I know it was said that this comic was not canon, but it feels pretty canon to me. The future Marceline losing memories story (#1-#4) has things that doesn’t make sense, but the Bubbline moments are pretty sweet. And both immortals, huh? The humantown story is short, but I like the little heart-to-heart conversation between PB and Finn, like PB acknowledging her coping mechanism is not healthy and she tries to be a better leader. I think it’s in tune with the TV series. As for Finn, he tries to figure out what home is and learns the wisdom from Huntress Wizard is a good touch.
I absolutely adore Adventure Time. I’ve been sitting on this graphic novel for quite some time. And it’s cute, and everything I could ask for with adventure. 🖤🖤
Of the various tie-in comics in the Adventure Time expanded universe, I think the most effective are the spin-off miniseries, often focusing on fan favorite characters who have a relatively limited time in the show itself, and tying them more directly to the events of the show as it began wrapping up its bittersweet run in 2018.
Season 11, written by Sonny Liew and illustrated by Marina Julia, for instance, continues the series' strong replication of the TV show's voice and style while also bringing some unique ideas as well. This miniseries does a great job tying up some of the last hanging plot threads from the show’s last season in an affirming and satisfying way, and really concluded the Adventure Time comics line on a positive, fulfilling note.
Adventure Time: Season 11 is the semi-canon follow-up to the series finale. The structure was weird, because the first 4 issues focus on one plot and the last 2 on another completely different one. Despite that, I have to say I enjoyed both plots. The first plotline focuses on a version of Marceline in a distant future. There were some cute scenes there of Marcy and Bonnie, so a big win for me. The second plotline focuses on Finn's redefining the concept of home after losing the tree house. There were some highlights here: first, the talk between Finn and Bonnie because it showcased how much she has grown throughout the series; next, the appearance of Huntress Wizard again, since I have just finished the Fionna and Cake series and I can't be more smitten with her character; and finally, the building relationship of Finn and Minerva, which makes my heart literally ache for him but I still find so sweet. Overall, a nice read and addition to the comics of this fantastic world.
I've been a huge Adventure Time fan since the start of the series. I have felt as though I have grown up alongside Finn, although he grew up much more slowly than I did. Regardless, I could always relate to his personal struggles and enjoyed seeing him figure himself and the world out against the backdrop of such a fantastical land such as Ooo. I'm glad that the series is continuing in comic format, and I am excited to see what topic/themes the comic ends up exploring. In volume 1 of Adventure Time season 11, a few of the ideas that are hinted at in the series finale are already being fleshed out, and I can't wait for more canon information to add to the world-building of this beloved universe.
Solid overall, but I'd say the last bit involving Humantown actually advances the story from the show a bit and was by far the best part if a bit predictable. The preceding story was also good, but I feel like the comics tend to jump around in time an awful lot and it starts to feel like its happening to avoid getting in the way of proper development for the current timeline. I'm far from being caught up on the comic run, so maybe this doesn't happen as much as I feel like it does, but I remember a ton of visits to future timelines taking up entire arcs when I was reading it (I still enjoyed them! But, I'm just saying...).
Anyway, the writing otherwise was top notch, the stories were still cool, and the art excellent! So, a fun volume all around notwithstanding time shenanigans.
An algebraic & fun read! Only real downside is its NOT quite Season 11, as Adam Muto himself has dismissed its official canon status and no-one from the show has worked on this mini-series. Not gonna lie, that's a bit of a damper really...especially if anyone was expecting more Adventure Time. There have been lots of great Adventure Time comics in the past, and the canon status has always been ambiguous. The best way to enjoy this would be without the math OR to think of it as a fanfic published by BOOM.
It's been so long since I've watched Adventure Time closely. I'm multiple seasons behind though I did watch the finale. More importantly, this is set after the finale with enough context clues to catch you up if you didn't watch it.
I really enjoyed the story where Finn contemplates about the meaning of home and where he belongs. His slang kept taking me out a bit, but I remember when Finn used to say "mathematical" or "algebraic," so I'm not familiar with his newer lingo. I also like Marceline's development. She's gotten way more mature than when she first started out.
I forgot how much I missed Adventure Time after it ended, and this comic is a perfect continuation of events, post-finale. You really see a more grown-up and mature Finn...AND CANON BUBBLINE AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Yeah, it’s really good. It felt almost like another eight-parter episode from the later seasons, followed by another two-parter to close it all up. It maintains the tone of the show well and doesn’t detract from the closure given in the finale.
