Scottish Devil

Rate this book
He was the one man she shouldn’t want…

Known as the devil, Stone Sinclair, Earl of Alban, is carved of rock, hard and uncompromising. He bends for no man. A fiery lass with golden hair and a will as strong as his own? Surrender has never sounded sweeter.

Eliza McLaren detests all lairds. They are selfish, self-serving, arrogant men who only care for themselves and build their fortunes on the backs of their people. And Lord Stone Alban is the worst of the lot. When her father attempts to make a match between them, Eliza pledges to never give herself to a man like Stone, no matter how tempting his lips or how strong his arms. He isn’t the only one carved of stone.

But as passion ignites between them, how long can she deny that fire and brimstone are forever burned together?

This is book one in the Brethren of Stone series:

One family united by loss, driven to find love…

After the death of their parents, six siblings unite around their eldest brother, Stone. They consider blood a binding oath and vow to protect one another. They all must face their own demons as they find love and their places in the world.

A misunderstood Laird, an opinionated young woman, strangers with a common grief, the tragic loss of loved ones, will Fate bring them together as an unlikely pair?

Stone appears as hard as his name, but as the new Earl of Alban after the tragic deaths of his parents, but never has a man been so misunderstood. With a heart as big as his stature, he faces the responsibility of keeping his siblings together, as well as continuing to support the people under his protection and employ.

Eliza McLaren, recently having lost her mother to an illness that medical attention may have cured, had the laird of her clan provided a hospital for his people, has decided that anyone as imposing as Stone must be a monster. What she finds is a man who melts at the touch of a child and a brave soul who would die for those he cares about.

Tammy Andresen, the queen of historical romance and fabulous reading escapes, presents SCOTTISH DEVIL the first book in her latest series of tales of unlikely matches that may not be made in heaven, but make for heavenly reading!

Quick, easy reading that flows like honey, once you get past the bees, once again, Ms. Andresen delivers a heart-warming story with humor, heart and a happy ever after for another man in a kilt!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Tammy Andresen!

Tammy Andresen is my go-to author for my guilty pleasure historical romance reads, an author I will gladly pick up whenever something new is offered. In fact, I always find myself overeager for my next Tammy Andresen read, as I know I’ll be given something I’ll adore. I guess it’s not so much a guilty pleasure read at this point, and more a necessary read.

With Scottish Devil we get the first book in the Brethren of Stone series. After reading the prequel, The Duke’s Scottish Lass, which is really more of a story for the end of the series, I found myself eager for another historical romance series set in Scotland. With how Tammy Andresen’s A Laird to Love series is my favourite of her series, my hopes were already set high for the Brethren of Stone series.

As with every Tammy Andresen read, Scottish Devil was a quick and enjoyable story. You’re sucked in from the very first page, and things happen at a rapid pace to ensure every word sucks you in deeper. With drama and chemistry, this story sucks you into the lives of the characters. I always enjoy the characters Tammy Andresen writes, but I think these two may be one of my favourite. Not my all-time favourite Tammy Andresen couple, but certainly within my top five. You see, this duo brings us something different, and I enjoyed watching the way things built between the two of them.

It’s not just the main characters you’ll fall in love with, though, as the side characters will leave you desperate for the rest of the series. I’m already in love with Blair, and I cannot wait to dive into Wicked Laird to see how his story develops.

Without a doubt, Scottish Devil is a great start to the Brethren of Stone series.

Series: Brethren of the Stone #1
Publication Date: 8/30/18

The series premise is: After the death of their parents, six siblings unite around their eldest brother, Stone. They consider blood a binding oath and vow to protect one another. They all must face their own demons as they find love and their places in the world. I’m enjoyed meeting the brothers and sisters and learning more about them – but – I’m sorry that I read book .5 (Taming a Lady Wolfe) first. That book may be the actual first book in the series, but it is the last book timewise, so while I’m ‘meeting’ them for the first time in this book, I already know their fates. The book is well plotted and well written and I enjoyed the read.

Stone Sinclair is a man of mammoth size who the locals refer to as Fire and Brimstone – which is their ‘polite’ way of referring to him as devil. In addition to his large size, he has a dark brooding visage and a gruff way of speaking. He’s actually a handsome man with a sweet and gentle heart, but others can never get past his size to know who he really is. Both of his parents have just died in a mineshaft collapse while they were trying to save the miners working there. Now, Stone is the new Earl and he just doesn’t feel ready for the task. He hadn’t had enough time with his father, at five and twenty, he had so much left to learn. Now, he has responsibility for his five siblings, the estates, shipping lines, mines – you name it. He just needs some time to grieve for his much-loved parents, but sadly, there just isn’t time for it. Stone fully intends to be a good, generous and caring steward of his people and his holdings.

