Sara Bourgeois is a Midwesterner through and through. She spends her time writing, reading, herding cats, and standing in her driveway during tornado warnings. (You can't see them from the basement.)
Mummy knows best by Sara Bourgeois. When Zoe Magnolia’s mom, Willow, falls head over heels for the head of a traveling history exhibit, Zoe thinks that maybe her mom has a real chance at love. But, when the man turns up dead on Willow’s front lawn, the town begins to eye the Magnolias with suspicion once again. She’s determined to bring peace and quiet back to the small town of Destiny Cove, but will her quest lead her right into a killer’s snare? A good read with likeable characters. Little slow in places but I read it. 3*.
Zoe Magnolia, a Kitchen Witch, went to visit her mother, Willow, to discuss Thanksgiving plans and such. But much to the surprise of Ginger, Zoe’s Guinea pig familiar, Zoe’s mother had gotten a CAT! The cat’s name was Sage and she strutted out of the room after telling them all not to speak about her as if she were not there. Zoe could not imagine her neat-freak mom cleaning a litterbox, but Willow had discovered that a cleaning spell worked just fine without her having to personally clean it. The cat was intended to keep Ginger out of the way because Willow considered Ginger a “rat” and rats carried plague which a spell would not keep away. There was no convincing her that the Guinea pig was not a “rat”. But now her mom was trying to hurry them out, apparently because Richard “Richie” Speck, a most likely fraudulent traveling exhibit guy, was coming over to see her. The two had taken a shine to each other, but Zoe didn’t like the man. His aura was all wrong.
The next day, Zoe’s magical cookbook flipped pages to try to warn her about something bad by means of the titles of each recipe. But Zoe wasn’t quite sure of the specific warning it was trying to give her, but she baked each of the items it provided. As she opened the bakery, her mom was pacing back and forth at the door. She blurted out that Richie was dead on her front lawn! No, she hadn’t called the police yet. When the “Peppermint Protection” cupcake buzzed as she gave it to her mom, she knew it must have been meant for Willow. But protection from what? Willow ate the “Strawberry Shield” cupcake as well, because an extra layer of protection was a good idea. When Laurie Demonte entered, the “Triple Berry Truth” cupcakes began to buzz and the other two joined in! But Laurie stared at the cupcakes, then turned around and left immediately. Would Zoe and Joe, the Sheriff, be able to track down the murderer?
This is the second book in this adorable cozy mystery series with an awesome cast of characters. The story line was very good and moved at a quick pace to keep the reader involved. The characters, as mentioned, were wonderfully depicted and the author kept her signature touch of humor interspersed to keep everything upbeat. Don’t miss this one! There is always so much going on and it will be fun to join the fun as they try to unravel why Richie was murdered!
Zoe's mother, Willow, was finally beginning to date again, a decade after Zoe's Dad had died from a heart attack. It was nice for Zoe to see Willow happy, but she certainly had a lot of reservations about Richie Speck, the guy who Willow was dating. For one, he did not appear to be genuine. Secondly, the stuff he totes around, claiming to be ancient Egyptian relics did not appear to be genuine. Even the townsfolk did not think he was genuine. But the worst bit must be the fact that he was found dead, early in the morning, on Willow's front lawn. Which certainly did not bode well for the Magnolias as this was not the first dead body found on their watch - Zoe and Willow had been implicated before in murders that happened in their town. Being witches only helped the gossip to churn our even more judgemental rumours about them.
I always enjoy Sara Bourgeois' stories and this is no exception. They are fun and relaxing to read, with enough mystery to keep you reading and guessing. I especially like Joe, Zoe's mortal boyfriend, or should I say long suffering mortal boyfriend, who loves her enough to overlook the fact that she is magical, something that he find very difficult to accept and certainly to be comfortable with. Of course there is also Ginger, her guinea pig familiar, who is very sweet and makes me smile with what she has to say. I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Mummy Knows Best #2 - This is a better story than The Witching Hour. Well written and fast paced, the storylines are interesting keeping the reader involved in the quickly read story. The killer is easily figured out near the beginning of the story but the journey to solving the murder is good. The characters are still likable and Ginger has a boyfriend. There's good humor and good witchcraft.
Willow has gotten a grip on her cleaning madness, which is something that annoyed me in TWH. The story needs minor editing, but the errors weren't distracting. I contacted the author to review her books and received this book through Booksprout. 4*
The Witching Hour #1 - This is my first book by this author and I thought it was OK. There was too much emphasis on her mother's cleaning and her cleaning supplies. Ginger the guinea pig familiar is adorable; I really like her personality.
It took a while but this quickly read, simple story did get interesting and most of the characters are likable. Not a bad mystery, worth reading when wanting a quick story with humor and good magic. This is a good introduction to the series and I did like the fact the witch used her powers instead of "the too common denying who she is theme". I found this book on Booksprout.co. 4*
if your mom was ever single, and you dealt with the funky dating stuff, you might get a good laugh out of this story.
as much as you might want mom to be happy, love and be loved, dating is just weird when anybody does it.
Zoe is accurate when she jokes it would probably be weird with anyone mom dated, but this guy.....
in this camp funny story, Richie the curator of an allegedly antique curio collection feels a lot like a shyster.
apparently, he was attractive to several ladies, not all of whom were available.
I really love the talking, magical animal familiars. The talking guinea pig has now been trumped by the former male witch, now sheep and he like it, Trucker.
You really cannot beat the guinea pig, the sheep and the witch racing to the rescue - or so they hope - if nothing goes wanky with their magical efforts.
sweet, funny, and a bit romantic - at least Zoe and the sheriff found a good recipe for romance. Maybe her mom can be next!
Looking forward to their next Destiny Cove adventures!

