Unsung Veil #1

A Call to Pride

Rate this book

Liza Moultrie has been on the run from her past for over a year, trying to make sense of the events surrounding the attack that brought her life to a screeching halt. Life in Helen, Georgia has been kind to her and the friendships she found there have made the healing process a little easier, if painstakingly slow. Unable to distinguish nightmares from memories, she turns to the two guys who stomped into her life with without warning.

Parker and Kade James have secrets of their own, and apparently they’re bad at keeping them. Helen was supposed to be one more stop on the road, one more pay cheque. That was until they met their mate. Their mate. Two brothers, one seemingly human girl, and they’re both drawn to her. When Liza’s past catches up to her, can the brothers keep her safe? Can she let them in and accept her place as their mate?

With danger stalking her, literally, throughout the town she has come to think of as her refuge, Liza has only one choice: Trust them.

Quick, fun, sexy, shifter read! Loved Liza and her boys. Love me a dangerous and sexy alpha :)

And loved the mystery of what Liza is ... sure did not guess that right!!

Can't wait to see where Poppy Woods takes this. Medium-fast burn, plenty of steam.

Fun!

This book was strangely cute, even though there really was NOTHING cute about it. No, with lions, panthers, wolfs and bears, not to mention a hefty dose of well deserved PTSD, a deranged stalker and inhuman powers.... there really is nothing cute. Yet, it was still cute - or perhaps sweet. An almost feral lion brought back from the brink by the generous love of a sumptuous woman, an alpha panther struggling to hold it together and the girl who’s just trying to find where she belongs. THOSE elements make this sweet while the twist at the end make it a series.

First person, multiple POV, MMF

Pros:
- Clips along and drags you with it in the best possible way.
- Intriguing world building.
- Jenny.... I rather liked her.
- Other male characters NOT part of a harem.
- Humorous at times.

Cons:
- The twist, while fascinating, left me with a mild sense of distaste. Hoping book 2 can dispel that.

Oh that ending. So did not expect that. I really enjoyed reading this story. Loved the characters. Book was very well written. Kept me captivated from start to finish. Only thing I would change is not having to wait till the end of the story to find out what Liza was and that darn cliffhanger. But wow it was such a good story. Can't wait to see how it plays out in next book.

Another debut novel from a new author. This one has an ending that actually surprised me. That does not happen often.
I enjoyed the characters immensely, and look forward to watching Poppy grow as an author.

I Wish I Could Give More Than Five Measly Stars Because This Book Deserves So Many More!!!

Sorry no spoilers of any kind included!
This book omg this book was freaking AWESOME!
I tried to read it slowly and savor it but it refused to let me!
It sucked me in halfway through the first chapter and I could not climb out until I had got to the end of the story.
There’s so much action and some steam and very addicting MCs whom all are definitely the perfect blends of vulnerable and kick butt!
For Poppy Woods’s first book she did a absolutely amazing job at weaving her story so much that I definitely am looking forward to the next book in this series.
So if you are looking for my advice, well my advice would be get this book and then strap yourself down and get ready for a whirlwind of a roller coaster ride because you’re gonna get a constant fantastic rush all throughout this story!

I received an ARC copy of this book.

I'm not sure why, but when I first heard of this book, I assumed it was a reverse harem/why choose novel.
However, it is only a menage.
That's not to say I didn't like it, I think I was just a little saddened to only see her with two guys.
I kept hoping for more to spring up for her to claim (or the two others she was in proximity to at least).
But that's a my bad because it does state in the blurb that it is a paranormal menage romance (I should really get better about reading those blurbs).

Like I said, I heard about this book several months ago.
Probably when she first revealed the cover.
And I was super ecstatic about it.
I instantly added it to my TBR list and checked back with Amazon repeatedly to make sure I hadn't missed the release date.
Receiving an ARC of this story was a highlight of my day (I'm not kidding I was super excited when I saw the email with this and I read it immediately and without stopping).

First things first, trigger warning.
There is one in the blurb, but I always like to reiterate that in my reviews just in case some people are out there like me and don't read the blurbs, but will read a few reviews before starting a book (though I don't really read many reviews beforehand either-I'm more of an after person to see how other people's opinions line up with mine).
This story deals with sexual abuse, stalking, death, and violence.
There is also some intimate scenes, but nothing hard core-unless you think double timing is a bad thing.

I'm not going to lie, when I first started reading this I was kind of confused.
The story starts off in a dream state and talks about a horrific event that happened to Liza that caused her to run from her home and basically become a hermit.
She has made a couple of friends, but hasn't opened up to them about why she has moved to their small town.
You don't learn the significance about her nightmares until she finally opens up to her female friend.
When she meets Hottie McHotface (Kade James) she is instantly attracted to him (something that hasn't happened in a long time) but at the end of the night she feels like she makes a fool of herself due to a panic attack.
But when she runs into him several more times, along with his brother Parker-who she also feels extremely attracted to-their relationship builds and proves to be something far more than Liza ever realized.

