Midnight Hero by Diana Duncan is a Silhouette Intimate Moments novel. This a romantic suspense novel published in 2005.
Conall O'Roarke decides to pop the question to Bailey on New Years Eve. But before he has the chance, she blindsides him by telling him they have to break up. When things started to get serious between them, Bailey gets a case of nerves. Her father had been a firefighter that died in the line of duty. Bailey's mother had become cold, bitter and controlling. Bailey was afraid that if she stayed with Con their relationship would end up like her parent's did.
Con is a member of SWAT, so he puts his life on the line all the time. Bailey doesn't think that she can handle that.
But, when the bank located in the mall where Bailey works is robbed and the mall goes on lockdown, Bailey finds out Col is in the mall too. They must work together to survive and hopefully save their friends being held hostage in the bank.
I loved Col!! He was not the overbearing Alpha Male, but was confident, strong, and rock solid.
Bailey at times was just a little too sugary. But, I have often wondered if I could handle being married to guy that had that type of a job. It would be hard, and I don't know if I could live with the fear on a daily basis. So, I could understand why Bailey got a case of the nerves.
Once Col found himself in the position Bailey was in, he understood her feelings. Bailey on the other hand learned what Col experienced in his job.
The dialogue was a little corny and sappy at times. But, I like a story that moves constantly, and this one stayed on track. There were a few side dramas that seemes a little too improbable, like Col thinking one of the robbers was someone who had a connection with his late father.
But, it did make for an interesting little side drama.
In the end Col and Bailey come to terms with their differences and know that they will be able to survive his job. HEA! Sigh!
Overall a B-/C+

Midnight Hero was an awesome ride filled with action, danger and a couple who loved each other.

Con is a SWAT officer, and for the new year's is planning to pop the question and go to bed with his girlfriend Bailey who he has been dating for six-months. He adores Bailey, she is different than all the women he has known. When he goes to meet her in the morning he can sense something is wrong, Bailey seems upset.
Bailey tells Con that though she loves him they can't see each other anymore since she fears they will come to hate each other later. Bailey is still shaken by the news she saw of a SWAT officer dying plus her mother who has been undermining their relationship from the start. Con tries to argue with her but knows she is upset currently and lets her run.

Bailey considers herself to be quiet. I liked her despite her fears, her parents were polar opposites when they fell in love and were happy until her fire-fighter father got injured on the job and went back. Her mother couldn't take that so they fought a lot, and then the day he died a hero, her mother told him she'll leave him. That fourteen year old Bailey is still scarred, she never got to grieve properly since her mother became cold and over-protective after his death. Though Bailey got out she never confronted those fears, and that has kept her relationship with Con progressing to the next step. She believes that Con deserves better.

But Con doesn't, he knows that the fear is winning over her and comes to her work-place and even tells her he will take a desk job since she comes first. I went wooh so romantic. But then the mall Bailey works in is taken over by robbers and hence begins a absolute action packed-ride where Bailey comes to over-come her fears and pitch in and realize that despite being a pacifist there are moments in life where violence becomes necessary, she sees Con in his element and that is a shock and adjustment.

I loved seeing Bailey see how strong she is, the way Con saw her. I absolutely loved Con's brothers as well and will be reading about them.

Rating 4.5

I had mixed feelings about this book. The action and suspense were non-stop when Con and Bailey were trapped in a mall on a stormy New Year's Eve. Bank robbers had taken hostages, who were friends of Bailey's, so she wanted to save them but, being a pacifist, she couldn't figure out how to do that. Luckily her boyfriend, Con, was a SWAT officer and he had a plan - several of them actually. Even though Bailey had never been in a situation remotely like this, she wanted to help Con. All the reading she'd done sure paid off. She came up with lots of ideas that helped with his plans. They worked together outsmarting the bank robbers.

I found this book very slow for the first half so I thought it was a 3 star read. Then it got pretty exciting for the last half so it went up half a star. But the end slowed down again bringing it back to 3 stars. I didn't like Bailey at all in the beginning. I understood that she thought Con's job was too dangerous so she wanted to break up with him but, I didn't like it. But when they were trapped in a mall with bank robbers she got a little stronger and I liked her much more.

I am clearly in the minority with my rating so if you enjoy quiet romances, suspense and HEA, you should give this book a try.

A sweet short read. The complete book is about 24 hours.... the h is a librarian, but she puts Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible to shame... I hope if I ever get assaulted by thugs, the SWAT-Team will act faster....

UGH

Just way too much sexual innuendo for me. On and on ad nauseam. Seemed a little out of place for the situation. I understand that as stressful as it was, the characters might need to decompress, but come on! Just not for me.

