STOLEN GHOULS is the third book in the Greek Ghouls a comedic mystery set in Greece and steeped in ouzo. Life is turning a strange corner for Allie Callas, owner of Finders Keepers, a company dedicated to scoring the ungettable gets and finding things that want to stay lost. Too bad she can’t get Leo Samaras, hot cop and stubborn mule, a new pair of eyes. Leo can’t see Allie’s favorite cake shop—it exists, really it does—but the one thing they both agree on is that there’s a cooling body on the Cake Emporium’s floor. Leo says heart attack. Allie says murder. The dead man’s ghost says murder, too. With a mouth like a drunken sailor and the personality of smallpox, it’s hard to imagine who’d want to kill the man. But Allie’s having a tough time figuring out whodunit. The foul tempered victim was one step up from a recluse, and Allie can’t dig up even one suspect. If that’s not annoying enough, Allie is being stalked by … by … well, she’s not sure exactly, but the invisible nothing can sure toss a cup of coffee and sling pots at her head. With her source to all things woo-woo missing, Allie is fumbling around in a dark closet—literally. Will she and Detective Samaras ever be on the same page long enough to make out? Why won’t her neighbor wear more clothes? And what’s with all the weird pink jars in her client’s house?
2020 bk 310. I'm still laughing. In this book we learn that the bakeshop can only be seen by those with a touch of weirdness about them, but everyone can see the dead body inside the cake- shop. The island's British retiree, the kind of hermit, definite grouch, angered someone. Sadly, when his ghost shows up in Allie's home, he can't remember who it was, just that salt will keep him safe. Can Allie figure out who is stalking her, why she can't get the Brit to be quiet, how to help Jimmy with his love life, her sister understand that both of her children are like Allie and can see ghosts, or and have time for a little romance of her own....
I have so much fun reading this series (and the Kat Makris series). The humour is a tad crude, but really hits the nail on the head with it’s accuracy and creativity.
Love the characters and the location, plus the whole ghost element is so amusing, especially Dead Cat 🐈.
I’m again having some mixed feelings about this book. Despite the plot being just a teeny bit dragged out, the overall story was cute and fun. I loved finding out more about the Honeychurch siblings and about their business. As some answers were revealed, others remain shrouded in mystery and I can’t wait to learn more about these enigmatic siblings I’m incredibly intrigued to learn more about Allie’s ‘guardian angel’ and why he keeps appearing at interesting times. The mystery of this series has me hooked.
The addition of new supernatural beings (and one’s Allie didn’t know existed) wasn’t exactly a surprise at this point, but how the author tied one of these beings to a murder certainly was. I’m not sure I really loved that, but it made the murder, or at least finding out what happened and why, more difficult to solve.
As always though, I really enjoy Kings’ writing style and humor. I’m not sure I laughed as much in this book as I did the prior two, but it was still a fun and lighthearted read. King creates amazing characters, with the ability to think fast on their feet and always have amusing and snappy remarks (which I absolutely adore). This book had a good deal of action and a bit of romance thrown in just for fun.
However, this book had some flaws as well. I finished Royal Ghouls (book 2) yesterday, so it was pretty fresh in my mind. At the end of the book, Allie is left with no food in her cupboards and a smashed computer that will need to be replaced. Stollen Ghouls (book 3) begins at the very moment book 2 ended. And yet, suddenly Allie has food to spare in her cabinets and a magically working computer (and no, it wasn’t fixed ”magically”). I realize that had I not just finished Royal Ghouls (book 2) yesterday, these (albeit minor) details would have been lost to me; easily forgotten altogether or swept under the rug if I hadn’t been completely sure of these facts.
Now, I’m no writer, so I can’t imagine the amount of work and detail authors have to keep track of – even within their own creations. So, there’s a big part of me that can completely understand this simple and non-issue mistake. At the same time, it may be a good idea to go back and read your last chapter if you’re going to begin at the exact moment you left off. Either have a system for remembering those details, or re-read/skim your own work. If you don’t (as in this story), it comes across as incompetent to your readers. Plain and simple.
Additionally (and something I’m having doubts about ever getting away from completely in one of King’s novels), there continues to be several grammatical errors scattered throughout this novel. Missing words, poor sentence structures, and wonky phrases all combine to make certain sections distracting and glaring (and I don’t think I’m the only one who notices). Because there’s so many, this is one thing that can affect my rating quite a bit and I feel like the majority of these editing errors could be so easily corrected. It’s frustrating to see this over and over in the author’s books.
