Egyes teológusok szerint Grönland úgy keletkezett, hogy a Pokolban költséghatékonysági célzattal kikapcsolták a fűtést. Egede tiszteletes, a lutheri tanok Bede Zsoltja nagyjából így vélekedhet, gondolom. Viszont mások (közöttük is elsősorban a bennszülöttek) szerint erről szó sincs, mert ugyan Grönlandon rohadt hideg van, ez igaz, de akinek ez nem tetszik, az húzzon haza. Húzzanak haza például a dán gyarmatosítók, akik a XVIII. század első felében megjelentek, hogy beteljesítsék királyuk álmát, és a Dán Birodalom koronaékszerévé varázsolják ezt a kies vidéket. Ezek a gyarmatosítók jelentős százalékban tartalmaztak fegyenceket és kurvákat, de igazából velük volt a legkevesebb gond. Mert akadtak közöttük vízióval rendelkező papi személyek meg ambiciózus kormányzók is, akikben nem igazán tudatosult, hogy a sarkvidék köves földjén legfeljebb skorbut, tüdőgyulladás meg vérhas terem. És hát kevés dolog teszi morcosabbá az embert, mint ha a saját székletében kell mínusz negyven fokban haldokolnia.

Leine a tőle megszokott plasztikus brutalitással mutatja be ezt a történelmi szituációt, a kudarcba fúlt dán kolonizáció kísérletét. Az ember testi és szellemi elaljasodása, háttérben a grönlandi táj hideg szépségével önmagában ínyenceknek való szöveg, de Leine gerincet ad a szövegnek azzal, hogy mindezt egy epikus párbaj köré szövi. E párbajban részt vesz egyfelől Egede tiszteletes, fegyverei a vakbuzgóság és a kegyetlenséggel párosult keménység, másfelől pedig Aappaluttoq, a bennszülött "mágus", aki Jézus jó barátja, valamint szellemidéző és szellemutazó. És amikor ők összeakaszkodnak, akkor valójában két világ akaszkodik össze - ha pedig világok akaszkodnak össze, akkor meneküljön, ki merre lát, mert ott kő kövön nem marad.

Talán nem ez a legsikerültebb Leine-könyv - túl sokszor éreztem, hogy a jellegzetesen leinei naturalizmus a testi funkciók ábrázolásában ezúttal indokolatlan, nem tesz hozzá a szöveghez. De ezzel együtt ez a kavargó, időben és térben bátran ugráló nagyregény olyan erővel, olyan dinamizmussal rendelkezik, hogy időnként mintha lendületből a jeges víz alá nyomná a fejünket. Leinét továbbra is nem hogy a skandináv, de a világirodalom egyik legmarkánsabb írójának tekintem.

Sprogligt set balancerer Kim Leine elegant mellem et antikviserende og et moderne op-i-røven-med-dig-nutidssprog. Det lykkes virkelig godt at skabe et levende rum. Men når det så er sagt, var læsningen for mig ikke præget af lyst. Blev grundigt træt af al den svælgen i ulækkerheder, perversiteter, sygdom og død, fordi jeg ikke følte, det førte nogen steder hen, og fordi hverken de marionetdukkeagtige personer eller den løse handling kunne fængsle mig over så mange sider. Bogen kunne med fordel have været skåret 200 sider ned, så havde der måske været færre gentagelser.

Ėmiausi antros trilogijos dalies iš karto po pirmosios ir užspringau, tiesiog pajutau kaip persisotinau tuo šalčiu, purvu, mirtimi, prievarta, kūno išskyromis ir empatijos stygiumi. Turėjau padaryti pertrauką, kad galėčiau ir vėl nerti į to krašto ir laiko jauseną.
Vis tik knyga pasirodė labiau ištęsta, personažai blankesni, juos sunkiau pamilti, pritrūkau kažkokios idėjos.
Šiaip ar taip tikrai lauksiu trečios dalies!

