***spoilers ahead proceed with caution***

I'm sorry, but this unfortunately did not work for me. I'm not even sure why I finished it.

I love a shifter story. One of the aspects that I love is that "mate" storyline. That one person that is made for them that they can not resist. Not only did Hutch resist his mate but he pushed her away, often being cruel. He made her think he was repulsed by her and didn't want her. He thought that because she was human, she wouldn't know they were mates and wouldn't be hurt. Little did he know, she was well aware that they were mates and was crushed and humiliated. He was known for hook ups and she thought he was still doing that, even seeing him coming out of the neighbors house in the morning hours. She did find out that he didn't sleep with the neighbor because he, as the neighbor put it, "wasn't up for the job". The fact remains he went to her house and would have. Not cool for a mate story. Also, the author stated he didn't sleep with other women, but there were a few comments that made me believe otherwise so I guess it's open to interpretation.

There was also the fact that it took their friends getting involved and tricking him into making a move. Fake dates, set up flirtations etc pushed him to stake a claim. If they hadn't intervened, he would have kept treating her that way. She finally got sick of it, the humiliation and having to force his hand, and she surrendered and told him she was done. And guess what, NOW he wanted her and he set out to win her back during the last few pages of the book. He did this all because he had so much responsibility that he thought having a mate would put more on his plate.

Then it just ended. So disappointing. No look into the future. NOTHING!

JUST NOT FOR ME!

I don't happen to enjoy shifter books like this.
I would rather the hero and heroine wait for their mates and if that's not possible, then at least when they find their mate, they are all about pleasing their mate.

No ambiguity about faithfulness or doubts!

A stubborn shifter....rejects his nerdy mate!?

Ever since I read the blurb for Hutch's story I knew he would have a ton of groveling to do if I were to enjoy his story. Hutch has known that Veronica was his mate since they first met a year ago, and he has been avoiding her for just as long. He didn't want to be mated to the nerdy librarian in town and be shackled with the sense of responsibility that comes with finding your other half, so he avoids her at all costs.

After their disastrous first meeting, Veronica makes it her mission to disappear whenever Hutch is around as she is humiliated and hurt by the fact that her one true mate rejected her. But after meeting Allie and Georgia, Veronica decides to break out if her shell and not live her life for Hutch...which is exactly when Hutch takes notice. I loved when Veronica stood up for herself and didn't take Hutch's crap; seeing him flounder in jealousy was glorious. In my opinion, Hutch still has some groveling to do, but overall their story was cute, angsty and unexpectedly kinky.

My Hutch, the hot but tortured asshole...

I saw the cover, the 18+ warning, and a rejected mate scenario and got excited. Unfortunately, I was looking for serious, and this is not. I know the dialogue is supposed to be humorous, but is comes across as immature to me... maybe my sense of humor sucks, so I’ll leave a little text to give you an idea.

I flipped him the bird because, well, because to heck and back with him. Virgin Veronica was gone.

Jealousy bit at me like a rabid pack of Chihuahuas, slightly painful and annoying as fuck.

You… fudge nugget!” “Fudge nugget? Fudge nugget?

“He’s a rackafrazzin shizbooger.”

I should’ve locked the door behind me, gul durnit.

you big… butt face. You’re a fartknocker and I don’t want to have to look….

This is somewhere between 2 and 3. I needed specific clarification on some things and some more grovel from Hutch.
I liked the heroine as she finally had enough and walked away BUT I feel she took him back to easily. I wish she would have stuck to her guns longer and really made him feel the pain of being rejected. She felt that pain for a year and he only had to feel it for a few days. Plus I wish his friends would have kicked his ass some more.
For what it's worth though this book did peak my interest in the ones hat came before t and those that will come next. I especially want to read Hutches brothers book.

