It’s been two years since Kate Evans unexpectedly lost her husband and one year since her aunt Cassandra stepped in and moved Kate and her son back to Colorado to start a new life. Just when Kate is starting to get comfortable in her new reality, three very different men enter her life. Alec is young, easygoing, and up for anything. Nate is a divorced dad who is steady, reliable, and everything Kate should want. Jess is quite literally the boy next door, not to mention a real-life movie star straight from every girl’s dreams. Is she really ready to jump into the dating scene again? Or does she stay in the same safe place free from heartache? In between braving water slides to cheating at croquet, Kate is forced to confront things she’d rather leave buried, along with the possibility of a new love that is exactly what she needs.
Aspen Hadley loves nothing more than a great story. She has devoted herself to story-telling for the majority of her life, writing her first novel at her kitchen table in the 8th grade. Aspen writes what she wants to read: clean, sassy, romantic comedy novels that give you a break from real life and leave you feeling happy.
Outside of writing, Aspen's number one hobby is reading. Number two is sneaking chocolate into and out of her private stash without being caught. Other favorite things include: playing the piano, listening to classic rock, telling jokes around the dinner table, eating ice cream, traveling, a good case of the giggles, and riding on ATVs over the trails around her home in Utah.
Aspen shares her life with a patient husband, 4 hilarious children, and 1 grumpy dog in a quiet suburb next to her beloved mountains.
Given the choice she would road trip her life away, singing along to the radio and sleeping in every morning.
This is Aspen Hadley's first book? Seriously? Man, she writes a good story! I fell in love with her characters and the whole "vibe" of the book.
This book takes a good hard look at relationships. Kate is a widow. Her world was turned upside down when her husband passed away unexpectedly. The problem was that it was unexpected for her, but not for him. He had kept the fact that he was sick from her. With her world turned upside down, she moves to stay with her aunt.
In this story, Kate dates three men. Each of them teaches her different things about herself and she rediscovers who she was before her life changed. There were a few moments when I wanted to tell her to stop and look at what she was doing. (Yes, I do get emotionally invested in fictional characters.) Her son is as cute as can be and I loved the movie star next door, Jess. He was pretty down to earth for a celebrity. ;)
Aspen Hadley writes with a Kate with a very sarcastic side. (Have I mentioned before how much I like a sarcastic voice? It is one of my favorites.) I was entertained by Kate's shenanigans from the first page. I think I smiled through most of the book. This was the escape book that I needed after a couple of stressful weeks.
This book is clean with kissing.

(4.5 Stars) Imagine struggling to get back on your feet after the loss of your husband and discovering that a movie star is moving in next door. That's just what happens to Kate. I enjoyed watching her find herself again after her devastating loss, through a series of dating relationships and self-evaluations.
Kate is the type of character that I want to mother. Luckily, she has her aunt and her aunt's help/friend to get her back on her feet again. She's endured so many losses and in the process, as lost who she is. She's a slightly snarky and hilarious character, with two left feet and a penchant for sweats, but underneath all that is a real treasure.
Her dating experiences were fun, and somewhat cringe-worthy, but the icing on the cake is Jess. He's everything from every girl's dreams all wrapped up in a Hollywood persona. It's a fun story to read because the emotions are real and the characters are well-written, and when you add that to humor and romance, it's a recipe for a winner.
I loved this book so much! Honestly, I read it a few months ago, and I STILL think about it. And I'm pretty sure that Aspen is the queen of kissing scenes. I loved how she tackled the "celebrity" trope without it feeling like a trope at all. I thought it was wonderful and realistic. Read it!!
I loved the way Kate is in this book. She’s a bit of a quirky character and she made me laugh so many times. There’s a part in the first chapter where she karate kicks a swinging door open and makes her aunt’s housekeeper, Zinn, drop a whole bunch of drinks. That scene was so vivid, I could almost see it in my mind. It was interesting to me the way what had happened earlier in Kate’s life doesn’t get brought up for a bit in the plot. I knew something was up with her, but wasn’t sure quite what. Kate is a great mom to her 8 year old son. I loved the way he was the center of her world. It was obvious that she’d do anything she could for him.