„Mus dengia žiemos tamsa, krantas tamsus ir šiurpus, kaip sugižęs pienas. Bet aš myliu tamsą, tada lengviau susikaupti, negu saulei triukšmingai ritinėjantis dangumi nuo ryto ligi vakaro ir bejaukiant tavo mintis.“

Kokią kalbą reikia pasitelkti norint papasakoti apie knygą, skendinčią tamsoje? Jokia kita netinka, tik jausmų kalba. O jei jausmai tokie, kurių nei aprėpt, nei įvardint neišeina? Sunki tai užduotis papasakoti, kaip giliai ji įklampina, kaip stipriai atstumia ir vėl viliojamai įtraukia. Labai taikliai vertėja Ieva Toleikytė yra pasakiusi: „Kimas Leine tarsi veda skaitytoją pragaro ratais žemyn, bet skaitytojas jaučia, kad šios kelionės reikia.“

O ši kelionė - praeitin – į 1728-uosius, kuomet prie Grenlandijoje gyvenančio pastoriaus Hanso Egedės šeimos prisijungia Danijos karaliaus atsiųsti nauji atvykėliai: meistrai, pirkliai, būrelis kareivių ir tuzinas paskubomis sutuoktų porų – kalinių ir prostitučių.Tokiu būdu kuriama nauja visuomenė, kurioje susiduria dvi kultūros: pagoniškoji ir protestantiškoji. Galvojant, kad tai tiesiog fantazijos išmonė, kraipytum žmogus galvą nuo netikėtumo jausmo, nuo nesuvokiamų situacijų, nepaaiškinamų poelgių. Tačiau verta žinoti, kad istorija labai stipriai paremta realiais įvykiais, o ir žmonės, gyvenantys knygoje, gyveno ir realiame gyvenime.

„Raudonas žmogus / Juodas žmogus“ nėra lengvas skaitinys. Tai meno kūrinys, vertas susikaupimo, rimties ir atsidavimo, keliantis iššūkius, išbandantis ir klausiantis, kiek tu esi čia, šioje istorijoje. Nes pro šalį čia praeiti nevalia. Pasmalsauti ir pasitraukti irgi nevalia. Išbūti toje tamsoje, išjausti vienatvę, neviltį, išgyventi tai, ko mums jau nelemta patirti – toks tikslas.

Antra trilogijos dalis. Antras kartas, kuomet norisi nesidalinti, o turėti tik sau. Bus ir trečias. Yra ko laukti.

„Mirtis dažnai ateina naktį. Nežinau kodėl. Gal dėl to, kad miegas ir mirtis yra giminingi, ir Dievas davė mums miegą, kad jis visą laiką primintų, jog mirsim, ir davė šviesų, gaivų rytmetį, kad primintų mums prisikėlimą, dangų ir amžinąjį gyvenimą.“

I read the first (and most celebrated) book in the Greenland Trilogy by Kim Leine , Prophets of the Eternal Fjord" a few months ago and really enjoyed the late 18th Century tale of the struggles of the Danish colonizers and native Greenlanders but this second book I felt was even better.

Set curiously in the mid 1720's when the first Danish colony was established at Good Hope almost a century earlier than the first book it follows the shambolic attempts of Governor Pors and more particularly the fanatically committed Luther idealising priest Hans Egede to exploit and convert the indigenous population.

No matter (apparently) that the colonists have largely been dragooned by Danish King Frederick IV from prisons and that the colony is founded on just about the most impractical site possible. No matter that Egede, Pors and the other officers are the biggest collection of dissolutes, egoists and misfits ever thrown together. Frederick IV has seen Sweden gain her independence from Danish rule and needs a colonial triumph so the colony goes ahead.

The way chapters in the book are often narrated by the different characters in it including the mystical Greenlandic Shaman with whom Egede is in constant conflict add a vibrancy and authenticity to the book which was truly compelling.

Taking in corrupted faith, murders, natural catastrophes and redemption this was an amazing journey .

I am just sorry that the third book of the trilogy has yet to be translated.

I likhet med forgjengeren, "Profetene i Evighetsfjorden", er dette en helt avsindig underholdende roman. Den veksler sømløst mellom burlesk humor i det ene øyeblikket og bekmørkt alvor i det andre - men kanskje aller helst samtidig. Soleklar sekser på terningen!

