117 books112 followersBorn in 1976, Fabien Nury began his career by co-writing with Xavier Dorison the script of W.E.S.T (Dargaud), a hit series illustrated by Christian Rossi (six volumes between 2003 and 2011). Nury independently wrote Je suis Légion (2004-2007, Humanoids Associés), a trilogy illustrated by the American John Cassaday. Translated into eight languages, the series continues with several other illustrators under the title Les chroniques de Légion (Glénat). In 2007 he also started working on Le maître de Benson Gate (Dargaud) with Renaud Garreta. From 2007 to 2012, Nury wrote the script for the six volumes of Il était une fois en France (Glénat). The historical series, illustrated by Sylvain Vallée, received wide critical and public acclaim (850,000 copies sold). Amongst other achievements, in 2011 he received an award for best international series at the Angoulême Comics Festival. Since then Fabien Nury has been gaining success in various genres: Mort de Staline (The Death of Stalin, Dargaud/Europe Comics, forthcoming), in historical narrative; Steve Rowland, volume 5 of the XIII Mystery series (Dargaud, art by Richard Guérineau) in thriller; Corey Silas ( Glénat, art by Pierre Alary) in detective series; and Atar Gull (Dargaud, art by Brüno) in literary adaptation, based on the novel by Eugène Sue. With Tierry Robin he created the two-part series Mort au Tsar (Death to the Tsar, Dargaud/Europe Comics, 2015). In 2014, with Eric Henninot he also published Fils du soleil (Dargaud), an adventure album adapted from two novels by Jack London. As for audiovisual, Fabien Nury co-wrote with Dorison the scripts to a feature film Les brigades du Tigre (directed by Jérôme Cornuau, 2006) and a TV movie Pour toi, j'ai tué (directed by Laurent Heynemann, 2012).

September 16, 2021I am illiterate when it comes to graphic novels.
Naturally or unnaturally I read Asterix and Tintin as a child, but nothing else I can think of since then.
At the beginning of this book there is a warning that although based on actual events, it is a fiction. Mixing invention, interpretation and history. So this is a variety of historical novel.
The first few pages are dominated by a brown to red colour scheme. I wonder if this is a foreshadowing, because the story will end in "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Exe..., is an attempt to represent candlelight, or is the colour palate determined on technical or cost grounds?
Pages later, a scene set in a royal glasshouse, is this a comment on royalty - a species of hot house flower? Or the privileged exotic lives of members of royal families? Or is it simply a backdrop, or artistically pleasing to the illustrator?
I was interested in the topic of this series - the relationship between Charlotte of Belgium and Maximillan von Hapsburg and their tragi-comic opera Empire in Mexico following on from reading a biography of Charlotte's father Leopold I: de eerste koning van Europa. This obviously has far feweer words and noticeably more pictures. It nicely captures the letter writing habit of the Saxe-Coburg family, which is used subtly to avoid the info-dumping which is apparently inescapable on pages 56 to 61!
Judging from this photograph, Maximillan is hairier in the comic than in life, while Charlotte is given, (can I say literally in this context?), a conventionally comic book prettiness - with a little snub nose which she does not seem to have possessed in real life.
It is an interesting little story, though I suspect rather a lot of invention and interpretation.

Fabien Nury heeft al meesterwerkjes van de 9de kunst als 'Katanga' en 'Tyler Cross' geschreven terwijl Bonhomme bij mij vooral indruk maakte met het tekenwerk voor de schitterende western 'Texas Cowboys'.
Met de geschiedenis van Prinses Charlotte van België weten ze een boeiende, meeslepende, tragische strip vol grafische hoogstandjes af te leveren.
Een absolute topper.

