Atlas of the World

Rate this book
When Oxford's Atlas of the World debuted, it was widely praised for the incredible beauty and accuracy of its maps and for its wealth of geographical information. Now in a new Seventh Edition, it remains the finest top-of-the-line atlas available, with hundreds of stunning full-color,
large-format maps produced by Europe's finest cartographers. In addition, the Atlas boasts 66 maps of major metropolitan areas worldwide, an extensive index, and a colorful 48-page Introduction to World Geography, providing a wealth of information on such topics as climate, the greenhouse effect,
plate tectonics, agriculture, population and migration, global conflicts, and much more.
The Seventh Edition has been thoroughly updated. The revisions include the new administrative areas in Poland and Nigeria; new maps of Kosovo and of the No-Fly Zone in Iraq (added to the "Regions in the News" section); and sharper, digital lettering that is easier to read. Finally, roads and
rail lines have been reconfigured on some thirty maps, including all areas of North America, South America, and Australia.
Providing the finest global coverage available, Atlas of the World is the benchmark by which all other international atlases will be measured.

I haven't made it through every single page... These maps will take years to comb through and I'm so grateful to have this beautiful reference as the centerpiece of my coffee table.

I have, however, finally finished reading all of the educational information that accompanies these maps. At times it felt like reading a reference book because I was, indeed, reading a reference book. But it also felt like reading history, sociology, geography, and poli-sci all wrapped into one!

My only complaint is that the roads and political boundaries are in bright red while natural features like rivers and lakes are the usual muted colors. This gives a feeling of stressful chaos on the page -- rightfully, I guess, if one wants to focus on humankind ... SO many roads -- but it can be hard to get a sense of the region with all that red shouting at me. I somehow hadn't expected these to visually overwhelm quite so much.

Personally would prefer that roads and borders were in black so color-coding altitude and water features took precedence. /shrug

Obviously, it's still a wonderfully thorough atlas.

This has the appearance of a comprehensive single-volume world atlas for young researchers, but a higher rating is not possible without knowing more about the sources of information used by the two authors (whose only claim to academia is that Lye "specializes in geographical subjects"). Timelines and "Quick Facts" seem useful, as do the glossary and two indexes, though the index of place names seems incomplete. Recommended purchase only to supplement more trusted reference atlases.

Has a lot of maps and facts and figures… as you would expect. My biggest complaint is the color selections make topographic information hard to see and blurs out some of the labeling. I think the Times Atlas is somewhat clearer.
