He was supposed to look out for her, not kiss her senseless.

Au pair Uma is all kinds of wrong for single dad Zach. She's his son's nanny. Raised in a conservative Hindu family, she’s still chaste at twenty-three. What's more, she’s his teammate’s almost-sort-of fiancée.

Zach knows all of that. Then why can’t he rein in his lust for her?

If there is one man Uma should not be attracted to, it’s the father of the adorable five-year-old in her charge. Once burned twice shy, Zach is the captain of a Paris water polo team and a wealthy entrepreneur who can have any woman he wants. No strings attached.

Small wonder he goes all out to shun Uma!

But when, with the help of a bottle of fine wine, Zach confesses all the dirty things he’d like to do to her, Uma astounds him by saying she wants that, too.

What’s a man to do but oblige?

Besides, it’s not like it’s the end of the world. They’re both sensible, level-headed adults. They’ll just have a bit of fun and then go back to normal, as if nothing happened.

As if feelings weren’t already getting in the way.

This contemporary romance had a slight sports theme as the hero is a star water polo player. What made the book more interesting for me was the cultural background of Uma, the heroine. She was from Nepal and only staying in Paris as an au pair while she attended school. As a lower caste Hindu woman she had different customs and different life expectations than are normally presented in a romance novel. So for her having sex before marriage, especially with a person her parents would never approve of was a monumental decision. However, the author did not make this the focus of the novel but rather incorporated into the story line as well as other Hindu customs.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this novel.

this is a very quick read that deals with a single dad an his nanny. Zach lays water polo and has sole custody of his 5 year old son. Uma is his nanny. they both try to hide their attraction. Zach believes Uma is with his team mate and off limits. Uma is from Nepal and customs are different. she wants to live her life but also does not want to disappoint her parents . the lovers have to wade through their cultural differences, misconceptions and insecurities to make it work. but first they have to admit their own feelings. The story was too short for a lot of development but was an ok read.

I loved both of these characters. Uma, who is such an innocent, but she knows that she is attracted to this man that she shouldn't be attracted to. She doesn't want to let anyone in her life down, so she is driving herself crazy trying to figure out what the right thing to do is.

Zach who has a bit of baggage with his ex and then dealing with being it lust with this young innocent woman, who happens to almost be engaged to his teammate and friend.

Sam is the cutest kid and he bridges the gap between these two so well.

I don't know much about the Hindu religion or water polo, so I have no clue if the author was accurate in her descriptions, but it all felt real. When she talked about what Uma faced due to her decisions vs her faith I felt that. When she described play during a game, I felt like I was there.

Really good job.

I loved Zach and Uma's story! The conflict they each fought through was impressive. This story had everything: passion, desire, family responsibilities, family and societal expectations, friends, and Love. A great story! I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of this series!

Zach and Uma's story was a quick and easy read, but it was not one of my favorites.

I struggled with this review. I really liked Zach's son, Sam. Other than that, the story was boring. It wasn't bad, it was just ok. Not usually what I expect from Alix Nichols, especially after the last two books.

I didn't sense any chemistry between Zach and Uma. I liked Zach. I liked Uma. But, chemistry, heat, sexiness, romance.....nothing.

I did find the ceremony to be interesting. All I can say, is to read this one for yourself. From the reviews already posted, I can see I am in the minority. Hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as most people seemed to enjoy it.

Uma- Zach's nanny for his son Sam while attending school, has so many choices in her life to make, people around her are trying to make them for her. Her parents want her to marry one man. Her best friend Noah's mother wants her to marry Noah. Yet her feelings are gearing more towards her employer. Who she thinks is trying to get back with the ex- and Sams mother. She shouldn't be entertaining these feelings they're not right. She needs to focus on school and Sam and wait to graduate and make her way back to Nepal to her fate laid out by her parents.
Zach has the hots for his nanny; he thinks she is supposed to be engaged to Noah. Her customs are different, so he assumes that's why Noah has not done or said anything. Being around Uma 's hard. It shames him how much he wants to touch her. How much he thinks about her. He assumes his feelings are just lust. He cannot act on these feelings, right? He would be betraying Noah. Violating Uma's trust. She is the best thing that has happened to Sam. It would ruin everything. Wouldn't it? Sometimes the way she looks at him..
I was so excited going into Playing with Fire! Having read the previous book The Perfect Catch we got bits of the budding relationship between these two.
Sweet and sexy with some emotional play, the characters are a bit frustrating- Especially Zach --

** may be a bit of a spoiler** I know SOME men, not all- need neon signs, megaphones, flags holders and GPS to guide them in the right direction.. but how is he so oblivious to his Ex and her agenda? He has wine watching T.V with her then going to Uma after that. I think not.. Just saying., ** End of spoiler**

But not enough that I wanted to stop reading, I had to know these to made it out this other side, despite the circumstances.
I am looking forward to more of these frustratingly hot steamy romances from Alix Nichols

