Anne-Marie likes a drink and her anti-social behaviour is causing problems in her neighbourhood. One day Anne-Marie is found dead and everyone wonders who killed Anne-Marie.

This book is a mystery set somewhere in Britain. The author is careful not to reveal any locations, everywhere is generic, the city, the street, the park, the shops etc. This is a shame as the whole book is so obviously British, she could have had so much extra added value by using real locations.

Character development is very good. By the end of the novel you really get to know Anne-Marie and her husband Daniel. It is a shame about the book’s title because you know before you start reading that Anne-Marie will not make it to the end. But slowly the story develops and we learn how Anne-Marie and Daniel have been living and what sort of marriage they hold. Then when Anne-Marie dies, the mystery deepens until all is revealed very near the end.

I liked how C.M. Thompson explored the dynamics of marriage and how couples cope with the pet hates of their partners. I liked how she dealt with the problems that can be caused by alcoholics. I liked how she featured the love that can be shared within a relationship when partners are strongly aware of each others bad points.

I liked how her husband and wife appeared very real. They are not glamorous but refreshingly ordinary. It niggles me when female characters are beauty queens and faultless in their appearance and actions. Anne-Marie is your normal, ordinary, heavy drinker and it made me smile when I got to the part…

Anne-Marie has been wearing the same faded grey pyjamas since Tuesday; not last Tuesday or the Tuesday before, but over a month ago last Tuesday. She is barely wearing them anyway: she has lost so much weight, they hang loosely off her scraggly frame. She is vaguely aware that she smells. She knows her hair is in dire need of a wash and she has split ends on her split ends but she just can’t bring herself to give a flying fuck.

...Anne-Marie is not a celebrity model, she is dirty, scruffy and smelly! And her poor husband Daniel tries his best and when I got to this bit, I understood his plight and had great sympathy for him…

If he tried to watch TV, she would be there endlessly asking questions; if he tried to involve her, she would want alone time. If he cooked, she wasn’t hungry. If he ordered in food, then she was sick of take-aways. If something was left lying around, it wasn’t anything to do with her. If he tidied something away, she was using that, THANK you. Everything he did or said was wrong. Then he made the mistake of having a beer. He just wanted to turn off a little, it had been a hard day at work and he was very tired. He had tried to do it in secret but she had caught him. You would have thought he was hiding the crown jewels from her, the way she started. Then she wanted one. Just one.

...So Anne-Marie and Daniel bumbled along in their marriage enjoying many hours of drinking, over-eating and watching television. The three things we have shared in our marriage over the last 27 years!

I enjoyed reading Who Killed Anne-Marie? and I thought it was a GOOD mystery. There were plenty of suspects but the focus was on how Daniel was getting on and being a husband, it felt very easy to stand in his shoes as the pages swept by. I found this book a GOOD read, so it gets 4 stars from me.

The reader already from the title and the synopsis of this twisty, enthralling thriller that Anne Marie Mills is dead. She was a violent, abusive alcoholic who wasn't exactly the most popular resident on the cul de sac where she lived with her long suffering husband Daniel but how did she die? Was it an accident? Suicide? Did one of the neighbours finally have enough of her constant drunken rants? Or maybe Daniel finally couldn't take anymore? Could it possibly have been a burglary gone wrong or is there a serial killer stalking their quite neighbourhood.

The story is voiced by numerous believable characters, sometimes the main character voice changed more than once during the long chapters but at no time did I struggle to follow the story. Many of the vivid characters were not very likeable,I especially didn't like Sherri (Anne Marie's Mum) I really liked the two detectives who were investigating Anne Marie's case DCI Sam Colvin and DCI Nicolas Grimm (Was the author a,fan of the Grimm tv show by any chance?) I really liked the banter and camaraderie between them. As the story unfolded I felt loads of empathy for Daniel as he was put through hell by various untrustworthy characters. But was my empathy for him misplaced, had I been manipulated by a clever author into liking a character who was really a cold blooded killer?

This is a gripping tale of addiction, depression, secrets, misconceptions, manipulation,
obsession and lies that keeps the reader guessing until the truth of what happened to Anne Marie is revealed towards the end of the book. This is the first book that I have read by this author and I would happily read more of her books in the future especially if they featured DCI's Colvin and Grimm.

Plodding and repetetive

Found this book dull, plodding and unbelievable story . Centres round the death of Ann Marie who had a serious drink problem, married to Daniel and an interfering mother and brother. They live in a cul de sac where every house seems to be inhabited by someone odd. The was she pushed did she jump scenario is dragged out and it feels as though you're constantly reading the same paragraph.
Boringingly written unsympathetic characters couldn't empathise or recognise anyone in it. Read to the end but wish I hadn't bothered. Would not recommend.

Really enjoyed this different book. It's written from an unusual perspective, which I found appealing from the beginning. The protagonist is a horrible, abusive drunk so you are not sad that she is killed but working out who did it is more difficult than you expect!

Interesting book!

This book was peppered with salty language, but in spite of that, it kept my undivided attention. The characters were realistic as was the plot. I would recommend it to other mystery readers with a warning about the bad language.

