Jude Every rock band needs their bad boy, right? That's me. Hookers, drugs, DUIs— been there, done that. I'm in a Downward Spiral and proud of it (see what I did there?). When the band manager, Archer, hires Bennett to keep me from screwing up while the band is on hiatus, I may have finally met someone who won't take my attitude lying down. With the three of us cooped up together for weeks on end, I have a feeling things might get interesting.
Archer Downward Spiral is my baby. Not only am I the band manager, I discovered them ten years ago when they were nothing but a bunch of high school kids playing in a hole in the wall bar on the weekends. But it’s obvious I haven’t done a great job because they’re falling apart. If the lead singer isn’t trying to kill himself, it’s the bass player telling me he can’t write any new songs. And no one gets under my skin more than Jude, who seems determined to snort and drink himself into an early grave. There's only one man I can think of who might be able to get Jude back on the right track, Bennett Schmitt. Unfortunately, he's also the man I let get away sixteen years ago and haven't gotten over since.
Bennett If there's one thing I know how to do, it's taking control of a situation. In fact, control is kind of my thing. Which is probably why I'm the best in the business when it comes to getting out of control celebrities back on track. When my ex calls and tells me he's desperate for my help, I can't turn him down. Between the infuriatingly sexy drummer with no idea what kind of trouble he's asking for, and my ex looking better than ever, there's no way this isn't about to get messy.
* This is an MMM romance with D/s play and mild daddy kink (NO age play), check inside for more details on what to expect.
K.M.Neuhold has long since been a romance junkie. When she’s not writing she’s reading or spending time snuggling with her husky or her husband. She fell in love with M/M romance last year and hasn’t been able to turn back. There’s nothing she loves more than love in all its forms.
Another fabulous entry in the Replay series from K.M. Neuhold. It takes skill to write any believable relationship but, for me anyway, there's an even greater risk in writing about multiples and making it feel like you're watching a real-life throuple or more.
In Beat of Their Own Drum K.M. nails it perfectly. I felt all the love and pent-up frustration that both Archer and Bennett had been dealing with since their split 16 years earlier, and how they were desperately trying to find their way back to reconnecting in a way which could take them forward.
Jude fit into that gap perfectly, he was exactly the bridge that was missing from their earlier relationship and the one that they didn't realise was the missing piece until Archer called in Bennett to try and get Jude off the rails.
This story once again happens concurrently with the other band members' stories so we see a slice of the relationship which has been alluded to in both Lincoln and Lando's books and I really love this way of doing things. It brings an added depth when you see, as a reader, the detailed part of what was only hinted at elsewhere.
The BDSM in this one is light, Jude needs the discipline Bennett gives him but he also needs Asher to be his Daddy, to show him he's loved and cared for. The three of them together make up one perfect relationship.
Now just Benji's romance is left and I have to say, the sneak peek we got in this one intrigued me to no end!
#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review
Beat of Their Own Drum is the third book in K.M. Neuhold’s Replay series. The stories follow the members of Downward Spiral who, at ten years into their star-making career, are pretty much falling apart personally (or at least that’s the case for the characters the series has focused on so far). What is really interesting about this series is that the stories are happening concurrently. The band is a mess and Archie has set up time for the guys to take a break from their non-stop touring and recording schedule to try to pull things together. So the books take place during this break period and the story plays out in interesting ways, particularly as we already know things that are happening for the other characters while we are reading about Jude, Archer, and Bennett. It also means that you can read these stories as standalones, as the band members are mostly doing their own thing in their stories (I read this third book, but Sammy reviewed the first two). However, the books do feature flashbacks that relate to the whole band, and the guys do interact with one another at times, so I think your experience will be richer if you read them all.
