A Bride for Nathan

Rate this book
Can a marriage by proxy work when the couple has never met?

Nathan, a widower, is critically injured in a Civil War battle and lies on his deathbed. His best friend, Ben, promises to care for his daughter.

Ben’s sister, Allison, is doomed to become a spinster so she jumps at the chance to become a widow when Ben suggests she marry Nathan. She must act quickly because the doctor said he wouldn’t last out the week. A problem arises after the marriage—Nathan doesn't die, and the couple comes to the realization they need to end the marriage or try to live as a family to make the best of the situation for the child. Can Nathan live with Allie's problem, and can Allie cope with Nathan’s disability? Will the platonic arrangement become permanent or will the couple come to fall in love?

AKA Barbara A. Masci & Barbara Masci-Goss

From Kindle Author Page:

Barbara Masci Goss is now just Barbara Goss. I live in Western New York State and have three grown sons, two step daughters and 10 grandchildren. I wrote my books in the early '90's and now that I'm retired I have obtained the book rights and am converting them to Kindle. That's exciting for me because I don't read paper books at all anymore. I have designed new covers with a new author name: Barbara Goss. My first two books "Captured Heart" and "Forbidden Legacy" went to a second printing in the mid '90's and the publisher added my name as Barbara Masci-Goss, but I now prefer to keep it short and sweet.

From Author Website:

I'm from Western New York, and I live with my husband and two cats, Mandy and Molly.

I wrote these books in the early 1990's in paperback. My publishers were Fleming Revell and Baker Book House.

Now, I have the rights and have put them out on E-Books so people can still enjoy them.

My goal in writing these books is to provide clean but still romantic and adventurous novels for all ages. I've always felt that we needed more clean, wholesome books. When I wrote these books there were but a handful of Christian romance writers. Now, thankfully there are more. My biggest influence in writing was Grace Livingston Hill. Enjoy.

A post-Civil War romance with spiritual elements, mostly
1865 Kansas. I gave it 3.5 stars.

Nathan, a Union soldier, lost a leg in the Civil War, and
gradually adjusted, & eventually was fitted w/ a prosthesis.
He had a sweet 5YO dtr Belle. Allison struggled w/ social
anxiety: being in crowds & meeting new folks. Ben, Nate's
good friend, saw that widower Nate would soon die and
worried about Belle. Ben suggested and then assisted Nate
& Allie (Ben's sister) to wed by proxy. Then Nate lived.

I liked how the leads supported each other, w/ respective
challenges. And fell in love on the train ride, East. Towards
the end, the story got a tad preachy, but I enjoyed how 2
imperfect couples (Ben had tender feelings for a lady) found
each other.

I listened to the audio version of this book and really enjoyed it. It is a Christian historical romance.
Ms. Goss always does a great job writing stories, but she also does a great job in providing variety between her books.
Nathan was different in that he was a soldier who had lost his leg and returned home with everyone expecting him to die. His little girl needed someone to look after her. Nathan's good friend asked his sister, who suffered from a social anxiety to marry Nathan by proxy. The surprise was that Nathan didn't die. Allie and Nathan worked through their discomfort together and actually became helpful to each other in dealing with their different challenging circumstances.
The story was heartwarming and uplifting. The narration by Leonor Woodworth gave even greater warmth and grace with the telling of the story. It was wonderful!

Nathan, severely wounded in the Civil war isn't expected to live. He is deeply worried about his young daughter Belle. Ben his best friend arranges a Proxy marriage with his sister Allie, to ease Nathan's mind.
Allie agrees to marriage to escape her life and not end up as a spinster. She has always wanted to be a Mother and this gives her that chance.
Nathan is in poor straits when Allie arrives. He is weak and spends most of his time sleeping and fighting off the infection in what is left of his leg. She expects imminient death, but something touches her as she begins to tend him.
Can they survive this crisis and become a loving family? With much work, some honesty between them on how they came to the points in their lives where they are now and a little girl that loves them both dearly they just might be able to pull this off!
You won't want to miss a minute of this book. Such a beautiful love story with a lovely ending.
I received an ARC of this book. I am choosing to leave a review and the opinions in this

Ben saved his friend Nathan who was deadly injured during the war. Who would care for Nathan’s daughter Belle when he died. Ben asked his sister Allie to marry Nathan so she could take care of her. But guess what, he didn’t die. Now they have to build their life together. Will his disability and her anxiety keep them apart or will love win?
This was a fun story that will keep you entertain the whole story with lovable main and side characters.

