hate the Void Union boss so much) and I'm excited to check out the second installment.
My first thought when I finished this book was one of exasperation. Why exasperation? Two reasons: I now have ANOTHER author I need to read, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. I really was impressed by this book for many reasons which included great writing, wonderful characters, and a totally engrossing plot. I adored Adrienne, Desmond, and above all Kendall (a squirrel shifter) who completely made the book. I even liked Axel at the end. I also liked the unique universe the other has created. I can’t wait to read the next one, and if you like urban fantasy, you really need to read this one. I do highly recommend this book and was provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
Spahn brings some unique ideas in the paranormal world. Had to look up Arcane to see what it meant. It means Secret and of course Artisans are those that make Art by Hand. Adrienne is an Enchantress full of power who uses it to create beautiful art that is sometime given a hidden charm. The problem is she is on the Run from her past and now since her discovery she is being stalked by the Voids. Read this series and get in from the beginning. "A copy of this book was provided by Sealook Press via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion." DON"T MISS THE CUTE SQUIRREL!
Enchantress Undercover had some amazing world building with an emphasis on the creation of the supernaturals which I definitely liked. The pace was well maintained and the action sequences were strong and well thought out. Urban fantasy is my go to genre and this had plenty to classify as urban fantasy. And here comes the but...But, I did not connect or become in invested with any of the characters. I found a few interesting but without any investment, I just liked it.

This was a great start to a series! The mystery unfolded pretty organically and the setup for the overarching villain in future books was done well. I liked the magic system and the structure of this world of magic users/creatures/enforcers. I felt like the identity of the enchantress and the explanation to the authorities of what happened at the end was a little rushed, but the end fight scene was very satisfying.
Maturity rating: maybe a couple mentions of drug/alcohol use; occasional swearing; violence wasn't overly gory; intimacy level was pretty tame. I'd recommend to young adults, especially since the characters seem to be in their twenties.
This book is definitely the most unique world I've encountered in quite some time. I read a lot of paranormal romance and this was so refreshing and interesting that I absolutely could not put it down. As the start of a series, I'm 100% committed and cannot wait until the next book!
Adrienne is an enchantress - someone who constantly attracts and channels magic. Sounds cool, but she must always be alert to the amount of magic she accumulates, because too much is dangerous. She had a pretty traumatic childhood, and that has led her to avoid sharing all of herself with others. Things are relatively "normal" for her, working in her craft space with her BFF and her possible love interest/landlord. One fateful day, however, thing get all turned upside-down. Now there's Voids, people who police her kind (and are immune to magic), after her, assuming that she is the nasty enchantress using magic for evil deeds.
Lucky for Adrienne, she has somehow surrounded herself with the best allies a girl could want. The mystery and action is filled with wonderful magics and interesting spells. I don't think I can stress how interesting and unique the magic in the book was. Channeling magic in this world is so intricate, it's like a work of art. Adrienne ends up figuring out how to survive this madness with her mind intact, but she's forced to make some tough decisions. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this series to see what other surprises this world holds.
A fast-paced and gripping book that I just couldn't put down. I loved the characters in particular Kendall, the squirrel-shifter who's character I found to be hilarious. I also was fascinated by the way the magical world blended with the ordinary. The way magic worked in this book was different to any other I'd read which made this book particularly riveting.

Adrienne Morales is an artist. She creates bespoke pieces of artwork for a number of clients and rents a space in Desmond Desoto's shop Craft Haven. She is also an Enchantress. She can channel the magic of the Earth into any enchantment she wishes, and can put that enchantment into her craft pieces, any object that is compatible, or even people. That last one she refuses to do. She's spent the last 7 years hiding from a cult that she escaped who were fleshwriters. Enchanters that willingly placed enchantments on people, whether those people were willing or not. She's been minding her own business and quite enjoys the little life she has created for herself. Between bickering with her best friend Kendall, and daydreaming about what her and Desmond's relationship COULD be. That all is thrown for a loop when an obviously enchanted and insane man barrels into the store breathing fire. A rogue enchantress is on the loose and is doing terrible, terrible things to unsuspecting people. The Void Union, the conglomerate in charge of overseeing the paranormal population around the world, are on the scene, and that's not exactly what Adrienne was hoping for. She's flown under the radar but now they know about her, and one specific Void Hunter has Adrienne pinned for the rogue enchantress. Now she must come out of hiding, face up to some truths, hope her cult doesn't find her, keep the Void Union off her back, and stop a rogue enchantress from causing more harm. Nothing big.
