Rick didn’t ask to be the next in line for the throne, but that’s the hand he’s been dealt.
It’s not the openly being gay that’s causing his family embarrassment; it’s the drinking, the motorcycle and the countless run-ins with the press that’s the problem.
Rick has to clean up his image, and soon.
Enter Benjamin Roberts, director of the children’s charity that Rick just became the patron of.
There’s something about Ben that Rick can’t resist. But is love a good enough reason to risk everything? Is an affair with a ‘commoner’ a step too far?
When love versus traditions, does the heart run the head, or is royal duty more important?
Almost immediately I started skimming a lot of this. The writing just...wasn't working. It wasn't grabbing my attention, the characters felt one dimensional. I got bored reading about them painting and decorating a house for charity. Yeah. That made me feel bad but also...not. Because it's fictional and it was boring.
Rick didn't even feel like a "royal rebel" in this. Yeah he did a few *gasp* inducing things for a royal, but they weren't that bad, and he didn't do very rebel-y things in this.
Ben was supposed to be 38 years old. Rick 34. They did not feel that old, they felt younger (i thought they'd be in their twenties, late twenties at most). Their dialogue just didn't feel like that of older men.
There was silly, manufactured drama at the end, it blew over quickly and Ben and Rick made up without even talking. It became a non-issue. And then that was that! With only two little fake articles after talking about their
This wasn't for me. It did not work and I felt the writing needed work. Thumbs down from me.
This was an entertaining story. Cute, sweet, little drama, just a fun, quick read. It is like a modern fairy tale in which the crown prince of England, Rick, falls in love with Ben, head of a charity organization and a commoner. Rick isn’t deterred, however, to pursue Ben because he has serious feelings for him. And those feelings are reciprocated. These two men are great together. Initially Ben is, understandably, a bit wary of Rick’s intentions, but soon he loses all his shyness, and he approaches him with all the candor and sweetness he has. He is understanding of Rick’s unique position in life. Rick knows his obligations, but he is just a good guy, following his dreams of finding a man of his own. I loved their banter. I wonder how this would go in real life, and I can’t imagine it would be as easy as this. Rick has no difficulties meeting Ben, but knowing the British press, that seems hardly realistic. But it is fiction, so everything is possible. The paparazzi do come in in the end, but that is solved very quickly, as are most of the little hiccups along the way. I can’t forget to mention Rick’s best friend and chamberlain, Hugo, because he makes this story even more fun with his faux reprimanding but supportive attitude.
This definitely isn't your typical royal romance, as Rick, the next in line for the throne, is actually out and proud. His family knows, they just don't have much to do with him.
I adore the way that Rick changes, going from a press nightmare to an upstanding man in love. They way that he and Ben just click is sweet and endearing and they are just so darn perfect together. But, please, don't expect this to all be reality based, as I am assuming they would have a MUCH tougher time being together in a real royal family.
Royal Rebel is cute and entertaining, with just some light angst mixed in. I enjoyed every second of this Avery Duncan story and definitely recommend it for a quick, light read.
The Royal Rebel by Avery Duncan. This is His Highness Prince Frederick "Rick" and Benjamin "Ben" Roberts' story.
I enjoyed Rick and Ben's story. This was a cute and sweet story of two people from different social standings. Ben and Rick were perfect for each other. Ben calmed the rebellious attitude that Rick tended to get with all the rules and policies that he had to follow. Now, Rick's best friend, Hugo Everly, who also worked for Rick, trying his best to keep Rick out of trouble was a great addition to the story. Hugo was a fun character and I enjoyed the banter between the two whether Hugo was acting as his friend or in his role as Rick's Chamberlain. FYI, contains mature content. This is a M/M gay romance. A quick and enjoyable read with a great storyline and wonderful characters. Rick is a prince and Ben is a commoner so it's not a smooth road for them. I really liked watching them get through the little bumps along the way to their perfect ending! I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy for my honest review.
I cried tears of sadness, tears of joy, and tears of excitement. I can honestly that I really enjoyed this story. I look forward to reading more from Avery Duncan.
