Deprival haunted her…

Regret troubled her…

Silence left her detached...

A life in the service of others is both penance and a blessing. She soothes her personal hell by pulling victims from theirs, helping them on their path to survival; never finding her own.

When a crippling blow finally evaporates her last hope, the temptation to give up is strong. Still, she can’t find it in her to turn her back on those who need her: the innocent, whose rescue is her perpetual goal.

He was blind, but now he sees how his family has sifted through his fingers. The reality hits hard when his son becomes a stranger, slipping deeper into transgression. Concern has him call on the one person he fears will see his own failures all too clearly. A woman he’s kept his distance from for his own protection.

What appeared to be an incompatible pairing, turns out the unyielding bond needed to heal them all.

I'm so sad to see this series ending. These characters have faced so much tragedy and to come out on the other side able to love and trust again has brought me to tears EVERY single time. Freya Barker has amazed and awed me with her written words. I've never been one to want to dive head first into a story that I know will make me ache in pain for the lives of fictional characters, but that is just what this author does to me. Part of that reason is knowing she will provide them someone who will love them unconditionally and bring them into the fold of a family not born of blood but shared experiences and are as strong, if not stronger. This series really is a must read! ARC provided by NetGalley.

I remember the first book of Freya Barker's that I read - I went in to it wondering if I'd like it, hoping that I would and worrying that, gods forbid I didn't, how could I tell her, someone that I knew and really liked, that I just couldn't take to it.... well, the worst never happened, the story was excellent and that concern turned out to be so far from an issue that I'd actually completely forgotten my worry until I was recently looking over some of my reviews of Ms Barker's previous books..

Ok, I'll stop digressing and actually move on to what I want to say....

Still Air was an absobloodylutely fantastic read - let's face it, that's pretty much a given when it comes to this series!! The one thing you can always be sure of with Freya's writing is that it will pull on ALL of your emotions; it's expressive, meaningful, sarcastic, so very true to life, real, hard-hitting and heartbreaking at times and, as is the case with this series especially, the story is at points raw, painful and occasionally fugly BUT is is also sweet, hopeful, uplifting, humorous and heart-warming, her characters shows the true beauty and importance of friends and family (of choice and not just of blood - hell, at times often in spite of blood!!) and that now and again we have to wade our way through the seemingly never-ending crap continually thrown our way to get to the HEA that, in our darker moments, seems just that little bit - or possibly too far - out of reach!!

I FLOVED Still Air (just in case you didn't get that vibe already!!) What a way to end the series!

We saw a very different side to Pam than we had previously - where before she was the strong, resilient, confident woman this time, in her own story, we found that Pam had so many layers, had dealt and was still dealing with so much heartache and she suffered from as many, if not more, feelings and insecurities than the people that she took care of and supported. Afraid to open herself to anyone because she didn't feel deserving of love, care and a happy future, she kept everyone at arms length, especially Dino - until things happen and she can no longer avoid him!
Throughout the other books in the series, Dino has been the voice of reason, the strong one who could see and read more about people than they were comfortable with but lately he hasn't had the easiest of times himself, between his wife and all of her issues, his responsibilities to his kids and his feelings of having let his kids down and everything that happens in this book, it doesn't seem like he has time or should be looking for anything for himself.... until he gets close to Pam and they find out that they hit it off more than either of them expected.

If you haven't checked out the Portland, ME series, or for that matter, any of Freya's other books you are sorely missing out!!!!

I rate this fabulous read 5* - but if I could, I'd mark it way, way higher as five stars don't truly tell how good this book is!!!

Favorite Quotes:

Kissing this man is a full body experience, with every one of my senses fully engaged. Except perhaps my common sense.

Seventeen years old, and his eyes are eagle sharp. This boy is an old soul and he has exposed the sum of my existence in just a few words.

I sound like Tweetie Bird on helium, my tight voice is pitched so high.

My Review:

The goddess of words has obviously blessed Freya Barker. Her latest work was just another stellar addition to her impressive list of equally superb and thoughtful tour de force genius. The writing was engrossing and I remained totally engaged throughout. I always adore and relish her unusual and endearing characters, as they are relevant and identifiable people that work hard for a living and don’t have chiseled abs, or a model’s beauty. Instead, they are trying to make the best of it while struggling with real-world issues, make unwitting mistakes, swear like sailors, banter and tease each other like teenagers, and try to keep their families and friends from going off the deep end. The protagonists in this tale seemed to have been cursed as they were repeatedly staggered by one devastating family issue and disruption after another. Their lives are in near constant upheaval and are dealing with life altering events, turmoil, and chaos, while also in the midst of a blossoming yet unlikely romance. I delighted in the deep sense of ease, trust, friendship and camaraderie in this diverse group of friends. I covet their relationships and wish I could join their tight unit, however, I fear I do not have the fortitude to pass their typical initiation.

