At dawn Alex is found floating in the pool of his Cherringham mansion. To the police it's a drug-fueled accident. But when Jack and Sarah get involved, they quickly discover that while a song may never die - the person, who wrote it, might have been murdered.

It seems he's gotten cold feet, with the wedding just days away. But Josh is not all he appears to be- And soon suspicion falls on the Golf Club itself. Can Josh be found before he takes justice into his own hands?
A DEATH IN THE FAMILY When a doddering Harry Platt tumbles from the top of his stairs in a deadly fall, it looks like an unfortunate accident. But when solicitor Tony Standish meets the beneficiaries and discovers the immense size of the estate, his suspicions are aroused. Jack and Sarah are asked to investigate and find that nothing is what it seems when it comes to families - not when money and secrets are involved.
Cherringham is a serial novel à la Charles Dickens, with a new mystery thriller released each month. Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick read for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa.
Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90's, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and - most recently - the successful crime fiction series Cherringham. Now into its second season of 12 novellas, Cherringham is popular around the world and has been adapted as a series of audiobooks in Germany.
#1 (#22 in series) The Song Never Dies 4* 8/8/21 (112) murder mystery; a bit too graphic description of the death for a cozy; music industry
#2 (#23 in series) A Bad Lie 4* 8/9/21 (89) missing person case; minor setting Leeds
#3 (#24 in series) A Death in the Family 3.5* 8/10/21 (95) accident or murder?; somehow the entire story felt off; cliffhanger ending
Notes to this box/series development: Either I've never noticed all the typos in the first twenty books in series or the quality isn't what it once was :-( Table of content (at the beginning of the book set & navigation panel) only for the three stories but none for the single chapters within those mysteries :-( From time to time these shorter stories are a nice break from my (usual) longer books (even if I can use them only for a very few challenges - and the main reason I read them so rarely anymore) It makes sense that the language of the characters becomes more and more conform (everything else wouldn't be natural) though I still miss seeing the differences between American and British English very much (secondary reason why it takes so long for me to continue this series)
This was the story of murder, over a song, and I was totally surprised as to who the killer was. Jack and Sarah were asked to look into Alex King’s death and, as usual, Jack had the feeling Alex didn’t drown all by himself, he definitely had help.
A BAD LIE
That was about what extremes a father will go to when it comes to stopping her daughters’ wedding. Even though Lauren and Josh loved each other I guess Mr. Proctor wanted to choose the groom, whether it was good for Lauren or not. BUT Jack promised the couple that he and Sarah would make it right. Which they did.
A DEATH IN THE FAMILY
Well, this started with a man with dementia falling down stairs and killing himself. Jack and Sarah were asked to investigate it because there was no reason for Harry Platt to even be upstairs. Jack and Sarah solved the case and at Jack’s birthday party at the Ploughman bar he got a call from the states telling him his daughter and her husband had been in an accident and they were both in ICU. Jack immediately told Sarah and asked her to take care of his dog and off he went to the states and that was The End.
So, no romance, no sex and no swearing. A rated G series.
As to the narration: I’ve said it 7 times before and I’ll say it about this 8th book Neil Dudgeon did an awesome job.
I have read or listened to all of the Cherringham cosy crime series and I can honestly say I really enjoyed each one, however there would be one thing that would stop me from reading future books and that would be a romance between Sarah and Jack, the friendship they have is perfect, please don't muck it up with romance. I am now going to read the full length stories.
This set of episodes were all pretty edgy. I didn’t like them as well as others in the series and there was a surprising cliff hanger at the end. I immediately moved on to the next episode and suddenly there is a major gap in the story. I was able to find that a full length novel “Dead in the Water” fills that gap. So, if you want to continue the series you need to read that before moving on to the next compilation.
THE SONG NEVER DIES When Alex King, leader of legendary 90s rock group Lizard, hosts a party to get the band back together, old grudges surface.
A BAD LIE- When talented young artist Josh Andrews goes missing after a stag night prank at Cherringham Golf Club, the bride desperately asks Jack and Sarah to find him. Well, this one was a bit different, more of just a mystery than a murder mystery.
A DEATH IN THE FAMILY-When a doddering Harry Platt tumbles from the top of his stairs in a deadly fall, it looks like an unfortunate accident. The beginning of this book was really sad to me. Harry's monologue was very disconcerting. It is upsetting to know that so many elderly folks go through that every day. But there was quite a twist at the end.
The back catalogue is getting shorter so trying not to race through the episodes. Not the best set of stories, as if the authors were struggling with their own clearly defined parameters. The rock band episode was rather cheesy and Midsomer-ish, the golf club instalment saw a trip off campus to a real town, and the final one ended with Jack rushing off to America.
As always, a good, fun read. When I want a few moments of peace, I turn to the tales of Jack and Sarah. The well plotted stories take me to another place to meet interesting characters.
I really enjoy the Cherringham series of books. From the relationship between Jack and Sarah to the town of Cherringham and the Cotswalds, and the mysteries themselves, it's all quite fun. Keep reading!!
I enjoy these books. The mystery portion is terrific. I am not disappointed by the story line of the characters, I just get bored with the relationships. I am in it for the "who done it" which has kept me reading.
There are three stories in this installment as per usual. In one a rockstar dies. In another a guy is lured away from his new life and into his old life of crime by someone who wants to prevent his marriage. In the final episode, an old man dies and it smells fishy, so Jack and Sarah investigate having to make some hard choices in the process.