As Americans we have heard, vaguely, of Emporer Maximilian of Mexico, but the whys and wherefore get shrouded in our history. Mexican, heck, world history, is not taught much to Americans, so it was refreshing to read this historical fiction of the life of Emporere Maximillion and his wife Charlotte.
For those that life palace entreage , this book has it in spades.
Charlotte starts out naive, but soon has to get up to speed, and when she does, she is ruthless.
I look forward to reading the next volume

Was anfangs wie eine glückliche Eheschließung erscheint, stürzt Charlotte bald in einen Albtraum. Diplomatien, Kriege und die ständige Unsicherheit machen ihr ebenso sehr zu schaffen wie die unerfüllte Hoffnung auf einen Erben. In der komplizierten Welt der Herrscher und Beherrschten muss Charlotte ihre Naivität ablegen und ihre Pläne schmieden – denn schon bald soll Mexico ihr gehören …
Historische Persönlichkeiten wie Charlotte von Belgien beziehungsweise später Carlota von Mexiko haben mich schon lange fasziniert, weshalb ich es sehr spannend fand, eine Graphic Novel über ihr Leben zu lesen. Das Werk von Fabien Nury und Matthieu Bonhomme hat mich vor allem durch die düsteren Farben und den opulenten Zeichenstil angezogen, der gut in die damalige Zeit hineinpasst.
Die Geschichte beginnt beim Kennenlernen Charlottes und Maximilians und der erste Part endet bei ihrer Krönung in Mexiko. Ihre Beziehung wird im Lauf der Zeit immer toxischer und artet in einen regelrechten Machtkampf im eigenen Heim aus, weshalb ich die Graphic Novel nur bedingt empfehlen würde, wenn man solche Themen nicht gut verträgt. Allerdings fand ich den Spannungsbogen gut gesetzt, auch wenn durch die vielen diplomatischen Themen manchmal gewisse Längen durch ausschweifende Erzählungen drin sind.
Charlotte als Charakter hat mir auch sehr gut gefallen und man hat auch einen neuen Blick auf Franz Joseph und Elisabeth erhalten, deren Beziehung nicht ins positive Licht gerückt wird. Für mich war auf jeden Fall viel Lernpotenzial in der Graphic Novel enthalten, und ich bin gespannt, wie Charlotte sich in weiteren Teilen entwickeln wird. Ihre zunehmende Stärke und die Intrigen und Pläne, die sie schmiedet, haben mich zumindest überzeugen können.
Was mir an manchen Stellen nicht unbedingt gefallen hat, war der Zeichenstil. Er ist zwar passend und schön gestaltet, aber vor allem die Schriften, wenn es an Briefkonversationen geht, sind wirklich schwer zu entziffern und haben einige Probleme bereitet. Da hätte man zugunsten der Lesbarkeit doch an Opulenz zurückschrauben sollen. Außerdem waren manche Panels sehr überladen und nicht wirklich angenehm anzusehen. Trotzdem war es eine interessante Lektüre, deren nächste Teile ich weiter verfolgen werde.

Sweet and idealistic, Charlotte is ill-prepared for the intrigues of Europe’s power players, a fact that become readily apparent soon after her marriage to Archduke Maximillian. Forced to sink or swim among the Austrian Hapsburgs, Charlotte is must learn to play the game by their rules or consign herself to life as an isolated political pawn.
Charlotte’s is a story that begs to be told and I loved how Nury and Bonhomme approached it. The book has a lot of emotional depth and I found the political dialogue neatly presented in the context of the heroine’s experiences. Charlotte’s character arc is beautifully rendered, Prince Philippe and Felix Eloin make superb supporting characters, and I was thoroughly impressed by the characterizations of the Count of Bombelles and Empress Elisabeth.
The artwork is a little old-fashioned for my tastes, but I enjoyed the time I spent with this book and can’t wait to see the rest of the story play out.

I really enjoyed this and at the beginning I had my doubts, I didn't know much about the history of Charlotte or Carlotta of Mexico as she became known, but I found this really interesting and wanting to learn more about her life. It begins with her meeting and marrying Maximilian as a young woman and through her marriage we watch her mature and have to grow up quickly. I found the art work a little reminiscent of the style of the 70s or early 80s but it was still very pretty and I will be reading the next volume.