Low 3

The high suspense opening is chopped from significantly later in the book. That's a trick I'm not a fan of, as it gives me details and expectations that keep things from developing naturally. Plus, as is the case here, it often covers a slow start.

4 stars — After rereading book 2 in this series, I *had* to go back and reread the first one. There’s something about the whole premise of being trapped in a mall, trying to foil bad guys that just appeals to me. And I almost wonder if I enjoyed it even more the second time around, but since I didn’t write an initial review, I guess I’ll never know. Either way, this was just entertaining.

Obviously you can tell I enjoyed the action plot — I mean, the evil guys are super evil, there’s a lot of little action/suspense moments riddled throughout, not just the big one at the end. You get to watch Con and Bailey’s relationship grow and shift as they struggle through this crisis together. And I loved the bizarre and ingenious solutions they come up with to different problems — from makeshift weapons, to ways to communicate, to ways to survive. I have no idea how realistic they are, but they felt realistic, you know?

Bailey is a pretty easy to like heroine for me. You can tell she has damage, and it’s frustrating, but you know deep down she’s a good person and she doesn’t want to hurt anyone…she’s just letting her fear overcome her. And wow, when she gets sassy, she gets sassy!

And then there’s Conall…damn, that is a hero for me. I absolutely loved how he wasn’t a SWAT stereotype. He definitely had a hero complex to a degree, but he wasn’t all aggressive and alpha and all that shiznit. He was that perfect balance of alpha and beta. He was confident, sexily proficient at his job, had wonderful control…but he was also very tender hearted, romantic, sweet, passionate. I loved that in him we see a hero who can be both.

And the two of them together were really intriguing. I loved how they tried to help each other become better, how even though they struggled, they had the best intentions. And they were pretty hot together too. I also loved their playful banter, it made me giggle.

About the only thing I was less a fan of was sometimes the writing would get a bit long and drawn out — especially during internal monologues. When Bailey was trying to analyze things, I kinda wanted to skim, and probably did to a degree. The pacing just slowed down from time to time.

So yeah. An odd book to read during a Canadian “heat wave”, but definitely the reading pick me up I was looking for.

If I'm honest this was unexpectedly good.

I can't say that I was all that enamored with our heroine, book worm Bailey doesn't think she can handle staying with her SWAT boyfriend any longer due to the dangers of his job.
She's a little dramatic with her reasoning, harboring on about what happened to her parents' relationship, her fireman father's injury and then death. She was also a little contradictory throughout; when the mall where her book shop is gets closed down due to weather, some bank robbers take the opportunity to nab some cash from the bank inside; one minute she's dodging robbers, making acetone water pistols and being a bit a bad-ass, the next she's zoning out and thinking about whether or not she should have sex with Con.
Haha, no joke. I guess when you're in a life and death situation you may get a little randy with the adrenaline... *shrug*

I actually liked the 'robbing' part of this, that was one well-stocked mall too thankfully! A little bit of absolutely everything they needed!

Con not only doesn't want to break up with Bailey, but he had planned to propose. Unwilling to just walk away, he shows up at her work wanting to discuss their relationship further, I tell you what, without him Bailey would have ended up dead for sure, but she certainly proved herself during the robbery from time to time and of course changed her tune by the end.

Cute intro's to his brothers who are all SWAT as well, I'm assuming they star in the rest of this series and I enjoyed this enough to def check them out.

I found a series to binge at the start of 2020!!! This series is about four O'Rourke brothers who are all part of a SWAT team.

First up is Conall. He is all set to propose to his woman when she cuts him off and breaks up with him. See they both lost a parent who were both civil servant employees. One a cop and one a fireman. The loss affected them and their families differently. Con and his brothers all wanted to fight for the innocent, bring to justice the bad guys. Bailey, after watching her mother become hardened and cold after her father's death was to scared ever love anyone again that had a dangerous job because it was too painful to live with if they didn't come home. So even though she loves Con she decides he deserves a stronger woman than her.

Well New Year's Eve throws their lives into chaos when the Mall that Bailey works at is taken over by armed gunmen who are robbing the bank. Things get crazy – think Die Hard – and Con and Bailey both do their best to stay alive and outwit the bad guys..

Great characters, a story full action and suspense and a good romance made this an enjoyable read..

"He sauntered down the opposite side of the corridor, exuding strength and command. The planes of his handsome face were cast in granite, his powerful muscles tense, that lean, graceful body on alert. Steel-clad resolve glinted in sharp mahogany eyes. His taut jaw worked rhythmically -- chewing gum. Her warrior, in full battle mode."

