This was good, but both the H and h got on my nerves at times, as they could both be pretty childish, and given to storming out in anger (the H), running away when things get tough (the h) and sulking like a kid (both). Ironically, they take two trips to Paris and both times their sulky behavior (first hers, then his) spoiled what could have been a lot of fun and romance in that City of Love.
This book is one of the exceptions where I can understand the h not telling the H about their son, because his vehement declaration that he did NOT want children was what blew up their engagement (as well as his ridiculous claims that she only wanted him for "stud service"), and how could she tell him later on that she was pregnant? She was afraid he'd either refuse to acknowledge it, try to talk her into an abortion, or take responsibility but resent her and the baby. It wasn't the usual case of the h being hurt and angry over something (usually thinking the H cheated) then keeping the baby a secret out of misguided emotions.
I also give this h credit for getting introspective at times and thinking about the H's feelings, trying to see things from his POV, not just her own. Too often an h is stuck in "ME" mode, only thinking of how she's feeling, as if the H hasn't any feelings at all. That wasn't the case here.
I felt sorry for the OM; he was a nice guy who deserved a better fate. I can understand the h turning to him, but I don't think she should have accepted his proposal, knowing he was in love with her while she only thought of him as a brother. If he hadn't had all those health problems, he would have been cheated out of a normal marriage, as the h wanted no one but the H and wouldn't have wanted to make love with the OM, husband or not.
The H had a lot of issues, stemming from his unhappy childhood (and a vindictive bitch of a mother), but had he confided in his aunt, he would have learned the whole story and had a different outlook, and he and the h wouldn't have had four miserable years apart, while she took care of an ailing "husband", then struggled as a single parent, and he threw himself into his work and had meaningless affairs.
However, the H shouldn't have been surprised that the h left him, after his tirade about her not loving him enough, thinking more of having children than about him, wanting to use him to get pregnant, and a whole lot of other stuff, then storming out of the apartment without a word, giving the distinct impression he never wanted to see her again. Later, he told the h how hurt, angry and miserable he was when he came back and found she had packed up and left, but did he really expect her to be waiting for him with open arms??? Come on!!
Also, he claimed he looked for her but couldn't find her (she had been staying with the OM, having nowhere else to go), but with all his money/connections (and her not being all that far away), I don't think he was looking all that hard, otherwise I think he would have found her a lot sooner.
When he finally does, he goes in revenge mode, but it was more a case of the bark being worse than the bite.
There's no OW, just several women mentioned as casual bed partners, which was enough to make the h jealous, while he was jealous of her feelings for the OM.
They waste too much time hiding their feelings, saying hurtful things, and each thinking the other doesn't love them, and at times you just want to shake them both and rattle all their teeth! But their son is adorable and the Irish lady who takes care of him is an entertaining character!
It's a flawed story, but still a good one.
