PIRATE’S PERFECT PET by Beth Ferry tells the tale of a ship captain seeking the perfect pet.
According to the Perfect Pirate Captain checklist, a ship should have a pet so the captain and his crew set off on a quest for animals. The captain considers a wide range of farm and zoo animals before making a selection at the pet emporium.
Librarians will find this picture book to be useful for read-aloud activities. The colorful illustrations and diverse cast will attract the attention of young readers. The active dialog will keep listeners interested in the story. Teachers may find the book to be a fun way to kick off a unit on pets.

LOVED the illustrations, and the story in this adventurous, character-driven romp. Especially loved the acquisition of his peg leg.

It's been weeks since we returned this book to the library but we still quote it with our daughter all the time. So much fun! Highly recommend!

Seriously, this is one of the funniest children's books I have ever read. I LOVED IT! I can't wait to share this one in the classrooms for a read aloud.

Captain Crave is a courageous pirate, with a mighty ship, and a faithful crew. The only thing he doesn't have is a pet. So he and his crew head for land to seek the perfect pet. They caused quite the commotion, as good pirates should as they searched on the beach, on a farm, and at the zoo with no luck. Their last stop was the Pet Emporium, and that's where they stumble across the best pet ever.

Did Beth Ferry sit down and think, "Hmmm...what are the two most over-used tropes in children's literature these days? Pirates and pets...? Yeah, I'm going to do them together! And it's going to be goooood!" And damn if it isn't. Oh, and Matt Myers's art is fantastic. Aye, so much to love here.

very cute and brightly colored book. Used for a library storytime, had to leave out bits here and there due to length, but kids enjoyed.

Minus one star because the captain’s hook is on his left hand for the first two pages and then magically on his right hand the rest of the book. Unacceptable.

This is a cute book about a pirate with a to-do list. Captain Crave has everything checked off his list except a pet. This begins the search for the perfect pet for the pirate. They storm the beach, plunder a farm, invade the zoo, and finally stumble into a pet store. After some dialog with a parrot who caused quite some commotion, the pirate discovered his perfect pet was right before his eyes. And that is how the classic pirate pet became the parrot.
This book is colorful and entertaining. It is a bit of a difficult read at times with the pirate language, but it allows for the reader to get into character.
This book can be used in speech with pronunciation and speech sounds.

After receiving a message in a bottle from his mum, Pirate Crave realizes he is missing a pet from the checklist she sent. With his first mate and crew’s help they set shore to the beach, farm, and zoo, before they found the perfect pet at a pet shop--a commotion causing, pooping in eye parrot. Students will laugh at the high jinks, and allows teachers to create sequencing activities with the different places and/or animals mentioned. Gorgeous acrylic and oil illustrations create bright animals and characters alike with expansive landscapes.

Audience: Grade school
Illustrations: Bright and slightly reminiscent of David Shannon
Plot / Review: When Captain Crave gets a letter from his dear old mom, he takes his crew on a quest to pick out the perfect pet. From the beach to the zoo, only one pet will do. Kids will laugh out loud from start to finish, and this is a perfect pick for both storytime and one-on-one reads.

This one is great if you're looking for a story for storytime that naturally provides you with the opportunity to create voices. There are 2 pirate voices, a narrator, and a parrot voice that really allow kids to listen in.

Brave Captain Crave received a note from his mummy with a checklist that she found of "how to be your best buccaneer." All he was missing was the peg leg and the perfect pet. Funny story as he searched for the perfect pet. Fabulous illustrations.

I can't wait to read this book aloud to my group this summer on a program based on pets. I'm going to perfect my pirate voice. I hope that the group enjoys my performance of the book as much as I enjoyed reading it.

I liked the absurdity of an 18th century pirate looking for a pet in modern times. I liked how part of the story was communicated in the graphics so you needed to pay attention to the illustrations and the text to understand the story.

I love the painterly illustration style and what a fun adventure! The animated face of the skull on the captain's hat, the chameleon, the pirate with the peg hand... appreciate all the attention to detail and humor. Bravo!

Not great. Plus the illustrations are kinda creepy.

I asked Kate to read this and then tell me about it. She did okay—could have been more specific, but there were lots of details (I read it later). Read to all the girls the next day.
Clever wordplay and use of pirate vocabulary. 3.5 stars.

Complete pirate mayhem as this motley crew search for the perfect pet.

Always fun to explain to kids the details of how a lion can eat a man’s leg cleanly right off and make him get a peg leg to compensate. Seriously though, this book is a lot of fun.
