Noah might be the best oceanographer the Institute has seen in years, so he’s in no hurry to finish his Master’s degree...until a new arrival threatens his chance at a once-in-a-lifetime research grant. Suddenly, it’s sink or swim time.
Lise knows there’s a slot at the Institute’s newest project with her name on it. But she’s all math and very little science, and when it comes to the ocean, she’s completely out of her depth.
Lise and Noah are determined to win—even if it means working with each other to overcome their fears. But what begins as a shallow bargain lands them straight into the deep end when they realize they want the same thing—each other. Unable to ignore their physical chemistry, can they balance personal ambitions against an illogical attraction that threatens everything they’ve worked so hard to achieve?
Slow burn romance with a touch-averse heroine and a getting-on-with-life-averse hero. Noah is stringing out his time as a graduate student to the point of being kicked out. It's hard not to see this as a general unwillingness to commit in life--he has a great deal of facile charm and an unwillingness to face up to things, which are not ideal traits in a life partner and it makes the romance a little uneasy for me. He does put the work into accommodating the heroine's issues, but overall he didn't quite click as a hero for me. Possibly because 'woman putting a lot of work into helping man get on with his career' is quite a different beast to 'man putting a lot of work into making woman feel loved and sexually comfortable'. The former is a great deal more common and generally ends poorly for the woman. None of which is a flaw in this book per se, it just didn't land for me, and I see I have used 'for me' three times in this review, which makes this a fairly clear 'it's not you it's me'.
Touch-averse heroine meets the king of procrastination (and the sea)
Another good one from Six de Los Reyes. Particularly good because as a romanceclass Flair book, this one is extra steamy. I was very happy with the level of heat int his book. More than that, it was a story about two young-ish folks and how they're going about organizing their futures, but without melodrama. They both have some challenges to overcome, but their lives and their relationship evolve over a semester in a very realistic way. Plus there's a certain magic that permeates the ocean-going and science-doing portions of this book. The characters are completely in love with what they do and it's wonderful. As with Beginner's Guide, this book could have used a copy-editing pass. However, I love this author's voice and her scientific institute settings and I will absolutely buy anything new she writes.
There's something about Six's works that connect with me on a somehow profound level, like all the parts of my person ~*come*~ alive when I read them. Noah and Lise feel so real, they're almost tangible, and no character or plot line is too small or unimportant. (Yo, Phylle, I'm waiting for you) There's a lot of relatable introspection that will make you think about how it feels to be human and wanting, and also many, many to-dive-for interaction that will encourage you to just go ride the waves, if you know what I mean. Frankly, if this went over 500 pages, I would've seen it to the end (or bottom of the ocean, apply your preferred ocean reference here, whatever). This is wonderful—I loved all the science and math quips (throwback and shout out to HS!), loved the romance ("I think I love you") and the sex (holy Schrodinger's cat, that was hot), loved the whole thing, full stop. Highly, strongly, proudly recommended especially to those looking for steamy, STEM romance.
"He had time. He wasn’t stuck. He just wasn’t in a hurry to leave."
"'I think you were checking out her boobs.' 'I have boob envy. What’s your excuse?' 'I’m a guy?' 'That’s your excuse?' 'What? You brought it up. Shit. Are you going to start lecturing me on boundaries? Because I know how that works. I am not the asshole people like to think I am.'"
“'You’d love to see me drown, wouldn’t you.'" 'Lise Meitner, I would never let you drown.'"
“Not that it’s any of your business, but that’s none of your business.”
"'Don’t you want me here? You’re very confusing.' A laugh escaped his lips. 'I’m the confusing one?' 'I’m going to kiss you now,' she whispered, pushing him to sit on the steps. 'For my own peace of mind.' 'I think you should—' 'Yes, I really should.'"
"'Excuse me? As we speak, trillions of microorganisms are being wiped out thus sterilizing everything the light touches.' 'Again. You’re kidding.' 'I’m kidding. Of course, I am. What does it take to make you laugh, Lise Meitner?'"
"'Fantasies? Of me?' 'Oh, yeah. Like a sexy sexy Diadema.' 'A what?” “Sea urchin.” He mimicked the movement of sea urchins with his fingers. 'All spiny and pointy on the outside, mush on the inside.'"