Jude is the very talented drummer for the super star rock band "Downward Spiral". Unfortunately, the band’s name seems to be their destiny if Archer, their manager, can’t get these guys to quit self-destructing. Jude has made a name for himself as the band’s bad boy. He has a well-publicized taste for hookers and coke....and not the bottled kind. Little does anyone...not even his band mates and manager know... it is all a self-destructive means he believes will offer self-preservation. A little coke and a rent boy that won’t get attached numbs him so he can protect himself from the years of hurt for not being good enough for anyone...especially not his father. Archer knows that it is his responsibility to get Jude under control and that that will mean calling the one and only man that can destroy his heart...his ex-fiancé. Bennett is known for being the one that can be depended on to get celebrities back under control. What Archer and Bennett weren’t prepared for was the attraction that they would feel for this young man. Now they need to figure out is what to do with those feelings and how to get Jude on board. My slight problem with this story was the way that the D/s storyline was presented. I agree that Jude needed structure and control, but what he needed above all else was acceptance and love. His “acting out” was a product of his childhood and his completely non-relationship with his father. Bennett went into overdrive being his Dom....and that didn't seem to be what he needed at the time it was taking place. I liked Bennett, but I thought that his methods were too hard and he never ever once, throughout the entire story.... gave Jude aftercare of any type. For Bennett, life was about structure and rules, consequences, punishments and rewards and above all...control. I just felt that he, of the two guys in the relationship with Jude, should have been the one to do everything in his power to insure that "their boy" was in his right headspace...every... single... time. Overall...it's not a bad story...just a few glitches...but I love this author and I'm looking forward to Benji's story and to seeing what happens with the band. Thank you to Kenneth Obi for the great job with the audio on this one.
I’ve loved this series from the start so I was thrilled to be asked to review Beat of Their Own Drum by K.M. Neuhold and I did love this book despite that I’m not a huge fan of Daddy kink, but in this case it seemed to work pretty well. This book was complex, emotional, and undeniably sexy.
For years Jude, drummer for the hit band Downward Spiral, has been on his own downward spiral brought on by his low self esteem and has self medicated with drugs and prostitutes. With the band on hiatus, band manager Archer decides with the other band members on vacation he hires his ex-boyfriend Bennett to help Jude get clean and healthy. What Archer doesn’t expect is his attraction to Bennett is as strong as ever and Bennett has made it clear he is ready to rekindle their relationship something Archer knows will be a dead end, what he doesn’t count on is Jude being the missing piece of their puzzle.
This was a complicated story with many layers and three men in varying points in their lives. Bennett honed in on Jude’s submissive side pretty quickly and Jude realized he got a thrill when he pleased Bennett. Yet, Jude also needed a soft place to land which is where Archer came in once he got passed his issues. I enjoyed watching them figure out the ins and outs of their triad relationship especially when Bennett and Archer had a past and Jude and Archer have a business relationship. The kink was on the mild side which was fine with me and while I’m not a huge fan of Daddy kink, it worked in this instance. While Bennett was a bit too much of a hard a$$ most of the time, I appreciated that he not only made sure Jude stayed on track, he put Archer’s needs first and for someone who was always looking after others, it was high time someone took care of him. My one big problem was considering Jude had been using “blow” for as long as he had, his “recovery” time was laughable. I can overlook a lot in books, but glossing over a drug or alcohol problem is something that doesn’t work for me.
We get a good look at the other band members and they make some big decisions about their future, in addition it looks like Benji’s story will be pretty entertaining as well.
A good addition to what has been an excellent series; I thoroughly enjoyed Beat of Their Own Drum.
KM Neuhold has a thing for writing fantastic MMM, and this is one of her best yet. Jude, Archer, and Bennett are all so different and have their own issues, but they slot into each other's lives much better than I imagined they could. And I loved it. The dynamic between Archer and Bennett had me hurting for them.. how terrible to be so in love but so seemingly incompatible in one critical area. But Jude? Jude is the perfect bridge for them to find their way back to each other for keeps.. and to him.
I really enjoyed getting to know the real Jude in this book, and to finally see what makes him behave the way he has for years. He broke my heart and I completely fell in love with his character in a way I wasn't expecting. Archer's idea to bring Bennett into the situation to try to help Jude is entertaining to watch play out, but ends up being the catalyst for some real change and growth on Jude's end. But Bennett alone is not enough, and I love the way Archer's relationship with Jude complements Bennett's. The three of them have a lot to work through, but while their journey is difficult, it is also sweet and sexy and a little bit kinky. The author does an incredible job of showing the balance in their triad and I was sad to see it end. I can't wait for the next in this series!
I’m a fan of the Replay series and I’ve been wanting to read this story since I listened to the first book. I love a well written polyamorous book, the navigation of a poly-relationship fascinates me. But I’m also picky about the kind of poly relationship I enjoy reading about. I need the participants to be equals in that relationship, equally important, equally loved, all being seen, no one left out. So I just had to know how Jude, Archer and Bennett would make it all work.