Warnings: domestic abuse, violence, themes of war and colonialism
A well-written historical graphic novel, Empress Charlotte describes the beginnings of Princess Charlotte, who goes from belonging to the royal family in Brussels to the empress of Mexico. The story describes her courtship with the Archduke of Austria, a man who seems shady but because she finds a good companionship and friendship with him, agrees to marry. Ultimately, their marriage turns sour, and the ongoing power struggles in Europe have them relegated to house arrest in their own home. As her domestic situation worsens, she strikes out to gain more political leverage and pushes them into a position where they could have more freedom. The story is basically her journey from being an innocent young princess to a cunning political player, to survive in the tension-filled world of European monarchy. The story also goes a little into the political situation of Mexico at this point, the way the US civil war intersected with these political intrigues happening on its own and other continents.
The artwork is heavily monochromatic and relies on the lineart to provide details and shading, with the occasional moody lighting. The indoor scenes usually rendered in pale brick shades, and much of the story takes place via context narration, and letter contents. Sadly, the latter often employed cursive scripts, which made it hard on the eyes to read, especially on screens (I imagine it would be marginally better in print, though). The characters are drawn realistically, and expressions lend to explaining the mood well enough. Ultimately, though, it is satisfactory enough and the story compelling enough to make me excited about future installments in this series.

I knew the names Charlotte and Maximilian and that they were connected with Mexico somehow but that was it. This book made me interested in their story and eager for the next book in the series! The dialogue could be a bit exposition-y at times, but that's always a hazard when telling a true story. I absolutely adored the visuals and more than once got lost in a panel staring at Charlotte's outfit. Recommended to graphic novel-loving history buffs.

CARLOTA EMPERATRIZ: LA PRINCESA Y EL ARCHIDUQUE
Empiezo reseñando la serie de cómics o novelas gráficas que escribió el francés Fabien Nury y dibujó Bonhomme sobre la historia de la emperatriz Carlota de México. Me enteré hace unos meses que la editorial Norma había terminado de publicar toda esta saga en dos volúmenes completos y me animé a comprarlo. Ahora, habiéndose anunciado la nueva serie que prepara HBO Max sobre la emperatriz Carlota decidí reseñar este cómic que lo he ojeado ya casi en su totalidad.
Este primer volumen trata de los inicios de Carlota, quien pierde a su madre muy niña y posteriormente es cortejada por el archiduque Maximiliano de Austria. Al final ella se decanta por él, a pesar que tenía un compromiso con Portugal y ambos se casan en Austria. Allí tienen un recibimiento frío de parte del hermano de Max, el emperador Francisco José y su esposa Elizabeth. Siempre hubo un trato áspero y hasta soberbio de su hermano con Maximiliano. Luego son enviados a Italia para ser gobernadores de Lombardía - Venecia. Allí más entusiasmados construyen su castillo de Miramar para luego ser tentados con el Imperio de México. Durante su estancia hermanos de Carlota, escandalizados por el actuar disoluto de Maximiliano, envían un secretario Charles Éloin quien será a partir de ese entonces aliado de la pareja.
Se aborda este tema profundamente, pasando por el recibimiento que les da la pareja imperial francesa en París que fue mucho mejor que el del propio emperador austriaco y el volumen termina con ellos llegando a México.
Definitivamente me parece un buen cómic, los dibujos no son tan realistas pero los lugares y el ambiente está muy bien retratado. Como el autor menciona al inicio los hechos son históricos pero hay mucho de ficción e incluso algunos personajes ficticios. Esto se ve por momentos demasiado claro en algunos eventos que quizás nunca se pudieron comprobar o son exagerados por el autor, como la enfermedad de transmisión sexual que supuestamente tuvo Maximiliano y Carlota se entera inmediatamente, las juergas de Maximiliano con Bombelles y que los hermanos de Carlota le hayan dado su paliza sin ningún problema. Pero, en general, muy bien narrada y dibujada.

I really like the art style and the story line too. I liked the main character Charlotte and at the beginning I liked Maximilian but as the story progressed I didn’t. If he wasn’t in the story i might have continued. If you are a history-buff than I would suggest this graphic novel to you.