OTT dog in the manger manwhore gets the virgin
He rejected her because.....wait for it....he didn't want to give up dating because that's the "only fun" he has in his life. Never mind his buddies.
BUT of course she can't have a life.
Now it was not clear if he was celibate during this one year of rejection period or not.
Because nobody explicitly asked that question.
Heroine saw him sneaking out of OW's house one morning except this one confirmed that he had led her on but just didn't really have any chemistry so they didn't have sex and he requested her to let him sleep at her couch because he didn't want to be alone.
There are strong indications that he may not have been able to ACTUALLY keep on dating like he wanted to as his equipment was rather non cooperative however he did keep trying to date while she suffered a mental trauma of rejection.
So I didn't finish the book to figure out what happened what didn't. Based on how far I read, contents get 1 star.
I read these shifter stories for commitment at least, I'm not even going to blabber on about how perfect Zoe's bears are with OTHER qualities as well, but this one failed to deliver that ONE thing.
This guy rejected his mate because he didn't like the idea of giving up HIS manwhore ways and didn't really change his decision until she publicly displayed she can be competent to his exciting sexual lifestyle. So to me he didn't actually even have a reason. And if she was still the shy woman he'd still have rejected her and felt it was justified. He pretty much said it.
He said " I didn’t know it would be like this"
"Life with you would be a lot of fun. Sexy, wild, hilarious, and always exciting."
Not because she's a shy librarian but she has proven over and over that she IS all of the above.
I have no patience for dog in the manger manwhores.

I didn't hate Hutch, but I wasn't too impressed with him either.
Veronica is a human librarian, and when she bumped into Hutch a year ago, he didn't think she would know that they were mates. He knew. And he didn't want the responsibility.
But Veronica did know, and his cold put down when she kissed him crushed her spirit.
All she ever wanted was a place to belong and a love of her own.

But then the mates from previous books decide to help her out. So a makeover and a date with another man push Hutch into realizing that she is not a woman he can ignore. It also makes him realize that his assumptions have made an asshole out of him. He has hurt his mate and must make up for that.

So the set up was good and I liked how people shit on him after they found out what he'd done (ignored his mate for a year). But I was disappointed that Veronica seemed to have more balls than him. He grovels but was still a little too wishy washy.
The ending was a little abrupt.

I had the typical problems with this book -- h is virgin, H is not; he is architect of her suffering; he's a pouty baby; her intact hymen indicates that she is immature and gawky and lives via sexy romance novels, etc.

But here's the real problem: the H and the h are a complete mismatch. They don't complement each other -- this was entirely about the sex/mate bond, and that's it. He is a tiresome baby and she is a ninny, although now that she doesn't have a hymen presumably she can start acting like an adult again.

Not as good it seemed so repetitive. Him pushing her away and her desperately doing anything to get his attention. I just starting skimming.

Hell no. She knows he is her mate and he rejects her for a year, he is SO CRUEL to her. Just his words were unforgivable. And then he goes home with another woman. Don’t worry-no shmex because is man parts didn’t work for anyone else anymore. But he WANTED to screw someone else who lived across the street from the mate he didn’t want. She saw him leaving this woman’s house. What does he do? Doesn’t break eye contact with the h as he leaves. This is not a hero. And SHE is still chasing this man who doesn’t want her. Why doesn’t he want her? Because she is just a plain, boring librarian.
AFTER he walks out on her after almost shmexing her -he won’t screw a virgin God forbid. Also she’s a virgin and he’s a former man ho. Authors-quit with this crap! Anyway, AFTER he does this she still cries to her friends and the come up with a plan for her to get him to want her. No woman should have to make a man want her. If he’s doesn’t then eff him. And for a MATE to not want her? He’s a POS. I DNF at 54% because I knew nothing he did could redeem him.