If you read my reviews for the six previous Alix Nichols books that I've read, you will grasp how much I enjoy her writing and lower angst story lines. While I enjoyed those same attributes within this book, there was one major issue that I struggled with. Playing with Fire is the first book in the new Game Time series, but incorporates characters from the author's previous release, The Perfect Catch. Along with the intersecting characters from the two separate books, the stories also occur during the same time frame. So, it's not just the characters that are crossing over, but it's also some of the story line. So much of what transpires in the first half of the book (aside from the more intimate details of Uma and Zach's romance) were already shared in the previous book. Due to this overlap, I felt like I already knew most of Uma and Zach's back story and outcome, which made the book feel a bit repetitive, at times. Granted, and appreciated, Uma and Zach's story was expanded and more developed in Playing with Fire. If I hadn't been familiar with the previous book, I feel I would have enjoyed it so much more.

Apart from the previously mentioned personal issue, I am a big fan of Alix Nichols and her lovely writing. I especially enjoyed getting to know more about Zach's coach, Lucas, and was thrilled to see that his story is next. It should be a VERY interesting romance. (I voluntarily read an advanced copy of Playing With Fire. This review is my honest and unbiased opinion.)

I Voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book

I have never read a story like this before. An Hindu Heroine. Different but I enjoyed it.

Uma was single father Zach's nanny for his son Sam who is a special needs child as he has seizures. And Uma is studying to be a bead designer. And also coming from a Hindu background her parents are very strict and only allowed her to look after Sam as she thought that Zach was married.

Uma and Zach are attracted to each other, but its not meant to be. First of all Uma's parents has arranged a marriage for her and her best friend's mother who has been like her fairy godmother also wants her to marry her son.
Zach is thinking that Uma is 'engaged' to one of his friends and doesn't want to do anything to come between them
But when you attracted to someone and with them most of the time, something was bound to happen.

But does Zach want to be with Uma or this just a casual affair. And now that Sam's mother wants to be a part of his life should Uma let them be a family.

I enjoyed the way the story was paced and also the ending part was fascinating to me. Definitely a good story and can't wait to read more about this author and this series.

Alix never fails to deliver a story about finding love and with a shorter story it never FEELS rushed. I don't know how she does it but I hope it continues. This is Zach and Uma's story, we met them back in Noah's story. I have been waiting for this one. If you haven't read a book of hers before, you won't be lost with this one because it gives a lot of backstory and doesn't skip anything.

Zach has been hearing how Noah loves Uma and he wants to stay away from her for that reason, Uma is told Noah loves her also...until HE REALLY DOESN'T. Zach is an amazing single dad and Uma is the part time nanny. Neither can help their feeling for the other, and you can feel the sexual tension from miles away. You see some great build up and there is a little drama involved but overall it is a quick, happy book that doesn't feel like inta-love or anything like that.

Another great thing is the development of her characters. Zach is a water polo player and Uma is into sequinning. We get to see them spend time in their element and with their friends when it isn't all about the other person, I love the depth that seems to give these characters and brings them to life.

Obsession. This story involves a lot of aspects of Hindu culture, water polo, epilepsy, embroidery and haute couture but what I found portrayed most strongly was the mutual attraction being rigidly rejected for varieties of reasons. This is an HEA so passion prevails but with the requisite and interesting stops along the way. I also enjoyed the side trip to Malta.

Dovetailing neatly into Ms. Nichols' previous novel, "The Perfect Catch (Darcy Brothers #3)," the interlinking story with Noah and Sophie is sufficiently explained to make this novel stand alone so if you've never read anything else by the author you will still enjoy this one on its own. Of course I have long been entranced by the ooh la la, je ne sais quois of these Paris-based snarky gems so would also recommend filling in some background and nibble the rest of the box once you've tasted this bonbon.

Title: Playing With Fire
Author: Alix Nichols
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Rating: 3/5

This was the first book I've read by Alex Nichols it did take me a while to get into it but I'm glad I stuck with it as it was a pretty decent read all round.

A virgin au pair and the captain of the pro water polo team sounds like some sort of dodgy over 18's movie but that's what this story involves obviously it's not that seedy and there's more to it. A single dad who has an affair with the au pair that turns to love but their HEA nearly doesn't happen when Zack the dad almost leaves it too late to tell Uma the au pair how he really feels.

This was a quick fast paced read that was well written there was heart wrenching moments, funny moments and romantic moments it's safe to say this book had a touch of it all.

This is Zack and Uma's story. She is a virgin and moves in to au pair for him and look after his son who is an epileptic. Zack is the captain of a pro Polo Water Team.
Of course there is a very cute kid in this story - Zack's son and Uma grows to love him dearly.
Zack and Uma have an affair and its almost too late when he finally plucks up the courage to tell her he loves her and this story does have a happily ever after in it. Thank goodness!
It is written in the usual Alix Nichols style and is a short story but fast paced.
There are some heart wrenching scenes in it, some very romantic as well as some very funny ones and all in all I am quite happy to recommend it.