Thrills right the end!

A well written who done it. One that keeps you guessing one character after another as the one who killed Anne Marie!

Not much of a mystery murder mystery.

Rating chosen because the book, to me, seems rather hastily thrown together. LOTS of typos, skipped words, other sloppy editing errors.

Everyone knows that alcohol kills, but is this the only thing that kills?

Trigger warnings: Alcohol Abuse, Binge Eating

Who Killed Anne-Marie follows a broken marriage destroyed by endless failed opportunities to make it right, an alcohol addiction that has gone too far and the misconception that hatred has completely taken over. This depicts the struggles of dealing with alcohol abuse for victim and the loved ones, until Anne-Marie’s demise. But was the death a result of alcohol or was there more at play?

Character Development:

Anne-Marie is drinking herself to death, trying to fill a hole that never seems to be filled and to rid herself of that dreadful headache that never seems to disappear. She is stuck in a marriage that she wishes to remove herself from, a husband who does everything wrong and always fails to shows that he cares, in her eyes. And yet, she stays. Anne-Marie is a bold and loud character who could not be silenced even in death, her hatred for others pours through the pages of the book and is a reflection of the same reasons why everyone hated her too! But in the eyes of her mother, Sherri, Anne-Marie can do no wrong.

Daniel has an all too different addiction, food. Whilst Anne-Marie is drinking herself to death, Daniel finds himself emptying the fridge, and what better way to grief his wife than to stuff his face evermore. Daniel lives a life walking on eggshells, never able to say or do anything right by his wife without ending in another screaming match. Daniel is quite a pathetic character, trapped in a marriage and family he is unable to break free of, unable to express his wants and feelings for fear of consequences, but does this give him a motif for murder? Does the death of Anne-Marie really provide him with the freedom that he is hoping for?

Sherri is the mother of perfect Anne-Marie, because Anne-Marie can do no wrong. This is a detestable character who is an enabler of the behaviours exhibited by her daughter, like mother like daughter, one might say. Sherri had a very toxic relationship with her daughter, the concept of unconditional positive regard being at play, she never questioned any behaviours her daughter displayed and was eager to believe ever lie told. No one will ever be good enough for her daughter, and she reminds Daniel of this at every given opportunity, making it known that he is the sole reason for her daughter finding a bottle to drown the sorrows of her miserable life, because wouldn’t everyone need a bottle if they were married to him?

The neighbours all hated Anne-Marie and they wanted her gone, she traumatised their every moment and the neighbourhood isn’t quiet so long as she is alive. But is any of their hatred enough to end their suffering and end Anne-Marie?

Pacing:

The book was a slower read than I was expecting, as I was expecting the death of Anne-Marie to be a lot sooner in the book. Her being alive for a good chunk of the book provides the insight into the relationship of herself and Daniel, but I feel this could have also been portrayed with her dying sooner and the use of flashbacks. With that being said, there is not much insight into the relationship of Daniel and Anne-Marie before it took a bad turn, seeing the relationship in a solely negative light, it makes it difficult to understand what the pair of them are fighting for, this could have been accomplished with a couple of happy memories to show what the alcohol abuse has lost them. Once Anne-Marie was dead, it seemed slightly more rushed afterwards, what with the neighbour hatred being explored and the investigation being squeezed in to solve the death. Some of the chapters could have been split up more for the different perspectives, as at times this was not easy to keep up with when switching between Sherri and Daniel’s thoughts in one chapter – a prime example being the funeral chapter.

Despite this, the book was enjoyable and I enjoyed the fact that you even got to see the perspective of other people in the neighbourhood such as Margie. It is through this in depth reflection, that it shows the huge impact Anne-Marie had on the whole community and gives an understanding on how her death would provide them with peace.

Predictability:

This book was very well written in the aspect that it made you question what you know, at times, I wondered who was telling the truth - because of course Daniel would make himself sound better and Sherri would make him sound worse. Anne-Marie’s brother is the only character other than the police who could see things from both sides and he was the most trustable character in the entire story, despite seeing into his thoughts. At times it was question whether it was the alcohol or suicide that resulted in the death but despite all the twists and turns, I personally found it predictable what had happened.

I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

Packed this in in disgust at only 9%. It's horribly written and presented and I'd downloaded an Amazon update the very same day I started it. So if this is a corrected version, then something is very wrong indeed !!! I find it interesting, too, that the plaudit on the cover attributed to an LM Brynski is also the name of a character in the book itself......
I was only a couple of pages in when I happened upon this line, "There is no way to get her out the house without a fuss" and it just heads downhill from there. Every time she writes brought she meant bought, which is a proper schoolboy error. This whole passage needs a different lot of punctuating to make any sort of sense, "Downstairs Daniel eats on, not caring the slightest bit. The smell of his breakfast clings to her as she falls into the bathroom, struggling to close the door behind her, she sits. Her hands supporting her too heavy head." A total mess.
Then she writes canons as opposed to cannons and nine o clock instead of nine O'clock. I got to this line, "He dragged himself out of bed, finally flippantly flipped the light switch" which speaks for itself and I packed it in.
From all I'd read about Anne-Marie up till this point I personally didn't care who killed her, to be honest.

