Got the Life

Librarian's note: There are Alternate Cover Editions for this edition of this book here, here and here.

Nicki Sosebee wants her first headline, but she doesn’t want it to read “Reporter found dead.”

Since leaving school years earlier, Nicki Sosebee has long since given up on the notion of The American Dream, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t still have dreams of her own. She realized early on that her college degree isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on, but she also knows that she doesn’t want to work for minimum wage the rest of her life.

She wants MORE.

To get there, she’s been learning the ropes as a novice reporter for her hometown newspaper, but it doesn’t take her long to find out that her naïveté is not doing her any favors. That’s where her best friend Sean Ramsey comes in. He gives her advice when her instincts steer her wrong and he supports her when she needs it.

Oh…and he’s HOT.

She’s had it bad for Sean, ever since The Night eight years ago, the one time they hooked up and had the time of their lives, but she ruined it when she accidentally called him her ex-boyfriend’s name in the heat of passion. And they’ve been friends only—and hands off—ever since.

Nicki’s currently investigating a story that she thinks might result in her first headline. One of Winchester’s bad boys has been locked up for arson, but as Nicki digs deeper, she finds it’s not just a case of trying to set fire to a house…and between being seduced by a bad ass biker and potentially getting caught by the bad guys before she can write that headline, Nicki starts to wonder if she’s really GOT THE LIFE.

Love this book!

Nicki Sosebee is a no-name reporter but hopes to change that with investigating an arson crime that she hopes will put her story on the front page of The Winchester Tribune and turn her from a no-name reporter to a well known real reporter.

Being a freelance reporter doesn't quite pay the bills so she also works a waitressing job at a pizzeria. While working there one night she meets the gorgeous biker Carlos and things get HOT.

Nikki also has a best friend named Sean who she's known since before high school. There's a lot of sexual tension between these two but because of situations from the past and present, they can't seem to get to where Nicki would like them to be.

The book is written in 3rd person which is my absolute favorite. I loved all the characters! Nicki wasn't an annoying heroine which is something I've come to expect from this author.

How does Carlos and Sean fit into this investigation? You'll have to read the book to find out.

Great read! Looking forward to book two!

I really liked this! It wasn't exactly a mystery, it wasn't exactly a romantic-suspense, but it was sort of a combination of the two. See, Nicki Sosebee is a reporter who does the court circuit. She is in the courtroom the day Jason Edwards is up for bail for arson. Nicki knows this is big news for her town so she does some digging on this and gets into some trouble. Hence the mystery-suspense part. As for the romance part of this book, well, Nicki is in love with her best friend, Sean. I'm curious where things will go with them because I suspect Nicki isn't the only one with feelings in this relationship.

This was a great introduction to the series and a good way to spend the day!

“Got the Life: Nicki Sosebee #1” by Jade C. Jamison
5 out of 5 stars

Nicki had me from her very first sentence: “Why do all the bad boys have to be so f**king cute?” In “Got the Life”, the first book in the Nicki Sosebee series, you can find humor, drama, intrigue, and lots of great sex! Embarking on a career in investigative journalism, our heroine hangs out in the criminal court looking for a story to tell. In the small county of Winchester true crime is few and far between, but Nicki stumbles head first into a case that tests her skills and throws her into danger.

I love that Nicki never takes herself too seriously. Whether it’s dealing with her fellow employees at Napoli (the pizzeria where she works full time) or trying to earn favor with her boss at the Tribune Newspaper, she does so with a lovely humor. She is not bogged down with thoughts of grandeur and appreciates the value of hard work and determination. The mentoring relationship she has with her newspaper boss, Neal, is almost parental. He has taken Nicki under his wing and sees the potential she possesses. I like that he isn’t gruff and seems to genuinely care about helping her achieve success.

The drama comes in the form of Sean, her super hot best friend since high school. Their chemistry is on fire and despite their “friends only” status you can feel the tension that surrounds their every interaction. I like Sean…he’s smart, down to earth, and loyal. He’s manly without being aggressive and seems to ground Nicki well. I could understand her longing for a more intimate relationship with him and Jamison does a good job of laying subtle clues that indicate Sean might just be doing a little wishful thinking of his own.

Nicki definitely knows what she wants in the bedroom and isn’t afraid to go after it. She finds an exciting partner in Carlos and lets us know that even though she longs for Sean, she isn’t waiting around on him to satisfy her needs. I loved her confidence, her adventurous spirit, and her excitement in going after what she wants.

