London Coven: A Three-Book Collection

A witch's familiar must protect London from the monsters that lurk in the shadows; the creatures that seek to unravel the fabric of things and send a city to Hell.

Stella Familiar was created by the London Coven out of spit and blood.

She's a fighter, a blunt instrument, built to destroy the forces of evil and keep peace in the capital.

She's carried out her duty for decades, but when the witches who gave birth to her are butchered, it's up to her alone to save a city of nine million people.

Mystery, scares, and fast-paced action collide in this thrilling urban fantasy. London Coven: A Three-Book Collection, combines the first three books in the London Coven series:

Book 1: Familiar Magic
Familiar Magic is an interesting magical fantasy book with a unique twist on witches familiars. The story was entertaining right from the start and fast paced. If you are squimish with violence, this book may not be for you. The only thing that had me pausing was the breaking the fairy in half and drinking their substance to gain power. It was a first for me. The narrator did an excellent job!

Book 2: Nightmare Realm
Nightmare Realm is an interesting and entertaining story involving Stella Familiar and the detective sidekick trying to solve the mystery of the sleeping kids. Stella once again faces off against a big bad against insurmountable odds. I really liked this audiobook. The narrator did an excellent job!

Book 3: Deadly Portent
The team is back trying to resolve more supernatural deaths while trying to protect one of their own. I really enjoyed the addition of Eva Familiar and all of her wit and sarcasm. The story is fast paced with plenty of action and mystery. The narrator once again did a fantastic job with providing unique voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene! I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This 3 story omnibus is strung together as one in the Audible audiobook edition, so it's an awesome value. The stories are action-packed, full of surprises and cliche-breakers, and with interesting, layered characters. The narration is nearly perfect. The writing is mostly smooth, and highly original. No sex scenes or pouty damsels in distress in these books!

Book One: FAMILIAR MAGIC
Stella Familiar is not what I was expecting from a witch's familiar. She's not a pet - she is a kickass assassin, messenger, and magical dogsbody for the trio of witches that protect London. When she is orphaned by the death of her coven, she is determined to find their killer and exact revenge. Other deaths point to a major badguy on the scene, and the stakes are escalated. She has to make her own decisions for the first time, and decide what her life will be from this point forward. Luckily, she saves the life of a police detective who seems to want to partner up with her to discover and nullify the threat.

Book Two: NIGHTMARE REALM
Creepy but clever story in which Stella and David try to protect the children of London from a supernatural threat that captures kids using a scary playground rhyme to enchant them into a coma-like sleep. Unique storyline and lots of tension.

Book Three: DEADLY PORTENT
This was my favorite, probably for the addition of Eva Familiar. Eva is the foil for Stella's dedication to continue her mission to protect the city. Eva's coven are also gone, but she is rejecting all the old rules and living a lone wolf life of fistfights and alcohol. David's miracle resurrection comes back for its price, and a rogue succubus is on the loose, killing citizens. Who can Stella really rely on?

It's easy to (highly) recommend this collection. Stella Familiar is simply one of the best characters out there in urban fantasy land, and each of the books she stars in is pure snarky adventurous fun with well written original plot lines and great characters. I can guarantee that anyone who reads volume 1 in this series will soon be totally addicted. That being the case, paying $4 for a collection vs $7 for purchasing the same books separately is simply a steal.

As individual volumes these books range from (high) 4 to 5 stars. Collectively, and adding in the price savings, I just had to give it five stars. Each of the volumes, and the collection as a whole, is highly recommended.

Since these books truly are stand-alones, here are my reviews volume by volume.

Vol. 1: Familiar Magic

I've no spoilers of Familiar Magic in this review but if you haven't read Underground Magic, the series' excellent prequel, stop right here and go read that. You can get it from the author for free and it's worth the read. Warning though: by necessity this review is a major spoiler of Underground Magic.

This book started off with a gut punch. I'd read Underground Magic and was really looking forward to seeing further interactions between Kala, Trin, & Feal, the three most powerful witches of London, and their newly created familiar Stella Familiar (yes, I've said this before: gotta love that name). Then on page 1 of this book (so not really a spoiler of this book) all three of the witches are found murdered! Humph. (I'd still recommend Underground Magic though as it's s well written back story and great as a stave-alone novel.)

It's really fun following Stella in action as she gets revenge on what killed her creator (see, I'm being careful here: no spoiler-ish hints about what that is). A mystery and a thriller, full of magic and adventure in a really wonderfully thought out plot. An extraordinarily well drawn lead, supported by a wonderful cast of supporting characters and, yes, a final resolution that's fully satisfying while still leaving me salivating for the next book. This was pure fun and highly recommended.