There are so many great characters in this one. I loved her aunt Cass and her housekeeper Zinn. Kate’s constant re-writing of the history she had made up for Zinn made me laugh! It was a bit sad that we never actually found out. I also loved Jess. It was kind of fun the way he was always there, especially when Kate did something stupid or wasn’t looking her best. I loved how he goes out of his way to do things with Ethan. I can’t say I really liked Alec, he didn’t go out of his way to do things for Kate, let alone do anything for Ethan. Although, he did provide some funny situations.
The plot of this one was really well done. I loved the contemporary, humorous aspects. This one’s a fun one to read! Go get your own copy.
My close friends will tell you that I have a thing for celebrity romances and this one was so cute! Kate could definitely be my bestie in real life and I loved how down-to-earth and real she is. The first half of the book was more about Kate and her figuring out what she really wants and the real romance doesn't start until about halfway through. Any scenes with Jess and Kate together were just sigh-worthy. I loved all their fun banter and wowzers, that first kiss! Aspen is an auto-read author for me and I am so glad I finally read her first published book!
I really enjoyed this quirky and fun romantic comedy. It had me laughing a lot, with some toe-curling romance thrown in as well. Being inside Kate -the protagonists- head was a hoot. She is so funny! Her thoughts on sweatpants alone were hilarious. Jess was a perfect swoony hero, and I loved his character. A great clean read for sure!
Simply Starstruck by Aspen Hadley is a simply glorious story. I devoured this book in six amazing, fantastic, magical hours. I actually would have read it in one sitting, but I accidentally woke my husband up twice last night with my laughter so I had to force myself to put the book down in the wee hours of the night. Let me tell you, putting the book down for one second was NOT an easy thing to do. Simply Starstruck is unequivocally one of the best Rom-Coms ever written. In my book, it ranks right up there with Bethany Turner’s The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck and Kara Isaac’s Then There Was You.
Simply Starstruck is a masterful story. The plot is highly engaging. The characters are exquisite. Hadley’s witty banter, heartfelt inner monologues, and steamy romantic moments prove she is a writing force to be reckoned with. And, this book had me feeling ALL the feels. I laughed out loud on several occasions, I teared up a little, a couple of times my heart hurt for Kate (the heroine), and I swooned. I swooned hard! The kisses in this book are stellar! The best thing about this story is it is so complex. This book is not simply fun and games. Hadley tackles widowhood, parenthood, blind dates, bad dates, the effects of trauma, anger, and fear. There is a lot packed into this 250-ish page book! One of my favorite things about this book is that it turned a mirror on me and made me contemplate a few of my own issues — after-effects of trauma and fear to name a couple.
Simply stated, Simply Starstruck is a rare gem. This is a must-read novel that will have you laughing one minute, swooning the next, and walking away one satisfied reader once the last page has been turned. At this point, I typically expound upon a character or theme, but I don’t think I can do that without giving away major plot points. So I will leave you with this — find yourself a copy of Simply Starstruck TODAY! This is not a story you will want to miss.
I borrowed a copy of this novel in eBook form through my Kindle Unlimited subscription on November 29, 2019, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This book had me all in fits—in a good way. First of all, I want to be Kate’s best friend. I love her self-deprecating humor and honesty. This book is not only a fun ride, but an emotional one too as Kate comes to terms with herself. And the romance!
Super cute celebrity romance, but in this one, the heroine is determined NOT to fall for Mr. Gorgeous Heartthrob who has moved in next door to her. She has an eight-year-old son and is content with her life. Men can only complicate it and cause her more grief and loss. Her heart can’t deal with that again. But Kate keeps running into Jess Sullivan, and not ever at her best. He’s seen her in stained sweats and with messy hair. He’s seen her with mud on her face, for goodness sake. He’s seen her temper at high flare and he’s seen her break down and lose it. No way would he ever want a nutcase like her who’s slightly overweight when he has thin, stunning models always by his side. But what we imagine about ourselves is not always the truth—often it’s distorted truth—and Kate grows to learn her value and worth over time as she slowly becomes friends with Jess and lets him into her heart. Characters were great. Plot was fun. Romance was a slow-burn build up, but super awesome when the sparks finally ignited. Overall, it was a great read that I really enjoyed.