Her excitement isn’t just limited to her personal life. She approaches her reporting with a zeal that is contagious. She possesses a great intuition and sees beyond the surface to the story beneath. As she ventures from reporter to amateur sleuth, continuing even into dangerous territory, we are right along with her…and rooting for her to solve the case!

As always, Jamison has a knack for writing her characters very realistically. Nicki could be your sister, your daughter, your friend. She’s not glamorous or her lifestyle far out of reach. She’s everywoman and that makes her relatable. Jamison’s men are just as real, with depth, and seem attainable. I look forward to seeing what Nicki’s next adventure will be and how her relationship with Sean continues to develop. I would definitely recommend this book to all!!

Series: Nicki Sosebee #1
Category /Genre: Romance
Received from: Jade C. Jamison in exchange for an honest review
Recommended for: 18 + due to adult situations and sexual content
Grammar/editing: A – near perfect

Nicki Sosebee (sohs-bee) is a rookie reporter chasing her goal to have a front page headline. She has the sexual ethics of a man and the mouth of a sailor. At 30 years old, she's working three jobs, living a life of independence, and enjoying one-night stands between boyfriends. When she becomes part of the story she's chasing, she now has to worry about surviving it.

The guys she dates will always be boyfriends and nothing more, sometimes even less, because Nicki's heart wants Sean. For example, she hooks up with Carlos, a one-night (extended into two) Latin lover who calls her "mi dulzura." Doesn't "sweet thing" sound even cuter in another language? Sean's been her best friend for most of her life, but each foray into making it something more ends in disaster, such as "the night that must never be mentioned again." Even so, neither wants to lose their friendship and regularly set aside the hurts and jealousies.

Alright, ya'all know that Jade is one of my favorite authors. She even said she would claim me as a sister. I have read the four books in the Bullet series and a couple of stand-alones. I have promised her a whole week to catch up on as many of her older works as possible. We agreed on the Nicki Sosebee series first, so I started with this one today. I absolutely could not put this down. I am sitting here looking at page one of DEAD and reminding myself that this review has to be written before I can continue reading. This is always a problem for me, just because I do love reading so much. It is especially difficult for me today, because I know I have seven more books in this series (and #9 will be released soon after I complete these). I'm hoping to complete the eight I have in time for the cover reveal of FAKE on February 24th.

For all of the time that I have been following Jade, I have been pronouncing Nicki's last name incorrectly. Since we who have done so are made fun of in the book, I am challenging Jade to pronounce MY last name! She has three days, and then I'll open it to all of you. Perhaps there will be a prize!!

I received this book (and the other 7 books ) from the author for an honest review. Oh friends Honest you shall get. Ok sooo you MAY have heard me talk up this author a time or two or 500 because she is awesome!! Her writing is so amazing you get taken to the places she is writing about. You become the characters. I mean, I read Bullet by her in March and AM STILL in an hangover from it...yes it was that good.

Well my fine friends this series is knocking my socks off as well. I love Nicki and how she has abso noooo filter at times......prime example was after her best friend and one time lover Sean kisses her. They don't discuss the night of sex but she will not let this kiss go because she kinda has a thing for him..wink wink....... When she blows him off a day later and he says 'Where is my hug?' She responds with *snickers* "Hug? Why don't you just french me again?" and storms off. BAHAHAHHAHA....I friggin love her!!

ok so here is the low down of this story....IF you like action, heart strings being pulled, hawt ass sex and a bunch of laughs then this is a book/series for YOU my friends. Nicki is a college drop out and she has a bff named Sean but i call him Mr. Hottie Mechanic Come Give Me A Tune Up.....ok I know ridic.....tell me something someone else hasn't already told me. Well Nicki is working a bunch of part time jobs to pay the bills. She wants to be a reporter. The whole book is about her investigating the leads to the story to finally get a front page by-line. There is a mystery as to arson and criminal gang involvement....ooohhh you say...yes I Reply. Seriously I cant even begin to tell ya how abso amazeballs this series is....trust me peps and buy it. You will be super stoked.

Nicki Sosebee is for sure my all time favorite character ever written by Jade C. Jamison. She fun, spunky, has a lot of fun, and most of all gives us a lot of mystery. Jade has written nine books about Nicki so far and i hope she isn't done!! I want to keep reading about Nicki's exciting life. Read about what new stories she will be reporting about, and for sure find out what happens with her and the man she loves. Nicki's best friend, Sean was the one man she wanted to make things work with, the man she wanted to love. Only thing was they were somehow stuck in that friend zone. So while trying to get her career and get the guy Nicki blew off steam with other men. Only in this series NIcki tended to make steam, Jade sure did make sure we knew Nicki sizzles. Things always seem to get messy with Nicki's life, but she always finds a way out. Her life is definitely an entertaining one, and it takes you on a wild ride with no stopping.