Ich kann es gar nicht oft genug erwähnen, wie sehr ich Geschichten liebe, in denen Geschichte und Fiktion zu einer ansprechenden Mixtur vermischt werden und dadurch historisches wieder zu neuem Leben erweckt wird. Das Gleiche lässt sich von dem wundervollen Comic »Kaiserin Charlotte – Die Prinzessin und der Erzherzog« von Fabien Nury und Matthieu Bonhomme behaupten.
»Sie sind wunderschön, wenn sie träumen. Von nun an kann ich sie nicht mehr ansehen, ohne zu hoffen… Vergeblich.«

Der französische Autor Fabien Nury hat einen geschickten Handlungsablauf erschaffen, bei dem sich die Spannung Stück für Stück aufbaut. Begonnen wird mit der Kindheit von Charlotte als einzige Tochter des König Leopold I. von Belgien. In einem behüteten Zuhause mit einem liebevollen Vater und Brüdern wächst Charlotte zu einem klugen Mädchen heran, dass ursprünglich den zukünftigen König Spaniens heiraten soll. Doch als die 16-jährige Charlotte den Erzherzog Maximilian von Österreich kennenlernt, verliebt sie sich in den romantischen Bruder des österreichischen Kaiser Franz Joseph.
Vollkommen unüblich für die damalige Zeit wird der Liebeshochzeit zwischen Charlotte und Maximilian zugestimmt und nach harten Verhandlungen um die Mitgift der reichen europäischen Prinzessin findet die Hochzeit statt.
Nury greift die historischen Ereignisse der Hochzeit, den Einzug in das Schloss Miramare und die Verbindung zu Napoleon Bonarparte sowie die Annahme der mexikanischen Krone auf. Dabei nimmt sich der Autor genügend Freiheiten heraus, sodass man sich als Leser nicht immer ganz sicher sein kann, was nun der Wahrheit und was der Fantasie entspricht. Von Maximilian wird ein eher unschönes Bild gezeichnet, denn nach der Hochzeit mit Charlotte erhält man nach und nach den Blick auf sein wahres Wesen, dass nicht viel mit dem romantischen Träumer zu Beginn der Geschichte gemein hat.
Der Geschichte wird von den hübschen Zeichnungen von Matthieu Bonhomme das Gewisse Etwas verliehen, die detaillierten Panels sind sozusagen das Salz in der Suppe. Besonders gut gefallen hat mir die Farbschemen im Verlauf der Geschichte, so konnte man alleine anhand der Farbgebung erkennen, ob es sich um eine ruhige, dramatische oder gar gefährliche Situation handelt. Verantwortlich für diese eindrückliche Farbkomposition ist Isabelle Merlet.

Der französische Autor Fabien Nury hat einen geschickten Handlungsablauf erschaffen, bei dem sich die Spannung Stück für Stück aufbaut. Begonnen wird mit der Kindheit von Charlotte als einzige Tochter des König Leopold I. von Belgien. In einem behüteten Zuhause mit einem liebevollen Vater und Brüdern wächst Charlotte zu einem klugen Mädchen heran, dass ursprünglich den zukünftigen König Spaniens heiraten soll. Doch als die 16-jährige Charlotte den Erzherzog Maximilian von Österreich kennenlernt, verliebt sie sich in den romantischen Bruder des österreichischen Kaiser Franz Joseph.
Vollkommen unüblich für die damalige Zeit wird der Liebeshochzeit zwischen Charlotte und Maximilian zugestimmt und nach harten Verhandlungen um die Mitgift der reichen europäischen Prinzessin findet die Hochzeit statt.
Nury greift die historischen Ereignisse der Hochzeit, den Einzug in das Schloss Miramare und die Verbindung zu Napoleon Bonarparte sowie die Annahme der mexikanischen Krone auf. Dabei nimmt sich der Autor genügend Freiheiten heraus, sodass man sich als Leser nicht immer ganz sicher sein kann, was nun der Wahrheit und was der Fantasie entspricht. Von Maximilian wird ein eher unschönes Bild gezeichnet, denn nach der Hochzeit mit Charlotte erhält man nach und nach den Blick auf sein wahres Wesen, dass nicht viel mit dem romantischen Träumer zu Beginn der Geschichte gemein hat.
Der Geschichte wird von den hübschen Zeichnungen von Matthieu Bonhomme das Gewisse Etwas verliehen, die detaillierten Panels sind sozusagen das Salz in der Suppe. What can I say, I'm always tempted by twisted Habsburg content. The first time I heard of Carlota of Mexico was actually during my visit to the empirial crypt in Vienna (a compulsory sight to see for historians and goths alike), where some previous visitor had lain down flowers at her grave, and I was intrigued enough to look her up. This BD masterly (if a bit conventionally) conveys the historical events that led her to the Mexican throne, but I was mostly delighted by the old-fashioned drawing style and colours. The cover gives a great example of the artists' skill and usage of shading, and I want more!