Vol. 2: Nightmare Realm

I love Stella Familiar. She's just the kind of kick-a** heroine I look for and the whole concept of a human(oid) familiar continuing with her mission after her three maker-witches were murdered, is both original and a riot. (As an aside, I still mourn the loss of those three witches, even if they only appeared in the prequel that you can get for free from the author.)

The lead characters, Stella and Detective David Tyler, have great chemistry and I love the dialogue beyeeen them. The plot with its (horrifying to me) evil that puts children to sleep forever, is truly well done. The supporting characters are excellent. If anything, I like this book even more than book 1 and I thought that one was excellent. Bottom line is that this book is simply a fun-blast and highly recummended.

My only complaint is the very ending where MV Stott decided to tease me about the next book. No, it's not a real cliffhanger as the actual story in Nightmare Realm is fully resolved by then, but it still leaves me hanging and sorta panting for the next book. Having said that, it was a pretty neat teaser so I don't know if I'd want it cut. I'm torn and conflicted. Despite that, this book was so good that I'm going to have to give it five stars, something I rarely do.

Vol. 3: Deadly Portent

Another day for Stella and her partner David, murder by mummification to solve and, oh yeah, by the way, the Knot Man has advised that - thanks to Stella's prior use of black magic - David "has changed" so that he's now effectively a "walking apocalypse" (oops), a ticking time bomb that could destroy London if he blows. Don't worry dear reader, this is Stella Familiar we are talking about, the epitome of kick-a** heroines (and by golly, I do so love a great kick-a** heroine) so you k is she'll figure things out.

Why yes, indeedy, there will be a (quite fulfilling) HEA here but the trick is how we get there. MV Stott has (lucky for us) chosen the path of great adventure filled with strongly built characters and wonderful (occasionally snarky) characters. Thank goodness for that, as this book is simply wonderful fun.

I loved everything about Deadly Portent, enough that I'm going to have to cave and give it 5 stars (which I tend to avoid doing). I'm only hoping that the very last line is more than a bit of poetry but is rather a subtle teaser as I want more Stella (yes, I know and am happy that she appears in other Uncanny Kingdom urban fantasies - I just want her in the starring role).

Oh, as you might've guessed, I highly recommend this book (but even though it is totally stand alone, read the other two books first - they're well worth it individually and as setting things up for what will come in this book 3).

Familiar Magic

This first book in the London Coven series, set in the Uncanny Kingdom, is a fantastic start to the series. Stella Familiar has been created by the witches of the London Coven to protect London but she finds herself alone and facing the worst antagonist she has faced in all her sixty years. She finds an unexpected ally, a "normal", but just meeting Stella puts him in great danger. The story is exciting and original and Stella is a unique character in urban fantasy, being a witches' familiar. Oh, and fairies - who knew?
It is such a pleasant change to read a story set in London with places and references that I recognise. This is the companion series to Ghosted which is also set in the Uncanny Kingdom and features the best ghost I have read about in a long time.

Nightmare Realm

After the hellish creature that Stella faced in Familiar Magic, she now faces a seemingly impossible task. An entity is putting London's children to sleep permanently and Stella does not think she is strong enough to deal with the situation. She has help from David, the "normal" policeman, help that he isn't even aware of, and also from Jake Fletcher (from the Ghosted series) who she meets for the first time. Again the story is a rollercoaster of a ride and Stella is a strong, feisty and confident character, even when dealing with childhood emotions, something she has never experienced.
I love this series and the Ghosted series also. They are now firm favourites and long may they continue.
I received a copy of this book from the author but voluntarily decided to write a review and this is my own uninfluenced opinion.

Deadly Portent

I loved this book about a witch's familiar (hence her surname). Stella has more problems on her plate this time and David has his own troubles, although he doesn't really know it. Stella has help (or hindrance) from another familiar and she adds a new dimension to Stella's world. The characters are well defined and distinctive and it's very easy to imagine them. The story moves along at a pace and involves various supernatural races. It is intriguing and exciting.
This is the companion series to the Ghosted series which I have also read and loved.
I received an Advance Reader's Copy but this review is my own opinion and is not influenced by the author.

All I can say is treat yourself to this series, you definitely won't be disappointed (and don't start reading when you don't have much time as you won't be able to put it down).

You can get the prequels to the London Coven and Ghosted free on the authors' website (genrereader.com) and they are well worth reading. They can be read at any time but I read them first and I would recommend that you do too as they help put both series into context.

Format: audiobook
Narrator : Heather Tracy
This was a new to me author, I say was because after listening to this set I will be devouring as many books by these authors as possible. This is such an fantastic world to get lost in, I’m well and truly hooked.

Bk 1: Familiar Magic
Great start, dramatic, intriguing and grabs your attention instantly. Stella Familiar was created by a powerful coven, a lowly familiar! But when Stella is met with a horrific scene and then lands, quite literally, in front of detective David Tylor a hunt ensues to find the powerful creature threatening London.
A fabulous story with twists and tricks to keep you guessing and the Narrator does a fantastic job.