Got the Life (Nicki Sosebee #1)
The first book goes into detail of Nicki's life and how she is struggling to be a real reporter. Taking my multiple stories to help get her on the front page news. At the same time Nicki was trying to change her relationship with her best friend, Sean. Nicki wanted to bad to move beyond the friend zone, Sean could be the love of her life only Nicki had no idea how to make it happen. So in the meantime she took up the offers of other gorgeous men she was able to snatch up. In this book Nicki hits her first big story, only it just might cost her her life.

AHHHH...another series that I am going to be devouring by Jade Jamison...this woman knows how to write to make me happily entertained!!!
Nicki Sosebee...2 syllables NOT 3...LOL...is a funny, tough, sexy vixen who knows what she wants but doesn't always get it right away (Sean)... but she works at it and between her reporting job and waiting tables at a pizza joint, she meets some pretty scary and HOT as hell men. I really liked this first book (got it as part of a 4 pack) and I am eagerly starting book 2. Guess I'll end up buying all the rest of them after I finish book 4 because I can already tell I'm hooked...like your favorite t.v. series you can't miss an episode of. If you like Jamison's storytelling, and you are in the mood for some light, quick, sexy reads...grab this series. NICKI rules!!!

This is a fun introduction to Nick Sosebee and her circle of friends, most specifically, her best friend Sean. She secretly has a serious crush on her best friend, but their romantic relationship is doomed because of a misunderstanding eight years ago. There are hints that Sean might feel the same about Nicki, but it is frustratingly opaque, and even by the end, we still don’t know how he really feels.

I’m not sure if there’s a classification for this type of book. It’s not quite a cozy mystery because Nicki’s life is way too sexually explicit for that, but the mystery involved is not super high stakes. I’m not suggesting that the threat of death is not high stakes, but the feel of it is not because the reader never really thinks something bad will happen to the leading characters. There’s no sinister villain stalking Nicki and plotting his/her attack.

Nicki is likable, although there's something tragic about her too. In love with Sean, she fills her life with meaningless flings with men she may never see again. She swears she is against marriage and children, but there’s a certain element of “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.” I get the sense that it’s really more about what she thinks she deserves. For now, she thinks she deserves to have hot sex with a variety of men, but even she admits it is to distract her from her feelings about Sean. I found it frustrating and hope this doesn’t go on for too long.

All the Stars for No News is Good News

I'll admit that though this book has a new name and a sleek new cover, the basic content isn't new to me. Nicki Sosebee has been my slacker detective BFF for a number of years, but it's been a really long time since I have gone back to the beginning, which would be this book. I've been waiting for the final book in the series for what feels like ages, though bittersweet. Ms. Jamison's updates to the series are a perfect excuse to read them all again on the precipice of saying goodbye. 😢 But until I have to face that moment, I plan to enjoy each and every one of them along the way.

Meeting Nicki and Sean all over again has refreshed so much for me, and what probably hit me the most was just how quickly this first book flies by. It's definitely one of those "I can't put down" and "read in one sitting" type of books - the whole series is, really. I think there were 6 or 7 out when I finally picked them up (after being a fan of Jade's rockstar books first - still amongst my favorites in that genre) and I now remember reading all of those on a weekend road trip back then. I think I am a little jealous of those of you that this is the first time for - you'll soon be able to binge the entire series! What a ride it will be!

Speaking of bingeing - Netflix? Amazon? I would absolutely binge a film version of this series! Picturesque Colorado mountain small town with big city type crime and a cute, quirky, fledgling reporter uncovering it all? Not to mention her smoking hot best friend that she would love to have benefits with? I think you've got a winner here!

Obviously this gets my highest recommendations. Fun and thriller may not be words that seem like they should go together but I can't think of two better words to sum this up.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

So my BFF and Partner in crime has been after me to read about Nicki and “her” Sean forever. Now the day has come and I read the first Nicki Sosebee and now I’m asking myself why did I wait so long? Oh and just to let you know Sean is now mine just saying but we don’t need to let my BFF know this for now.