Eliza McLaren has also just suffered a loss. Her mother passed away a month ago and Eliza blames the lords of the land for her mother’s death. Those lords who take and take and constantly add to their own coffers but don’t give anything back to their people. As far as Eliza is concerned, ALL lords fall into that category and she sorely resents that her father has dragged her from her home and her mourning in order to help one of his biggest clients through their transition period – from one Earl to the next.

The new earl certainly lives up to Eliza’s expectations in the way he looks – and the stories she has heard about him during their trip just cemented her opinion of him. During their first encounter, all Eliza could do was huff and humpf and that just set Stone’s teeth on edge. He certainly had no use for a snippy, judgmental young woman who didn’t even know him, yet had already formed an opinion of him.

It was so entertaining to watch these two strong-willed people match wits with each other and finally come to understand that those initial opinions were wrong. It was also a romantic read and I was delighted to find that both the hero and the heroine were virgins. I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.

A Scottish Laird with a Face of Stone and a Heart of Gold

Set in Dundee Scotland in 1780, this is the story of Stone Sinclair, Earl of Alban, whose harsh countenance earned him the nickname “Devil”. He’s actually a nice guy with a heart for his people and his family of siblings. When his solicitor comes to his estate to deal with the books in the wake of Stone’s parents’ deaths, the lawyer suggests Stone marry Eliza, the solicitor’s daughter.

English Eliza McLaren believed the rumors about Stone and, when her father attempts to make a match between them, she vows to never give herself to a man like Stone. As she observes all the good he does, she will be forced to change her mind.

This story is short and reads like a novella with much given to us: Stone’s wants to marry and Eliza is conveniently dropped in his lap by her father. Still, Stone is a compelling character and there is much here that could have been developed into a longer story.

Scottish Devil is my new favorite Tammy Andresen book. Ms. Andresen has once again supplied us with a book that is well-written and loaded it with phenomenal characters. Stone is the new Earl after his parents are killed in a mine cave-in. Eliza has just lost her mother and resents having to travel to the home of Stone's family and she's disgusted by the rumors of the devil earl. Stone and Eliza's story is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. However, that doesn't mean it's short on drama, action or steam. I enjoyed Scottish Devil from the first page till the last and look forward to my next book by Tammy Andresen. Scottish Devil is book 1 of the Brethren of Stone Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from a third party. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I loved this new series by Tammy Andresen!
Stone Sinclair has his life turned upside down, he just became the laird of his clan, he’s had to bury his parents and he’s the guardian to his younger siblings. As the new Earl of Alban he has many responsibilities. He doesn’t refuse his fathers solicitor when he offers to help him navigate his duties.

Eliza McLaren has lost her mother to complications from her illness, she’s grieving and angry at high handed dominating men and she believes that the new Earl of Alban is one! Sometimes looks can be deceiving and what one might find behind the cover isn’t what you’d expect!
It doesn’t matter that every time he’s near her heart just flutters!
This was a fantastic book, it had so much emotions that it grabbed your heart, some times Love will blossom when you least expect it!

I received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.

Known as the devil, Stone Sinclair, Earl of Alban, is carved of rock, hard and uncompromising. He bends for no man. Eliza McLaren detests all lairds, they are selfish, self-serving, arrogant men who only care for themselves and build their fortunes on the backs of their people with no thought to the health & welfare of their people. She thinks Stone must be just as bad after all he's called The Devil by some of his people.
Eliza is still grieving for her mother when she travels with her father to the Alban lands where he's to help & advise Stone. Stone & Eliza are attracted to each other & help each other through their bereavement but they need to trust each other. This was another lovely read, the characters are always well portrayed & the pace is good. The Sinclair siblings are intriguing & interesting & I’m looking forward to reading all of their stories. I read this in an afternoon & wish the next in the series was available to continue reading about the Sinclair family!

My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Another brilliant series starter from Tammy Andresen, the drive and imagination behind her books is wonderful.
I don’t think I’ve read one of Tammy’s that I’ve not liked , and this one I loved !
Stone and Eliza both have had a rough time of it to be honest , they’ve both lost parents , been left with scars and responsibility, and they’re both having to change their outlooks and opinions of each other .
This is a great romance full of action and non stop excitement, with some perfect secondary characters for future books .
Little sister Delia and her pebbles had me filling up .
Now your intrigued , I can tell , so get reading .

By the time I had read the final word of the first Brethren of Stone story, I had been deeply moved by all the heartwarming situations. I had also enjoyed all the delightfully depicted moments featuring a close-knit family and their often witty comments. Tammy Andresen manages to make her Scottish world very realistic, where feelings are always sincerely genuine while any dilemmas are very conceivable. Though the time period is not medieval, there is still a hero who will put his life on the line for one special woman. SCOTTISH DEVIL is an enthralling romance packed with emotion, believable circumstances, and lots of charming characters.

