Are you looking for a romantic suspense story and one that is in a series, then I found this one to be a very good one, strong characters a great setting and danger abounds.

Abbie Forrest is an artist born and bred a city girl but after her husband is charged and then acquitted of terrible crimes, she is now estranged from her young daughter and sister, she packs up and moves to the country, she chooses a house that is isolated and quiet so as she can concentrate on her painting, she has settled in well and has made many friends with the locals.

Rupert Perry is the town policeman he moved here after losing his wife and is very happy with his hours and the feeling of belonging to the community, it is nice and quiet her, until it isn’t and he is also very attracted to Abbie, not only is she good looking she is very easy to talk to.

But when Rupe is called out to Abbie’s place to investigate some strange goings on he is worried about her living alone and when a couple of young people who know Abbie’s daughter Georgia arrive and then her daughter arrives unexpectedly, thinks start to get even more strange and the danger builds, will Abbie and Georgia be safe, if Rupe has anything to do with it they will.

This is one filled with lots of suspense and danger and a romance that has a few ups and downs, there are some things from both their pasts that need to be spoken about before they can look to the future, I did very much enjoy this one and I do highly recommend it, now to read book two.

Abbie Forrest is an artist who had been married to a college professor who also happened to be a serial rapist easly finding his victims on campus. That's the past. She has now moved on with her life - moved from Sydney, Australia on to a new home in Taylor's Bend, a small town far from Sydney. It's been a wonderful change for her. Her new home has a fantastic studio and her painting has been going quite well. She has finished and posted to the art dealer three of the six paintings needed for her next show. Life is good. And then it isn't. Strange things have been happening; mysterious cars appearing at her house, finding that the groceries left on her front step aren't missing but have been put away in the pantry, footsteps on the gravel outside in the middle of the night and hearing gunshots, finding a dead animal outside her door and it looks like it has been shot. But the word around town is that there is a prowler around. Maybe that's who is doing this. But, why? Probably she is just a random victim. Senior Constable Rupert "Rupe" Perry is way more concerned about these incidents. Too many coincidences. There's something strange and possibly sinister and dangerous going on here. He is determined to get to the bottom of this. He feels a great need to protect Abbie.

The Secrets that Lie Within by Elisabeth Rose is a suspense story with lots of action as well as various twists and turns. The storyline includes intriguing surprises that will make the reader sit up and take notice. The relationship that develops between Abbie and Rupe is a slow buildup to their HEA. They are both strong characters with baggage that will impact their relationship. I enjoyed these characters and how they managed to overcome their issues. Some things are very difficult to move on from. Overall this was an entertaining, surprising read.

New to me author Elizabeth Rose has delivered a cracking Australian rural romantic suspense in The Secret That Lies Within. Set in southern NSW the story is centred around divorcee Abbie, who’s moved to Taylors Bend to start a new life after going through the mill when she discovered her husband of many years was also a serial rapist.
Abbie is a talented and sought-after artist and finds the tranquil yet remote property she has bought is perfect both for allowing her to heal and for enabling her to create the landscape paintings for which she is so highly regarded. A series of unexplained and increasingly unsettling events play havoc with Abbie’s tranquility and as these are investigated by local police officer Rupert Perry the friendly relationship the two have shared in the past slowly develops to something more.
This story had so much to keep me both interested and curious. First of all there were the things that happened to Abbie, and going into details would be to spoil the story for others. Suffice to say the terror ramped up as the story progressed. Secondly though there was Abbie’s previously strained relationship with her daughter Georgia, a result of Abbie’s divorce from Georgia’s father. There were plenty of fences to mend here and these helped to round out Abbie as a very genuine character. Thirdly there was the way the community of Taylor’s Bend rallied around Abbie as her world slowly fell apart. I love the sense of neighbourly concern that pervades country towns and Taylor’s Bend is packed with good neighbours. These people might gossip about each other, but when adversity strikes, this is a community that protects its own.
I really struggled to put this book down when life got in the way. The story was packed with hooks to keep me reading and paced to perfection. I loved it and will happily look out for more from Elizabeth Rose in the future.

This book wasn't horrible buuuut wasn't the greatest either. I was intrigued by the blurb and when I started I was enticed but then it started losing my interest. The cop one of the main characters didn't really feel like he knew what was going on and so I lost interest in him. And I like romance books that is what I will always go for, doesn't but didn't feel like these two really had much of a connection, yes I understood the baggage that she came from who wouldn't but it was a slow burn I like a little more heat.

I picked up this book because I have read other books by the same author in the past and really liked them. I was very disappointed in this one. I didn’t realize it wasn’t “clean” but that would’ve been okay if the story had been really good. It dragged quite a bit but I was intrigued and wanted to know how it turned out. The more I read, the more violent it became and I just couldn’t read anymore. I quit at 76%. It just wasn’t for me.

I found The Secrets that Lie Within to be an okay book, not a favorite and a very slow read. It never felt like it was going to pick up speed or completely capture my interest. After seven chapters, I honestly turned to the back of the book just to see where it was heading.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Unfortunately, this book wasn't what I expected it to be. I was expecting a romance with a little mystery and suspense. Instead, the book is clunky, ill-conceived mystery that never really reaches a satisfying conclusion. The romance was there, although I didn't find myself invested in it. Rupert seemed to be a bit of a bumbling cop, disregarding clues and circumstances that he should have investigated. I suppose this was done to prolong the mystery, but it simply left large holes in the plot and took me out of the story. I did not find Abbie to be either a strong or likeable heroine. The "frightening events" and the motivation behind them did not seem to be thoroughly explained and I didn't buy the conclusion. I think this book had a good idea, but failed in the execution.