With this book my venture into the "Bears of Burden" will end.In a really long time had no book made me feel so disgusted with romance and characters.Lets brake it down.
1.I never had and never will accept the man treating his destined love interested as a piece of shit.To knowingly and with purpose hurting, humiliating, rejecting and repressing a love interest, kills all and any chance I had to feel for the couple.I don't care what reasons a character have or what his history is to have made him do it.It is choice the character made and that alone describes him for who he truly is.His reasons are just excuses and are no valid ground for forgiveness.Hutch should rot alone and in pain for the rest of his life.
2.Heroine have zero self respect. Author tried and failed to portray her as a strong woman, yet she constantly reverts back to being a coward and acts like a dirty dish rag the Hutch made her.To beg and/or trick the man ,who have hurted you for so long, into noticing you is the lowest a woman can go.It is not sexy, not witty, smart or any other positive word ,that someone might want to ascribe to it.It is the lowest point of self-respect and I hated absolutely every page of it.
3.Allie and Georgy ,from first to books in series, were portrayed as more stupid and air headed than in their own books.Characted degrading does not earn any points in my book.
4.Change of heart. There was no buildup for it.MCs do things that they validate with whatever stupid reasoning author mustered up for them and all it does is degrade the characters mentally more that the events in book .
5.The book is just one big eye roll worth.Romance is ridiculous, relationships are ridiculous, even the climax was MEH.
6.I had a second of respect for heroine at the jail scene. But then I lost it on the next page. How can i like characters when i can't even respect them a little?
7.With all the bullshit going on in the book,it wasn't even good enough to rise an anger in me.And this reason here is why i gave it only one star.If book can't rise any emotion at all-not anger or pity, not excitement or even tiny interest in sex scenes and not even any strong negative emotion, that is the biggest problem i have with books.I could have forgiven half the shit if author had managed to at least make me feel strong anger.Or any other feeling. If not strong, then at least something. But nada, none.

Obviously, I do not and will not recommend anyone to read it.The best i can do is advise to skip this book and jump straight to next one in series.Hopefully it is better.I will never know though as this book killed any chance of me even giving a try .

Not as horrible as I thought it would be. Yes hutch was acted like a huge bag of dicks multiple times... I especially liked the h's tenacity to keep going with her life no matter how devastated she was. She also didn't forgive him right away. There was a little bit of grovel. Not a lot but you could definitely feel H's sincerity in trying to make everything right. It was horrible that he made he think he was with others during that year but the main thing is that he wasn't...that makes it safe for me.

It feels unfinished

I've read three books in this series and they all feel unfinished. I mean yeah, they have a HEA but it feels unfinished, like this book ends, the next begins, and there's a whole bunch of stuff in between the two that happened and should have been included in the books. This one for example, they finally get together, he tells her he loves her - the end. Literally. We don't even get a tiny glimpse of their life together. I liked the premise of this story although I hated the whole playing games part. I do think that so far, Hutch is my favorite of the guys. The books are super short and that's not a bad thing, but they could be that much better with an epilogue showing their life as a couple. I'm sure I'll finish reading the series.

Ok, so I believe this is the first time I've given a series' books a five-star rating back-to-back-to-back. This book was different from the first two, especially since Hutch was kind of an ass (a very sexy grumpy ass). The heartbreak that Veronica feels is a little hard to read, but she pulls through with the help of Allie and of course my girl Georgia! Eventually it all ends well, but I loved reading their journey to get to their HEA. Now I have to wait for the next in the series...will it be about Sam, Sterling, or maybe even the local vet??? Anyone have any ideas??? In the meantime I'm going to check out some of Candace's other titles. I think I've found another new favorite author!!!! "Let your freak flag fly!!!"

I loved it for a short shifter romance it even made me laugh at times, hence the 5 stars . Hutch is a bear shifter and as the author describes an asshole. Veronica a human even knew Hutch was her mate but when she kissed him he acted horrified, so embarrassed she hides from him and basically becomes the stereotypical of a librarian, that's until she's had enough of watching him run around with other woman and she turns herself into a sex kitten and with her friends shows him just what he's missing. I won't tell you any more as I would hate to give away too much of the story and spoil it for other readers.

