I have read Pam of Babylon and loved it. Looking forward to read the other volumes, because the aftermath of betrayal is such a bottomless place for stories to be born.
My review for Pam of Babylon: When a book starts from a seemingly perfect place for the character, you know he is not going to stay there long… So when Jack Smith is looking at the face of Sandra, his mistress, thinking “I am the luckiest man alive,” his luck is at its end. Not only would Marie, his wife’s sister, find out about his affair, but he would to live long enough to try to handle the scandal with Pam, his meek, trusting wife.
While he is cheating on her, Pam waits excitedly for his return. “She had the week to prepare for his homecoming… she tried to make it an oasis for him.” Despite her trust in Jack, she knows intuitively that things between them are not quite right. “There was a tiny, itsy bit of doubt, a niggling worry, an insecurity in the back of her mind. He was disconnected from her.”
When she gets a call from the hospital that Jack has died from a heart attack, Pam goes to pieces and then, gradually, reassembles them, finding a new strength in herself. She now learns the truth about him and a few of the women with whom he betrayed her. Sandra, too, goes through grief: “Her life had changed overnight.”
This book is about looking forward to restart life already, even in the presence of death. It is about healing, part of which comes from forgiveness. I know this sounds strange to some readers, who find Pam’s behavior ’too unreal.” Apparently it is easier and perhaps more natural for many of us to succumb to vengefulness. At the same time, this is exactly why this book is so fascinating. It offers a different possibility, a more hopeful one. “There was something about cleaning up, washing everything, that spoke of new beginnings.”
The author, Suzanne Jenkins, stated that she wrote the character as the opposite of herself. “I am at the opposite end of the spectrum of reactions....I wouldn't be forgiving and embracing.” Yet I feel that by the end of the story Pam inhabits her to such a degree that her words come straight from the heart, gut, and mind.
So many twists and turns I couldn’t put it down. I am also a hater of Jack Smith. I can’;t imagine what I would say to such a narcissistic person if I met him but he is scary personified. I felt so many emotions from Pam and rightfully she was distraught, angry and sad for the loss of her husband but more for the loss of her marriage. It is so hard to put into words what I was feeling when I read this series.... while Jack had a terrible childhood, he certainly had a strange way of dealing with his life and the challenges that went with living with an alcoholic mother and abusive step-father. The worst part for me is thinking that the children of Jack and Pam are also dealing with their own demons and don’t know how to deal with them appropriately. More the once Pam talks about going in and talking to a counselor and never does. Her dealings with the multitude of feelings about a philandering husband who gives her AIDS, impregnates Sandra Benson who is half her husbands age, sexually abuses her younger sister and has a relationship with her under her very nose for years and says she never knew anything was going on. How much can you deny, explain away or justify to yourself - like I said so many twists and turns I couldn’t put the book down because I couldn’t imagine what Suzanne would come up with next.

3 1/2 Stars. I am really on the fence about this set of books. On one hand, it is entertaining in a twisted kind of way, like watching a train wreck - you can't turn away. On the other hand, I really disliked Jack. The weasel had the audacity to die and leave his wife holding a bag full of lies! As the stories unfold, more lovers come out of the woodwork, each with their own history with Jack. Although Pam should have been nominated for sainthood, I on the other hand, was ready to kill Jack all over again. A fascinating and preposterous read.

Jack. Handsome. Rich. Ill. Sick. Assertive. A father. Husband. Lover. Adultery. Abuser. A Dom. Pam. Beautiful. Wife. Curvy and health conscience. Mother of two. Loved by all. Marie. Sister to Pam. Abused as teenager. Lover to Jack. Ashton. Best friend and lover to Jack since they were boys. Jack?
Wow, one of those “I can’t stop reading, have to see what train wreck is next”. The first couple of books were very well edited, and then editing got very sloppy; double words in sentences, repeated phrases or a few words, etc. It was distracting & annoying.
Loved the storyline but the typographical errors nearly made me put the book down and not finish. Wasn't this proofed at all. I plowed through and enjoyed it even as depressing as it was. I couldn't wait to see what the next bazaar thing was going to unfold. Congrats on a great read. Find another proofreader. F.Nolen
Came across this box set by chance, and so glad I did. This story has me hooked. Aside from some grammatical errors and incorrect punctuation which admittedly annoyed me, I loved the journey of Pam's life and subsequently, her family's also. Definitely a must read for anyone who enjoys the drama along with ebbs and flows of life.
Pam continues to have the family with the weirdest experiences and friends imaginable. And then there are the love stories they all get involved in. Thankfully, Pam appears to have an exciting loveliness ahead of her. And her kids have both found someone to be intimate with.
I love this series. Suzanne is a wonderful writer and this was the first of her books that I read. Now I read everything of hers that I can get my hands on.

Way too long, unnecessary characters introduced toward the end, needed better editing, but good story idea, could be a best seller with deeper dive into psychological problems, whitewashed the real issues. Took too long to read.
How much can one woman and her family take. This series has a little bit of everything. Front in center is Pam, which was amazing to see her come out of her shell and into her own. Brave lady...
I read this set through in five days time - only stopping for work and sleep! Though at times I thought only a daytime soap opera could have any more drama, the Smith family and all interested characters had it all!
The books were long and poorly edited. What it did highlight was how one person could infect so many. Now we have the virus which is spread so much easier. It brought the concept of the pandemic home.
The dead husband was a monster, but this series is like a train wreck, that you can’t stop watching. I keep hoping the characters will redeem themselves at some point.....!
I enjoyed the whole series. Terrific . Great stories. Very realistic situations presented. Unexpected ending . It left me wondering if there another book coming up .