As of now, I’m not sure if King plans on continuing to write books for this series, but I truly hope she does. I am enjoying this so far and I can’t bear to leave so many things unanswered. I look forward to the next book – I just hope there is one!
This series is interesting. Yes, there is plenty of potty humor, Greek with some English translation. Yes, there is an overwhelming focus on weird sex and sexual body parts - no actual sex, just insults and innuendo. Yes, there are constant negative Greek stereotypes. [I tried Googling the author to determine her ethnicity, but I couldn't find anything. As an Italian American, I can understand the humor. Never having been to Italy, I wouldn't write about it. If the "stereotypes" are accurate, this series is hysterical!!]
Despite all the weirdness above, the story is fascinating. It is well developed, uniquely thought out, intriguing, and suspenseful. I did have a feeling about some of the plot early on, but I didn't put it together completely. I was very happy to find out the secret behind the cake shop, since Sam couldn't find it in the previous book. Also there are several storylines unresolved.
A great quirky, cozy supernatural mystery. Looking forward to the next book!
Another great read. She has been seeing ghosts all her life but now he's trying to tell her that her favourite bakery doesn't exist. When she clearly see the display, the brick thrown through the window and the dead body. Everyone thinks that the dead body was an heart attack but having seen his ghost, she knows it was murder. A ghost bent on revenge is now stalking her and the ghost of the dead man. Why did he have countless hmalayan rock salt jars? What did he do to upset the ghost so much? Why doesn't the bakery open? Attacks on her and others follow. What can she do to protect herself and others? Who is the man in black? Can she solve the dispute over the goat?
Stolen Ghouls, A Greek Ghouls Mystery, #3 by Alex A. King
Once again King delivers a dynamite story, full of fun and action, with snappy dialogue, plot twists and turns, and a lot of humor. Also, she continues to refuse to respect the reading public by not utilizing a competent proofreader. The book has several confusing sentences, words that are incorrect, missing words, missing or misplaced quotation marks, etc.
I keep thinking that someone on her team must be reading the reviews of her books, but either she isn't being told that many of her readers complain about this (take a stroll over to Amazon) or she just doesn't care. So why should readers continue to pay to be disrespected?
This is a quick fun read about a woman in Greece who has the job of "finding things". Her life is complicated by the fact that she can see and hear ghosts, who tend to want to complain to her and ask for her help in solving their murders. In this one the scope of her spectral visions includes poltergeists, as she attempts to figure out who murdered the latest dead body she finds in the bakery only a select few can see. Unfortunately, her would-be boyfriend, who is also the local cop, doesn't believe he was murdered.
I have only read the Greek Ghouls books by this writer. I have greatly enjoyed them all and I will try other things available.I especially like the the writing style, as if you are just sitting down for a coffee together and being told of something that happened to her yesterday. It suits the way that I identify with the story teller and feel it all with them, ( although I am a seventy year old man) I hope that makes sense to you, but that is the way that a book I have really enjoyed feels to me.
I unashamedly love books by Alex King. This series is no exception. It was funny, has a bit of romance, an annoying ghost and even some poltergeists. As the series progresses the reader see the development in the characters as well as the storyline. This is not a fluffy cosy mystery, I think this series will turn into something awesome, with lots of Greek humour to lighten the mood
I like the author's take on mediums and things that go bump in the night. Allie may have bitten off more than she can chew this time, what with pushy (and rude) ghosts, cute cops, the man in black, rescuing friends, fending off random attacks, and a pair of succubi with truly bad timing.
Greek ghost takes told with Mrs. King s flair for the dramatic. A sweet shop that's there and not there at the same time. Ghosts, poltergeist and salt, loads of salt. A great read and another p.o.she turned in her ghost takes series.
Funny and quick witted. You’ll laugh until you cry! I can’t wait until the next installment. If you haven’t read the first one, go get it. You won’t be disappointed.
I actually laughed out loud in parts of this book. The Greek culture with mystery and seeing ghosts thrown in is an entertaining read. The conversations flow naturally and the plot and subplots move quickly making it hard to put down. I can't wait for more.
ReD all three books in this series. Could not put them down. The author kept my interest and made me laugh at its Greek word translations. Put me right in the story observing how heroine resolves the murders. Did not want the story to end, but continue.
I love this series more and more with each book I've read. Alex King has an excellent and creative imagination and a wicked sense of humor. It's a really interesting take on the paranormal cozy genre.
Love these books, the love interest, the crazy family, ghosts, mystery all in a well written story. When can I expect book 4, 5,6,7, etc as soon as possible please
Really enjoying the humor in these. The mystery/storylines are getting better and better. All three could use another run through a proofreader though.