Og sånn apropos sorte og røde menn: Jeg tviler jo litt på at den oransje mannen har lest en eneste bok i hele sitt liv, men kanskje Elon kan lese den høyt på senga til han? Da ville han nok ha skrinlagt planene sine om å overta Grønland ganske kjapt :P

A Szellemidéző és a Tiszteletes egy nagyszerű történet Grönland gyarmatosításáról, a két kultúra közötti találkozásról, a természet hatalmáról. Kim Leine két ellentétes szemléletű, már-már összeférhetetlen ember történetét meséli el. Kim Leine egyszerűen jól ír, és a szavak mögött nyers őszinteség van, amelyek elvarázsolják az olvasót. A stílus egyszerű, képszerűen látványos. A legfélelmetesebb élettapasztalatokat jeleníti meg, építi bele a mindennapi események közé.

Þetta er mikil bók og kannski full löng, samt heldur hún manni föstum á vissan hátt með frábærum texta og mögnuðum lýsingum á persónum, mannlífi og stöðum, svo að manni finnist stundum að maður sé á staðnum og ein af persónum sögunnar. Þýðing bókarinnar er að mínu mati alveg frábær þó ég hafi nú ekki mikið vit á slíku. En hún hefði alveg mátt missa sig um þó nokkrar blaðsíður.

Kim Leine palaa Punainen mies, musta mies -kirjassa takaisin Grönlantiin. Kirja on nimetty myös Grönlantitrilogian kakkososaksi, joten lisää tarinoita Leinen tavaramerkkimaasta on odotettavissa.

Kirja haluaa ykkösosan upean Ikuisuusvuonojen profeetan tavoin olla suurromaani sekä sivumäärältään että aiheeltaan. Taas asutetaan siirtomaata, käännytetään pakanoita, juodaan viinaa ja irstaillaan.

Olen lukenut Ikuisuusvuonojen profeetan ja Kuilun ja kiintynyt makaaberiin Leineen. Leinen teksti ja tyypit ovat aika kuvottavia ja hyvin fyysisiä sisäelimineen, eritteineen ja muine hillittömyyksineen, joihin he uppoavat aina vaan syvemmin. Toisaalta kirjojen henkilöhahmot ovat hyvin henkisiä, ponnistelevat aatteissaan eteenpäin samalla kun taistelevat tositarkoituksella demoneitaan vastaan.

Punainen mies, musta mies -kirjassa Leine oli yllättäen muuttunut leikkisäksi ja kepeän sarkastiseksi kööpenhaminalaiselämän ja kuninkaanhöpsötysten kuvaajaksi. Tästä en pitänyt sitten yhtään. Parahin Kim Leine: Maailma ei tarvitse toista Peter Høegiä!

Luin Leinen kirjaa, aiheensa puolesta kiinnostavaa, mutta käsittelytavaltaan latteaa, tosissani pettyneenä kunnes sivulla 463 tapahtui suuri muutos. Minulle kirja alkoi vasta silloin, sillä sain takaisin suuresti arvostamani mustanpuhuvan ja hyvin henkilökohtaisen gootti-Leinen.

Vieniems ten būna: nori trumpų, lengvų, neįpareigojančių santykių – o ima ir įsichliopina metams ar dešimtmečiams. Tai man va lygiai taip su knygomis: jau seniai noriu prigriebti kokią lengvą, paprastą, greitai perskaitomą, smagią – o jau turbūt pusė dešimtmečio, kad kai imuosi, tai beveik visada kažkaip nutinka ~500 puslapių storumo plyta. Ir ne kokių ten nuotykinė peidžturnerinė fantastika - o būtent kažkas ne tokio lengvo irba malonaus.

Na bet skaitau. Nes įdomu. Arba naudinga. Arba ir tai, ir tai.

Kimo Leine „Raudonas žmogus. Juodas žmogus“ - būtent iš tokių. Nepadoriai stora, pilna visko, kas toli gražu ne smagu ir malonu – na bet velniškai įdomu ir va būtent velniškai traukianti skaityti – velniškai, nes žinai, kad ten vien velniava visokia bus ir beveik nieko pozityvaus, bet vis tiek skaityti norisi. Mazochizmas kažkoks.

RŽ/JŽ yra antroji vadinamosios Grenlandijos trilogijos dalis ir pirmosios dalies – „Amžinybės fjordo pranašų“ - priešistorė. Aha, tokia biškį papainiota leidyba, bet netrukdo. Minimaliai atskleidžiant siužetą – čia pasakojama apie (realią istorinę asmenybę), kuri ten pirmojoje knygoje užverbuoja jos protagonistą vykti misijauti į Grenlandiją.