Bk 2: Nightmare Realm
Stella Familiar is all that is left from the London Coven but she’s just a familiar, how is she expected to keep London safe? Until a new trio of witches comes she is all there is.
When every child in the city both normal and supernatural is in danger Stella much face the nightmare of saving them alone, or is she? there’s some interesting things going on with detective David Tylor.
Another fantastic story helped alone by this awesome narrator.

Bk 3 : Deadly Portant
I’ve liked David’s sarcastic wit throughout these book but I love Eva familiar, several times in this story she’s had me chuckling even as the pressure on Stella increases, can she do what apparently needs to be done regarding David? Another fantastic story full of drama and excitement that kept me on the edge of my seat and left me wanting more, please tell me there’s more!
As well as seeking out more work by these authors I’ll definitely be looking at what else this narrator has done because she is brilliant.

I was provided a copy of this book free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

So I've just finished book 3 after a little over 6 months as I split the series up but this little review will be for all 3 books.

The stories follow the adventures of Stella Familiar, a magical being brought into existence by the London Witches who, at the start of book 1, are murdered in a most gruesome manner.

Early on she runs into David, a policeman who becomes embroiled in her quest for revenge and he offers a great sense of comic relief throughout all 3 books.

Stella herself is wonderfully aggressive, be it with magic or her fists, and she's not against beating answers out of her foes which is great as, all too often, women are portrayed as being meek or using just charms to get there way while Stella is happiest when she's breaking a chair over someone's head.

The stories vary from the who-dubbit of book 1 to the fantastically creepy childcatchers of book 2 and book 3 really shakes up the dynamics with a major character change, but all 3 are equally as good as one another.

There is some minor gore and quite a free lesser cuss-words, so this is firmly teen onwards but, as a 40-something, I never felt spoken down to nor like I was reading a children's fable.

The narration throughout is perfect, with brilliantly varied voices for all the cast and I'm really pleased Heather didn't try to make her voice masculine for David, but still made him instantly recognisable and everyone had a real sense of identity.

In all, a very enjoyable trilogy of stories with a brilliant protagonist, a wealth of very interesting characters, all beautifully narrated and so this one I very recommended.

The star of this collection of books is a witch's familiar who is a human-seeming creature rather than a black cat or similar, she finds herself without a coven when her witches are killed in a particularly gruesome fashion and sets out to find out who is responsible and to also carry on their work of protecting London from supernatural dangers.

Besides Stella, there is a strong and entertaining cast of characters working with her and a good baddie opposing her that all helps to draw the reader into these books that also feature a well-realised supernatural world within the familiar London setting.

The narrator serves to enhance this series of books with distinctive tones for the main character and a varied supporting cast that requires a range of accents.

Overall, an entertaining collection of books with good pacing to ensure it doesn't feel too long to go through all three at once.

We are again on another roller coaster ride with Stella Familiar and her sidekick Detective David Tyler. They are trying to save the children from the evil that attacks in their sleep and the children never wake up from. They are joined with Jake Fletcher from the Ghosted series. Unexpected twists and turns. Unable to put down. Ending leaves us eager for the next book in this series. Highly recommend all of them. I voluntarily received an advanced readers copy of this book and loved every page of it. This was my honest opinion.

This is a interesting concept dealing with the Familiar to a Coven of Witchs that killed. The MC is the Familiar and this is about how she tries to continue to protect London after her Coven is gone. The other MC is a Detective that she meets and they eventually become a team trying to protect London.

In Familiar Magic, Stella Familiar was created by the 3 head witches of London to carry out their duties out in town. That is her only purpose, until something kills her witches. The first book introduces you to Stella and tells her story. This is a really great series and will take you on a wild ride. The set gives you a great deal on all three books. Once you start, beware, you will be hooked.

This review is for the first three audible books in the London Coven Series an urban fantasy.
Book 1 is Familiar Magic
This story sets the premise of storyline, we get to know the characters, who they are and a feel for how Stella our heroine a familiar created by three sister witches now deceased takes over for them and is determined to find there murderer and keep the peace in London.

Book 2 Nightmare Realm
In this story Stella finds that the barriers that her creators have installed are coming down, she must figure out how to resurrect them and save the children of London.

Book 3 Deadly Portent
This story has gotten personal for Stella. There is a sucubus on the loose murdering people, a wizard wants her friend, the man she has gotten close to killed. Stella is on a mission to bring peace, justice and hopefully save the man she maybe falling for.

This has been a fun fantasy journey.
Heather Tracy did an amazing job bringing these characters to life, and there where many, I can’t imagine how she did them all, but you must listen to hear them and see what I mean.
