Scotland The Brave

An anthology of three books on Scots history - general, the wars for independence and one on William Wallace. Like most by Captivating History, the writing is easy to read, high level and while not the most engaging, is good for someone looking for an overview. A good intro to Scots history.

Poorly written, rambling and repetitive

Reading various historical texts on Scotland to prepare for an upcoming trip there. I found this series to be poorly written---disorganized, repetitive and rambling. Many typos errors to the point that the lack of care and attention to detail in the writing made me question the care with which the author conducted his research and scholarship. I would recommend Scottish history books by Alistair Moffat over these.

This volume is actually three books in one: Scottish History; Wars of Scottish Independence; William Wallace. Because of their overlapping topics there is some repetition.

The first section consists of topical chapters beginning in the Middle Ages to post World War II. I found its subjects to provide a good introduction to a sampling of issues that have shaped the Scottish nation. The second and third sections place battles such as Bannockburn and Sterling Bridge in context and shed light on the relationships between and relative roles of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and their royal English antagonists.

At the conclusion of this work, I have a greater appreciation for Scotland’s history. What emerged is various tribes who gradually adopted a unified Scottish identity, a country originally independent, led by nobles holding loyalties divided between their Scottish nationality and their substantial English landholdings. Over the ages, Scotland produced multitudes who contributed mightily to civilization through science, arts and letters. I recommend this book as an entry path to the study of the Scottish story.

Book is in three parts and provides good overview of Scottish history. However, you would expect each part to build on the previous but instead it rehashes the same ideas and facts over again adding nothing new.

A poor narrator, who speaks softly and in a monotone, made this impossible to listen to. It did cure my insomnia, but I didn't learn anything new about Scottish History.