This is the fourth and final book in the Portland ME series. All books can be read as standalones but I have to ask WHY? Why the hell would you not want to read them all!?

Each book in the series is fairly heavy in storyline but each one has everything else you would expect from a Freya Barker book too.
If you've yet to read any of her books then you have really been missing out!
Freya writes about real people, whether it be flaws, weakness or illness, just like the majority of us. She adds a good healthy, panty melting dose of alpha in there too.
Every book she has written so far has had the ability to grip me from the start.

Still Air was no different, infact it was an amazingly bloody brilliant way in which to finish the series!

Still Air is Pam and Dino's story.
Throughtout the previous Portland ME books they have both been secondary characters and I for one have been freaking well dying to read their stories.

Pam is the owner of Florence House, a women's refuge. She had dedicated her life to helping others. Her dedication and protectiveness has been unwavering and inspiring, while underneath she has been hiding her own private hell, a past that is shatteringly sad.
She's always been the one to help others, keeping herself closed off but now life is finally becoming too much for her. During Still Air she comes to realise that she doesn't have to face her demons by herself, that her group of friends have infact become her family and they want to be there for her like she has been for them over the years,.

Dino, always having been a private person has been dealing with huge family problems but somehow, without noticing has become detached from his kids. It isn't until his son, Jonas almost hits rock bottom that he realises that now is the time to seek help.

Pam and Dino have spoken but have maintained distance, just tolerating each other up until this point but Pam is the one who helps Jonas. During this time they both gradually come to realise that maybe what seemed to be dislike was actaully masking something else.

I'm not going to give any other hints or spoilers as it really deserves and needs to be read first hand!
I loved the fact that this didn't follow the 'normal' storyline process, like the majority of books.

There was plenty of agnst (infact be sure you have a tissue supply at the ready), lots of heartwarming/heartmelting moments and stomach dropping parts but there is also laughter, love and some pretty hot sex.

I read ALOT but there are very few authors that have the ability to be able to completely draw me in to every single one of their books. The emotions being written about become part of you, you feel those emotions with each and every character! That can only happen when the author is truly talented and can pour herself into each book.

This has been such a memorable series and I’m sorry to see it come to an end.

Whilst the stories in the series are graphic reminders of the brutalities of everyday life for some women, and children, they go some way to offer hope and a future without pain and suffering. All of the women we have met so far have an emotional tale to tell but Pam has always been there to help them to safety and to turn their lives around, but who can help Pam when the tables are turned and she is the one suffering in silence; Dino, that’s who.

I’ve had a soft spot for Dino throughout this series. His quiet strength towards the women taken into his kitchen at The Skipper has been endearing. Now he’s the one experiencing problems in his home life as his ex-wife, and drug addict, starts to turn things upside down for him and his children and he knows that there is only one person who can help him when his son gets in with a gang and finds himself in a dangerous situation.

Pam and Dino have always had a rambunctious relationship but as we read their story it’s clearly a love/hate relationship but it’s not until they turn to each other for support that their eyes are opened towards their true feelings for one another.

Whilst this series has been a solid 5 stars for me, I didn’t feel the same connection with this story. Whilst I love Dino and Pam, their relationship didn’t pull me in as hard as the others. It’s something that I can’t put my finger on but for some reason but Pam didn’t seem right for Dino, despite the support they afforded each other. Whilst I did love the way Pam openly took Dino’s children into her heart, her bond with Dino felt distant in some way. Even their sexual encounters felt a little uncomfortable in a way that felt more like a brother/sister hooking up!

As always though, the author has written this story from her heart and you can feel the depth of emotion as the pages turn. Pam’s story was heart-wrenching and Dino’s problems with his children all too familiar. I will certainly treasure this series and the overall feeling of hopefulness it portrayed.

This is the book I have been waiting for.... Pam has been such a strong secondary character throughout the entire series. She is strong and fierce, protecting those who she takes under her wing. Putting her heart and soul into the Florence House and its occupants. Determined to help each woman who enters the doors find their way back to loving themselves and finding what they deserve out of life. I always felt that there was so much Pam was keeping hidden under the surface. Boy was I right...