A Bride for Nathan is a historical romance set in nineteenth century America. Civil War soldier, Nathan, is critically injured in battle and agrees to a "marriage by proxy" to ensure that his daughter, Belle, remains cared for. Believing himself to be on his deathbed Nathan marries his best friend's sister, a spinster whose own future would be much more secure with the status of a 'widow' - even if she hasn't met the groom. But the newlyweds plan goes awry when Nathan lives and they must find a way to move forward with their lives despite being thrown together so unexpectedly.

This was my first 'proxy bride' story, not only in this series but in the genre as a whole, so I felt some kinship with Nathan and Allie as they faced the unfamiliarity of their new situation and struggled to adjust to the changes in their circumstances.

The writing felt a little awkward in parts and the narration sometimes stilted, but not terribly so. Tweaking the repetition of certain words and phrases would have given it some polish and made for a smoother reading/listening experience. (For example "The woman extended her arms to her, and Belle ran to her arms.") This is a pet hate, however, so my sensitivity may be greater than that of other listeners.

The narrator, Leonor Woodworth, has a pleasant voice. Soft and delicate it suits Allie's shy, anxious, character well, capturing her hesitancy and naivety, but is a little childish in tone for a woman of her age. The narrator handles the male voices well, and creates an endearing performance as five-year-old Belle.

I am not familiar enough with this period in American history to comment upon the accuracy of the language and historical references with any authority, but it struck me as sounding surprisingly contemporary at times. There is a youthfulness to American English, unbound by some of the formality of British English during the same period, that takes some getting used to!

I liked the idea and warmed to the characters, but felt as though it needed refining. I believe that the story would have benefitted tremendously from some conflict or tension, as many of the points at which one would normally expect the characters to struggle were only fleetingly addressed. Aside from resisting sympathy Nathan managed his anger without taking his frustrations out on others, his friendship with Allie grew swiftly, and Belle took to her new mother (and the return of the father she'd never known) without any difficulty or adjustment - despite having been left alone with her deceased childminder for two days prior to the formation of her new family. Allie's anxiety also ebbed and flowed at convenient points in the story, allowing her to rally whenever needed and never really causing the paralysing inconvenience which often characterises social anxiety in real life.

It was refreshing to have both protagonists in this story battling with their own disabilities - one physical and one psychological - and I particularly enjoyed the ways in which the overlapping facets of their conditions were treated. Nathan's amputation may have been brutally physical in nature but its lasting impact was on his confidence, and Allie's insecurity may be her main diagnosis but the way it presented as panic attacks and tremors was far more incapacitating. Neither experience was given any more or less validity than the other, and both were heroic in their own ways.

I was glad that the author covered some of Nathan's rehabilitation, too, though the gruelling process could have been explored with more candour and in greater detail. Rather than appearing brave, Nathan's resilience and reserve is sometimes unrealistic as he neither fell victim to the corrosive effects of repressing his emotions, nor vented them in healthy or unhealthy ways. He remained very controlled much of the time, as did Belle, which I felt belied the traumas to which they had each been subjected.

I wish this audiobook had been twice as long, but had spent the additional time exploring the raw experiences that these damaged characters would really have had to overcome in order to grow together as the book progressed. At the moment it feels like the abridged, hallmark-channel version of a more interesting story, and that's a shame because ultimately it does not do the characters justice. There's a lot to like about the characters and the main plot of the book, and several of the supporting characters were also strong enough to have carried stories of their own, and it is because of this that I would have liked their experiences to have been presented with more honesty and depth.

A Bride for Nathan is a very sweet, innocent, romance with a distinctly Christian tone. I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes stories in that genre and is looking for a relatively lightweight listen that focuses upon the growing relationship between the main couple without too many obstacles keeping them from their happily ever after.