The characters are amazing in this story.
It's told from multiple POV's-three to be exact.
And I love how she did the chapter headers to signify this.
Instead of using the name of the character (like most authors do when writing in multiple POV's), she uses pictures of the characters (the ones of the cover).
It was so fun seeing that.
And I loved seeing everything from the other's POV.
I think Kade is my favorite-but I always go for the bad boy, grumpy one in storylines.
They are my vice.

There was very little I found wrong with this.
One minor issue that is more of how something reads than a blatant problem.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait to see what else these characters hold in store for us.

Oh! One more thing.
This book ends on a cliffhanger-believe me I had some words with Poppy about it (love you girl!).
And it takes a twist I did NOT see coming whatsoever.

I highly recommend picking up this book.
It's a great debut novel from Poppy and I can't wait to see what else she has in the works.

The first half was 4 stars, the second half more like 3 stars, so going to.go.with 3.5.

This was a mixed bag, for me. On the one hand I liked Liza and sympathised with the way she was trying to piece her life back together. There was going of chemistry between her, Kade and Parker, although much more with Kade, for me.

It's hard to say a lot without spoilers, but I sort of wish the romance had been a bit more of a slow burn, with more build up and anticipation, as it all felt a bit rushed and I lost interest a bit in the last third. I also feel like after what she had gone through it might hav taken her longer to trust or be intimate with them, as well.

I will be reading book 2, though!

I picked up this book as a recommendation from one of my favourite authors, and I enjoyed it just as promised. I devoured it in few hours, in one go. This debut author did a great job weaving her story of supernatural creatures, with a fresh approach, great plot, and lovable characters.
Liza is running and hiding from the traumatic events from her past, as she finally settles in a charming small town, where she works as a waitress. She makes friends, and apart from occasional nightmares and flashbacks, she is finally settling down.
However, unresolved past somehow has a way of catching up, and in combination with several inexplicable events, and new love interests, Liza's life becomes crazy hectic and a lot more interesting than she would like. Her inner conflict between fear and anger is a beauty to watch, in a sense that anger always wins and converts her into this brave, fearless firecracker. Although Liza has some trust issues, they don't impede her ability to love, be loyal, or lose her self-respect. She knows what she wants, and she knows what she doesn't want, and there is no compromise. She is also reasonable and does not hold a grudge against people closest to her. She is overall a great lovable character.
There are a lot of emotions is this book, positive, negative, and everything in between. This story is not all about love and happy ending, there is a lot of unpleasantness as well. The author did an amazing job tackling some heavy topics relating to consent. I felt it deep in my chest. Then there is hot and steamy content, very well done. Other characters are really well done as well. Obviously, some are more lovable than others, but all are well developed and firmly placed in the story.
This is a great debut and I can't wait for the next book in the series. And I can't be happier to add another great new author to my list of favourites.

This book was really great! It had magic, romance, and it had action. The female main character is struggling to heal from an event in her past and finds some wonderful friends along the way. She meets our hunky male main characters and hijinks ensue. Then, her past comes back to haunt her and she has to figure out how to deal with a new problem.

I love that the shifters are not all just wolves or bears. I feel like they are the default shifters. In A Call to Pride, there are lions and panthers which is different and I dig it.

I like that there are magical creatures that are just hinted or introduced towards the end, which leaves a lot of room for the story and the world to be expanded. There's a lot of places Poppy can go with the story which is really cool and I'm excited to see where this new world and these characters lead us.

The story does end in what some would say a cliffhanger, I feel like the present problem has sort of been resolved for the moment. I feel it's more like a pause before beginning a large climb uphill. But ya know, Miss Poppy, they can't be sitting under this tree taking a breather for too long, let's get their happy butts up that hill!

Thank you Poppy for sharing your characters and your world with us.

Liza finds herself in a small town running from her past after an attack that left with terrifying nightmares. She finds herself working as a bartender and making friends with her boss and a local business owner who both become like best friends to her, while helping her heal from her past. Then step in Parker and Kade James who are mysterious and who have secrets of their own. Both of them are drawn to Liza and they find themselves falling fast for this seemingly normal human. Until Liza’s past catches up to her and they find themselves trying to protect her while earning her trust and love for not one of them but both of them!

This book was an amazing read and I wasn’t able to put it down until I reached the last word. If you love fierce strong women, yummy men, danger, and the supernatural then this book is for you! So many emotions you seem to develop for each character, that you feel like you know them personally. This author did an amazing job putting together an amazing book that you can truly enjoy!

A Call to Pride is Poppy Woods debut book, the first book in the Unsung Veil series, and she didn’t disappoint. It was amazing! Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. Liza our main character is running from a traumatic event that still haunts her dreams. She has settled down in the town of Helen, has a great job as a bartender and new friends; Until she meets brothers Parker and Kade. Parker and Kade are only in town for a few weeks on a job for the pack, but something draws them to Liza that they can’t control. As Liza’s past catches up to her Liza is forced to confront her past and what she is with the help of the brothers and her friends: a witch, a bear shifter, panther shifters and my favorite a black lion shifter. This book is well written, fast paced, full of chemistry and entertaining. I can’t wait to read book two and see what’s next for the Liza and the cats!