Empress Charlotte is an enjoyable historical graphic novel detailing life in the 1860s for European royalty. Our protagonist is a sheltered princess, daughter of Leopold the 1 of Belgium. The story follows her as she deals with her husband's shortcomings and travails within the political arena of not only Europe but the world.Story: Charlotte is drawn to one of her suitors: Maximillian, second son in the powerful Hapsburg dynasty. His direct and forthright manner appeals to her and soon a marriage is confirmed. But Maximillian lives in the shadow of his illustrious emperor brother - a brother who controls his fate completely. Without an heir and at the whim of Franz Joseph 1, Max and Charlotte are flung around the world - first to Venice as an Archduke position is granted and then eventually they will make their way to Mexico.
The story of Charlotte and Max is quite tragic but it is also a fascinating chapter in history; after all, it would be Max's brother who was instrumental in the domino effect that led to World War 1. But this novelization, which ends at the couple's move to Mexico, is all seen through Charlotte's eyes. She has a husband with faults - the 'diluted' end of the Hapsburgs, as he is called. And so she has to learn to maneuver the political landscape in order to make up for her husband.
The artwork reminds me of the clean work of 1940s - similar to Bazooka comics but with a serious subject matter. It's clean and bright but somewhat old fashioned.
In all, I love to read historical graphic novels. The author stays true to the facts but also creates characters and situations in order to flesh out the story. Charlotte may or may not have been as canny as presented; but it is a rewarding read all the same. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

I didn't know that this was based on actual events until I finished reading and did a quick google search. I am not a fan of toxic relationships and this story is just about that.
Princess Charlotte is sixteen years old when she starts to get courted by Max who is a snake in the grass. They get married and soon after all hell breaks loose. Max is a creep because he is 8 years older than her, probably just married her for some type of title, and when things get rough he drinks. Charlotte has no idea about politics and is foolish to marry a con man.
While the story and artwork were good, I couldn't get behind this due to the toxic relationship. Max is verbally abusive, a cheater, and a liar. I hope while in Mexico, Charlotte plans to leave him or something along the lines. I can't say for certain if she is plotting anything, but what I do know is I won't be reading more to find out.

J'apprécie toujours le travail de Fabien Nury, sa manière de prendre un sujet historique et d'en faire une histoire de fiction.
Le dessin de Matthieu Bonhomme est également agréable, subtil et adapté au récit.

Parmi les BD remarquées de la rentrée littéraire 2018, Charlotte impératrice offre une version à la fois romancée et historiquement documentée du destin de la jeune princesse belge qui, dans les années 1860, est propulsée avec son mari à la tête du Mexique. Un cadeau empoisonné.
Le premier tome de Charlotte impératrice, intitulé La princesse et l’archiduc, s’intéresse aux jeunes années de la princesse belge. Fille de Léopold Ier, souverain de la Belgique nouvellement indépendante, Charlotte naît à Bruxelles en 1840. Sa mère meurt alors qu’elle n’a que 10 ans. Son père et ses frères s’occupent alors de lui trouver un bon parti : ce sera l’archiduc Maximilien d’Autriche. Celui-ci est le frère cadet de l’Empereur François Joseph, le mari de Sissi. Une façon pour la dynastie belge de former une alliance avec les puissants Habsbourg. Mais Maximilien se révèle très vite une déception pour la jeune ambitieuse qu’est Charlotte.
Après un court passage à la Cour de Vienne, Charlotte et Maximilien sont envoyés à Venise, où Maximilien fait office de gouverneur. Le couple est néanmoins contraint de fuir la région en 1859 suite à la défaite de Solférino contre l’armée française. Réfugiée au château de Miramare à Trieste, Charlotte s’ennuie et souffre de disputes fréquentes avec son mari. Lorsque Napoléon III, dont l’armée occupe le Mexique, propose à Maximilien de devenir empereur de ce pays nouvellement indépendant, Charlotte y voit la possibilité d’un nouveau départ. Mais ce "cadeau" est loin d’être désintéressé. Comme le résume le personnage de Charlotte dans la BD (page 60) :
Bonaparte est malin : s'il peut se réconcilier avec les Habsbourg tout en allégeant son fardeau mexicain, il fera d'une pierre deux coups.
La situation du pays est en effet très instable. Le nouvel empereur du Mexique et sa femme prennent un grand risque en acceptant cette charge car Maximilien est alors contraint de renoncer à ses droits sur la couronne autrichienne.
Charlotte impératrice fait du personnage de Charlotte une jeune femme innocente qui s’aguerrit face aux épreuves et apprend peu à peu à manipuler son mari pour arriver à ses fins. Le scénario, très dynamique, donne la part belle aux confrontations et aux jeux de pouvoir. Les nombreux gros plans sur le visage de Charlotte permette une forte identification au personnage. Les dialogues sont globalement efficaces, même si le langage est loin de refléter la pudeur et la déférence propres au XIXe siècle.
Les faits historiques sont toutefois largement respectés et l’originalité de l’album tient dans l’intégration très réussie de plusieurs passages de la correspondance entre Charlotte et son père. L’ajout de personnages fictifs permet par ailleurs de donner plus de relief aux personnages principaux,bien réels. La scène lors de laquelle le conseiller Eloin explique la situation mexicaine à Charlotte et à Maximilien est ainsi bien menée. Didactique, elle permet au lecteur de comprendre à la fois le contexte historique et les enjeux dramatiques pour les personnages.
Un bon moment de lecture et d’histoire qui donne envie de lire le tome 2, encore à paraître.

