Oh yeah, this was the kind of quickie the doctor ordered. ;)

Mason and Kate are engaged to be married, but things have been strange and tense between them lately. Mason has been keeping his distance - even sexually - and Kate fears that he doesn't love her anymore. Confused, she allows his sleezy cousin Bryce to flirt with her, hoping to make Mason jealous. Needless to say, her little plan works like a charm and Mason wastes no time to claim her, in a way that she'll never forget...

Oh my, I needed a bucket of ice to lower my temperature while I was reading this book. The love scenes were steaming hot, mostly because the author convinced me that Mason and Kate were meant to be together. I don't know how to explain this, as there wasn't much room for character development - remember, this is a quickie - but somehow I felt like I knew Mason and Kate well enough to care for them and believe in their HEA. Well done, Ms. Adams!

Note: The sex scenes in this book are front and center in the story, as expected, but they're "harmless". I mean, I wouldn't go as far as to say they're PG-13 - hey, this is an EC release, LOL - but readers who are faint of heart can enjoy it without fear. There's no oral sex, no "backdoor loving" and no toys were damaged in the making of this book.

Trapped by circumstances of birth has long been a feature of literature. Shakespeare wrote of it often, Romeo and Juliet being the most famous example that comes quickly to mind, as did others. Usually, the story went along the lines of a member of royalty or some ruling class being attracted to a member of the lower or non-ruling class. Usually the interest is reciprocated and the two potential lovers have to figure out whether the risks, often a painful death, are worth it. Familial obligations, societal obligations, and good old peer pressure often serve as foils keeping potential lovers apart as well as that nasty painful death thing. What can only be hinted at in mainstream fiction is a perfect story idea for erotica and executed wonderfully in this engrossing work.

The conflict in roles and obligations to family and society is clear and easily defined as detailed here:
"He was lusting after a woman he had no business lusting after. She was a Breeder Slave. A runner. He was a Hitman. A killer. They were from two different worlds."
And that is precisely the problem. Jacob, eldest son of Simon Romero, a Plantation Owner, is a Hitman for his family. In this world of the far future, slavery is permissible and Hannah is a Breeder Slave. As a runaway, it is Jacob's job and his responsibility to his family to find her since she has run away and kill her. If he does not kill her, his family will hire others to kill him to clear their honor.

For Hannah, she has run away from what she was born and raised to do. Following in her Mother's footsteps, she was to be chained and used in a Breeder Barn by the many sons of Plantation Owner Simon Romero until she became pregnant. She would keep her first born for herself and then she would be made pregnant again and again by forced sex with the Romero brothers. After every birth she would give up the child and be used again sexually as soon as she was able to get pregnant again. It is a life she did not want and she fled following the whispered instructions of other breeding slaves to find the Underground Railroad.

The only man she has ever wanted was Jacob and now he has found her on a windswept beach in Northern Oregon. Instead of killing her right away as he was supposed to, he tries to talk with her and soon that leads to a physical confrontation. She breaks away and is chased and finally caught again. He knows what he must do but at the same time he has been in love with her for years and the last thing he wants to do is to kill her.

She feels the same way about him but neither one has seen the other in years and now they don't know each other like they did once long ago. People change and neither one trusts the other but neither has a real choice since the consequences for each could be disastrous not only for themselves but for others. A desperate bargain is struck. In exchange for sharing his bed with him for twenty-four hours he agrees to let her go.

What follows is an erotic tale where the sexual want between the two takes a backseat to character development as they learn more and more about each other as they run for their lives. They also learn who their true friends are as they struggle to stay ahead of others who are sent to finish the job Jacob started and to reclaim family honor.

This is a very enjoyable read and well worth your time. While the erotic is a major component of the work overall, it also features strong writing, character development and plenty of other action to keep the work moving forward. This is a very good book and well worth the time to read.

Short, hot and cute novella! Was hoping we’d get a POV from Mason, but it works well even without it. The blurb seemed to suggest that he was showing a new side to himself, which… he does, but it’s not really discussed as something that he has never dared to show her before. It’s more like they just add a new dynamic into their sex life. Like, it’s not that their sex life was bad they just needed to fix up their communication issues - and so this doesn’t change their sex life, just adds another element. Which was quite sweet really.

I think this doesnt qualify as a book. Maybe more a short story. I didn't really like reading such a short story that didn't have enough of build up or stuff

Kate and Mason are due to get married in about a week. But they haven't been intimate in three weeks! Kate thinks that Mason doesn't desire her anymore but she's afraid to say anything for fear that she is right. One day, Mason comes home to his cousin hitting on Kate and enough is enough: He shows her just how much he loves her, not just through sex but by claiming her. He is finally the possessive man she's longed to see, not the calm, cool, collected math professor. A week later, Mason and Kate get married.

This was a very sexy, cute, steamy novella. I'm glad that I read it. Despite the thing being only 55 pages, I really ended up liking Kate and Mason, and I think they work well together. I wish it could have been longer!

Favorite Quote:
"He’s a selfish boy," she said quietly. "Why would I even consider him when I have a man like you?"

There is a lot of story here in this short story. I think why I enjoyed this story quite a bit was that it didn't follow a format that I expected and for quite awhile I was wondering what would set off the 'claiming'.

I thought the characters were cute, and their story about how they got together was cute. I also liked how the two resolved their differences ;). This is good and satisfying for a short story.

Well I am not a huge lover of these types of books but I read them as easy fillers for when my brain is overloaded and I just want something nice to read.

The sex scenes get a little boring - I am not prude by any stretch and don't mind the sex scenes at all but I do like a good story as well and this is a fast read and quite a good read that you will read in almost one sitting.

After liking The Hold so much I decided to try one of the author's novellas. This was truly awful. Badly written and overly simplistic.

Quick sweet and sexy.

Kate and Mason are going to be married in a week. Kate is feeling insecure thinking Mason doesn't desire her as much as she does him.

A lovely little sexy read.