Dino always keeps to himself, just showing up at the Skipper to do his job then goes home to his family. He doesn't normally share to much with anyone, unless he is giving his advice on the situation, which he has done his fair share. It is like if you step into his kitchen, be prepared to be set straight when you need a little shove in the right direction. Unfortunately the tables have turned this time around and it is Dino that finds himself needing that little shove. This big bear of a man loves with every fiber of his being. His children truly come first in his mind but it would seem that work and life have sort of taken priority in the last little while. Suddenly Dino finds himself not so connected with his family and life at home. With this new light on the situation he is determined to fix that, he just hopes that it is not too late to get that connection back with Jonas and Gina.

As the story unfold, we find Pam once again trying to help and lead those in the right direction. This time it is Dino's son Jonas that we find her attention on. The more she interacts with Jonas though the more we begin to understand Pam's story and how she found herself so focused on seeing the right things, being there when she is needed the most, not letting opportunity pass you by as there might not be a second chance to make a difference. This time sharing her true experience is what Pam uses to help get her point across and bring new light into a potentially dark situation.

When Pam is hurting and tries to handle things on her own, she finds herself in a completely new place. Surrounded by family of friends who are determined to stand by her side and help her though this time. Be her strength for a chance. Give back to her what they have all received in spades. It is very difficult for Pam to let them take care of the situation and just let the emotions take over. She hasn't done that in a very long time.

Freya, you have completely blow me away. With each book that I read, the deep raw emotions that I feel from your characters just gets stronger and stronger. One minute you have me giggling at the cute little antics and the next I can hardly read the pages as the tears are streaming down my face. You have made me feel like I was a member of the Florence house who was watching my best friend struggle and want to do everything I can to help her. To give her back everything she has given to me. You have this way of drawing me into your books, I tend to eat the pages up and forget about everything around me.

Thank you for bring us these wonderful real characters that we can relate to.

Freya Barker is now one of my favorite writers!

Her stories are geared toward couples in their late thirties and up. Real people, real romance. This story has all the feels and I enjoyed the journey of this couple from enemies to more.

Highly Recommended: Read It!

Freya Barker has done it again. She has woven a rich tapestry of words that draws the reader into the world she has created in her Portland, ME series. She wraps up the reader in a cocoon of well-written, tightly plotted words and emotions. Still Air is the last book in this series and she appears to have saved the enigmas for last. Both Pam and Dino have been supporting and supportive characters in the first three books, but their story is both heart wrenching and surprising.
Pam has always held her cards close to her vest. She has always been there for the women of Portland, supporting and protecting them, when she herself was never given those things. Her backstory is rich in heritage and heartache. The loss she has suffered is life altering and touches the reader to their very soul. She is a strong woman but while she's been caring for everyone else, she's not let anyone take care of her.
Dino, on the other hand, has had his hands full with his wife, her addiction, and her ultimate desertion, while trying to keep his children's lives on an even keel. After his wife leaves, Dino finds out all of the damage that she and her addiction has done, mostly to their son, Jonas. Dino struggles with being a single parent and is blindsided by the actions of his son. Keeping his eye on Jonas, allows his young daughter to begin to slip away also.
Pam and Dino have had an apparent love/hate relationship in the previous books. When Pam finds Jonas in the midst of a gang related crime, she realizes she must tell the boy's father. Ultimately, the couple realizes that their previous animosity toward each other was simply a case of chemistry that they both denied. Their journey together is full of loss, pain, passion, and love. Lucky for them they have an amazing group of friends that are truly more like family to support them.
While Pam struggles with a tremendous loss, Dino seeks to find a balance between his children and the woman who holds his heart. These characters may be the most passionate couple in the Portland, ME series. They may be older and wiser, but the fire they spark in each other all consuming. They are loving, sensual, and sizzling. Ms. Barker writes her characters from the heart. Her books are character driven and full emotion and love. While I'm sad that this is the last book in this series, I'm sure there are more great stories to come from Ms. Barker in the future.

I could never go wrong with Freya Barker’s stories.

Often times, I’ve found the final installment to be somewhat of letdown to the series. Anti-climactic and disappointing, its sole purpose is to tie up loose ends and please the reader into believing the last person standing has finally attained their HEA.