On the one hand I really liked this story – at least on the surface. I enjoyed how Bennett “handled” Jude, that he got him and what he needed. That Bennett and Archer finally was together again. How they all worked together as a whole, completing each other. That they all had their place and part in the relationship.
But looking more deeply there are quite a few things that are lacking for me. It all felt a bit too easy to believable, but that’s also something I can easily live with. What I had a harder time with was that I felt like Jude’s drug addiction was more of a plot device rather than part of who he was. In the beginning of the book Jude was tripping, desperate for one more hit, nose bleeding, not caring about anyone or anything – least of all himself. In short he was a mess. Then, enter Bennett and addiction and craving was magically gone, barely any mention what so ever – only to reappear to cause some minor drama in the end of the book.
And for those of you that like a little kink in your reads, this book will surely make you happy. It’s much dirtier than the others, and not only because of the D/S relationship between Ben and Jude, or the daddy kink, but also the amount of hot and heavy sex scenes. It wasn’t my cup of tea, but I know that it will speak to many readers with much dirtier hearts than mine ;)
That’s also another thing that didn’t quite work for me. I felt like the relationship, the feelings between the three men were shoved aside for sex. More than once they said they would talk about how their relationship would work, the next step. They made such a big deal about honesty and sharing their thoughts etc, but the next minute they were in the living room fucking. Not really the productive kind of talk I was looking for. For me it made their relationship lack depth.
My favourite part of this book might just be Kenneth Obi’s narration (Colour me shocked). He narrated the hell out of this book. He captured all three of our main characters perfectly, the gruff and bossy Bennett, the gentler, but still controlling Archer and the out of control Jude. They have all distinct voices and Obi clearly shows that. Jude’s playfulness and insecurities comes out clearly. I loved the accent for Archer. I also loved the feelings Obi added to the situations, he made you feel – in a good way and I would gladly have listened to him for many more hours.

This story ticked all my boxes, even if I don't understand a threesome. And at one point, at 75%, I was confused about the large number of kinks Jude engages in, within a week of meeting Bennet. There was no mention of love, trust, admiration, longing, consequences or future. Just 'let's be a threesome'.
What annoys me in this great narration is the moment where two words are corrected with a second recording, and you can totally tell. The few places where a soft sound in the studio is recorded, are not so bad. At another point, there are words missing and you hear a stretch of silence.
I don't know how to rate this. Well... I DO know how, but I can't bring myself to do it. Here it is in a nutshell. I was down for the BDSM relationship with Ben and Jude. I didn't buy the relationship between all three. I would have understood it better if this was just considered a poly relationship with Ben and Archer and Ben and Jude. The addition of the little EXTRA in the relationship between Archer and Jude just ruined it for me. Also, the pet name that Archer used? Ugh. I don't have an issue with Daddy kink. Heck, I ENJOY some good Daddy kink. Archer has NEVER shown any interest in Daddy kink, but suddenly he is ALL IN? He didn't get Ben's want/need of a BDSM relationship, yet suddenly it's hot? Come on!!!! The Daddy/boy part was unnecessary. It was made worse, for me, because Ben had to suggest that was what Archer was to Jude. That dog don't hunt.
So, I adored the first two books of this series. I can't bring myself to rate this. Maybe I can read this later and it will resonate with me like the others.

I'm always really excited when a new KM Neuhold book comes out and even more so when it's MMM, and I loved this latest story in the Replay series. Jude is on a path to total destruction when Archer decides that the band needs a complete break. Bennett is Archers ex and agrees to come on board to get Jude back on the straight and narrow. Trouble is that Bennett and Archer have never gotten over each other and Archer also has feelings for Jude. The three of them end up holed up together as they try to get Jude clean. Before too long they work out that they can have a dynamic that works for them all. All 3 of the Replay books take place on the same timeline and I love the way that throughout the book there are reminders and references to events that take place in the previous books. I feel it helps tie the series together. Very highly recommend.
I really didn't know what to expect with BEAT OF THEIR OWN DRUM but I should know by now that even if I'm unsure of the plot, I always love the characters that K.M. Neuhold created. In this case I loved Jude, Archer, and Bennett and I liked the plot so I didn't need to worry. Things start out a bit complicated between these three because Jude doesn't exactly see his worth and he's not interested in getting help while Archer and Bennett are exes who still love each other but struggle with sexual compatibility as two very dominant men who don't like to give in.