The book is boring

Even though the book has a good set of themes, the behaviour of the characters are quite predictable as well as their responses. It lacks its own character and the text lacks any liveliness or compelling attributes. Must one read a Christian book when the behaviour of its characters reveal a lack of genuine faith or Reliance on God.
Indeed, the selfish notion of falling in love, as usual, is badly botched and relies on the notion of beauty. Isn't it amazing that God looks at the heart while we are centred on outward appearances? This is a clear indication on our own reliance on our own understanding.
Jesus betrothed himself to a bride knowing that the background of her every member was a people born in sin and shapened in iniquity. There was nothing comely about us that his own block's cleansing did not create. Have we become so deceived as the church in Galatians? Having begun in the Spirit, do we expect to fulfilling the purpose of his salvation in the flesh? Can't we demonstrate that we walk and think differently? Is there no trace of God's character in us that we can't love first, expecting nothing in return? He does it everyday for sin error a d saint alike. But he seeks a profit from the believer_ a reflection of himself. Telling a reader that a character is good does not necessarily illustrate that? So are we to just take the author's words and intentions for it.
The book is devoid of substance. It's a good idea that never fulfilled its destiny.
And what is sad and true about this? Too many Christian books are like eating cardboard. No salt, no pepper and totally devoid of unique character or any character. And that is sad because some out of desperation read these things which are a breeding ground for temptation. How was Daniel made ten times wiser because he chose to honour God and more than 80 / 90% of Christian romance are ten times worse than those written by others? Have we no vision, no goal no counsel from Christ, in whom all wisdom and knowledge is invested? Why do we allow ourselves to be robbed? The most distinguishing feature of the book is its cover. But the beauty and Grace this art seeks to impress upon the reader's imagination is no where within the text.

This story was so engaging that I listened to it nonstop. Wounded soldier, Nathan, is not expected to live, especially after losing a leg in battle. He is a widower and has no other relatives to care for his 5yo daughter. His best friend, Ben, accompanies him home and then suggests that Nathan marry his spinster sister who will be able to care fore Nathan's daughter. This is during the civil war and proxy/mail order brides were a thing. Allison is approaching 30 and is still unwed...her mother is trying to change that and is match-making her with someone that Allie does not want. When her brother Ben, writes Allie and suggests that she marry his dying friend in order to care for his little girl, she believes that this is just the break that she needs! Since time is of the essence, Ben sends a marriage certificate that Allie can sign and have the local minister witness, so she is married without even meeting her groom. However, instead of waiting until Nathan passes to head to her new home, Ben summons Allie immediately since her current care provider has died. Allie arrives and bonds with Nathan's daughter and, to her surprise, Nathan is recovering well. Will Allie stay now that Nathan is on the mend and doesn't really need her? Can Nathan overcome the anger/guilt from the loss of his wife, and will he reveal the secret regarding her death? Great story, well developed characters and I look forward to Ben's story. Narration was perfect for these characters.

Whenever Barbara Goss releases an audio, I can't wait to listen. This one has taken my heart! Nathan is a soldier, wounded in the line of duty. Not expected to live, his best friend Ben suggests he marry his sister, Allie so that Nathan's daughter will be well taken care of. Marriage by proxy, Allie becomes his wife, but ends up going to his home prior to his death. And with the help of good care, a fighting will and love, Nathan recovers! But now what will happen? I fell in love with this couple. Nathan is a broken man, a young widow and has had trouble with relationships. Allie is convinced that she should be a spinster, but truly loves her new stepdaughter and feels at home with Nathan. The two have issues well beyond their own relationship. Will their faith guide them to be together? It's a lovely story, and it is a smart, loving and well written listen.

Leonor A Woodworth brings this story to life. I love anything she narrates, always full of emotion and paced perfectly. I love her array of voices and she can portray characters in a way that I feel that I know them. She does a wonderful job with Nathan and Allie, and she is spot on with their daughter! Loved it!

Nathan looses his leg on the day before the Civil War ends. The doctor's don't expect him to live but his best friend won't give up on him. His wife died the day his daughter was born and he's worried there will be no one to care for the little girl. His friend suggests he marries his sister by proxy so she can be a momma for the little girl after he passes.
Allie has severe social anxiety and can't handle crowds or even people she knows sometimes. She knows she'll be a spinster but when Ben's letter arrives asking her to wed his dying friend and become a Mother to his little girl, she agrees. It seems like a secure future for her.
But....Ben doesn't want to die. He's a fighter and pulls through. Now what? Will they go separate ways? Will they keep a marriage of convenience? Or will it deepen into a loving family? Can they help each other through their struggles?
This is a clean, sweet romance.
It was so good! I loved it. It was nice to see a story where a character couldn't handle people and see her getting support to get through it. The characters were great and I totally recommend this book.

A Bride for Nathan
The Proxy Brides, Book 3
By: Barbara Goss

This is a sweet clean historical fiction romance set shortly after the end of the civil war.