But never with Ms. Barker’s books. She does each segment equal justice. In fact, I would go so far as to say that the last book to either of her series, is a culmination of their stories

Still Air is about Pam and Dino. Pam has always had a significant role as both counselor and friend to the Portland ME heroines as well as all residents of Florence House. Dino is the chef at The Skipper. He’s quiet yet observant and when he speaks, he’s insightful. The chemistry between these two is explosive, off the charts. But what I thoroughly enjoyed were the scenes with Pam and Dino’s son, Jonas.

It was great to revisit with Gunnar and Syd, Viv and Ike, and Ruby and Tim. Reading the complete collection, you develop a vested interest in the rest of the group.

Freya Barker makes you emotionally connect with each of her characters. Not only do you feel through them, you live with them.

Once again, Freya Barker did not disappoint her fans! As we read the first of the series, Pam was always a secondary character but I, for one, always wondered what her story was. Now we know! And it was amazing! Who knew she had that much strength?!? And then there's Dino - WOW, who knew he had that side to him?!? Where can I find me one of him??

I loved the book but am sad that it's the finale of the Portland, ME series. But if I know Freya, I'd bet she's got another series idea percolating in that fabulous brain of hers. I'll be waiting!

Pam, so, so strong for everyone that needs her but underneath she has her own vulnerabilities and sadness, the result of hiding that and keeping it to herself means that when something happens she is on her own and broken. Dino, we know has been struggling, things going on at home and he is another character who has mostly kept his problems to himself, now he needs help. The characters in this story are suffering, trying hard not to drown under the weight of all they are dealing with, but they forget the support system that they have very much been a part of, this time it's them that need it most and each other. Heartbreaking story the pain at times unbearable with various issues, loss, gangs, drink and drugs. The kids trying to cope with a mother who steals, blames and is drugged out of her head, the separation of her from their dad and so much more. I felt overwhelmed for all of them, I loved the compassion and understanding even when at the worst, the unrelenting love Dino gives his kids even when they have done wrong. The support and love of friends who are family is absolute in this, interventions, just showing up when not expected but so needed. I'm an emotional wreck after this, so glad I had a brief break between Ruby's story and this, otherwise I'd have been sobbing for days. Despite all the pain there is a growing love and romance, there is inspiration as characters sort each problem and grow stronger, a bond between a woman who steps in to help and a young adult struggling with his life, is built and developes into a friendship and love. It's moving and by the end it was happy tears. The issues are real, each and every single one of them are happening all the time, I've had experience of just a tiny smattering of one of them and honestly it's affected my whole life and outlook, but it also made me empathetic to others and their pain, even in a fictional story. This series as a whole has blown me away, the hard subjects not held back from. It has been so well written with realism. It has darkness and light, hopelessness and helpfulness, tears of pain and tears of joy and it all ends with a HEA. I love the characters, all of them. I really feel it's worth more than five stars. Powerful.

OMG!!! Dino and Pam!!! This story blew me away and completely rocked my world! Holy shit! I knew that Pam and Dino would have amazing stories. However, I was not fully prepared for just how emotional this story would be. I am a huge fan of Freya's. All of her stories are incredible. They are full of emotion and "real" people. They have flaws, they have drama in their lives, they are NOT PERFECT. And I love them all. They struggle with weight problems, low self esteem, health issues, and the drama of every day life. They are very relatable and therefore the easiest characters to fall in love with. Pam and Dino have explosive chemistry. But they have a lot of obstacles in their separate lives. They understand each other better than anyone else does. I was hooked from the start and was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how their story would end. I am sad to see this series is at an end. I can't wait to see what the author has up her sleeve next!

LEEANN'S REVIEW
5 STARS

Pam and Dino have been with the Portland Crew from the very beginning but I guess you would say they were minor characters, but in a big way.
Now it is their turn to tell their stories.
Freya Barker has once again written a book that is full of emotion, angst & some seriously steamy scenes.
I think what I like about this series is the realistic expectations the characters have of themselves & each other & the real life problems they face.
The other thing that really draws me to Ms Barkers book is that not all of her couples are young and ‘fresh’. They are slightly older than your average romance characters and have bucket loads of life experience under their belts. They are educated & well informed. These are things that make a huge difference in storylines and plots.
And, as they say, it is the quiet ones you have got to watch! Pam and Dino in their own ways keep themselves to themselves and up until now have been very quiet. But, once they open up things change for them dramatically. They realise that whilst they have been the ones supporting everyone else, they can also count on their friends to reciprocate that support.