I wasn't sure how Neuhold was going to make things work for these three but she did and I loved how things evolved. I especially liked how open everything was between all three and that the consent and the kink exploration and acceptance was all communicated regularly. A Dominant/submissive relationship is completely new for Jude and that need to dominate is what originally tore Archer and Bennett apart. In the 16 years since Bennett has come into himself as a Dom and he finally understands what he needs. At the same time, he sees the good Archer does for Jude and he realizes that all three of them would be perfect together, providing Jude with both the hard and gentle care he needs. These three were super hot and sexy together and while it takes a little longer for Archer to join in the relationship I liked that Neuhold started building the emotional connection between Archer and Jude from the start.
There's a lot of emotion in this read because Jude struggles frequently with feeling like no one accepts or cares about him. He's also been carrying around a lot of guilt over his best friend and bandmate attempted suicide years before. While Jude is almost 10 years younger than both Archer and Bennett, he also feels emotionally younger because he's essentially lived like a spoiled and destructive child since the band first became famous. Jude goes through a lot of growth and he will continue to deal with it when/if the band goes back on tour.
Overall, another enjoyable read by Neuhold and I especially like that this series is happening concurrently as we see each band member find peace and recovery from their past baggage.
Content Warning: References to drug abuse, prostitution, depression, a side character who self-harms, attempted suicide, death of a parent
I'm not a big fan of triangles because I don't believe you could love two persons equally. But this story was believable and left me feeling giddy and happy that such love does exist.
Archer and Bennett have a past that never had a closure. I loved how Archer put his feelings aside in order to help Jude. The dynamics of their relationship was amazing in how they complement each other. I just loved how they managed to work everything out in order for their relationship to survive.
Another MM(M) book who will be put into my favourite reads in 2018.

Kyleen writes amazing MMM but this one was truly fantastic. I loved the previous relationship between Bennett and Archer & the love that didn't die. Jude's story about being rejected by Archer & then losing his virginity to a prostitute because of it, made me gasp & hurt for him. I love Daddy kink that doesn't involve age play and Archer is just the sweetest Daddy. He balances Bennett's dominant side so perfectly. No words can really describe just how much I enjoyed this book. It instantly became one of my favorites.
To my ratings (thanks to amazon I had to change it again and 'upgrade' it a little bit)
5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow- Away-book like 'Liberty' from Seth King, 'Save the kids' series from EM Leya or 'Jesse's Smile' from Angelique Jurd), it's like an A+
4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books) it's like an A
3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in hospitals). I can recommend them definitively! It's like an B+
3* - it's more then a one-time-reader, but not really an often (3-4 times a year) reread book
2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (i wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok) It's like a C-, D
1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the whole line, dismissed, repeat the class
The absolute best book in the series! The others were great also, but this is the best. (ok, i said that from the second book also...). How Jude finds himself needing a strong hand, how Archer loves after all the years Bennett, but also has feelings for Jude. Bennett loves Archer, is attracted to Jude and Jude is confused. How the three men find their way together. It's so great written! I couldn't stop at the lat page, I direct started again to read!!

Beat of Their Own Drum (Replay 3 / KU) by Kyleen Neuhold is live and she NAILED IT! A 5 star read! I have been anxiously waiting for Jude's story and she did NOT disappoint. This MMM book is a fantastic read. It's an incredible thoughtful story and it was SO HOT, yet sweet and tender too. I absolutely LOVED Jude, Archer and Bennett!!! Excellent storyline and excellent writing. There is some light BDSM with a sprinkle of daddy kink. As someone who doesn't really care for daddy kink, Kyleen nailed that too because to me, it is not your typical daddy kink and was perfect for the situation at hand!! I'm extremely picky when it comes to MMM and although I've read a bunch, there aren't that many that I love. Beat of Their Own Drum however, definitely makes it on my MMM love list!!! I also enjoyed how she was able to weave in the other story lines without rehashing too much. This book and series is a must read. I think this could be Kyleen's best book yet!!