Als ich diesen Comic sah, war ich einfach nur baff, denn er erzählte die Geschichte der wirklichen Charlotte von Belgien. Ich hielt somit ein geschichtsträchtiges Buch in Händen, das ihre Geschichte auf moderne Art und Weise erzählte. Schon das Cover konnte mich begeistern, da es nicht nur eine stolze junge Frau zeigte, sondern auch eine Zeichnung die an Details und Facetten mir förmlich den Atem raubte.
Bevor ich den Comic las, saugte ich erst einmal alles über Charlotte auf. Immerhin spiegelte der Comic ihre Geschichte und da wollte ich nicht ohne Vorkenntnisse herangehen. Da mich die Neugier jedoch packte, schnappte ich mir das Buch und las, und las, und las. Ich konnte nicht mehr aufhören, denn das Leben der Prinzessin, die im Buch zur Kaiserin wurde, war packend und sehr emotional.
Der Stil der Zeichnungen und die Farbauswahl passten aus meiner Sicht perfekt zu der Story, denn man verzichtete auch kräftige und lebendige Farben und nutzte eher die dunkleren Nuancen von ihnen. Selbst ein Kerzen-gelb wirkte dadurch düster, auch wenn es ja eigentlich Licht spenden sollte. Da man es hier aber nicht mit einer Komödie, sondern mit einer tragischen Liebe und finsteren Machenschaften zutun hatte, wirkte alles sehr stimmig.
Die Geschichte an sich wurde jedoch sehr lebendig erzählt und offenbarte in so manchem Gesichtsausdruck eine Unmenge an Gefühlen. Charlotte ist dabei stets im Mittelpunkt und fasziniert mit ihrem freundlichen und natürlichen Auftreten. Als sich dann aber ihre Welt wandelt, durfte ich auch bei ihr einen Wandel bemerken, der sie mir jedoch nur noch sympathischer machte. Hatte man anfangs noch ein Mädchen vor sich, war sie am Ende eine gestandene Frau, die mit ihrem Mut und ihrer Intelligenz mehr als beeindruckte. Am bemerkenswerten war jedoch der Umstand, das ich als nicht gerade geschichtlich-bewandte Person, etwas lernte und dabei Freude hatte. Es machte einfach Spaß etwas über das Zeitalter, seine Gepflogenheiten und seine Ansichten zu erfahren.
Da dies nur der erste Band vom Leben Charlotte´s war, hoffe ich doch sehr, dass auch der nächste Band so beeindruckend wird.

