Action packed

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review

I enjoyed these books so much. I felt so much for these kids and what they are going through. How will the world end? What if you have to move forward on your own and your only a kid yourself? Had me on the end of my seat the whole time. Could not wait to find out what was next! Its part sci-fi. part thriller, full of heart racing, heart breaking action.

Post apocalyptic story, with a realistic feel to it. I throughly enjoyed listening.

The narrator did an excellent job. Very pleasant to listen to, emotions were spot on.

Over all 5 stars for me. Great all around. Looking forward to hearing more!

When a Chinese bioweapon kills almost every adult in America who does not have Chinese heritage, teenager Isaac Race finds himself leading a small group of not yet adults in search of a safe haven from the invading Chinese army. I enjoyed the story quite a lot. There’s plenty of action and some very good character development, but in the end there was not quite enough world building for me to give the series a top ranking.

So let’s start with the best part of the series, the protagonist, Isaac. A victim of tragedy even before the plague, Isaac is a very sympathetic character who is faced with believable moral quandaries as he tries to navigate his way through a world that has fallen apart. Like most real human beings, he has a hard time accepting that he now exists in a dog-eat-dog world and is reluctant to use force at all, much less lethal force. He also makes some bad decisions, but they are credible bad decisions, so they enrich the character rather than sour him for the reader. His supporting cast is also likable which makes Medbury’s willingness to kill them off as the series progresses all the more painful.

The action reminded me strongly of plots that would fit in well with The Walking Dead with the Chinese army substituting for the zombies. You only have to think about Lord of the Flies to realize that other survivors would have to be treated with caution as not everyone would be altruistic in this post-apocalyptic America. These conflicts added considerably to the tension of the story and added a lot to my enjoyment of the plot. It was only in the world building that I kept finding myself asking questions that I’m not certain are fair to ask.

The biggest of those questions is: if the Chinese did succeed in creating a highly contagious virus that killed off all adults who are not of Chinese ethnicity, that suggests that North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Australia (plus the populations of a heck of a lot of islands) would quickly be almost completely depopulated. The world economy would then crash—including the Chinese economy. Global industry would come to a halt and it seems likely that in short order China also would be in a state of industrial collapse. So I don’t know how realistic it is to expect the Chinese to be able to sustain a prolonged invasion of the entire United States—and I’m also not certain in these circumstances how important it would be for them to invade in the first place. After all, a bunch of teenagers—even with the support of Asian-Americans—just aren’t going to be able to save the modern industrial United States from sinking into utter barbarism. China is now the world’s only super power—at least until its own industry grinds to a halt. It could afford to wait to invade.

This is the kind of concern that the reader needs to bury deep and forget about it—and for the most part I was able to do that. After all, Isaac doesn’t really know what’s going on in the rest of the world. Maybe it is collapsing. I guess I’ll have to keep reading the series to find out.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

A deadly virus attack on the US has wiped out the adult population and has left the children fumbling to survive, against the elements and an invading force.

This story was well thought out and executed. The pandemic was articulated well and was designed with knowledge of the human body and seems to this layman as definitely plausible. There are no glaring issues with it, from my understanding and while one could nit pick for issues with dispersal patterns or reach, etc. On a whole, it stands well on its own.

The narrative itself is also subject to much of the same detail as the virus. It seems well thought out, and with the exception of some too well timed occurrences, there are no major issues. The world is built well and the scenery is well described. The action is plausible. The planning is cool headed and coherent.

This is one of the few complaints I have with this book (books?). The adults are dead and this follows around some teens. They are amazing teens. Not indestructible or genius, but certainly they operate above the level they should, and know things that seem unlikely. For example, the main character is 15 and the year, while never specifically said is somewhere between 2022 and 2027. The main character at one point hears a song that came out in 2013 that he never really liked. While he could have heard the song at any point in his childhood, it was a big hit that died out kind of quickly and he would have been unlikely to have experienced it in any meaningful way as a kid born 2007 and on.

Another character talks about President Clinton being codenamed "Eagle", again, would have been about a decade before they were born, and would likely not be known anymore than someone born in the 80's would know about Gerald Fords codename.

The most glaring thing for me was that the main character kept saying "someone 'and me'" . Alone this is fine, until he dropped the information that his mom was an English teacher, and that's why he knew big words. I can attest, from first hand experience, the son of an English teacher says "someone 'and I'" .

All in all, an enjoyable listen. This is definitely worth an audible credit, for the set of 3 books. I don't think they would be worth a credit each, not because of quality, they are well written, but because of length. 3 books are about 16 hours, which makes them around 5+ hours each.

The narrator was very good at conveying emotion and tone. It was very well performed, for the most part. He does a varied enough work for several male characters to be all in a conversation and to be able to pick them all out. Female voices are passable, but need work.

If you're looking for a good post Apocalyptic read, this would make a good choice.