I'll drink to that

Daniel and Anne-Marie bought the house, hoping to raise a family there. But after the pregnancy was lost, everything went wrong. Constant drinking and her lack of hygiene and the horrible neglect of the house took its toll on the marriage. Anne-Marie became the neighborhood terror. Everyone was afraid of her drunken tirades. Sherri, her mother, enabled Anne-Marie's behavior, and Peter, her brother, was intimidated by his mother, so he did nothing to stop her. When Anne-Marie is found dead at the bottom of the stairs, Daniel becomes a suspect. After he is cleared, he is constantly harassed. Who is behind this, and who did kill Anne-Marie, or was it a drunken accident?

A book with no likeable characters. Anne Marie Mills is an abusive alcoholic, alternately ignoring or abusing her long suffering husband Daniel and being very aggressive to their neighbours. When she's found dead the neighbours and local shop keepers show that they were scared of her reign of terror- widening the pool of suspects from hapless Daniel. Poor downtrodden Daniel does nothing to help himself or her. But is he capable of murder? He's not a character you can empathise with - and as for Anne Marie's family? Enough said? There had to be more to it than met the eye- and there was. #bloodhoundbooks #whokilledannemarie

I was riveted from the get go. Well written and intriguing. There are two sides to every story and that’s exactly what you get here.

~ Daniel is over his wife’s lack of wanting to do anything around the house but drink her precious wine. She doesn’t even speak to him anymore. —- can’t believe what little sympathy Daniel has. She hopes for at least a modicum of concern from her husband. Something. Then the unthinkable occurs. Some may say that they saw it coming, considering what looks like long-term abuse and neglect.

Wow! Loved this book. I loved the conversational and accessible storytelling, which not all authors can pull off. It rang true and authentic. This is totally character driven IMO, finding out who killed her was immaterial to me. I just loved spending time with the messy characters. The writing and storytelling really drew me into the lives of this couple, the chaotic role they played in each other's life. It's a story with dark humour, pain, and mood. It had a frenetic energy; like spending time with George and Martha from "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf". Damaged people unable to grab onto the life raft. Underneath the disgust this couple conjures, there is a sadness as you realize the origins of Anne Marie's self destruction. What a talented author. I want more!

I've left it a few days before I wrote a review because I really don't like giving 2 stars, but I struggled to think of anything I liked about the book. There was no real story, it just plodded along with very little happening. I kept going hoping there would be a twist somewhere but it just didn't happen. I guessed who had killed her early in the book and found it very predictable. This book just didn't work for me. I felt no sympathy for any of the characters as they were all as unpleasant as each other.

Annemarie has a problem, a drink problem, a serious drink problem. Daniel, her husband does not know how to handle it at all, he just wants to return to when she loved him. The neighbours don’t like them, her mother doesn’t like Daniel and her brother tries to keep out of it all but keeps getting dragged in.
The story is written for the characters’ perspectives which lets you see the story from different sides. Do you feel sorry for AnneMarie or Daniel, at times but not always.
Very enjoyable read.

Not a happy book.

I think this is the first book I have ever read that doesn’t have even one nice character in it, including the protagonist or his drunken wife; neither of the two close relatives or the mostly nasty neighbors. I kept telling myself to put it down, but I was really curious about who actually killed Anne-Marie, so I read the whole thing. However, I do NOT recommend it.

This book is essentially a murder mystery but woven through it is a sad story of a marriage that possibly never should have happened and the long lasting ripple effect of a tragedy which ultimately led to another tragedy. I liked the way the truth was only revealed right at the end and certainly wasn't the outcome i expected.

A really challenging subject matter and a great read. Anne-Marie is an alcoholic in a dysfunctional marriage with Daniel. When she ends up dead at the bottom of her stairs Daniel's life spirals out of control. This book will keep you reading even when you have the uncomfortable feeling in your tummy that you want to stop. A solid 4*s from me.

Psycho

Hard to believe a woman could sink this low into alcoholism but i guess it is possible. I think bringing Laura in as a suspect so late in the story was deflating. Not appropriate for readers unused to fowl language.

I had to keep reading.....

I found this to be a depressing book about strange depressed people. But strangely, although I wasn't sure I was going to finish it, the book held me until the end, if only to find out who actually did the deed.

WOW!

A descent into alcoholic madness for one character and deep depression for the one accused of her murder. Accused husband who did not kill her, can't decide how to run away from the accusations since he had actually wished her dead. Who did do it?

Good time waster.

This book, although not the best written, was great to just while away a few hours.
Although predominantly a who done it kind of book, I did find a few lines/ names that made me giggle.
I would definitely read another book by C Thompson just to compare.

Dreadful

I thought this was set in the USA when I started to read it, since the writing style and some of the language is very transatlantic. So I was surprised when the setting emerged as English. But the whole thing is mind-boggling tedious, and not really worth skim reading.

Unusual plot

I suite enjoyed this although it isn't my usual type of book.
It seemed a bit drawn out at times but ending was rushed.
Daniel was realistic, the other characters less so.