Kaip ir pirmoji dalis, knyga didele dalimi pasakoja apie liuteroniškai krikščionišką Grenlandijos kolonizaciją – tik čia pasakojama apie jos pradžią.

Ir pirmą antrosios knygos dalį atrodo, kad tai yra tiesiog pirmosios knygos klonas. Su kitais veikėjais, kitu laikmečiu – bet šiaip jau klonas. Su tuo jau gerai pažįstamu purvu ir visomis žmogiškomis išskyromis, krikščionišku žiaurumu ir dviveidiškumu, depresija ir taip toliau.

Bet ilgainiui atsiranda ir įdomesnė pusė – grenlandų čiabuvių pusė. Nes čia vienas iš personažų yra inuitų šamanas, kurio sūnų em... užgrobia? perima? pavagia? krikščionių misionierius. Ir dar toks misionierius, kad maža nepasirodys.

Lygiai kaip ir pirmojoje knygoje - daug kolonialistinio ir emocinio purvo, tamsos, skausmo, mirties. Bet truputis daugiau Grenlandijos - o įdomiausia, žinoma, inuitai. Tik jų bent jau mano skoniui aiškiai per mažai.

Tad jei vertinant abi knygas – antroji bent jau man labiau. Vos vos mažiau purvo, krikščioniškojo brudo, kiek daugiau gamtos, mielesni (dar nenucivilizuoti) autochtonai.

Tik va vienas negeras dalykas – perskaičius antrą dalį, po truputį jau norisi vėl skaityti pirmąją. O tokios prabangos – pakartotinai skaityti storas (ir dar neseniai) perskaitytas knygas - paskutiniu metu kažkaip jaučiuosi nebeturintis :/

Anyways, rekomenduoju. Beje, gal visai verta pradėti ir iškart nuo antros dalies, o tada pereiti prie pirmos būtų net geriau? Būtų išlaikytas chronologiškumas.

Hadde som nevnt veldig store forventninger til bok en. Ble litt skuffet. Denne er litt lik den første. Men den tunge stemninger er jo meningsfull, for dette er en tung og ikke så god historisk periode som vi skal opplyses om.

Hvor er jeg dog glad for, at Danmark har en forfatter som Kim Leine.

Det er min første, umiddelbare tanke efter at have færdiggjort Rød mand/ Sort mand, en roman om danskernes kolonisering af Grønland i årene 1721-1735. Det er en historisk fiktion, men som Leine selv er hurtig til at påpege i et efterskrift kan der være "en større sandhed og økonomi i digtet end i faktualiteten" ( sic). Det er, i hvert fald i dette tilfælde, ganske rigtigt.

Rød mand/ Sort mands bidrag til de historiske omstændigheder er ikke ubetydeligt. Foruden at fortælle denne meget vigtige historie, formår romanen virkelig at understrege hvor absurd og irrationel den religiøse og økonomiske kolonisering af Grønland egentlig var. Som når den danske kirurg i kolonien, Christian Kieding, ræsonnerer sig frem til at mandskabets tænder må hives ud for at forhindre skørbug, i en absurd omvending af årsag og virkning: "Tænderne er altid noget af det første der bliver ramt af skørbugen. De løsner og falder ud. Stort set alle i kolonien lider af løse tænder. Og tanken tiltaler mig, at vende årsag og virkning - i dette tilfælde skørbug og tænder - at berøve årsagen dens virkning, så at sige at gå til angreb på virkningen for derigennem at komme årsagen til livs. Altså: Ud med tænderne!" (186) Crazy!

Disse omvendinger er der mange af: Hvem er de fornuftige, og hvem er de gale? Hvem er de kristne, og hvem er de vantro? Hvem er Gud, og hvem er Djævelen? (Bogen baserer sig i høj grad på Dantes Commedia). Ét af de mere prægnante øjeblikke forekommer i et af Jomfru Titias flashbacks til sine nonnedage, hvor hun i klostergården pludselig begynder at gumle hovederne af samtlige høns. En gal handling, ja, men også under gale omstændigheder. "Hun tænker på om det med hønsene var fordi hun var afsindig, eller om det var fordi hendes liv i klosteret var afsindigt, og at hun på en eller anden måde måtte gøre noget afsindigt for at få det afsindige til at holde op?" (276). Lige så er mange af de mest fornuftige mænd og kvinder i kolonien også de mest vanvittige. Hvilken skør logik er det ikke lige, der får kongen til at sende 12 tvangsgiftede ægtepar, et par læger, nogle købmænd og en præst eller to til Grønland til at starte med?