The story is decent enough, I didn't hate it but what I don't appreciate is the formatting of this book. The font is huge and the volume of the book is bulked up with all these sneak peeks and excepts from the author's other books. The actual story itself takes up less than 20% and the rest are all padded up. Needless to say I skipped all those sneak peeks because it irritates me whenever an author does that (bulking up the volume by adding unnecessary sneak peeks). I'm just glad this is on KU and I didn't have to buy the book. I would felt that I've been cheated.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. I recommend this series to anyone who loves PNR. This series has just swept me away. I loved this story, especially Ronnie's transformation. Ronnie is a shy librarian. Hutch is a very serious small business owner/mechanic with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He does not need any more responsibility certainly not the responsibility of a mate. I can't wait for more!

Wow! I loved everything about this story. Bookish virgin librarian Veronica has way with cheesy insults and an obsession with erotic novels. Brutish, hulking bear shifter Hutch is in total denial that Veronica is his true mate. With the assistance of her meddling friends will they finally get over themselves and accept each other? This book is laugh out loud funny and steamy at the same time. Ya gotta read this one!!!

This had one of my guilty-not-so-guilty pleasures: rejected mates. I love me that angst that comes along with that. I liked that Ronnie was still sexual and not completely clueless about sex. I liked the way she described it in the book, something like, “I’m sexual, just not with anyone else. It just hasn’t happened yet.” Of course it’s possible and completely okay to be a virgin and not know much about sex, but it’s also such a stereotype that a lot of romance authors seem to use when they’re going for the shy, sheltered, gorgeous-but-she-doesn’t-know-it heroine. Y’all, it’s VERY much possible to be a virgin and know a lot about sex.

Howeeeever, one thing I didn’t like was all the talk about intact hymens. Even if you’ve never had penetrative sex, it’s completely common and normal for girls/women to tear their hymen when they’re young through physical activities having nothing to do with sex! It’s just a piece of tissue down there, nothing more. I didn’t like that the talk about hymens perpetuated the horribly antiquated notion that nonintact hymen = not virgin. Reminded me too much of those horrible and disgusting “virgin tests” that used to be done on women. 🤮

Also, Hutch didn’t suffer nearly long enough!! This could be due to the length of the book aka not very long. I wish he’d truly seen just how she might get on without him. I wish we saw her start to move on from him, see how he’d react to that. Of course she’d still secretly pine for him deep down, but hey, if he can go around with other women in hopes of forgetting her then she sure as hell can do the same with men!

Bears of Burden #3
Hutch and Veronica (Ronnie)
Rejected Mate; Big, Rough Bear; Shy, Meek Librarian

I loved the first book, so I had high hopes for this series and bought the rest. But as I keep reading farther, I keep finding things that I really don’t care for.
I have a real dislike for cheating. Even the appearance of cheating. Even after these guys find their mates, they tend to push them away and it’s teased that they are looking for and even having unsatisfying relations with other women. That’s a big no thank you for me.
Hutch has known Veronica was his mate from the first moment he literally bumped into her. Over a year ago. But he pushes her away and claims he doesn’t have room in his life for one more responsibility. Not even a mate.
Veronica knows about the shifters in town. Lots of reading has given her an insight into what to expect. She knows Hutch is her mate. She also knows that he’s disgusted by her, and has rejected her. So for the last year she’s hidden herself away in her library. Living a very small, sad life.
I just didn’t get these two. I saw no chemistry, nothing between the two of them. If not for the mates of Hutch’s buddies, they might never come together. They gave her a makeover and literally paraded her in front of Hutch. And he still walked away. It wasn’t until the last 10% of the book, when she’s had enough and finally rejects him, does he understand the pain he’s put on her. And he can’t stand being apart any longer. It made no sense to me.
Very short story, very light on details. Not really for me.

This is the first book I've read in this series. Normally I like to start at the beginning, however I stumbled on this book, and it had such angry reviews... I had to try it.