Be still my heart! By the time I got to this excerpt toward the end of Survive the Night, I was enthralled by Con, the hero that's being described here. The author had done such an awesome job bringing all the characters to life on the pages, but this character in particular was bigger than life. I could see every detail of him sauntering down that hallway, and wow, there was no doubt in my mind he could handle the situation, even though it seemed impossible they would survive.

This is a new author for me and the first book of hers I've read, but it won't be the last! I highly recommend this book, but take a deep breath before diving in!

I forced myself to read the first chapters entirely, but the story was slow moving. I believe this in part because the story was too wordy and kind of boring. Plus, like other reviewers have mentioned, Bailey is a PACIFIST and Con is a SWAT OFFICER. Why did she date him in the first place?!? Slight spoiler...there was a point when she witnessed Con get into a pretty brutal fight and flinched when he tried to help her after...lady he just saved your life. I have no clue how she thought Con was getting to save the day without throwing a few blows. She constantly questioned him, as if this wasn't what he did for a living.
I hate leaving bad reviews but Bailey really ruined the book for me.

This one took me a couple of months to read. It was easy to put down and hard to pick back up again. The plot was so drawn out, that despite being an action story, it was pretty much predictable and a little boring.

I continued to read through until the end to see if the storyline got any better, but alas I was disappointed.

Bailey the conflicted female lead in the story has hooked up with a SWAT officer and is now having second doubts due to the danger involved in her role. They both find themselves in a hostage situation caught in a storm and fight against time to win against the bad guys.

I like the storylines a little more fast paced than this book provided.

A masterpiece of writing.

Diana Duncan is one of a few authors who I will buy without knowing what the book is about. I have never been disappointed. In Survive the Night, the story and characters are believable. This book has adrenaline rush, tense moments, love and sacrifice. Not so mush as to sear the sheets, but enough to heat the Night. I recommend Diana Duncan s book to all who love a well written story, that is worth re reading time and time again.

Conall and Bailey

WOW! This is an action packed novel! Trapped in a Mall during the Holiday Season with bank robbers, the reader has an emotionally charged story. Con and Bailey make quite a team as they dodge danger and mayhem using their wits, know how, understanding of the Mall, and wisdom to overcome a bad situation and literally come out alive! An adventure that will keep the reader's attention and interest!

I thought the plot was really good - being stranded in a mall with bank robbers, using what you find in mall shops to defend yourself. The tension between the male and female love interests was realistic enough to be believable. However, the actual writing just didn't gel for me. It wasn't stilted or formulaic but I didn't 'feel' it (wish I had better editorial skills to be able to put my finger on what was 'missing' as I really feel like this story could be great).

This was a terrific suspense story with a heroic, swoon-worthy hero and a smart and sexy heroine. Trapped in a mall overnight with hostages taken during a bank robbery, Connall and Bailey have to work together to survive. Con is used to situations like this as he is a member of a SWAT team, but Bailey is more out of her element. This was a thoroughly enjoyable story and an excellent start to a romance suspense series.

Too Much!

Bailey is a pacifist dating a SWAT officer, Con. How could that not be a problem? So, she comes across as whiny, wishy-washy, silly, just not a great character. By the end of the book she starts acting a little more realistic and mature but it was too late to erase my initial impression of her.

A really great romantic suspense!

Lots of action-packed adventure following two complete opposites as they navigate a dark mall, hostile bank robbers hunting them, obstacles at every turn & their feelings for each other throughout one long night! Very well-written & developed! And lots of steam!

There were times Bailey needed a good smack, then there were times here brain was very quick and kept her and Con out of trouble. The beginning was all her mother coming out of her mouth, like she didn't have a brain of her own. Luckily Bailey grew a backbone and became who she was meant to be. It completely helped her and Con do what they needed.

Like:
- the fact that the heroine is quiet but still resourceful
- the hero's appreciation of her
- the set-up / situation

Didn't like:
- the hero referring to her as his "lady". Is this a thing? It feels weird to me :-/
- writing style a little bit simple

Probably 2.5 stars but I'll be positive...

I liked the premise of the story overall but found the dialog to be common, extremely cliche much like B-movies, and too many times the conversations or inner dialogs of the characters were repetitive. I found myself rolling my eyes, mumbling UGH and scrolling past a lot. I love the idea of the series being about the brothers and each of their adventures to love.

Romantic

I thought this was a cute story of love and survival. The people were so courageous and resourceful. I wish I would have known about the side characters after the drama it would have closed a couple of loose ends. Overall though the story was so romantic by the end, I love how everything came together.

Survive the Night

This starts off slowly with a breakup. Bailey loves Con but hates his job in SWAT. So she gives him up.
Then they are locked in a mall with armed men and must rely on each other to survive.
This story is full of witty banter and hilarious one liners as well as plenty of action. A really good read.
