All you need is less: eine Kultur des Genug aus ökonomischer und buddhistischer Sicht
Achtsamkeit und Nachhaltigkeit sind zu Modebegriffen geworden. Sie sind aber ebenso zentrale Pfeiler der aktuellen Suffizienz-Bewegung und der jahrtausendealten Lehre des Buddha.

A Welcome Debate
Would somebody call the police? We have two degrowthers here who are coming to blows in the same book. The degrowthers are Manfred Folkers and Niko Paech, who each write two lengthy book-halves. These halves are book-ended by two interviews with the authors—conducted by a very capable, in fact sparkling Barthel Pester.
NOTE: While the title of this book is in English, the text is in German. Academic German. The (loose) translations are my own ...
Our current growth culture is headed for disaster. We are accelerating into a dead end. The solution to this is, of course, collective action. No, it's not. Well, we need to criticise the system at any rate. No, we don’t. OK, here’s the real problem ... No, that’s not it. But can we approach this consensually? Heavens, no. Hey, we should meditate on it. No, we need to find a pub.
Is there anything that the authors agree upon? Well, yes. They had to agree on the title of the book. It says that we need to make do with less—or to put it more positively, we need to be content with enough. Co-author Manfred Folkers sums it up at the end of the book: ‘For Niko, sufficiency is an economic theory of enough. For me, the result of a mindful life is a culture of enough.’
I had two reservations, as I read the book.
Firstly, ‘Many poor people,’ writes Folkers, ‘are accustomed to consumption-avoidance. In fact, they could serve as examples to us.’ Paech adds, ‘One ought not to drive them to an ecologically ruinous catch-up.’ Living in Africa myself, I wondered whether this might not be superficial, perhaps unkind. All in all, the poor, and their place in the big picture, are barely discussed.
Secondly, both authors are dismissive of finding a solution in science or technology. They close with a quote by Ernst Schumacher: ‘Each of us can work towards getting our inner house in order. We won’t find the direction we need in science or technology.’ In my own work, I emphasise the need to understand exactly why science and technology fail us. This requires that we focus on them.
I do not grasp why some have given this book the low ratings that they have. What is it that people were looking for? Perhaps they were looking for answers. What this book offers is a very good debate. Society is in trouble. Politics is in trouble. The debate itself is in trouble: ‘Nobody sees through things any more.’ Isn’t this the kind of discussion we want?

1. Vorgespräch
2. Manfred Folkers: Buddhistische Motive für eine Überwindung der Gier-Wirtschaft
3. Suffizienz als Antithese zur modernen Wachstumsorientierung
4. Nachgespräch
Die Autoren verwenden 'Gier-Wirtschaft' und 'Wachstumsorientierung' als Ihre Bezeichnung für die Marktwirtschaft.
Die Bewältigung des Klimawandels ist sicherlich ein wichtiges und 'alternativloses' Thema - dieses Buch trägt nach meiner persönlichen Auffassung nur sehr wenig dazu bei:
a) Ich mag die Marktwirtschaft nicht verteidigen (bzw. wäre diesbezüglich neutral) aber jedem mitdenkenden Leser ist klar, dass auch planwirtschaftliche Systeme kräftigst zum Klimawandel beigetragen haben und dass die (hoffentliche) Bewältigung des Klimawandels eine Kompination aus Verboten, Selbstbeschränkungen, technischer Innovation (als Wunschdenken) und Lenkungsabgaben sein könnte.
b) Die Ausflüge bzw. Querbezüge zum Buddhismus waren für mich als Leser nicht bereichernd und störten eher den möglichen Gedanken- und Lesefluss.
c) Das Werk ist mehr oder weniger frei von jeglichen konkreten Handlungsempfehlungen
Aus meiner bisherigen Lektüre würde ich zum Thema Klimawandel Werke empfehlen wie:
Axel Berg: Energiewende einfach durchsetzen: Roadmap für die nächsten 10 Jahre
Paul Hawken: Drawdown - Der Plan
Marcel Häggi: Null Öl, Null Gas, Null Kohle. (als Initiative für die Schweiz)

Diese vielversprechende Synthese hätte Besseres verdient als den gespreizten Stil und ständig erhobenen Zeigefinger.