Hutch,, is a jerk. Seriously. When you open a "fated mate" book, there's usually some typical tropes that you can expect. Throw those out here. Hutch rejects his mate. For a year. He has casual hookups with other women, he is mean to his mate should he happen upon her. And as much as the author tries to soften his position up with talk of him worrying he's not good enough, he also openly admits that he assumes because she likes to read, that she's boring and nerdy.

So Hutch sucks. What saves this book, is Ronnie. She's great. I loved that she puts herself out there, being crazy one second and shy the next. I felt all of her upset and pain, constantly bumping into the man she knows is meant for her. All in all, surprising good read.

An Awesome Read!!

I loved reading HUTCH (Bears of Burden Book 3). All about Hutch Mallory a bear shifter and the owner of the garage in town and Veronica Maddox is the Librarian and his mate. The author wrote a story about a man/bear who is over burdened with responsibility and has no time to live his life! Read about Hutch & Veronica and see how their rocky start just might be there forever end! I’ve read the first two books in this series, and I honestly can say I can’t stop reading them. They are funny, and engaging, they will make you mad and happy and their loving is off the charts!! So if you like a story that captures your attention on page one and continues captivating you till the end, this is the series for you!! Who knew bear shifters could be so hot and lovable!!

This one was a blast. Hutch is exactly the kind of stubborn, grumpy bear who digs himself into a hole and then has no idea how to climb out of it. Watching him struggle with the consequences of his earlier choices—especially as Veronica comes into her own—was equal parts frustrating and deeply satisfying.

Veronica’s transformation was a highlight. She doesn’t just become “bold” for the sake of the plot—her growth feels earned, and her confidence shift is honestly empowering. Hutch, for all his broody nonsense, clearly never stopped watching her, and that push-pull dynamic had some great tension.

It’s a redemption arc with humor, heat, and just the right amount of small-town chaos. A classic case of “too little, too late”—until it’s not. Hutch had to work for it, and I loved that Veronica made him.

No More Hiding!

That’s what she decided; no more hiding from Hutch. Veronica aka Ronnie aka V, is the town librarian & she’s been hiding in the background from Hutch ever since they almost collided with each other. She knows that he’s her mate.

Hutch, the town’s work alcoholic, as he’s constantly (not in this book however) working to provide for his mother & brother since his father died when he was 14. Hutch thinks that he doesn’t have anything to offer a mate & has been ignoring Veronica since he met her.

Now is the time to stop avoiding each other in this book; but, you’ll have to read this book to find out how they made out.

I liked the first book..

I liked Thorn's book and had high hopes for this one. But it reads like you start in the middle of their story. So much has happened between them before, but I don't see how it was addressed in book 2 if the narrator's are the main characters of the book. Plus if he's so hung up on her, why go home with her neighbor and have her see you walk out the next morning? I gathered he has performance issues, so why stay all night? Neither of them were likable and made me want to root for them since we don't get to follow their story. We are just told this or that happened so that's why I'm doing this.

Hutch is a big, motorcycle mechanic with lots of issues. Veronica is the local librarian who has a kinky side. She finds her mate Hutch but he spurns her out of mistaken expectations/assumptions. Sole support of his family since he was fourteen Hutch is frightened to take on a mate. Allie and Georgia to the rescue. The gals push Hutch into declaring he wants, needs and above all is sorry for his actions. Ronnie becomes a kinky source of information and naughty books for the females of Burden. Great addition to the series. I read this book using my KU subscription.

He rejected his mate for over a year not knowing the hurt he caused her. Until after a new haircut and cloths did Veronica come out of her hidden shell to torment her shifter mate. Low and behold Hutch responses to the wild librarian, but the damage is to late for him. He know Ronnie was his but that didn’t stop him from refusing her, pushing her away, hate her and then the worse for Ronnie, he slept with the women in town even knowing they were fated mated.