Zoe finds herself with her hands full when her mother’s new boyfriend is found dead on Willow’s front lawn. Who wanted the head of a traveling history exhibit dead and why was he left on Willow’s doorstep? With all signs pointing to Willow as the murderer, Zoe is determined to clear her mother’s name. With the help of her guinea pig familiar Ginger, can they find the killer before he strikes again?
This book is filled with lots of humor coming mostly from the familiars – Ginger the guinea pig that loves to bug Willow (she calls him a rat), Sage the cat who is filled with “cattitude”, and Trucker the sheep who used to be a male witch. I love the magical cookbook that leaves Zoe hints through its recipes.
If you are looking for a book that has humor, paranormal beings, magic, a bit of romance, mystery, and lots of madcap adventure, then this is definitely one you will want to pick up and read.

A good read. Not terrific as it just seemed a bit flat and I knew who the culprit was virtually from the beginning. The characters could do with a bit more work as they lacked feeling realistic. When her mother comes to her bakery and states that her new boyfriend's body is lying dead on her front lawn, she knows that she has to do something to clear her name. Apparently the man had been stringing along several women in town. The question was who? With her officer boyfriend along she goes to the funeral home to get his ghost to them who had killed him. Unfortunately he makes a bid for freedom and whilst they are fighting to keep the other ghosts away he goes into hiding? Will they find the killer? Will they be able to send the ghost back? Is it one of the women he was dating or someone else who decided that they had enough of him?
Verified ARC Reader Oh No!!!!! What did Willow do?????????This was such a good story. Penny has another murder to investigate, this one involves her mom, Willow. Penny is doing great, the bakery is doing good, her romance with Joe is rock solid and Ginger, the guinea pig, is awesome as always. I really like that the familiars in these stories aren't cats, its refreshing to see something different. And did Joe really say the "L" word? I don't want to give anything away, but if you like fast mysteries that are wrote well with a bit of magic, then this is the book for you. Another fun read from Ms Bourgeois. This time it&'s Zoe's mother who could be in the frame for murder. Fortunately, the romance between Zoe and the sheriff has moved along and he is more comfortable with her magic. Ginger the guinea pig familiar is still my favourite character, Zoe has help from a friend in this book as well. A lighthearted and fun read but I find the idea of the town paying for a funeral for a philanderer that was just passing through the least believable part of the story. Maybe this is normal in America, but in the UK I don't believe it would be possible.