"'You keep looking at me like that.' 'Like what?' 'Like you can’t see anything else.' 'Because I can’t,' he whispered. 'You make me drown but I can breathe, I don’t know how that is. I believe you when you say I can be anything.'"
"How valuable do you think you are if you just keep making people wait for you to get your life together?”
"All I know is that I don’t want us to be like tangent lines that intersect once and never again.”
This is one of my highly anticipated releases this year because a.) It’s the second romanceclass Flair book and y’all know I highly anticipate steamy releases. LOL b.) It’s Six de los Reyes!
We’ve also been given snippets and bits of info about it the past year or so, without a definite release date so when the cover reveal dropped last week (without warning!) you bet your ass I screamed IRL in excitement.
Fast forward to today, where I’ve already dedicated a Taylor Swift song to Lise x Noah and have been retweeting random ocean things bec they would find it interesting. HUHU. I’m so affected!
Let me explain why, in this non-spoilery (hopefully) review:
1. The romance is delicious. It’s rivals-to-lovers and the banter is peppered with scientific puns, math jokes, and good ol’ flirting. This is not my first SixDLR book, but I still find the nerdy flirting between the protagonists v enjoyable. And that’s when they’re still rivals. When they finally become lovers, ugh, I assure you, your insides will turn to mush.
2. The math and science are sound. I may not be knowledgeable on most of the math & science-y things but those parts are delivered with sincerity and, obviously, more fun than the textbooks. I’d also like to note one part where Lise was deconstructing the process for finding ‘x’, a glimpse on how her mind worked, and I couldn’t help but think that had my math teachers in the past explained it to me in that simple and practically applicable manner, I wouldn’t have spent so much time and energy flunking and hating math.
3. The steamy parts are *bites lower-lip* exquisite. I don’t want to elaborate so much on this because I feel like everyone would enjoy this more with zero expectations. Expect it to be really good, though, because, it is. LOL
4. The water metaphors are brilliant. The premise is Ocean Boy x Math Girl goes out to sea to fight each other and then fall in love so ocean lines are a given, but I wasn’t prepared when the simplest of things, even the deepest of things, were translated beautifully into narrative with ocean metaphors. And they fit perfectly with the scenes or the emotional state of the characters in that given moment. They don’t feel forced; they flow naturally. (See what I did there? Flow? LOL. Nevermind.)
5. I don’t know how much has already been revealed about Lise’s thing, but it goes without saying that it is dealt with utmost sensitivity and respect – a romanceclass trademark. The Author’s Notes after The End discussed this even further and offers more insight on the matter. My only comment is that I would’ve liked if Nero’s thing had been discussed too, bec, well, that was what I personally resonated most with. Read the whole thing, and let’s discuss it. (I’m dying to discuss this with someone! LOL)
So yeah, if this long-ass review didn’t convince you to pre-order the book right now, might I suggest to take a long, hard look at that cover? Because it’s got something we don’t usually find on romanceclass covers. Heh. Hopefully after this we see more of this in the covers. We live in eternal summer on a beachy archipelago after all. (Anything to do more shirtless cover photo shoots! LOL)

Enjoyed this one. It took a while for me to warm up to Noah. I did like Lise right away, and this being a part of the steamier Flair line I must say it suuure was. That scene with Lise taking her own pleasure while Noah looks on A+++.
I eventually liked Noah a bit more when he was very much about consent, and asking Lise if she was okay with what was happening, and giving her control of the situation.
I too can't swim and yes yes i live on an island so Lise was relatable to me. Water is scary ok! i like the beach and i'll go in up to acertain point but if the water's not clear enough lol. no thanks. Si Lise giirl i was right there with you.
A lot of the science went over my head cuz humanities students and also not a fan of Math lol but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story and characters!
