George Raymond Richard "R.R." Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten.
Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: The Hero, sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.
In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.
As a conscientious objector, Martin did alternative service 1972-1974 with VISTA, attached to Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation. He also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and was a Journalism instructor at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa, from 1976-1978. He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher.
In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.
Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986. In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.
Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.
He'll never finish this, there's just no way.... He's not even done with Winds-Dunk and Egg-Dream of Spring-his five shows he's PERSONALLY producing at HBO(besides the GOT spin offs) If he had even the slightest respect for his fans Fire and Blood would've been one volume or release within a year of one another.
People should not hate the man so much, if i was him i would do it to, al those pressure that's laying on you because everyone wants the sequel. But give the man some slack please.........
It will come........and if not than so be it! Just see it as a tv show that got cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons, its a bummer but you will get over it......
Better than part one but main source is still the fool, altought there are other "more reliable sources in this one also. Language is better and I feel like much of the unnessessary stuff have been left behind and only the considerable stuff is left.
Solid up until the Dying of the Dragons. The Targaryen family tree gets super confusing, which makes the story difficult to follow. Aegon’s conquest through Jaheares is great.
This took forever for me to finish. It’s probably not bad but I didn’t read enough to keep track of so many characters. The original books were easier probably because I had seen the show. It was still well written and had a funny way to make it seem like historical work with the different sources. Anyway I’m very glad I’m done and maybe it’s my bad but it took too long for me to read for me to give it a high rating sadly Hope he finishes the first series at some point that’s all..
Imagine having one of the most interesting universes to explore conflicts, marriages, battles and wars, but reducing it to a list of things that happened.
Not only does it feel like nothing of consequence happened (strange, right?), but the people are equally as forgettable. Derivations of the same names for the families does not help.
I feel like G.R.R. Martin wasted his time on this book. I wish he had spent his time finishing the main series. However, at the very least he set it up in a way that the HBO Series had a lot of creative license and they did it justice.
Like part one, this took forever to read.. It is like a history book that makes it heavy to read. And all of these characters and names... I had to print out targaryens familytree to look at from time to time because it is confusing... Love all the dragons (i always love the dragons) so this book made me really sad... but thats whats gives this book 2.5 star and not 1 star! I like to feel things when I read a book!
This book was a really hard read for me. I had to force myself to finish it. Reads as a historical text rather than a work of fantasy fiction. It felt slow and I wasn't a fan of the perspective it was written from.
I'll believe it when I see it, c'mon George, finish winds of winter please 🥹 I'm praying so hard for you to live until all the books are finished 🙏 not even gods believe I could do it 🤣