This is a entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. Great cast of characters with a fun and entertaining storyline. Zoe is a witch who owns a cupcake shop in her little small town. The town is full of which is another supernatural as well as humans. Her best friend is the local sheriff and her familiar is a guinea pig. She puts a little bit of magic into her cupcakes that she makes each day and helps all of the locals when they’re in need. She also tends to help the police solve mysteries on occasion. It is a fun and entertaining series and an easy read. Check it out
This book builds on the first, although you could read them alone. Zoe and Joe are attempting to date, in spite of Joe's fears of witchcraft, and Zoe is building her bakery. Her mom, Willow has started dating, that is until her boyfriend is found dead on her front yard.
Now Zoe is working to solve this mystery and Joe is getting more and more used to witchcraft.
Zoe is moving on from her being of accused of murder months before, when she gets a call from her mom that there is a dead body in her front yard. Well Zoe isn’t going to let her mom go down for murder, so she decides to solve the murder along with her familiar and a new friend. It was fun but she’s all of a sudden dating the sheriff and there was no story about it!
The Magnolia women found themselves in the center of another murder investigation with Willow as the prime suspect. Glinda and Trucker were hilarious additions to Zoe's crime solving team. I laughed at Ginger crushing hard on Lupine Marrok and can't wait for their story.

When Zoe shows up at work getting ready to bake her cookbook flips to 3 different recipes for her to make. So Zoe sets out to make them when her mom shows up telling her the guy she was dating is dead on her front lawn. Now Zoe must solve this murder to clear her mother's name. I received an advanced readers copy of this book and the review is voluntary.
She is glad when her mother finds love but life is never that easy for her family. He ends up dead and her mother is the suspect. She then has a mummy follow ing her. Can she save her mother? Can she find the real murderer? See if she can

Still enjoyable series. Ginger, the guinea pig familiar, rocked it again! One of the better young witch series as the heroine seems to have a better relationship with the law enforcement officer - who is aware that she's a witch and actually lets her use some powers to help him. Definitely entertaining series. Will read the next one.
This book is entertaining. I figured out the culprit early and then it seemed as if the book was a little disjointed in the plot. It was a good book told in the first person. First person is not my favorite style.
This was fun to read around Halloween w with all of its werewolfs, witches, familiars, regular humans, and mummy curse.
arc review I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. In Destiny cove Zoe mom's new boyfriend is found dead in her lawn now there is a new mystery to follow .cute
I loved this book. Zoe believes her mom has finally found someone to love but then one night he turns up dead on her doorstep and Willow is the prime suspect so Zoe must do everything to solve the crime before her mother never sees an unlocked door again.
This is the second book in this entertaining, paranormal, cozy series, and I loved it even more than I did the first one. I am loving how the characters are developing more and the new characters that are being added. I can't wait to see what's next!
This was a cute story. A love square gone wrong...the man was a womanizer and basically got what he deserved, but it all got pinned on Willow. I love that Zoe and Joe are working out, they make a cute couple.
Mom has a good man, who ends up dead and than later wrapped as a mummy. Who killed him? Zoe's familiar is a guinea pig named Ginger and her friend's familiar is a sheep named Truck. Things get interestubg
I enjoyed this mystery. I like Zoe uses magic cupcake recipes. When her mother is suspected of murder, Zoe is helped by her witch friends and their familiars. I like they all do not have cats, but different animals instead. I like the humor.
This book is another fast and charming read as part of a series by Ms. Bourgeois. I'm enjoying her books so much that I can't wait to start the next book in this series.
Zoey is excited that her mom is finally in love...until the guy ends up dead on her mother's front lawn with her mother's fingerprints on the murder weapon. Zoey, with the help of her talking guinea pig must use whatever spells she can to clear her mother's name.
This is such a sweet cozy mystery series. I can't wait to see what antics Zoey gets up to next!
Zoe and her familiar, Ginger the guinea pig and a total riot. This story was fun and fast paced. A very nasty and manipulative man is murdered and Zoe’s mother is being set up as the fall guy. Zoe’s snooping reveals secrets and hidden items. Of course the introduction of her friend Glinda’s familiar as a sheep named Trucker was hilarious. You will enjoy the story and become entranced by the small town as you weave your way through the mystery.