Aspen Hadley is a new-to-me author, but one whose voice immediately made me feel as though I’d put on a comfy pair of jammies and settled in for movie night with my bestie. First person point-of-view works so well when you have an engaging narrator, and Kate Evans is definitely that, with her mix of self-deprecating honesty and wry humour.
As the entire novel is written from Kate’s point of view, this reads a little more like chick lit than contemporary romance, and the story is as much about Kate sorting herself out as it is about who she eventually ends up with. To begin with, I had a little difficulty believing she was an adult with an eight-year-old son, and I was honestly a bit annoyed with the way she behaved. She came across as immature and didn’t exactly show her best side (and I’m not just talking about her yoga pants and slightly embarrassing mishaps!). But this changed as I got further into the story, and I gradually found myself absolutely and completely absorbed by the inner turmoil Kate was experiencing over the developments in her life.
I won’t spoil anything by mentioning who she ends up with, although it was fairly obvious from the outset, but I loved him from the beginning. His temperament was the perfect balance for Kate, and he ramped up the romance quite nicely at the end! If you’re looking for a fun chick lit-style read, this is a great addition to your TBR.
I really enjoyed this book! Kate is not your typical heroine - she's clumsy, unpredictable, and has a temper. She's also trying to figure out who she is. She lost her parents right after high school and found solace with Charlie who she married. Then they had a child together, and then Charlie got sick and passed away. Kate finds herself alone-ish again; she has her 8-year-old son, Ethan, and her Aunt Cass and her housekeeper, Zinn. She is now living in the cottage behind her Aunt Cass' house, trying to survive.
And then Jess Sullivan moves in next door. He's a good-looking, famous movie star. Kate can't forgive him for the way he keeps seeing her at her worst. Not to mention that gorgeous, but horrible, co-movie star that visits him a lot - Vivienne. But Jess isn't who she expects him to be. He's always there for her, he never tries to change her, he sees the real Kate and he is definitely a fan of hers!
Kate has to figure out who she is, and if it's worth lowering her walls to let someone in again. I loved so many of the secondary characters in this book, too - Jess' family, Aunt Cass, Zinn. This was my first book by this author, but I will definitely be reading more of her books!
My overall feeling when I finished this book was hey that turned out fun. My beginning feelings were not so nice. It starts out with Kate a woman who is grieving the loss of her husband. She is snarky and insecure she is also a disaster. This was funny at firsts, this girl wore the wrong thing, drooped things, ran into things, fell and just was an all around klutz. This is silly and funny for a minute. Then it gets odd fast. By the middle of the book I just wanted to stop reading about this complete wreck of a woman who dated idiots, hated herself and kept getting hurt and of course cliche of cliche then main man would always walk in at the perfect time. I skimmed a bit and then it started to get better. I really enjoyed the ending. If the feel of the ending had been added into the book a bit more I would have enjoyed this. It seemed like all the good and the learning and the feels happens in the last 20 percent of the book. This is a chaste contemporary romance with no religion.
Kate, a 29 year-old widow, mother to an 8 year-old boy, is short, quirky, curvy, clumsy, and the opposite of Hollywood material. But, as she re-enters the dating world, she stumbles upon love where she least expects it, all the while harboring fear in the thought she’d possibly lose someone important to her again.
I laughed out loud, I felt my heart strings tug. Ah! This read was so adorable! I stumbled upon it on my Amazon recommendations. If you’re in dire need of a palette cleanser from your heavy reads and you happen to be a fan of Christina Lauren, READ THIS. You’ll thank me later.
This was an easy, quick fun read. I’m giving 5 stars to Aspen. Her first book! It was definitely a young adult romance. The characters were great. Kate is a recent widow, and both her parents were killed in a car accident. She is dealing with a lot of penned in emotions. Then Jess, the move star, buys the property next door. It was predictable, but sweet. I loved that Wade was the dog!!!
It took me awhile to get into the story but once I did I enjoyed it. The roller coaster at the end was a little frustrating but it was still a good read.