Jeg fandt romanen fascinerende og velskrevet, og nu er jeg bestemt ikke afskrækket fra at begynde på Profeterne i evighedsfjorden. Jeg ser måske endda lidt frem til det.

Litt sliten etter å ha lest disse 600 sidene. Ikke akkurat "less is more" 😊
Men det er jo noen fantastiske historier han tegner opp, og jeg er veldig fascinert at dette på mange områder er tett på virkeligheten.
Legen som har en teori om at sykdommen begynner med tennene, og dermed begynner å trekke tennene til de fleste i kolonien f.eks....
Skriver absolutt bra, men synes kanskje den religiøse dimensjonen får litt vel mye fokus i boka. Men med tanke på Leines oppvekst er ikke dette så rart.

Pirma knygos pusė įgriso, kelis kartus vos nemečiau skaityt. Kažkokie dirbtini veikėjai, tarsi iš jų būtų padaryti ekstremumai vien dėl ekstremumo, nu kad būtų šlykščiau/beprotiškiau ir pan. Pirmoj knygoj visas tas purvas ir baisybės turėjo prasmę, plaukė iš siužeto ir t.t., o čia bbž. Pridrėbta tiek pat purvo, bet kažkaip be prasmės. :D

Kažkur nuo vidurio vis tik įsitraukiau, labiausiai dėl visokių tikrų istorinių aplinkybių. Nu ir tie veikėjai galiausiai sudomino. :D
Tai kažkaip taip ir pabaigiau.

Nežinau ar skaitysiu trečią dalį. Gal.

The Colony of Good Hope is a story based on fact: the attempt by Denmark, in the 1720s, to establish a colony in Greenland and to make Christians of the indigenous people.
I chose this book as I enjoy reading fiction that gives an insight into other countries and their histories and cultures and provides you with different perspectives on the world. In this case, I knew very little about Danish history and nothing at all about that of Greenland. Reading "The Colony of Good Hope" has decreased my ignorance a little: however the author warns, in his afterword, that “this book is a fiction … it runs closer to actual historical events than its predecessor but it should not be read as a reliable historical account”.
The words “its predecessor” give away the fact that this is the second book in a trilogy: I wasn’t aware of this until reaching the end of the book and it stands alone perfectly well.
Leine marshals a large cast of characters, most of whom (again, quoting from the afterword) “were real people and appear under their own names. While I have made use of their biographies … I have taken considerable liberties with them”.
These characters range from the king of Denmark, through the group of convicts and sex workers who are conscripted to provide the labour force and form the backbone of the colony, to the indigenous Greenlanders. The narrative is divided between an omniscient narrator and a variety of these characters, including a ship’s captain; a surgeon; the governor’s mentally-ill housekeeper (whose stream-of-consciousness ramblings make her the most challenging of the narrators to read); Appaluttoq the shaman and Katerina, a Greenlander who has become a devout Christian. While it can take time to get into each new narrator, this technique allows you to get inside the characters and to see the various personages from different perspectives.
The title refers to the name of the colony “Godthåb”: however, the original Danish title translates as “Red Man, Black Man”. The “red man” is Appaluttoq, whose words open the novel; the “black man” is the Lutheran minister, Hans Egede. The two are locked in a continual struggle, and not just for the souls of the Greenlanders. However, although the English title is very different and comparatively literal it is not a bad one. Hope is endemic among the settlers – hope of wealth, power, success, attaining salvation (and bringing the so-called “heathens” to salvation) or just hope of survival; even the futile hope of the alchemist.
Egede is at the centre of the book, as he is at the centre of the colony. A severe and unbending clergyman, a devout and uncompromising Lutheran, hot-tempered, feared by his family and mostly unsuccessful in his efforts to convert the Greenlanders to Christianity – something he is himself so aware of that he is reluctant to baptise any of them, knowing that they are not truly convinced by his preaching. Egede is seen through the eyes of the various narrators and is presented as a complex character, and one for whom we can even feel sympathy, rather than merely a stereotyped man of religion.
The book requires a strong stomach in places: there are visceral accounts of a post-mortem, childbirth, a mastectomy and the effects of a smallpox epidemic as well as a character with Ozzy Ozbourne tendencies. The descriptions of the colony and the Greenlanders’ dwellings use smell as much as they do sight.
Translator Martin Aitken skilfully conveys the various voices and a sense of the language and idiom of the 1700s.
“The Colony of Good Hope” is a slow burn, not conventionally dramatic and potentially dramatic incidents are often downplayed. Even so, it draws the reader in and while it is not always an easy read it is certainly a rewarding one.