Nathan, a widower with a young daughter was grievously injured and not expected to live. His best friend Ben brings him home to Kansas, expecting him to die. Ben's

sister Allie has a social anxiety disorder. She is distended to become a spinster. Nathan needs someone to raise his daughter, so Ben sets p a proxy marriage between

them.

When Nathan survives the two aren't sure what to do. They both love Belle, so staying married wins out. The listener will be taken on their journey of healing. Listen to find out how this story ends.

The author has included some historical facts that I find to be a gift.

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. : Leonor A Woodworth is always a treat to hear.

Love Story Despite Disabilities

A wounded, permanently disabled and dying soldiers' friend offers his sister as a proxy bride willing to take on the soldier's daughter.... except what if he doesn't die. It shows the level of compassion and respect that is needed in any relationship and especially when dealing with a life changing event. A truly beautiful story although not quite as clean as most of this author's other books.

Parents- PG13- more young adult +16 and up
Language: none
Violence: none, cleaning of the man's wounds and stump
Sexual Content- There's a few snuggling in bed scenes and male arousal, discussions of desires, there's a beginning bedroom scene but the door closes pretty quickly

The narrator does a great job, was a bit slow but better at 1.3x speed, and was fun to listen to.

Loved, loved, loved this one!
It is well written with good continuity and flowing scenes, the falling in love and romancing is done very tastefully, the characters are believable and I thoroughly enjoyed Nathan and Allie's story.
Both of them have handicaps and it was quite touching to see how they learned to live with and overcome them.
Barbara Goss has given us a remarkable story and Leonor Woodworth has done an excellent job with her interpretation and narration.
I have no hesitation recommending it having listened to the audiobook version.

Allie and Nathan

Someone once said, war is he'll and then you are in war and wounded. Wondered by a cannonball, near death in a battlefield. Allie was wounded too but by a psychological problem causing extreme anxiety in stranger crowds. They are thrown together by the need solved by a proxy marriage. Through the Grace of God and good care Nathan gets better instead of dying. Can these two find true love. You'll have to read it to see. I absolutely loved this story and hope you will too.

Another great book by Barbara Goss! I love the premise of this series, it is fantastic. The story of Nathan and Allie is a great one. I loved the flow of this book and how the relationship develops with the couple. The way Ms. Goss writes, it brings the characters to life where you can relate to them. Even after reading this book, I think, hmmm. I wonder how they are doing now? Now that is a great book.

A Bride for Nathan (The Proxy Brides, Book 3) was a great read by Barbara Goss. Nathan is a widower who was critically injured during the war. His best friend Ben promises to take care of Nathan's daughter. Ben tells his sister Allison she should marry Nathan by proxy to be a mother to his daughter, Belle. They marry but Nathan doesn't die as they thought he would. I loved reading Nathan and Allison's story and can't wait to read more by Barbara Goss.

This is the third book in The Proxy Brides Series. I haven't read the first books in the Series yet. I love the cover! This is a sweet and clean slow burn romance. Nathan and Allison are great and strong characters, both struggling against a disability/disorder. I love their happy ending. Belle, Nathan's daughter, and Ben, Nathan's brother, are also great characters. Leonor A Woodworth did a great job with the narration. I enjoyed my listening.

4 1/2 star This was a very nice book where two struggling with their own illnesses come together to overcome what they felt was a handicap.
The only reason I can’t recommend this to my preteen advanced reading friends is there is talk of “consomating the marriage “ and they describe abut to the bride. So I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling parents or preteen this was “clear” of anything although the author wrote it in a very mature as clean as possible way.
Will read others from this author

For Belle?

You have to love that for both Allie and Nathan their priority is Belle and her happiness and wellbeing. They have very low expectations for themselves, which is heartbreaking, but together they learn acceptance of their own limitations, have hope for a better future and they find a love they never knew was possible. Heart warming and uplifting this is a really sweet addition to the series. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

Sweet story of two ordinary people, both with their own baggage, finding love and strength in the other. Nathan never thought he'd find another woman who loved him, especially after his tragedy. Allie never thought she would be able to allow a man close enough to find love. Yet, in each other they found completion.

This was my first Barbara Goss book. However, it will not be my last.

Dealing With Disability

She's suffered a variant of agoraphobia since childhood and he "gave" a leg to the cause in the War between the States, but this story goes, oh, so much deeper than that. Narrator Leonor Woodworth always delivers a stellar performance and author Barbara Goss has dug deeply to provide a richness of character and fascinating plot with some interesting twists.