This is book one in a series which is a fictional retelling of the story of Carlota of Mexico.
Princess Charlotte was the only daughter of Leopold I, King of Belgium, by his second wife, Louise of Orléans. At the age of 16 she is courted by Archduke Maximilian of the House of Habsburg and they get married. At first they are happy but the marriage becomes increasingly unhappy as problems begin to develop in Maximilian's political life. Charlotte's family eventually intervene and try to help her but the marriage never returns to the happier early days.
Then an opportunity arises. When Charlotte realises that there is a chance she and her husband could be sent to Mexico as emperor and empress she does all that she can to make sure those plans succeed because she thinks that becoming Empress of Mexico will help save and strengthen her relationship with Maximilian, and give her freedom from the political restrictions that have been placed on their lives.
This first book focuses on her courtship and marriage to the Archduke and how things suddenly become quite joyless. Charlotte is isolated and neglected by the Archduke but she survives these difficulties with the help of her family. When Mexico beckons her family are against the idea but Charlotte yearns for this unknown land and a new beginning.
This is an interesting story and it is really well drawn and told in an engaging way. Charlotte isnt a familiar historical figure for me and so this was an opportunity to learn more. It is a very interesting story of politics, manipulation and colonisation.
Charlotte is actually quite a strong woman who learns how to survive at a time when women had very few rights of their own. She manages to respond to personal and political difficulties in a world of political intrigue and manipulation, and she subverts circumstances in order to get what she wants. This gave me a taste of this historical episode in the history of Europe and of Mexico and I wanted to know more about the factual history after reading this.
Great art and a fascinating story.

Charlotte est la fille de Leopold Ier, roi des Belges. Celui-ci cherche à la marier à un prétendant adéquat: l'héritier de la couronne du Portugal ou l'archiduc Maximilien d'Autriche. C'est le dernier qui séduit Charlotte et en 1857 leur union est célébrée. Malheureusement, ce qui ressemblait par tous les aspects à un mariage heureux se transforme vite en calvaire pour la princesse belge. En effet, Maximilien cache bien son jeu et derrière la façade de sa personnalité se cachent des traits de caractère faibles et odieux. De plus, l'archiduc est traité comme un incapable par le reste de sa famille qui le relaie à des rôles secondaires. Alors qu'il obtient enfin un poste digne de ce nom en tant que gouverneur dans une province d'Italie, il est est chassé et assigné à résidence suite aux combats qui se déroulent sous l'influence de Napoléon III face aux autrichiens. Charlotte suit son époux qui montre sa face cachée dans son malheur alors qu'ils sont coincés sans but autre qu'attendre. Alors lorsque Maximilien se voit proposé le trône du Mexique, Charlotte y voit une opportunité pour mettre fin à son enfer et ce malgré tous les problèmes soulevés. Mieux vaut le soleil et l'instabilité du Mexique plutôt que de rester dans la même situation avec un époux dont elle regrette amèrement l'union.

Probablement une série qui fera date.

Monarchy has many flaws, and not least is its impact on the actual royals, who are shown here as trapped in a gilded cage of privilege. Maximilian is a womaniser who is sterile because of venereal disease. Napoleon III is a sleazebag. Charlotte is rather obviously a Princess Di figure in this story, though history suggests that she was more assertive. The characterisation is a little stiff but you always know who is who.
Speaking of history, the story here has some serious omissions. It is implied that Maximilian’s term as viceroy of northern Italy was ended by the Battle of Solferino in 1859, which kicked the Hapsburgs out of Lombardy and Venice, but in fact he had been sacked by his brother two months earlier for being too liberal. Also historically Maximilian spent an awful lot of time pursuing his personal interests in Brazil, leaving Charlotte stranded on Madeira, and that simply isn’t mentioned here.
I don’t think I’ll bother with the rest; Charlotte is a tragic historical figure, but in the end her story is marginal to the real sweep of history, and while it’s OK not to let the facts get in the way of a good story, it’s important not to get too far away from them if you’re telling a historical tale.