Not going to rate this cuz I don’t typically like MMM romance, and I definitely don’t like the type of D/s relationship depicted here and I hate Daddy stuff too. I went into it thinking I was just going to be giving an MMM story a try and pushed through cuz the characters were kinda cute. Not my thing still though, lesson learned.
I read this one out of order because on my kindle, from KU, this is the story in the book called Play it by Ear. Off to read the real book two now ahhaa
Can I just say that I love Archer so much. He's the best band manager. Usually, in stories like this, the band manager is absolute crap. But Archer really is looking after the guys. This has been a really good series. Book 2 is still my favorite I think.
I have no way to express how fantastic this story is! It's a second chance romance in more ways than one. A second chance at love and second chance at life! It's a heat filled, emotional ride that you don't want to get off of! This is a must read and one of my favorite MMM books of the year!
I loved this book it had great characters. And was very well written. I have liked all the authors books. This is definitely one of the top ones though. 🔥
I was so looking forward to this book and it did not disappoint!!! I loved Jude/Archer/Bennett the three worked so well together and I am so ready for Benji's book!!
I started this series with book 3 but now I’m going to read the others. I enjoyed the story of this bad boy drummer, his manager and the man who is hired to keep him in check.
It was even better! Holy hell, this sensitive guy carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. I felt so badly for him. Healing him actually helped two others in the process. Loved it!
I loved it! BDSM and Daddy Kink? Yes please! This book made me ridiculously happy. I’m so glad that Jude got his crap sorted out and Archer got his Hea! I absolutely cannot wait to read Benji’s book and see what happens with the band!
Just finished this and I already want to re-read it! That is how amazing this newest addition to one of my favorite series is. Also Daddy Archer made my heart swoon.
I have be awaiting this book. I have loved the first two books in this series and this one is a triad!
Jude is the very talented drummer for the super star rock band Downward Spiral. But, unfortunately, the band’s name seems to be their destiny if Archer, their manager, can’t get these men to quit self-destructing. Jude has made a name for himself as the band’s bad boy. He has a well publicized taste for hookers and coke. Little does the world, or even his band mates and manager know, it is all self preservation. A little bump of nose candy and a rent boy that won’t get attached numbs him so he can protect himself from the years of hurt for not being good enough.
Archer knows that he has to personally get Jude under control and that means calling the one man that can destroy his heart most, his ex-fiancé. Bennett is known for being “the one to call” to get the rich celebrities back under control. What Archer and Bennett weren’t prepared for was the draw they would feel for the desperate young man. Now they need to figure out is what to do with those feelings and how to get Jude on board.
One of my big problems with this story was the D/s storyline. Yes, I agree that Jude needed structure but what he needed the most was acceptance and love. His “acting out” was a product of his childhood and his non-relationship with his father. However, Bennett’s way of being a Dom was off putting to me. Being a hard-ass ex-military does not make you a Dom! Aftercare is essential after a scene but these weren’t scenes and there was no aftercare by Bennett. I know that the author had Archer fill that role but it was against every basic guideline for a true Dom follow I have ever read. I also felt it pushing the boundaries to have a double penetration so soon with a virgin bottom like Jude. It just didn’t work for me for his “punishment”. Jude running off was all Bennett’s fault. After an experience like he had just gone through he needed his men to surround him with love and support not sit cuddling together on a couch watching a movie and basically ignoring him when he needed them the very most!
What did work for me was the triad itself. But I think that was more for Archer and Bennett’s behalf. They didn’t work together in the first place but adding Jude to the equation worked for all three. I know that they had Jude call Archer Daddy but this wasn’t any kind of daddy kink to me. Archer was the caring and nurturing type so it worked that way but it wasn’t being a “daddy”.
I love this series and was waiting eagerly for this book. Unfortunately, although I liked it, it fell short in several areas for me. I did like that the men all seemed to complete and compliment each other and that their relationship worked. I know that the book is listed at 380 pages however it read much faster than that and felt way shorter.
I am eager to see what happens next with the direction that the band is moving. I was thrilled so far to see that they are changing their lives for the better and are looking out for their own mental health and well-being. They were all so very young and inexperienced when the band was discovered and they were thrust in the limelight, touring and making oodles of money but they were to young to make good choices. They each desperately needed this break after ten long, grueling years of non stop touring and recording or something really bad was on the edge of happening. Something that even Archer couldn’t undo. I am also eager to see what’s up with Benji.