In saying all of that though, don’t be fooled, the chemistry is there and it is sizzling hot and sensual and the 5 star story line will keep you hooked from start to finish.
Worth getting your one click finger out for this one!!

TRACY'S REVIEW

It's hard to help others when you yourself feeling like your drowning. Do you give up when there are so many counting on your help? Could two people who feel damaged find the strength they need in each other?

You know what I love about this author? Her ability to create such strong female characters. These heroines are the true epitome of what you want a character to be. Have the strongest will and strength but yet are completely vulnerable. And these woman seem to be in my head, whether they don't see what others see (weight insecurities) to Pam who believes that kissing a man is a full body experience.

I'm sad to see this series ending but know that Freya Barker will continue to wow me with future characters.

Freya Barker has the uncanny ability to tear your heart to peaces, stitch it up and make you crave more. And this emotional roller coaster is no different than any other incredible story ever written by this amazing author. With every single book I read by her, I think that there is no way she can make my ugly cry harder or leave me in a bigger emotional puddle after finishing the story. But she proves me wrong time and time again. So yes, Still Air, this incredible emotional book left me with my heart wide open and my eyes puffy after the countless tears I shed for the characters. This is the story of a woman who's been irreparably broken and hides her demons even from the closest to her people. It is the story of an man who though his life was good, when it exploded in his face and left him to deal with the ruins. It is the story of two people, who are scared to open up to any one, two people who lived through their own brand of hell, two people that find solace, redemption and hope in each other. Two people that save each other.

I don't think I have enough words to express what an incredible book this is. The characters are very complex and well developed and feel so real that by the end of the book you feel like they are part of your circle. If you've read the previous books in the series, you already know and love them. But I can guarantee that no matter what you thought Pam and Dino's story is, you will be still surprised. They will touch corners of your heart and soul that you didn't even know existed. So be ready with the box of tissues by your side.

I think there is nothing left to say except that this book, this series is a MUST read. This author is a MUST read. So if you haven't read anything by her yet, it is about time you do so. I can guarantee you won't regret it. You can read this story as a standalone, but I think you will enjoy it much more if you read the whole series in order. So PLEASE, get your #oneclick finger working and pick your copy today. That will be your best buy for the year!!!

I wish I could give this book more than 5 *, ten times more, but as I can't, I will have to compromise with 5!!!

'Still Air' is the Fourth and Final book in the Portland ME Series, can be read as Standalone's,though to fully appreciate I would advise to read them ALL in order-WHY? Well the style and quality of the writing is always compelling, with character's who are well developed, strong Heroine/Hero's who are not only older in years(from 30's upwards),so in turn experienced life and its curve-balls thrown in their way-the intimacy which yes is H.O.T,yet tastefully done, adds to their respective journey's to the HEA's that they deserve.

This is Pam and Dino's story, character's in the sidelines previously, who have been there to support those before them, now having their own chance-I found this to be more emotional, heartbreaking at times, yet beautifully told, with an Epilogue, that I hope could lead to a spin-off around the children(I just don't want to say Goodbye to them!)

'I became a counselor to unburden others but have never felt right about unburdening myself'(Pam)

Pam,a 51 year old black woman,is the manager of 'Florence House' the woman's shelter, and someone who has been there for many over the years, yet she has a secrets of her own.
Dino, younger than Pam but not by much-big heart and in height, cook at 'The Skipper',(Dad to 17 year old Jonas and 13 year old Gina)-he has also been a support to many but missed things going on in his own family. These two over the years have a growing attraction,(although it's been oblivious to both of them) and in this story they finally get on the same page, well after a whole lot of tension, drama, and a little bit of angst thrown in.I haven't really gone into great detail as to the actual story itself,as it would give too much away, and you should read it for yourself.

Thank You Freya Barker for creating such wonderful stories/character's that you fall in love with.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

This is the fourth and final book in Freya Barkers Portland, ME series. I have not read the other books in this series. You can read each book as a standalone.

Pam is the chief counselor at Florence House. A local shelter for females who have suffered from domestic violence and abuse. Pam however has some healing to do of her own. Pam is beginning to be affected by the vile behavior of others that she deals with everyday. She would rather everyone think she doesn't need anyone to take care of her. She takes care of people. It's her passion and what she loves to do. Only one person though sees through her defenses. Dino. He's a man of few words until he really feels like something needs to be said. He himself has his own troubles in life. A drug addicted soon to be ex wife who tore their family apart. So much as happened he feels like he is disconnected from his two children. That can't happen. Their attitudes are just something he is not sure how to deal win but he knows who can. Pam. The woman who is determined to keep Dino at arms length.