I was pleasantly surprised at how fast paced this novel was. It didn't seem like there was a LOT happening, don't get me wrong, there's stuff going on, but I was so shocked when I happened to see that I was already over half way through this book without realising it. It's such an easy story to fall into and it's a definite page turner for me.
I found the concept of Enchantresses brilliant. Essentially, any paranormal creature that currently exists can be traced back the Enchantress who created the enchantment to MAKE them that way. What an absolutely BRILLIANT concept. I've never come across it before and I absolutely LOVE it. I also loved that there are extremist groups in this. Adrienne's cult is definitely one of them. And something about the term fleshwriter just makes me giddy. Not in a weird way, in a "what an awesome term for someone who does something SO terrible" way. It's just a good term.
I found Adrienne's character to be incredibly likeable, relatable and real. She was easy to connect to and was just a down to earth character for someone constantly in a battle with magic wanting to be channelled. There was no false bravado, just someone trying to do what they think is right to fix something that is wrong. And even though she came from a rough childhood, it didn't turn her into a whiney, poor me, why me whingy McWhingepants, which I've come across sometimes in books, and it just grates on me. Spahn wrote Adrienne's character wonderfully and I thoroughly enjoyed her. I loved Kendall and Desmond's personalities as well, Kendall is the smartarse best friend who is always up to no good and Desmond is the love interest who hides how he really feels behind a smirk and bickering comments.
The story itself was well thought out. As said above, it was fast paced which for a story like this is fantastic. It really gave you the feeling of 'time is running out' and that is just amazing. I did not work out who the rogue enchantress was, I had a couple of possibilities but was pleasantly surprised when the big reveal happened. One Adrienne had worked it out, it clicked for me as well, which as you all know, I LOVE it when that happens. It sucks when you work it out before they do. The story tends to drag if it ends up that way.
The world building was done exceptionally well and there was no info dumping in sight. You were able to take in the make up and rules of the world without being completely bamboozaled with how it all works. I also love the underlying story that will obviously end up playing a big part through this series. The story of Adrienne's past and the cult she's been running from for the last 7 years. It's going to be an amazing showdown I reckon, and I cannot WAIT to read about it.
Adrienne works as an artist, creating objects by hand, but sometimes with a little magic mixed in. She works at a craft store and rents her space from the owner, Desmond, who makes furniture pieces. Another person who works as an assistant in the shop is Kendall, who also has her secrets. They all live in a part of the country where The Void Union are in charge and any sort of magical user should be registered, as well as any Voids – those who cannot be affected by magic.
Adi has the biggest secret, as she has escaped from a cult her family joined when she was a child and where others used her as a conduit for powerful magic, no matter how it affected her. She is still being hunted by her family and cult members and so has never registered her ability as an Enchantress, something that would normally get her killed or imprisoned, as most of her kind are extremely dangerous.
She has to release the magic that builds up within her from objects or even just magic from her surroundings, and thus must do some spells to transfer the magic out before it drives her mad. They are those who welcome the magic and are called Seekers. They seek magic to give them an advantage or give them the ability to ‘shift’ into a creature of their choice. Only problem is, that some of those answering peoples requests, are not exactly up to the task or doing it for their own needs and desires.
There are suddenly a lot of rogue enchanted people turning up in San Francisco and one is a fire breathing madman who ends up in Adi’s shop and she has to use magic to stop the shop being destroyed. Only problem is that her boss sees her using her powers and she also learns that he is part of the Void Union who would normally execute any rogue user of magic like her, no matter the reason. This is just the first person to be enchanted in the area.
Adi has to try and prove her innocence and prove she only uses magic for non-harmful means, when she needs to discharge magic. She is being closely watched by a lead hunter from the Void Union, who has also the power to shift into a powerful animal, unknown to her bosses. Adi is the prime suspect as she keeps turning up wherever these enchanted people are found. The Void Union wants the person responsible dead!