Nicki Sosebee is a no name reporter who wants to make it big. She goes to the court hearings hoping for that one big break that will do it for her. She wants her article to be the headline one day and she is determined to make it happen. Nicki has no filter says whatever whenever it hits her tongue. Got to love that in a girl! Nicki’s BFF and go to guy is Sean. When things happen in her life she runs to him to share it and when Nicki needs him he is right there to help her. Nicki has had a crush on Sean since high school but ever since the one night that they shale never talk of again Sean has placed Nicki in the “friend zone”. Although if Sean would ever step over that friend line he created Nicki would be all for that.

I enjoyed getting to know Nicki. This was a quick read and once I started I couldn’t put it down. The drama and suspense in this had me biting my nails. I kept thinking at one point how is Nicki going to get herself out of this predicament. Now I need to get Dead to continue the Saga of what is Nicki’s world. I also need to know if there are more feelings hidden deep inside of Sean for Nicki and will he let them out.

Nicki is a very interesting character. She has multiple jobs, and seems very confident in herself. I found the book to be nicely paced, but a little predictable. I found my self going "I bet this will happen" and then it does. I did like the twist toward the end. I found myself frustrated with Nicki and Sean's relationship. It was like they were dancing around each other. I enjoyed the scenes between Nicki and Charlos, but would have liked to see more. I don't want to get into too much detail because it is an interesting book. I can't wait to read the next book! I would recommend this book to others because it has a nice plot and story line. The character is interesting and engaging.

I just found another series by Jade Jamison that I can't wait to read more. This was a interesting story with small town crime and newbie reporter. Nicki gets herself into some crazy situations following a story that she is writing for the local paper. I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see how everything goes with Nicki and Sean or what other things Nicki gets herself into. I received this book from the author in return for a honest review.

Interesting Story

Surprisingly, I really liked this story. I plan to read the whole series. This book is not a cliffhanger. The mystery is complete. But the characters will carry on.

Niki lives by herself in a small apartment. She has three jobs. She is a freelance reporter who dreams of being added to the staff and seeing her stories on the front page. She works in the evening in a busy restaurant. And she sells beauty products in her spare time. Niki is a woman of her generation. She can cuss like a sailor, likes heavy metal and tatoos, and thinks nothing of one night stands. But I liked her. She was a good person, kind to people, and she worked hard. She is also secretly in love with her best friend Sean, who owns a motorcycle repair shop. In this first story, Nicki is hot on the trail of a good story and finds herself in a heap of trouble.

I really liked this book. I liked Niki and Sean, I liked Niki 's family, and I liked the mystery. But what I really, really liked was that the whole series is on Kindle Unlimited and I can read them all for free.

Despite my low rating, I recommend this series. See below for my thoughts.

So, I hated the books in this series except towards the end, when the heroine started to gain depth and the story really started to come together. I now understand what the author was doing in the first half of the series, introducing the characters. I still disliked the heroine though, her naïveté and neediness was the behavior of a 20 year old, not a 30 year old. As the series went on her maturity made the books far better.

Relationships
: the author did a great job detailing the history of the characters relationships, but in the present they were shallow, or maybe seemed that way because some key conversations would have added so much.

Disappointing

Immature 30-year old wanna-be reporter sheds her clothes at the instant a fairly nice male notices her. Hope her boy friend finally figures out she loves him so he can maybe help keep her from continuing her stupid moves.

I'm a fan of Jade C. Jamison. I love her Bullet series and her Vagabond series. When asked to read her Nicki Sosebee series, I was skeptical. It's a totally different sub-genre than what I'm used to from the author. How was someone who writes rock stars so darn well going to be able to write about a reporter? Absolutely no offense to the author meant, I just haven't read anything but rock star from Jade, so I was afraid...What if this series wasn't as amazing to me as her others? Well, turns out I didn't have to worry about that because this book was fantastic! I haven't read many reporter-based books, so it did take a little while for me to psych myself up for it. Then once I started reading it, it took me a few chapters to get invested. But, as with Jade's other books, she pulled me right in. It ended up being a fast-paced, page-turner. I enjoyed reading about Nicki and the cast of supporting characters. Her trysts are fun and exciting. I was intrigued by the story Nicki was working for the paper and loved how this first book in the series kind of revolved around that time frame in her life. I imagine the following books will follow suit. All in all, this was a great read that I'd definitely pick up again. Oh! And Jade did include some musical reference in this book, which made me smile!! Jade C. Jamison completely amazes me with her writing. She's definitely one of my go-to, I'll read anything by, authors.