This book will keep you one your toes. Pam and Dino have so much going on and problems slapping them in the face. They never seem to have any peace. I felt like I fought their battles with them emotionally. These two character really feel like they have been put through the wringer. I do however feel like I've missed some background in these two characters from the previous books. I take it that this series revolves around a group of people and each book is focused on one couple or the other. Therefore I know to those of you who have read the entire series you know exactly who Dino and Pam are.

If you looking for an emotional rollercoaster that you ride right along with the characters Still Air is a book you will love. I felt like I had fought the war right alongside Dino and Pam.

Freya has the uncanny ability to take characters that are completely normal people and twist and turn you into their lives. You want to be their friend. You want to know them. You want them to find love and get through their issues. You want them to have that HEA because it reminds you that you could have a HEA.
Still Air is no different. I could relate on so many levels with the female lead, Pam. She’s hard, but so vulnerable. Subconsciously she wants love in her life so badly, but she is absolutely terrified that someone will break through that exterior and see that she is just a girl who wants to love and be loved. She is a therapist who loves her work with women and families at the local shelter. It's not until she is completely depleted that Dino is able to penetrate her defenses and get into her heart and mind. She has been avoiding him for years to the point of being evasive and down right nasty because she knows that he sees right through her.
Dino had my heart as well as Pam’s when he asks her who takes care of her…. Who is there for her? To pick up the pieces of what is left of her after she wears herself down for the others in her life. It is only when he penetrates those outer walls does he truly realize how broken, battered and bruised she is… They then go through the hardest things that parents would have to go through and they feel what it means to depend on each other and love on a level that most of us strive to achieve.
I cannot say enough how much I respect and admire Freya Barker for writing characters who are REAL. They are real women with “jiggly booty” and men with impending “dad-bods” When they are described they aren't picturesque characters that I cannot relate to. It’s people that I could be friends with or see in my town. With storylines that could honestly happen. I have yet to read and review one of her books that I haven't adored and recommended to friends. You simply cannot go wrong with a Barker Book!

As with all her previous books in that series “Still Air” by Freya Barker starts with the raw and honest reality of the leading characters. We have known Dino and Pam as side characters in the previous books, so it is like meeting old friends. But while why know them – we do not really KNOW them.

So the dark and sad opening chapters of the book show a side of the character that I would not have expected before, yet I know better from reading the previous books.

Pam always seemed so strong in the previous books but now she shows us her much softer side and we get to hear her story and the reasons why she has been hiding her feelings. She is hiding behind her need to help others and she is desperate to hide from Dino, because he sees too much.

Dino feels as if everything that is dear and important to him is slipping through his fingers. And just as everything looks dark there is Pam … doing what she does best … help others…and in this case him.

Yet he cannot help but sense something under the surface of this woman and while the story unfolds both characters are drawn to each other.

Freya Barker writes real characters with real flaws. Her stories might be a little darker than others but they feel honest and I can only recommend this series to readers that like raw, honest and real in their books.

4.5/5 STARS

It’s so difficult to write a review trying to be original without repeating what has already been said about Freya Barker…

How she creates flawed characters, traumatic pasts and experiences, and how she extracts wonderful love stories from all that ugliness…

Her writing is fabulous, the plot and rhythm just realistic and perfect.

She manages to create beautiful stories from the raw and sometimes unbearable reality.

Dino has a lot to deal with in his family, with an ex-wife addicted and two teenagers.
But Pam’s secret…

It was absolutely heartbreaking how she dedicated her life to help everyone but hide an enormous wound in her heart.

I’m a big fan of Romance genre, I read, like most of people, to escape reality for some hours, so I look for love stories and HEA, serious stuff will always wait for us once we close our book, or switch off the TV, or exit the theater or the stadium…. So yes, this genre is mainly (for me) a way to stay in a warm and happy bubble.

But Freya barker adds a touch of seriousness and tragedy to her stories… and creates such beautiful stories.

And like I said, the author doesn’t do typical romance, about beautiful and /or young people and nice backgrounds. Her characters are far from perfect, physically nor emotionally, neither their routine nor surroundings, but they’re strong and their stories are beautiful despite all the tragedies and difficulties.

Freya Barker is definitely a Must Read author. Another one who should be translated into French already!!!