A great tale as Adi and her workmate Kendall, a squirrel shifter by birth, and her boss Desmond, end up working together to find the source of all these enchantment spells and who is responsible for them. Matters get more personal as the time progresses and Adi has to be careful of not being discovered by her family. Everything she does to trace this uncontrolled enchanter may make her presence become known to those hunting her. Madness may be a better future than what those people have in mind for her.
I loved the book and see that there is another one to be released at the beginning of June, entitled Enchantress Under Pressure. I look forward to reading it when it’s out. The magic is this book is not obvious to start with, until you get more into Adi’s life and what she must do to stay sane, every time her magic backs up. It is a somewhat different look at magical people and shifters, etc, with normal humans and then those called Voids, who cannot be affected by magic forced to sign up and be part of the Union. A great read and interesting story. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion on the book above.
I received an ARC of this book from Sealook Press through NetGalley. What follows is my real and fair review.
Branching out from my regular genres just a bit, I picked up Enchantress Undercover by A.C. Spahn, an urban fantasy novel that introduces readers to a somewhat complex magic system involving enchanters, Voids, and other paranormal creatures. Since I tend to read more high fantasy, this was somewhat new territory for me. Reading Enchantress Undercover made me realize how long it’s been since I read something in the urban fantasy or paranormal romance genres. Spahn’s novel was a decent re-introduction to the genre. Here’s my quick summary:
Adrienne is an enchantress which gives her power to manipulate the world—and people—around her but makes her vulnerable to Voids, individuals unaffected by magic who police the paranormal community. Unfortunately for Adrienne, when she defends her shop from a fire-breathing assailant, her boss sees her use magic. And it turns out, he’s a Void. Now that the Voids know about her, Adrienne must avoid imprisonment while she tries to find the real rogue enchanter.
This book’s strengths lie in its mystery and the backstory it hints at for the main character. Adrienne’s hunt for the real enchanter is fairly straightforward, but it kept the story moving at a fast pace. Furthermore, I actually did not predict the identity of the rogue enchanter while reading the book. It was nice to be somewhat surprised by the ending. In addition, the novel lays down intriguing groundwork towards exploring Adrienne’s past with other enchanters. You learn some about what happened to her when she was growing up, but it would be interesting to see where that aspect of the story goes next.
However, I do think there are some issues with the book, mostly with its treatment of the romantic sub-plot. The book is categorized as “new adult,” which makes sense because its main characters are in their early or mid-twenties, I think. That being said, I don’t there’s any content in the book that a teen couldn’t read. That’s because the novel’s main romance is very tepid. Now, it’s one thing for a book to lack a romantic plot. However, this book dedicated so much time to Adrienne’s attraction to her boss it would’ve been nice for there to be real chemistry between the characters. Furthermore, the book’s rapid switches between Adrienne thinking ‘it’s not time to think about romance’ to immediately thinking about romance, or her bosses abs, were a little annoying.
Overall, this was a quick, easy read. I enjoyed the mystery and fast-pace, though I thought the writing was just average. I wouldn’t mind reading rest of novels in series, but I’m not overly invested.
Recommended for readers looking for an accessible entry into urban fantasy genre.
Adrienne is an enchantress in hiding. The mundane world hasn’t yet accepted magical humans and is still trying to come to terms with the different and sometimes dangerous magical people inhabiting the earth. Adrienne had been flying under the radar of the cult which she escaped from and the magical Union that is trying to recruit her. All that is secondary when her boss/landlord finds out that she is an enchantress and his Void powers can eliminate her if he believes she’s out of control. Adrienne channels her magic through materials that she cobbles together and uses to focus her power. She hides her magic by weaving it into the art pieces she creates in her shop for her customers. Until her attractive landlord finds out that she can create magic. When her life and anonymity is put in jeopardy, she unwillingly becomes involved with a Union operation to draw out the culprits of a dark magic cult. Life is never dull when you are an Enchantress, your best friend is a shape-changing squirrel, and you don’t know if your hot boss is trying to destroy you or kiss you. I particularly like how the author make this a thoroughly modern story. The interactions with internet message boards are not only amusing but totally believable. If there were message boards pertaining to people interested in the magic and it’s practitioners they would totally sound like this. Lastly, Adrienne’s particular talent for making art from found objects to channel magic, appeals to my own artsy nature. It puts a whole new meaning to the word “Witch-craft”!