It seems fitting that I come to the end of the epic saga that is The Colony of Good Hope, on Australia Day, January 26th (also my birthday but just adding that detail for my sake). One might wonder how this book and this day somehow fit together. At the root of both are the events surrounding colonisation of remote and far flung lands by a culture and community somehow entering and claiming a land that perhaps is not there’s to claim.

Kim Leine has written an epic masterpiece and every one of its 550 or so pages drew me in more and more to the dissonant clash of cultures accompanying the colonisation of the rugged and harsh land of Greenland. It is a story of majestic landscapes, the forces of nature, the meeting of cultures, dominance and servitude, superiority and inferiority and intriguingly fathers and sons.

At the centre of this historical fiction is Hans Egede, priest and missionary to Greenland acknowledged as one of the most influential people in Greenland’s history. Tasked and self appointed converter of heathen souls, Egede epitomises everything that is oppressive about colonisation. The shaman character of Aappaluttoq, features throughout as the nemesis of Egede, spiritual leader, and while ultimately converted to Christianity, represents everything that is opposite the uninvited culture that is asserting itself. Two fathers, two men, engaging in a cosmos battle of opposing ideologies. A shared son, Frederick Christian, caught between two worlds and representative of the coming together of cultures that are so vastly different.

I am compelled to understand this period of history in this part of the world after reading this book. It is indeed an epic saga and while fictionalised it is steeped in a rich and real history in a land that has influenced the shape of a culture and a people. This is the legacy of colonialism worldwide. 5 stars.

There wasn't much I enjoyed about this book. Based on the title I was expecting a book about Greenland where the natives' perspective would be strongly represented, but that turned out to not be the case. The natives had very small roles compared to the Danes, which I think is a big shame because a) we have heard enough stories from the point of view of the conqueror and b) the natives' perspective would have surely been more interesting. None of the characters were people I was interested in and so even descriptions of people dying in great numbers didn't make me sad while reading the book. There were certain things that really annoyed me in the writing of the book. For instance, almost all (or maybe even actually all) female characters were introduced with a description of what was in between their legs. Most women were included in this book purely for the sexual pleasure of the men and even when the book included chapters with a female perspective, they were oddly sexualised. Luckily the book was quite light to read (even though it had over 600 pages) so I kept on going, because I wanted to give the book a chance to turn good. Unfortunately that didn't happen for me.

Jeg lukker Rød mand/Sort mand med en ambivalent følelse inden i. Jeg er bestemt blevet revet med og har flere gange haft svært ved at ligge den fra mig, på den ene side!!! På den anden side har bogen været virkelig drøj at tygge sig igennem. Leine taber mig adskillige gange, som læser, med sine konstante perspektiv skift. Jeg kan alm. godt lide at få fortællinger givet fra forskelligt syn, men her er det så voldsomt, at jeg føler vigtige detaljer går tabt undervejs. Nogle begivenheder i bogen bliver hurtigt fejet væk, og jeg kan ikke lade være med at tænke på, om de så i virkeligheden bare er overflødige.
Bogen er helt sikkert tankevækkende i sin kontrast mellem fiktion og historie, og bestemt værd at læse, hvis man er nysgerrig omkring kolonialiseringen af Grønland. Når det er sagt, mener jeg personligt ikke bogen lever op til mine forventninger.

Kim leines seneste roman : rød mand/sort mand - lever fuldt op til forventningerne og niveauet i “profeterne”

Romanen er nummer 2 og efterfølger til profeterne - omend den u tid ligger ca 50 år før - nemlig omkring opbygningen af den første danske koloni i Nuuk omkring hans egedes mission.