Still Air by Freya Barker is a romance with heart involving characters who have life experience in the forth and final installment of Portland M.E. series. Dino is trying to hold together his life. His family is broken due to drug use by his wife and his children are starting to show signs of the effects. When thrown together with Pam trying to help his son Dino can't deny the connection and pull he has to Pam. Pam has been helping others for so long she can't see what she really needs is someone to make her feel again. She's always felt a connection to Dino but misinterpreted it for so long now Pam knows it's time to live again for herself.

Emotional, heartbreaking and deep are three things that stuck out to me about this novel. This is my first read by Freya Barker and will not be my last. I can't wait to have time to dive into the previous novels and explore the sub-characters from Still Air. I really felt for Pam & Dino throughout the novel. Pam is such a strong female character with love in her heart and her connection with Dino is undeniable. I adored these two together and Dino really made me feel for him. This novel had everything! I highly recommend this to everyone. Don't be put off that it's the final installment of the series - all it did was move the first three novels up on my TBR list. 5 Stars for Still Air by Freya Barker

I adore Freya Barker's books. I say it every time. Her heroines amaze me. The strength of character and the flaws. They aren't perfect people in any way, which makes them so relate-able. I love reading about hot, alpha men but I love even more reading about the strong women who have been through so much to come out the other side.

Through the first 3 books of this series, both Pam and Dino have been in the background. Always supportive of their friends, both with their own wise ways. Yet, they circled each other and didn't interact much. I was a little surprised to see Freya pair them, and yet, of course. Both hide their own pain in order to help others. Both sacrifice for their friends but won't for themselves. And it's finally their time.

As usual in this series, there are some very heavy moments. Moments that made me catch my breath. But they are dealt with honestly and without gratuitousness. But the result is two people finally finding that they don't have to be last, they can have their own joy.

I love Freya's writing. I have yet to not adore her books. As a woman in my 40's with way too much weight and more than my share of attitude, she gives me hope that my knight in tin foil may just be out there. Do yourself a favor and read this series. All the heroines are worth it.

Still Air, a Portland ,ME #4 by Freya Barker will steal your breath and leave you wanting more. I write this review with many emotions running through my mind and heart. Happiness that we finally get Pam and Dino's story, yet a little sad that it is the last of the series. Freya is going out wih a bang.
We were introduced to these characters in the very first book. I have adored and admired Pam. Her strength and ability to help others through their hard times was inspirational. To see and discover the woman behind the shield of strength was awesome. You will see her fears and discover long kept secrets that explain alot of who Pam is. Those fears made her more real and to watch her try to connect with Dino and his children. Wow! Blew me away!
Now for Dino! Hot, sexy and courageous! . To watch and see his daily struggles will his children showed him to be brave and to have a big heart. He didn't hide from the priblems , he faced them. A real man! A real dad! He will do whay is needed for the ones he loves. His and Pam's journey is a difficult one, yet they each take a chance on a happy ending. They stole my heart and i k ow they will touch yours. Thank you Freya for another amazing story.

Disclaimer : got an ARC of this book in exchange of a review (see below)
There are many things I liked about that book. The first is that it was about mature middle-aged people : how freaking refreshing!!! Pam was a strong, compassionate, intelligent, tall (!!), grey-haired beautiful black woman who I enjoyed getting to know, to love and to respect. Dino was no typical love interest in that he wasn't an uber alpha jerk billionaire with many controlling issues but a working, caring and responsible father with a little bit of a potty mouth and a big heart. They were so well matched and even though they started out by being weary of each other, the frennemies turned hot lovers trope worked rather well. Their story was packed with emotional and heartbreaking moments but it didn't feel over the top, neither did the "obstacles" their relationship encountered. There was drama but the realistic kind that they tried and handled in a mature way. I was profoundly moved by Pam's backstory and reading about her past got my chest tight & my grown ass self close to tear over several pages. I hadn't read the previous books in this series but this one works well as a stand alone. So I highly recommend it.

Fantastic beautiful read!! This entire series has been a pleasure to read as the characters were so beautifully developed. They're real, vulnerable, and perfectly imperfect.
Still Air is no exception.
This is Pam and Dino's story. Heartfelt, emotional, this story emphasis how good things can happen from terrible tragedies.
Pam has been portrayed in the previous books as the cool, collected, independent totally self sufficient woman.
Her fears, insecurities and loneliness, create an armor keeping others at arms length. Here we learn the secrets and demons she's been hiding, living a life believing she's undeserving of love.
That is until Dino. He was the voice of reason, the character that all the other went to for support and guidance. He too is hiding his own painful demons.
I totally did not see this connection coming!
They've known each other from town, but terrible events brought them together.
Theirs is a complicated dynamic and you NEED to read the rest to see how it develops. Friends, lovers or foes?