A compelling New Adult story of mystery, fantasy, magic and a pinch of romance. “Enchantress Undercover” is the first book in the series by A. C. Spahn.
The scene is set in modern day San Francisco. There are normals, paranormals and voids. The paranormals are a secret society held in check by the Voids - who are those who cannot be affected by magic.
Adrienne has a very big secret. Yes she is an enchantress which she has kept hidden from the Void. But she is in hiding from a more dangerous group of people who marked her with a powerful enchantment.
A number of strange paranormal occurrences happening around San Francisco and raw magic build up sets the stage.
A mysterious enchanter is somewhere out there causing chaos and enchanting seekers - those who are normals who believe in magic and what to become a part of the paranormals. After a man breathing fire causes havoc in the Crafters Haven, the Void discover Adrienne. And she becomes the number one suspect.
The Void is not interested in Adrienne’s help to solve the mystery and clear her name. What will Adrienne do so stop the mystery enchanter ? Will she listen to the Void and let them handle the case? Will she and Desmond ever kiss?
Adrienne, Desmond and Kendall (the three main characters) were a good mix, had continuous entertaining banter and have a well balanced friendship. I particularly favored Kendall, simply because she was the quirky comical character and often showed level headedness and logic when needed.
** I received a copy of Enchantress Undercover (Arcane Artisans - Book 1) by A. C. Spahn via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Adrienne Morales is a woman in hiding. After escaping from a dangerous cult of enchanters she is lying low in a city ruled by voids, people immune to magic, she uses her magic only when the pressure becomes too much. When a fire-breathing human covered in enchantments burns down her shop, she must stop him. Unfortunately for her the owner of the store witnesses everything and as it turns out he is a void. Adrienne has just revealed herself to the agency who controls the paranormal. What's more, there is another rogue enchantress out there whose magic is out of control, and the agency believes it's Adrienne harming humans.
I was surprisingly drawn into this book. I had become slightly bored with the repetitive nature of the urban fantasy trope where the heroine who is in hiding from her past and her eccentric friends and a love interest help her save the world, but this book brings a fresh perspective to magic and its origins. While it does follow the trope exactly, there is enough world-building to make it stand out. Fast-paced and full of funny, engaging characters this is an excellent start to a new series. One that I will be following eagerly.
I received an arc of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! This novel contains magic and the supernatural. Adrienne Morales is an enchantress who has been in hiding your years. Her past is something she wants no part of and is afraid of being found. She is an artistic and uses her abilities to "enchant" objects, for she is releasing her magic before it overwhelms and potentially destroys her. Desmond Desoto is a Void, one who is immune to magic and Adrienne's business partner and potential interest. Adrienne becomes nervous when Desmond finds out her secret, for it puts her in the path of The Union. When a rogue enchantress starts causing problem, Adrienne knows she needs to stop her, since The Union believe she is causing all the trouble. Adrienne, Desmond, and their friend Kendall, a shapeshifter, work together to find out who is making all the monsters and destroying minds. When Kendall goes missing, Adrienne and Desmond know they are running out of time. Will they be able to stop the rogue enchantress in time or will Adrienne take the fall for magic she has not done? Looking forward to the next novel in the series!
“Magic can be ugly and ruinous, but it can also be beautiful”
WOWEEEE Can you say fast paced! because this book was straight in there with the good stuff! It grabbed my attention right from the get go. The amount of twist and turns that it had kept me reading until I finished the book, Another book finished in one sitting, I think it was like 5am by the time I finished oops. So much happens that I just couldn’t put it down, every page was filled with magic and every chapter had a purpose, there wasn’t any unnecessary or repeated lines which always seem to bug me. It’s the kind of book you have to keep reading but your going to be super bummed when it ends!! Bookish problems am I right, or am I right!? Then ending was amazing and made me even more excited for the next book! see full review on my blog! https://bookdaydreamersblog.wordpress...
I was provided with the ebook of this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
Enchantress Undercover was a quick, intriguing read about a young enchantress who is running from her traumatic past. She is an artist who enjoys selling her crafts and placing positive enchantments on the items in her shop. When she discovers another enchantress is trying to hurt humans, she becomes determined to stop the person behind the magic, even if it means facing her fears and the people who scare her most.