When the parents of Stone Sinclair were accidently killed while helping others, he had to take over all their responsibilities, and one of the biggest is watching over his five younger siblings. Though he has always appeared stern and usually has little to say, having to take over the many duties as the new Earl of Alban make him come across as even more intimidating. Much gossip is being spread about his family, and after Eliza McLaren hears some of the remarks, there is no way she would want to follow her father’s wishes and marry such a despicable individual. But as she observes Stone on a daily basis, the truth about the man some call the devil is quite surprising.

How a person’s life can be altered by just one word is convincingly demonstrated with profound reactions by Stone. I really felt for this man who is actually compassionate, as his past has been filled with rumors and painful memories. When Eliza meets the Earl of Alban, she will have to decide for herself what is in fact true. It was very entertaining to watch these two learn about each other, and some of their discussions were certainly insightful as they showed me their real natures. Stone’s brothers and young sister are each intriguing in their own way, and I am eager to read additional stories about this wonderful family.

From the opening pages of this historical Scottish romance, the reader is drawn into the lives of the Sinclair family. Stone epitomises everything that is hard and uncompromising, giving an appearance of the devil himself. However, only his family is aware of how soft-hearted he can be and the ease with which he can be wounded. Eliza, on the other hand, is suffering under the miscomprehension that he is the embodiment of evil and digs her heels in when her father informs her that he plans on brokering a marriage for her with Stone. Eliza quickly comes to realise that she has had a mistaken image of Stone, but unfortunately, she has already voiced her opinions about him, making it difficult to take back the damaging words. The story is pure romance with a strong hero and the lady whose heart is ready to be captured. The Sinclair siblings are a delight and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting with this family once again. Although the book is part of a series, it is nevertheless a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

All the feels are in this story! They are both made of stone for different reasons and need each other even though they didn't know it. I never was sure what was going to happen because of the rumors and how they both were buried in their grief. They were the perfect match because they could go head to head but also help each other. There are many scenes that I loved from the envelopes, the garden, Delia, and many more.

Eliza is a smart and strong woman who has a very good reason to think all lairds are the same. She was caught in her own grief that clouded her judgment, but her heart wasn't going to let what happened keep her from love. She helped him when he needed it the most.

Stone is a man of stone, with a heart of gold. He is full of surprises as you get to know him and understand him. I really loved him because he's different, but also a gentleman and says it how it is. He will win you over quickly.

I love that Tammy's characters seem to have an instant connection and the stories can have a fairytale feel, but not be full of fluff.

A great book for the lesson of don’t judge people by rumors and hearsay. Stone and his family lost their parents in a mine collapse. Stone has inherited the Earl-ship as the oldest, and because of his fierce features, he’s known as the “devil.”
Eliza’s father who has been the solicitor for the Sinclair family, comes on an extended stay to help transition Stone into his new role. He brings along his daughter, since his wife had passed on a month ago. Eliza is filled with anger as in her province, the laird is a greedy man, who doesn’t care for his people – and in her time of need for her mother, there was no help to be found. With this as her only experience, she believes the rumors of Stone and is unhappy to have to travel to his lands.
But when she does arrive, every action she sees Stone take, she starts to question the rumors.
A nice story, with a good character development and secondary characters are fun and interesting. It kept a nice pace and I’m really looking forward to reading about the next Sinclair. Reviewed by Cyrene

“In their loss, a new family was being forged.”
Scottish Devil, the first book in the Brethren of Stone series indicates that this is going to be a wonderful, intriguing family series. After the death of their parents, the siblings vow to protect one another. The series begin with Stone Alban’s story, he is the oldest of six siblings and the first to face his demons and find love. The town fears him, calls him the devil, mainly due to his look of hardness, a permanent scowl on his face, and his gruff exterior. His solicitor’s daughter arrives and she believes the rumors of the town and her own low opinion of Lords. Eliza is strong willed, beautiful, and kind. She finds that she judged Stone too quickly. Eliza is a perfect match for Stone as she softens his harder edges and can help him with dealing with town. Set in 1780 Scotland, Scottish Devil is a wonderful story of wrong impressions, grieving, forgiveness, and family bonds.

Stone Cold 💘Love

Perth, Scotland 1790. Adult Romance.
Stone Sinclair🐺🍆🌋🔪, a Scottish Laird and Earl, has had to take up the reins of being the protector and benefactor of all those who live on his lands. His father and mother were recently killed in a coal mine cave in while trying to rescue trapped miners.
Luckily with five brothers and a young sister, he's not alone. At the gravesite, his father's solicitor arrives just as the family is leaving. He has brought his daughter with him, because his wife just died and they have only each other, now.
Stone🐺🍆🌋🔪 lives up to his name. He's a huge brawny lad of 24, with an ice cold visage that frightens many! Eliza💃💋, the solicitor's daughter is not 😨scared, though, but She is in awe.
It is decided that Alister, the solicitor, and his daughter will stay for a while, until Stone🐺🍆🌋🔪 can get up to speed on the new duties of being Duke.
He is also infatuated with Eliza💃💋, but she definitely has a mind of her own!
Happy ending guaranteed!