The plot of this sees anyone over a certain age die from a virus that is unleashed upon America. Very few adults survived so the kids are left to fend for themselves. A 15 year old is determined to find a safe place and sets out to find it when he hears a broadcast over the radio. Along the way he meets up with friends and foes alike and the "safe" place they set out to find, might not be all it looks to be. The plot itself was fairly fast paced and easy to become involved in. It was quite scary to read about how and who set the virus loose, also about why they did it!! It was plausible and gave me a chill down my spine while reading it. Each book ends in a cliffhanger so I was glad these were bundled together!

The characters were all easy to like, though at times I forgot they were supposed to be teenagers because at times they acted like they were older. Also Isaac was a bit too good at things! At 15, my sons were typical teens, I really don't think they would be as level headed as Isaac was. He was able to take charge of himself fairly quickly, were as I would picture most 15 year olds panicking or doing some silly stuff before they finally get themselves together. I think this added to the fact that most of the characters felt older than they were. Other than that, I enjoyed the group and seeing them develop and grow with each encounter.

In all, an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next bundle. I need to see what happens to the rest of the gang.

Adam Barr was good. He was clear and concise, with a likable voice. The only problem I found was that he dropped the characters voice at times during dialogues. They all started sounding the same and I was confused about who was talking.

I’ve been on an apocalypse binge for 2 maybe 3 years now and I’m running out of good shit lol so when I jump into something like this I literally do a happy dance. When it doesn’t take ten chapters or two hours listening time to get into the damn story. It’s like from the first page you’re invested in these characters. It was so well done! The story pace, the action scenes, character development, everything! The characters were so likable, I hurt when they hurt. Perfect balance between action and plot. And I think did a good job of keeping our heroes teenagers. This is an awesome apocalypse story to get lost in! And there’s no preppers hallelujah! That’s what I love about apocalypse stories. I want the fresh story when the shit goes down and civilization falls, author does a great job making it believable being these characters are teenagers. I freaking loved it and I’m dying for the rest to come out on audio. Sadly I have no actual reading time. If I picked them up I know I’ll be up reading till 3 am and I’m too old for that shit. Don’t miss this one guys. Reading or audio. Narrator was fabulous! Distinct voices for different characters and gave them life I love him :). I requested to review this story but didn’t wanna wait so I bought it myself and reviewed it cause it’s the shit. Read it peeps ;)

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review

Spoilers ahead:
This series is set in a post apocalyptic world where due to biological warfare, disease has eradicated nearly all the adults in America leaving teenagers to survive against foreign enemies. We soon find that not only are there foreign invaders to worry about there are also domestic threats for power between groups as well.

This series reminded me of worlds such as "I am Legend" and "The Walking Dead" where you get to see the limits to which a character will evolve to survive in a world with limited options and few survivors.

I enjoyed the voice the author gives to our main character Isaac, and I had an easy time getting attached to the different characters we meet along the way in the book. At times I would prefer the story be more fast-paced, however it does a good job of keeping me guessing and throwing in plot twists. Overall I am happy with the series and will likely continue to read them all and would recommend them to anyone that enjoys post-apocalyptic thrillers.

I have to say as a fairly recent convert to the post apocalyptic thriller genre, I was pleasantly surprised at how well this set of books truly is!

First, it was really great to see that the starting point was not an EMP attack.

Second, I really, really love the protagonist, Isaac. Of course, he is the glue that holds the series together I think the author did a pretty good job in giving Isaac’s history that explains his personality“Quirks.“

I think the plot, minus some artistic leeway, was very plausible and believable. I cannot put the books down! Love the fact that on point, it was pretty fast pace… I’m glad I listened to this audio box set

I was given a free copy of the audiobook to review. Honestly 3 stars is only because it wasn't my cup of tea. This is the first time I've read a book in this genre, and it just didn't keep my attention. But if you enjoy this kind of book, you'd love it! It's well written and the narration is great.

The tale begins with an interesting introduction describing a virus that has eliminated 99.6% of North America’s adult population, leaving the young to survive on their own. From that point, the story evolves into a series of conversations between characters on what to do and where to go. The action did not pick up until late in book one when another group of survivors appeared to rescue our hapless youngsters. This new fledgling militia group of sorts began to turn the story around renewing my interest. China has claimed responsibility for the virus and makes its intentions known to invade the United States. Our group of survivors must not only avoid the Chinese as they come across them but also gangs and others with ill intent. Book two chronicles our group’s travel across two states in search of supplies and safety. Introduction to the sought after Safe Haven closes out the volume. Book three delves into the mysterious Safe Haven. The government facility is not as it seems. Isaac, Luke, and Ben risk all to find out what is really going on in Safe Haven. This audiobook was given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

Although this is written as 3 books, it's really just 1 story. The first 2 books, especially the first book, end in a cliffhanger, so bundling these 3 books together is appropriate and necessary. The characters are compelling and the story is gripping, but the action is too manufactured. Adam Barr's narration is quite satisfactory.