“As long as you’re willing to meet me halfway into the shallows, I’m willing to meet you halfway into the deep end.”⠀
The thing about Six’s characters is that they always hit close to home - with me personally, anyway. First, with Kaya (of Beginner’s Guide) and now with Lise for the second #romanceclassFlair title 🔥⠀ ⠀ While its relatability is one thing that kept me hooked, what really reeled me in is that it’s unapologetically SMART (ahem 👀) As a humanities & social sciences gal, most of the technical terms went over my head but having more STEM rep is something I can get behind (talk nerdy to me, yes?)⠀ ⠀ Like what Six said in her author’s note, I admit I found Noah to be a difficult LI but agree that he tries - and that’s worth something. Got a bit nervous with some conflicts but things were wrapped up well and went towards the direction I was hoping for (Noah = redeemed) 💕⠀ ⠀ Also, can I just say - Six’s ocean and water metaphors are the best 🌊 I still have lots of ~emoceans to process but some real-time feelings here: https://bit.ly/3kJPkUF ✨⠀ ⠀ PS. Snack reco while reading? Bananas 🍌(so you don’t get jealous over Noah’s packed lunch🍴)⠀
I am a Six de Los Reyes fan through and through. Of course, I'm biased because of the grad school focus, but also her writing never fails to capture minute emotions and grand concepts. In this book, the focus is on self-sabotaging behaviours in grad school, touch aversion, and all things in between.
As it's packaged as a Flair book, we'd expect the steam to start off the bat, then simmering and drowning us for the length of the book. Well, this book does things differently, which I think worked out fine, all in line with its central themes of patience and the slow burn.
3.5 because I tried but couldn't get into Noah, or maybe the idea of Noah. Maybe he reminds me too much of myself lol (JUST SEND THE DAMN EMAIL NOAH)
Another thoughtful book by Six de Los Reyes who manages to examine her characters’ weaknesses without feeling voyeuristic, and deliver some hot sex in a way that was both humorous and moving. I really loved Noah and wanted him to get his act together and live up to Lise’s expectations. And I thought Lise’s aberrance to touch was interesting. Although she is the one with a “disability”, she was also the one who was bold, strong and true. Nice twist at the end, too. Could have used a final proof read, not just spellings, but parts of sentences were missing. Didn’t ever affect understanding though.
I would love to count up the total time I spend checking Six's Goodreads page to see if there's a new book coming. I was so excited when I saw this, I hit "one click buy" so fast, I think I broke my thumb. And it didn't disappoint. She just knows how to write it. This book is funny, heartfelt, sexy. I'm going to be thinking about Noah saying "Good?" for probably the rest of my life.
Also when she said "talk nerdy to me," I gasped out loud. Kaya + Nero 4eva
Hard to rate this one. Six de los Reyes is an autobuy for me, and her talent is on full display in PSN. But there were issues with the emotional arc and grammar/editing. I think my reading experience stayed fairly close to the author's own writing experience, at least according to the note at the end. When I wasn't bleeding for Lise and Noah or cheering them on, I was confused as to whether their feelings for each other were actually progressing, or just going back and forth with no net change.
Lise is a math genius who decides to pursue a post-graduate degree in oceanography. She meets ocean expert Noah at the university’s marine lab, and they work together to overcome her fear of the open water and her aversion to other people’s touch.
This book started good, but the focus on the characters’ physical relationship in the latter half and all the water metaphors (plus the inconsistent verb tenses) became tiring, so it took me a while to finish.
Noah is a likable no hoper who doesn't want to fail, ergo, he never tries. Lise is complicated and interesting, and pushes Noah.
Their journey together is fascinating and I loved it. (also I'm writing this review ages after I read it and my memory is fuzzy, but that's just an excuse to read it again).
Steamy and nerdy, never thought those two words would actually work? Think again. I love the science (even though some or most of it had me Googling) and the steamy chemistry between Lise and Noah.
Man, I didn't think the title of this book was going to be so literal. Watching an ambitious woman trying to drag a reluctant man into doing something--anything--with his life isn't fun. The whole reason I picked up this book in the first place was for Lise's journey. So I feel a bit cheated.
It's nice to see a heroine with touch sensitivity. It's not common, especially in books of the romance variety. It's good, fun, science-y, ocean-y and p cute. Give it a read.
I like how the author mixes academics with a love story. Six de los Reyes knows her maths and sciences and research and manages to make them sexy enoug.