Another great by Tammy Andresen! The Scottish Devil is the first book in the Brethren of Stone series. Tammy has such a way in her writing that just makes me feel good every time I read one of her books and I think I have read just about all of them. This medieval highlander story is about being judged by looks and not who the person really is and I found my self leaning a good lesson. This story is an original and her characters, Stone and Eliza, are so charming and caring. Tammy has a true talent for writing and I am never disappointed in her books. This story has judgement, family love, misunderstandings, death, grieving, support, caring, lies, will power, memories, forgiveness, but does it find love? Of coarse it does. I highly recommend tis book!

Stone Sinclair, Lord Alban, had a fearsome reputation of being a cold cruel devil. Although this wasn’t the case, his whole demeanour seemed to reflect this, he appeared to be gruff and unsmiling in his manner. His tender side could be seen in his caring attitude towards his siblings, particularly his little sister, Delia. Eliza, the daughter of his attorney, has heard of and believed his reputation. However, when she meets Stone, her attitudes begin to slowly change. This was an engaging story, that I read in an evening. I enjoyed the interaction between the siblings and the growing understanding between Eliza and Stone, although this had its difficulties. I look forward to reading about the rest of the siblings. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Emotionally absorbing and fabulously engaging novella!!

When Andresen gets it right her stories seem to emit an energy that compels you to her characters and keeps you entangled until the end - and Stone and Eliza's story is just such a tale. It's steeped in touching sentiment,  possesses a charged air of sexual tension, (despite the innocence and vulnerability of the leads), resulting in a heightened awareness and magnetic connection regardless of hurtful misperceptions and assumptions causing inner walls to be erected - all this and more effortlessly swept me along as insecurities were unravelled and conquered inspite of the brooding, strong, wilfully stubborn and confident facades the leads successfully project.
With the addition of some good natured teasing from endearingly well rounded subcharacters: Stone's boisterous and loyal siblings, and the couple's hidden depths that reveal and uncover hidden angst, joy, wit and their kindhearted true natures make the leads all the more relatable and this a highly enjoyable read that flows well and hits all the requirements of a great romance.
This series is fast becoming addictive!!! Loved it!!!

Wonderful Love Story

5 stars because I liked it so much. I liked Stone, the hero , and Eliza, the heroine. I had get to know Stone to fall in love with him. He seamed kind of like a jerk at first. Eliza seamed a little unrelenting, in the beginning. As you followed the progression of their relationship, They became more interesting. It had romance, some adventure, and a little tasteful sensuality. It was hard for me to put down, wanting to know what happened next. The Albans was a wonderful family, I became very attached to. I recommend this book as I do all of her books. I am going to start another of her books soon.

You know, at first I didn’t really like Eliza. She seemed judgmental and prickly. In fact, i thought she was kind of prickly the first time I read about her, but the more I read about her story, the more I liked her. She had her reasons and was very remorseful for thinking how she did about Stone. And Stone, well he obviously needs a woman’s touch to soften things up a bit. Some men are just intimidating and he’s one of them, just like his father was. I loved every minute of their love story. And I can’t wait to read more in this new series.

Devil or Angel

Wonderful and captivating read. Love this story; although it was a bit short for me. I love longer stories and especially, series books. Having said that, I would honestly say that it is very well written. The characters are well developed. Romance, loyalty, family, and adventure are in the mix. Mistrust and misunderstanding and finally enlightenment are woven in. Hard to put down. A must read. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series. A truly wonderful author.

Great start of a new series! This will be another hit series written by Tammy Andresen. I got sucked into this first of, hopefully, many new books. I had to finish this heart-wrenching amazing story in one sitting. Just couldn't put it down. It made me cry and it made me laugh. And I can hardly wait for the stories of all the delightful siblings. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a brooding hero!

Nice enough read though I think the word "door knob" in Chapter 14 DOES NOT belong to his Timeline... ("knob" in this context I guess refers to something that can be turned... while they had keys that could turn to unlock something... d0or knobs that work in conjunction with the unlocking of doors were not yet in existence in 1780... after a century in 1878 maybe but not at this time...) So the setting has been warped a bit... Maybe the author meant "door handle"....?

It's a childhood hate, a name that locals called him.
However, the new comer to the clan, seemed to have some sustain for him, although she really didn't know him.
Once the two experienced different situations together they both started to respect the other. That was until...
Yeah, it's best to read the whole story as the author intended, than my poor synapses.