Sproget og fantasien er som vanligt yderst naturalistisk - og mange gange surrealistisk. Indlevelsen i koloniens befolkning (deserterede soldater og ludere), deres elendige livsvilkår- hygiejne - sexliv - sult - sygdom og død er imponerende

Fortællingerne er spændende - hjertegribende

Kim Leinen Grönlanti-trilogian toinen osa "Punainen mies, musta mies" on ehkä vielä parempi kuin sarjan 1. osa "Ikuisuusvuonon legendat". Kirja on fiktiivistä Grönlannin historiaa 1700-luvun alusta oikeilla historiallisilla henkilöhahmoilla.

Millä oikeudella eurooppalainen kristitty, oli hän sitten pietisti, luterilainen, katolinen tai hernhutilainen, pitää itseään parempana kuin grönlantilainen alkuperäiskansalainen, tuo "villi" ja "lapsenmielinen", jota on syytä kurittaa ja alistaa. Ei sen puoleen samaan läjään näillä yltiöuskovaisilla lähetyssaarnaajilla menee naiset ja tytöt.

Kirja on raskastakin luettavaa enkä todellakaan löytänyt tästäkään yhtään mitään samaistumispistettä mihin tarttua. Silti pidän Leinen tyylistä kirjoittaa. Kaiken arkisen kuvauksen ohella (muun muassa suoliston toiminnon kuvauksen) se menee välillä yliluonnollisen ja paranormaalin puoleiseksi sekoiluksi.

Mielenkiintoisinta oli hieman satiirinen asenne uskontoon ja uskovaisiin, vaikka hienojakin ajatuksia Raamatusta kirjassa vilisee. Enemmän kuin musta mies, tietää tuo punainen mies maailmasta.

Rød mand/Sort mand (read in Dansih) is Kim Leine's prequel to his first historical novel about the early days of Greenland's history. That work, Profeterne i Evighedsfjorden, now available in English as Prophets of Eternal Fjord, begins in the late 18th century. Rød mand/Sort mand -- which is as long and dark as a Greenlandic winter -- goes back to the early 17th century when the minister Hans Egede was trying to convert the Inuit to Christianity. The Danish crown decided to send prisoners to help establish a European presence, much like the prisoners dispatched during that era to New South Wales (now Australia) to populate that colony. Greenland doesn't prove a hospitable place for them, or for almost anyone - including the natives, once alcohol and disease are introduced from Europe. The main conflict in this skillfully written but challenging book is between a shaman (the red man) and Hans Egede (a rather despicable man in black). We can see whose side Leine is on in this fight in which one man has magical powers and the other only his eroding faith in God and Martin Luther.

Jeg ved ikke helt hvad jeg skal synes om Rød Mand/Sort Mand. På den ene side fløj jeg igennem den og skulle altid lige nå et kapitel mere -- på den anden side var det til sidst lidt med en følelse af 'okay, NU må der snart ske noget', eller 'NU kommer der nok gang i handlingen'. Det gjorde der ikke, ikke for alvor. Hvor forgængeren havde en tydelig hovedperson og handlingsforløb med spændingskurver og udvikling, er Rød Mand/Sort Mand mere løst sat sammen, et væld af fortællerstemmer der glider ind og ud mellem hinanden, handlingstråde der af og til slutter med et brag, andre gange bare fiser lidt ud i sneen. Leine skriver fint, og nyder tydeligvis at svælge i blod og sygdomme og lort og hvad der ellers var en del af kolonitilværelsen, men lidt for ofte synes jeg måske der er noget jappende, nu-skal-vi-fra-A-til-B-agtigt over det hele -- så sker der det, så sker der det, og så er man allerede videre. Det er synd, for når det er godt, er det VIRKELIG godt, som når Luther og Lucifer duellerer på ord i en eskimohytte eller når den får fuld gas til en missionærgudstjeneste. Men der er lidt for langt mellem højdepunkterne, og lidt for meget tomgang mellem dem.

Synkkä, pessimistinen näkemys tanskalaisten siirtolaisuudesta Grönlannissa. Naisten asema alhainen, kirjailijalla lienee ongelmia tällä saralla. Kristillistä käännytystyötä paholaista vastaan. Kulkutauteja. Historiaa jonkin verran kun osasi rivien välistä sitä tulkita. Olipa ankea romaani, ei mitenkään minun makuuni.