In love with this book and the whole series. Yet another flawlessly written book by Freya.

As usual with Freyas books, the storyline has some really heartbreaking moments and touches on some traumatic subjects but with sensitivity.

Having met both Pam and Dino in the previous three books, I was eager to read their stories and this was worth the wait. If you have read From Dust, Cruel Waters and Through Fire then you must read this final book in the series. All previous characters are present and everything is nicely tied up. If you haven't read any of the earlier books I recommend reading them all!

I was given this book in exchange for a fair and honest review .
The one thing about Freya Barker's books is that they always have a message that's important. Her writing is always top class, although I found the language a bit too Anglo Saxon (swearing). She always grabs a subject of moral importance and weaves it into an enjoyable and thoughtful story.
I like the way she can change her style to write for the mere mortals, us older folks who still enjoy a bit/ some sexual activity that she incorporates into her stories. Not a mind blowing book but still a good read and worth reading .

Sad that this series has come to an end, but it is fitting that it would end with Pam's story. We have had glimpses of her from the beginning and I am sure we all have been curious about her...and Dino. Freya Barkers writing is deeply emotional and brilliant. Infinite stars!!!!

Superb!

I loved this whole series. It was so down to earth and true to life. The characters pull you in and you feel like you are there living through the experiences with them. I love this authors writing style and look forward to more from her.

We finally get Pam's story!!! And what a story it is! It was obvious from the previous books that Pam had a story, but I admit it wasn't anything that I expected. I loved seeing Dino outside of the kitchen at the bar and reading about the interaction between him and his kids. This was the only book in the series where I felt the kids had a pretty big role in the story (given the ages of these kids versus others in the prior books it made sense). I thought the epilogue was fitting in that it wrapped up several of the other characters from prior books.

My only criticism is that I think Dino needed more of a back story. He is so insightful and empathetic towards others - I wanted to know what his up bringing was like for him to grow up like this. What was his childhood like?

Despite that, it was still an amazing addition to this wonderful series!

"I was completely adrift, caught in a storm of emotions with Christmas knocking on the door, making me feel my loss sharper than before. Today I feel anchored, the air stilled around me."

Pan and Dino have been prevalent characters in the Portland ME series, supporting their friends and being rocks to lean on whilst holding their own cards close to their chests. Seemingly wary and happy to keep their distance; they have been testing the boundaries, circling each other much like alpha hunters trying to determine who is the pack leader. Yet underneath the distance their desire, attraction and soul deep longing is simmering away...two halves of a whole desperate to be reunited. Pam has secrets, a truth she keeps hidden as its her shame, her failure and her motivation. Striving to right the wrongs by preventing history repeating itself over and over again she hopes to balance the scales so that no one else suffers as she does. Pam is deeply affected by her past, her present...and it sculpts her every action. Her pain runs deep as she is guilty of not noticing her own failures before it was too late. Seeing the cycle trying to repeat itself she steps up to save Dino's son despite her need to keep him at arms length as he is a threat to her carefully constructed armour. Dino realises his head has been in the sand too long and he has let his family slowly spin out of control. Calling in reinforcements to help repair the damage he sees beneath the veneer, he sees Pam the woman, the soul drowning in her own pain.

This last book in this series is emotive, raw and at times filled with despair for the things that can't be changed; the senseless mistakes, the bad decisions, poor choices and the irrevocable consequences that has far reaching lasting effects. Seeing behind the strong woman as she has appeared in the previous stories she becomes something far more human and real. Even the hero can be broken too. No longer an enigma Pam is as fragile as the others yet she channels her sorrow to help others. Dino is able to see through her front and her support. Even the strongest need someone...Dino is reeling from the lingering effects of his wife's addiction. With both children spiralling he needs to break the cycle before it is too late. He is a perfectly imperfect man, owning up to his mistakes and trying his best to be the dad, friend and partner he can be. Together these two wounded soldiers in the battle of life forge onwards. This story is heart breaking and heart warming, a perfect balance between the ebb and flow of the tides of life. This author captures the darkness of the nature of humanity and the light, showing the stark comparisons beautifully. A perfect end to this series.

A five star even the brave needs to be loved read.