We meet Liza in a small town working in a bar serving drinks with a side of sass, free of charge. With a rough around the edges boss that you can’t help but love, and a best friend who runs an antique/souvenir shop, Liza’s life is full of wonderful characters. Now let’s talk about why you really came to this lovely book, the men. Two shifter brothers and their cousins are in town working a job. By accident they happen upon Liza while she’s working, and without giving anything away, shenanigans! The shenanigans are humorous, sexy, heart-wrenching and most definitely leave you wanting more.
Now, Liza has been having nightmares. Not the kind of nightmares that you wake up with going, “Wow, that sucked”, or the one’s that startle you awake. These nightmares are the wake you from the dead of night, heart-pounding, covered in sweat, can’t go back to sleep kind. What we don’t know is why? What is she running from? What happened to her to cause nightmares such as these? What caused her to hide out in a small town?
This is a fast-paced, engaging book that will make you want to race through the pages and then whine a little that it’s over. Poppy Woods’ debut book is funny, witty, heart-pounding, and smile-inducing. I cannot wait for book 2! Fingers crossed it comes out soon!

Great beginning

It's going to be hard to explain what I like so much about this book without saying to much. Lisa has been on the run for a year and has a lot of emotional trauma that she's dealing with and not always very well. The author has done a great job of creating a character who is dealing with trauma but also still a strong woman that's learning to accept help from the people around her. This is a fine line and I felt like the author kept true to this characters reactions and trauma through out the story without losing the plot in the process. I did enjoy the story and I can't wait for more, this does end on a slight cliff hanger but I didnt find it annoying at all. I really hope her next books gives us a little more info on this paranormal world that's the only thing I found a little lacking. I imagine since it's the first book that we will learn along with the main character and right now she knows next to nothing. Everything considered I would definitely recommend this book.

Now that’s how you do a big reveal! 😉

This was fun. It was fast paced and had characters that pushed the story forward. I liked a majority of the protagonists, however Jenny just came off as insipid and a useless in a pinch. But Liza’s other friends, Denise and Brett, were stand up people.

So, while I was enjoying the story, it bugged me that there was no progression in finding out what Liza was. Then we came to the end, a big fight, and the revelation I had been waiting for - and I was very surprised by what was revealed. What was a 3.25 book ended up being almost a four star read. Definitely checking out the next book.

What. The. Freak. GAH! This is my first book by Poppy Woods and now I’ll likely be up until the wee morning hours reading the next book in this series because A Call to Pride was AMAZING.

I’ve had this book on my kindle for forever now and I’m honestly kicking myself for not reading it sooner! I mean for reals oversized growly kitty cats, how can one not fall head over heels in love? Top it off with the fact they’re literal alpha males and y’all I’m freaking swooning! *fans self* I have way more to say about this book but honestly you’ll just have to read it yourself. I’m done spending time I could be using to read book two on a review for y’all haha!

What I liked about this book was the opening chapter. It was intriguing and definitely catches my attention to read more. It told the story of Liza, who has a very traumatic past that she was running away from. She ended up in a remote town, unknowingly befriended supernaturals, and met brothers Kade and Parker who has secrets of their own. She has no clue that supernaturals exist, that she is even one of them, until her past came back to claim her.

A Call To Pride is an engaging story. I liked the FMC’s sassiness and her strong will to fight her inner demons alone is very admirable. The story centers on lions/ panthers shifters which I liked because almost every book I’ve read are wolf shifter based. We were also introduced to other supernaturals in this book and I would love to see more of that in the next one. The story was told in multiple POV which I loved because it helped me connect with the characters more. It was a fast paced, action packed and steamy hot read. I'm hoping to see more of the characters backstory on the second installment.

I received an ARC and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book. The cover drew my attention but the words are what captivated me. Liza is an amazing woman with a strength in her that draws you in. The supporting characters are all fun and unique and add to the story rather than distracting you from the main characters. Parker and Kade are just plain fun and will have their hands full with Liza but it is easy to see they were made for eachother. I cannot wait to see where book 2 will take us. It is sure to be one heck of a ride!

Wow

Ok so, I was a bit skeptical going into the first few chapters. It seemed the progression from surviving assault and the lingering ptsd to the carnal lust was a bit fast.
The progression is usually quick in these, non-epic length, books and once you realize that it’s a claiming, the progression makes sense. The ending, at first, seemed to be a great cliffhanger, till the cliffhanger changed and left me not only wanting more, but hating the months I’ll have to wait for the next book.

I throughly enjoyed this book from the beginning. You never really know what you're getting yourself into for a debut novel, but I promise you this one will not disappoint. I absolutely love the writing style, so sassy! I absolutely loved all of the characters, they were all developed very well. I enjoyed not being able to figure out the ending and I want to read more of the story, but I'm torn on what Liza ends up being, not all what I expected and maybe not one I can understand right now. I'll have to read the next one to see if I can wrap my head around it a little more, this is the only reason why not a 5 star review, every other bit of the story is fabulous!

Woods writes an engaging story that draws you in from the first page. I really liked Liza, she has been sort of in hiding since she had a traumatic incident. She has flashbacks, but she keeps going and is fierce. Parker and Kade are yummy and I adore their cousins too. I can’t wait to see where this series goes :)
