Jean Craighead George wrote over eighty popular books for young adults, including the Newbery Medal-winning Julie of the Wolves and the Newbery Honor book My Side of the Mountain. Most of her books deal with topics related to the environment and the natural world. While she mostly wrote children's fiction, she also wrote at least two guides to cooking with wild foods, and an autobiography, Journey Inward.

The mother of three children, (Twig C. George, Craig, and T. Luke George) Jean George was a grandmother who joyfully read to her grandchildren since the time they were born. Over the years Jean George kept one hundred and seventy-three pets, not including dogs and cats, in her home in Chappaqua, New York. "Most of these wild animals depart in autumn when the sun changes their behaviour and they feel the urge to migrate or go off alone. While they are with us, however, they become characters in my books, articles, and stories."

Beautifully illustrated, with a slightly humorous storyline, this is a great picture book companion to the Mountain trilogy. 🏞

Jacob's favorite animal is the peregrine falcon so this story was perfect for him. Looking forward to reading "My side of the Mountain" this year from this author.

According to the blurb here at Goodreads, Jean Craighead George is "the greatest living writer of nature stories for children."

Exciting to meet her now, through the book: I'm eager to see more of the art by Daniel San Souci too, because that front cover looks mighty impressive to me.

LANGUAGE LIKE THIS IS NOT WHAT I'D EXPECT FOR A PICTURE BOOK

For instance:

Sam was very protective of Oski.

Excellent, sure. Yet it seems several grades about what I'd expect to be comfortable for a reader of picture books. Love those unusual verbs!

This book is clearly sophisticated, verbally and conceptually and visually: Picture book or not.

Ending is outstanding, for sure. And so IMO is everything else about this magnificent book. Also noteworthy....

WOW, THE FIRST INSTANCE IN A PICTURE BOOK OF A CHARACTER MEASURING SOMETHING

At least, this is the first example I've ever found. Sam Gribley, aiming to protect his next box, measured its height: 14 feet tall.

I'm enraptured. A picture book character finds the presence of mind -- and equipment -- to accurately measure something? Wowee!

A fun little mini adventure of a weasel trying to get to a nest and being thwarted, much like the unfortunate coyote, over and over again. Cute story, some educational moments, and everyone's happy in the end.

George, Jean Craighead; Frightful's Daughter Meets The Baron Weasel Dutton Children's Books(a division of Penguin Young Readers)Language-G, Sexual Conten-G, Violence-G,
The life of wild animals is very different from our domesticated pets. In this story, which pulls characters from George's My Side of the Mountain novels, both Baron Weasel and Oksi Falcon have young to take care of and provide food for. The trouble is that young falcon is a delicacy for weasels and Baron Weasel's family is hungry. This story will delight fans of George's previous work, however a casual reader will be put off by the slow story line and dense text.

jean craighead george and dan san souci tell a wonderful story (a version of a locked room mystery) in which the reader/hearer learn a different ending than the main character does. quite clever.

i'd love to see a show of san souci and wendell minor's art side by side.

The part about Sam living in a hemlock tree is a little far fetched but the dynamic between weasel and falcon is well written.