I didn't love the main character in the beginning. I thought she was moody and rude. Then I may have started to recognize some of my own red headed antics in her and I seemed to grow and change right along with her. By the end I was totally happy.
I loved that this story was all about her finding herself and how it was okay for her to date (although the young’un? Not sure that I liked that). I also loved that Jess was always there. I wouldn’t have minded them getting together sooner, but I still thought it was a sweet story!
This is my first Aspen Hadley book and definitely won't be my last! It's hard to believe this is her first book. I enjoyed this sweet romance between a young widow with a young son and the handsome movie star.
Kate doesn't fall for Jess Sullivan right away. Though she's always had a crush on the suave good-looking star, she wants more than a pretty face. She went through losing her parents and her husband so she's not anxious to get involved again only to have her heart broken. Jess for his part is a really nice guy. He's not the typical Hollywood hunk. He has a good heart and genuinely cares for Kate and her son.
Kate doesn't believe a handsome, wealthy, actor could possibly love her. Which sometimes gets annoying because it's obvious that Jess likes her for her and wants to get to know her better. He sees her at her worst (stained shirt and sweatpants!) and even her snarky comments don't turn him off. She dates other guys, but Jess is truly the one who is always there for her.
I enjoyed this cute, sweet, funny romance. The audiobook version was pretty good. The narrator injected just the right amount of emotion. I tend to prefer narrators who change their voice to distinguish between the characters, but even though she didn't do this, it was still an enjoyable audiobook.
Highly recommend this book and look forward to more books by this author. Thanks to Cedar Fort for the complimentary audiobook. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.
I heard a lot of good things about author Aspen Hadley and decided I would give her novel Simply Starstruck a chance. I am glad I did because this novel was very entertaining and I can't wait to read more by this author. Simply Starstruck was laugh out loud comedy. Kate is this very relate able character who is flawed and human in every sense. She loves sweat pants and doesn't always shave her legs. She also has loved and lost a lot and is just trying to figure life out as she navigates life as a widow raising her sweet boy Ethan. Jess Sullivan is a legit movie star who happens to be moving in next door. His sudden appearance in Kate's life seems to spark something and suddenly Kate is dating again, only she is dating everyone except the guy she really should be. This story was fun to read with a lot of humor that genuinely brought a smile to my face. A clean contemporary romance that will keep readers laughing and cheering to the very end.
Sometimes you need a book that helps you escape the chaos of your life and enter the chaos of someone else's. This is that book. Meet Kate Evans. A recent widow who is just starting to date again. You'll laugh as Kate gets herself into all kinds of scrapes. You may even shed a tear near the end. This is a fun read by a new author. I can't wait to see what Ms. Hadley has in for her readers in the future!
Cute, well written in modern day romance. I don’t read many modern day romances because they are either cheesy or trashy. This is neither. I plan on reading more of her books.
I don't review often on here, but this book just deserves it! It is funny, heartwarming, NOT cheesy in my opinion, has down to earth believable characters, and they go through real things! And some of them are really awkward and funny! I also REALLY appreciate that this is clean and has no sexual content. The chemistry was SO there for me with these characters, and it didn't need to get steamy in order for those sparks to fly between them! I so so enjoyed it. I've been reading a ton of rom-com this summer, searching for the perfect clean ones that also ARE. NOT. CHEESY. And this one was just perfect
This was a good life after tragedy book. It wasn't a sad tragic tale at all though. The h has had great loss and this story took us along in that process. I admit I would find the h frustrating and sometimes not acting her age. However, when I put her actions in the perpective of bouncing back from trials I found I understood her better and had more empathy. The interactions between the H & h were always good reading. I loved the H. Lots of times I found I didn't like Zinn, the housekeeper, and thought her condescending and didn't like her. I did like all the other supporting characters. In the description I wondered how the author would write her dating 3 different men but I think she it was well done.
Beautiful ending, certainly made up for the first half of the book. Im not a fan of slow burns, and this was the ultimate slowest ever. I did have a hard time finishing this book, but yet glad I did. 🤷♀️
