This book puts the whole relatively recent vote for Scottish independence into perspective. It shows how England and Scotland have a long history of battles where thousands died, all in the name of the Scots trying to be free and the English trying to block them.

It's also very evident from the material in the book that the Scottish movement for independence had to face two major foes, only one of which was the English. The other foe, just as problematic as the other was the in-fighting among the Scottish nobility with an almost constant struggle for power, a struggle which weakened the Scottish movement and may very well have cost them their independence.

The person known as Braveheart is in the book along Edward I who ordered all Jews kicked out of England. He also wanted control of Scotland and the tax money he could get out of it. The fighting on both sides was vicious with many towns virtually wiped out, whether or not there was an actual battle or just a scorched-Earth type of thing.

The book also shows the principle that those with the better technology will eventually win. The English technological superiority was in their long-bow. The arrows could decimate and attacking group of Scots. (Although why the Scots didn't just make Roman-type shields is beyond me.)

The book also shows that England honored its treaties with Scotland just as well as the American government honored its own treaties with Native Americans.

There's also a long list of references in this book. A very, very interesting book.

A fairly well done overview of both the First and Second Wars of Scottish Independence, with a heavy focus on William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Edwards I, II and III and David II. There are a few places where the exact same paragraph is repeated and the overall work is a bit repetitive. It does clearly point out the ongoing internal battles within Scotland and how they have impacted Scotland's efforts to be free and independent.

A comprehensive history of the quest for Scotland’s independence under William “Braveheart” Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Battling both the English monarchy and other Scottish nobility, these two larger-than-life figures weathered repeated victories and defeats in the continuing quest for independence in the 13th/14th centuries.

Enlightening

An interesting book that tells the sad story of Scotland being let down by men who were self serving and short sighted and yet we have learned nothing

More fascination

Very brief, easy read, a few typos, but overall a good account of Scottish early history. Worth the time for a short overview.