Carlota and Maximiliano. Two very controversial characters in the history of Mexico. With historical fiction one can have very human assumptions of their motivation behind the choices that led to a very tragic development (spoilers). Saddly the story of this first volume ends just as Maximiliano and Carlota "choose" to move to Mexico to fight a war that didn't belong to them.
The art is very Europe - traditional, with ink coloring that reminds me of Tintin comics and character design that can feel at home in any comic from that time. It is... A choice. A choice that curiously works and makes it seem older than it is.
On the same note the arrangement on the page is squared and stiff (yes the page is squared but you can do much more than fill it with smaller squares and rectangles), point being, we all know this story is going to end terribly bad. The arrangement makes it feel inevitable. We are watching, developments set on stone.
Each panel might as well be a tombstone yet to be placed.
Yet.
There are a lot of players behind their lives. And each of them get only a glimpse. Except for Carlota's Father, the other would be antagonists, like Maximilian's brother, Napoleon III and Benito Juarez are only shown as shadows, silhouettes or just a part of their bodies.
If there is a flaw on this work is the lack of defined antagonists as they are brushed over for the smaller royal dramas in their lives.
On it's favor. It is well documented, filling most of the story with quotes from her letters and those around them.
I just want to read the Mexico part already. But... I am not sure that side is as well documented from what I saw in the fashion of this first issue. But that is for when I find the second book.

Une biographie de femme très intéressante sous forme de BD qui raconte l'histoire de Charlotte de Belgique, qui sera notamment impératrice du Mexique pendant 2 ans. Le scénario montre bien le statut de la femme à l'époque (on voit la maltraitance dont est victime Charlotte, la froideur et le mépris de son mari qui ne l'a séduite que pour son titre et sa dote, son mariage qu'elle a idéalisé et qui se révèle être une prison dorée), et rend d'autant plus remarquable le caractère de Charlotte qui décide de tirer parti autant qu'elle le peut de la situation et de jouer un rôle actif, loin de se contenter d'être une épouse discrète et effacée.
J'ai bien aimé les dessins et je trouve la mise en couleur très réussie : il y a un vrai parti pris graphique à ce niveau qui donne à l'ensemble un caractère original.
Seul regret, j'ai trouvé dommage qu'il n'y ait pas une note historique à la fin pour présenter, même de manière succincte, les biographies des différents personnages. Il n'est par exemple pas du tout explicité au début de l'histoire qui est "Charlotte" (on comprend qu'elle appartient à une famille noble, mais j'ai dû faire des recherches pour comprendre qu'il s'agit de Charlotte de Belgique). J'aurais bien aimé savoir à quel point certaines scènes / certains personnages sont romancés pour les besoins de l'histoire, et avoir quelques éléments de contexte historiques permettraient d'apprécier d'autant plus l'histoire et les personnages.

'Empress Charlotte: The Princess and the Archduke' by Fabien Nury with art by Matthieu Bonhomme is a historical fiction graphic novel set in the time of the Habsburgs.
Princess Charlotte loses her mother when she is young. When she is 16, she is sent out courting for a favorable marriage. She falls in love with archduke Maximillian of the Habsburg house. Charlotte doesn't realize that her new husband is on the outs with his family. They end up in Italy, and the marriage has its problems, including trying to provide an heir. When Maximillian is put on house arrest by his family, and things take a dire turn, Charlotte finds help with her family and the strength to take hold of her destiny.
I liked this story of royals from another era. My favorite part is when Charlotte's family fears for her life and comes in to take charge. I liked the art in this book. I occasionally struggled with reading some of the lettering in letters between Charlotte and her father.

Bonjour les lecteurs ...
Une BD a l'honneur aujourd'hui.
Charlotte, princesse de Belgique, épouse l'archiduc Maximilien d'Autriche, frère de l'Empereur.
L'union qui avait débuté sous les meilleurs auspices, va très vite s'effilocher.
Maximilien révèle très vite sa véritable personnalité. Celui-ci étant peu considéré par son frère ( et la terrible Sissi), en plus de la déprime qui le ronge, il tombe dans la luxure.
Pauvre Charlotte !!!
Quand, pour servir de tampon entre les rivalités de l'Empereur et de Napoléon III, on propose à Maximilien de devenir Empereur du Mexique, Charlotte y voit une échappatoire et le pousse à accepter.
Voici un premier tome rondement mené et qui donne envie de découvrir la suite des aventures de Charlotte ( qui, comme on le sait , se termineront de façon tragique ).
Les dessins sont très bien réalisés et les couleurs judicieusement choisies. Les dialogues ne manquent pas de piquant.
