About the author

Marxist historian, sociologist and orientalist. He was the son of a Russian-Polish clothing trader and his wife who both died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. After studying oriental languages, he became a professor of Ethiopian (Amharic) at EPHE (École Pratique des Hautes Études, France). He was the author of a rich body of work, including the book Muhammad, a biography of the prophet of Islam.

Rodinson joined the French Communist Party in 1937 for "moral reasons", but later turned away after the party's Stalinist drift. He was expelled from the party in 1958. He became well known in France when he expressed sharp criticism of Israel, particularly opposing the settlement policies of the Jewish state. Some credit him with coining the term "Islamic fascism" (le fascisme islamique) in 1979, which he used to describe the Iranian revolution.

‎دوستانِ گرانقدر، این کتاب تقریباً از 290 صفحه تشکیل شده، ولی هیچ نکتهٔ مهّم و قابل چکیده نویسی ندارد که در این ریویو به آن بپردازم... نوشته های کتاب بدونِ منطق و به دور از اندیشه بوده و سعی بر این است تا سرزمین فلسطین و اطراف آن که به مانند ایران، موردِ هجومِ تازیان واقع شده است را متعلق به تازیان بداند، آنهم بدون اندکی دلایل خردمندانه و منطقی... در جای جای کتاب غرب ستیزی به چشم میخورد که بسیار حرکتِ ابلهانه و بیخردانه ای میباشد و گویا تمامِ مخاطبان همچون خودشان ابله هستند که باور کنند که تمامِ مشکلات مسلمانها و اینکه تروریست هستند و آرامش انسانهای دیگر را بهم میزنند و میان فرقه ها و مذهب های گوناگون اسلام همچون شیعه و سنی مدام جنگ و اختلاف و کشتار پیش می آید، تماماً زیر سرِ دولت های غربی میباشد

‎علتِ آنکه سید جمال الدین اسدآبادی، خود را افغانی خواند، آن بود که در خارج از حوزهٔ ایران نفوذِ کلام پیدا کند و دچار تعصباتِ قشریِ فرقه های مختلف نگردد. ملیت پرستی تحفهٔ غرب است و غرب با رواج دادنِ جنگ هایِ ملی در خاورمیانه موفق شده است در عالمِ اسلام تفرقه ایجاد کند. غرب به کمکِ جاسوسانِ مسیحی و یهودیِ خود، در امپراطوری عثمانی، این امپراطوری را نخست از درون متلاشی کرد و سپس تکه تکه از کیکِ بزرگِ این امپراطوری کند و خورد..... با پیدایش اندیشهٔ ملتخواهی در اروپا، بیماری ملی گری انحطاطی غرب، در نتیجهٔ تلقیناتِ مضحک و بیمارگونهٔ دموکراسی غربی، در میانِ مللِ مسلمان رواج یافت و نتیجه، مثله شدنِ کاملِ دولت و ملت اسلامی بود

‎گفته شده است که چون عرب ها در قرن هفتم، فلسطین را تسخیر نظامی کرده اند، آنها نیز مثل رومیان و جنگجویان صلیبی و ترکان، اشغالگر هستند. در این صورت چرا باید عرب ها را بیش از دیگران و بویژه بیش از یهودیان، بومیان منطقه به شمار آورد؟ چرا که یهودیان نیز در دوران باستان، بومیان این منطقه بودند یا لااقل مدتی درازتر از دیگران اشغالگر منطقه بوده اند
‎این درست است که گروه کوچکی از عرب های عربستان در قرن هفتم، فلسطین را تسخیر نظامی کردند، ولی مردم فلسطین بزودی زیر سلطه عرب ها، عرب از کار درآمدند، همان طور که قبلاً عبرانی، آرامی و تا حدودی حتی یونانی شده بودند. اینها طوری عرب شدند که هرگز مثلاً رومی یا عثمانی نشده بودند، زیرا با بومیان به طور ریشه داری درهم آمیختند

This is an excellent little book, written and published in the late 60´s (I inherited it in a gorgeous library of Penguin and Pelicans) and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a "straight", unbiased history of the region. Although some extra seventy years have passed now since the book came out, the roots of the current and ongoing problems in the region are those described in this work.
Here you will find a potted history of the area and its people, a narrative history of the establishment of the state of Israel, clear-eyed biographies of the main players in the story, and objective discussions of such touchy topics as Zionism, Arab nationalism and the role of the USA and its Jewish population in the the support of Israel.
Highly recommended.

It's been nearly a decade since I've read this, so take that for what it's worth, but this is possibly the most lucid and eloquent presentation in English of the Arab-Israeli conflict from a non-Zionist perspective. It is of course rather dated (I believe the narrative ends somewhere in the 70's, if that) and the conflict is not the high priority issue among Arabs that it once was, but if you are a Westerner or non-Arab seeking to understand the Palestinian plight, you could do far worse than to pick up this book.

Wonderfully written, brief, yet historically vigorous, Rodinson excels in his depiction of the course of the Arab-Israeli conflict. He is true to his vocation as a scholar in refusing to lower himself to the passionate furies in which his subject matter is immersed. But he also refuses to let his objective mentality to blind him to the political realities he intends to expose: namely, the colonial nature of the Zionist project and the consequences thereof.

Rodinson treats the period from the ottoman era to the era immediately following the Six Day War. Readers will find his historical vision to be wide, encompassing dynamics broader than just the Middle East and the Arab-Israeli conflict. His descriptions of the interplay of domestic politics and diplomacy in the 1950s-60s is truly excellent and illuminating, well into the first quarter of the 21st century.

Rodinson’s gloomy prognosis for the Middle East’s future has been verified. But such a prediction is easy to wager, knowing the players. However, his analysis of concrete conditions guided him to the conclusion that Israel must either a) become a full democracy, including all residents of the land between the river and the sea and 1948 refugees or b) embark on a “South African” solution of racial apartheid and belligerence, at open or covert war with all its neighbors depending on the circumstances. Which course has been selected by Israel’s elites and populous is obvious. It is to Rodinson’s credit that he presenting of Israel as a settler-colonial, apartheid state decades before such ideas gained credence in the west. Those who see immanent trends clear than their contemporaries have the privilege to predict with accuracy.

It is the humility, courage, and rectitude of men like Rodinson which keeps alive hope in dark times.

Whilst the richness of the text may not be greatly accessible for the average reader, the history it portrays constitutes a compelling narrative. The author is balanced in his discussion of the subject matter which offers reader an authoritative grounding in a controversial and often emotive subject matter. The text remains as relevant today as it was at the time of writing. A must read for those interested in the Arab-Israeli conflits.

Ο Ροντένσον εξετάζει τις ρίζες του σιωνιστικού κινήματος, τη δημιουργία του κράτους του Ισραήλ και τις αντιδράσεις του αραβικού κόσμου. Καλύπτει τις διαφορετικές φάσεις της σύγκρουσης, από τις πρώτες εβραϊκές μεταναστεύσεις μέχρι τους πολέμους, αναλύοντας ταυτόχρονα τις διεθνείς πολιτικές παρεμβάσεις και τα συμφέροντα των μεγάλων δυνάμεων. Δεν είναι μια αφήγηση γεγονότων, αλλά μια προσπάθεια κατανόησης των βαθύτερων αιτιών.
Ο σκοπός του συγγραφέα είναι να προσφέρει μια αντικειμενική, ψύχραιμη ανάλυση ενός εξαιρετικά φορτισμένου θέματος. Ο Ροντένσον, προσπαθεί να αποδομήσει τους μύθους και τις συναισθηματικές προσεγγίσεις και από τις δύο πλευρές.