Overall I would give this book a 3.5 stars. I think there were a few plot holes that needed to be explained better, plus the ending was a little predictable. However, I still think it was an enjoyable read with really likeable characters. I wasn’t sure if I would want to read the sequel, but after reading the epilogue, I think I just might! If you really enjoy spells and magic, I think this book might be a good pick for you.
This was a quick read - nothing too deep, but a nice, light urban fantasy (and introduction to Spahn's series). The main character, Adrienne, is well-drawn, but the supporting cast is not as deep; maybe we'll get more about them in later installments.
The magic system itself is just complicated enough so that it's not just *poof - magic happens!*, which adds a nice touch to the world. I suppose it technically falls into the category of 'light romance', since there are a number of passages dedicated to Adrienne admiring the male lead and the obvious intent is to get them together; in this book their relationship . It wasn't constant, so I don't feel that it was excessive; YMMV.
I found it OK, but I didn't immediately download the next book. I probably will give it ("Enchantress Under Pressure") a chance at some point, though.
I really enjoyed A. C. Spahn’s Enchantress Undercover (Arcane Artisans Book 1). It does what good urban fantasy is supposed to do, come up with imaginative concepts (such as the magic immune “Voids”, and their Union with its mission of executing rogue magic users, or the need of this takes eponymous enchantress, Adrienne Morales, to use magic or else face insanity) and then put them into a rousing tale. Definitely well done here and resulting in a definitely “fun read”. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
I received an Advanced Readers' Copy electronic version of this book from the publisher, Sealook Press, via NetGalley.
A.C. Spahn did an incredible job creating a world that, to me, was unique and different from any other fantasy novel I've read. Adrienne is an Enchantress who has been on the run/in hiding for years from a her traumatic upbringing. She is also an artist, and uses her artistic skills to enchant objects in ways that ease the magic within her and aren't harmful to others. When there appears to be a rogue Enchantress in her city, Adrienne and her friends do what they can to work together to find the person and stop them from causing more harm.
I was captivated by this story and found the world building and general premise to be unique and easy to follow. I also enjoyed the characters, but felt that some of the dynamics between them to be cliche and predicable. That being said, I found myself wanting to know what happens next and will definitely consider reading the second book in the series when it comes out. If you're a fan of magic and urban fantasy, this may be a book that is enjoyable for you!
"How did I not know you are an enchactress?" Desmond askes.
I found this a wonderful story. Take a young woman, who is an enchantress and also hiding from her past, and pair her with a squirrel shifter and a Void, a person unaffected by magic, and what do you get? A little comedy, a little mystery and very light romance.
Adrienne ran away from a cult and has been hiding from them. She is also hiding from the Void Union because she believes they will kill her. When the store she works at gets attacked she finds out the store owner, Desmond, is a Void, too bad since she really likes him.
This story just evolves from there and is a must read to find out if Desmond will try to kill Adrienne and to find out how a squirrel shifter plays into the whole mix.
This was a pretty decent read. I read through it fairly quickly and enjoyed the characters. I guess the reason I gave it a 3 star over a 4 star is that I’ve read a number of stories with the same overall plot so it gets a little tiring. However, I did like it and look forward to reading more from this author. **I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
I RARELY read books about magic. If it's about magic, it's not labeled magic. This one is about magic, but it was more about it being an art. Cause the main character is a crafter, which I loved. Hot glue guns FTW. How the author put people into categories, enchanters, voids, and normals. I wonder who would be what in the world? I really did not expect the ending, I tried so hard to figure it out before it happened, but I was still wrong. It was ominous at the end, you know there has to be a second book.
*thank you netgalley and sealook press for a copy of this arc*
this book just was not fleshed out as well as it needed to be. the concept was fine: an urban fantasy following an enchantress on the run. the story was just lacking. the world building needed WAY more attention; specifically the magic system & it’s rules. the plot was meh. the characters were meh but there was nice funny lines (kendall was great). I loved the latinx representation so that was a plus. overall I just feel as though it could have been longer and needed more build up. it was all very amateur.
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I love this world and how things are described. I was thinking this story was like all the other magic tales I have read before, but I was wrong. Adrienne who is the MC is an enchantress who has to practice her craft in secret to not be discovered by Voids. They are people who are immune to magic. She goes to protect her shop for her artwork, but there is a witness. This puts her life at risk and she has to find who is actually behind it or she will punished for what she is.