This is a great start to a new series. Alix has a way of telling a story that draws you in at page one and doesn't let go until the end. Her stories have such fantastic characters that you fall in love with them and Zach and Uma are no exception. These two start off as employer and employee, but these two have instant attraction and sizzling chemistry and it turns into so much more. This sweet, hot, steamy romance with a fantastic ending will leave you with a smile and anxious for the next book in the series!

This is a sweet sports romance, where the hero and heroine question their feelings for each other and try really hard not to act on them. But as life shows us that's not always as easy as you think. Zack and Uma have great chemistry and come to realize what they think is holding them back from each other, may just be smoke screens. Nichols scores a goal with her storyline and character development, definitely worth reading.

Dommage.

I loved the Darcy Brothers trilogy but this spin-off is even better !
I loved everything about it : it had all the right ingredients that I love in a book, especially original characters.

Zach may be an athlete but he isn't the usual football jock that is in almost every sports novel. Instead he plays waterpolo, and even if I'm not really into sports I loved learning more about this one through Zach's explanations.
He is also a single father, and again, not the expected type. I felt close to him all through the book, especially with his dilemma about Colette, his ex and son's mother because it really was a reaction normal people could have.
Zach's character didn't have this unreal feeling that you get with other romance heroes.
He isn't perfect, he doubts himself and his life choices, he doesn't love in a perfect way either, he makes mistakes.
And that's why you can't do anything but love him.

Uma too is a fantastic character. First she comes from a country that we don't hear a lot about so I found that really interesting. She shows the readers little bits of her world. We learn about her culture, and it's always very respectful, never cliché or demeaning.
Then just because she is a virgin, it doesn't make her a blushing shrinking violet. She knows what she wants and even if she doubts, it's never of herself, more because her education or Marguerite's expectations get in the way of what she truly desires.

Finally, Sam was my favorite. He's one of the cutest character I ever found in a book ! I really really liked the fact that Alix Nichols talked about a subject that is so rarely brought up in fiction, children with illnesses. I've stayed for a long while in a children's hospital, I've seen children with epilepsy so severe that they couldn't talk, walk or function at all.
I wanted to bring them home with me so they didn't have to stay in that depressing place. So it broke my heart to read about little Sam struggling with epilepsy crises. Thankfully, his epilepsy doesn't prevent him from living a "normal" life.

To conclude, I'd say that in this novel Alix Nichols forgets about all the stereotypes that romance books are too often made of. She talks about interesting subjects, important ones too. She makes her readers learn, dream and helps them escape their lives for a while, travel in their minds.
She makes you fall in love with Zach and Uma and their couple.

P-S : I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.

Zach and the Nanny

Playing With Fire is the first in Alix Nichols’ Game Time series and the events occurred at the same time as those in The Perfect Catch, Noah’s book, and the third in the Darcy Brothers Series. We met Zach and his son’s nanny, Uma, in Noah and Sophie’s story.

Zach Monin is Captain of Noah’s pro water polo team, and single father to sick five year old Sam, after his ex-wife bailed when she couldn’t shoulder the responsibility of Sam’s health issues. To fit the pressures of work and team training with the desire to be a hands on father, he’s relying on the help of the very young, beautiful and innocent Nepalese Hindu nanny. The nanny who is supposedly the almost-fiancé of his best friend, Noah.

Uma Darji has been sponsored by Noah’s mother for a study year in Paris, and has been led to believe that Noah is completely in love with her, which is a shame. Because she only sees Noah as an older brother, and not with the unbelievably frustrating attraction that she feels for Zach. Innocent she may be, naive she is not. The chemistry between these two is scorching, especially for an easy read that makes this book able to be consumed in a single sitting.

Sweet, easy, but incredibly hot is how I would describe this book. While all of Alix’s books are absolute stand-a-lones, I really cannot stress enough, how much I enjoy the interaction between the various characters of her different stories and getting to know them. This book is easy to recommend to romance readers who enjoy spice, sexy single fathers and hot athletes. I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. 4 Stars.

Playing With Fire is a good book. It's better than 80% of the contemporary romance out there. It features excellent writing, sufficiently descriptive narrative, sympathetic and well-drawn main characters, and a well-paced plot. There is just enough angst and just the right amount of sex, and a perfect HEA ending. So why only 3 stars? Because there are three critical elements missing: 1) Despite the descriptions of Provencal scenery, that special Alix Nichols Parisian "je ne sais quoi" is blatantly absent. Without that quirky Gallic charm, the novel seems insipid. 2) The dichotomy between Uma's highly traditional low-caste Hindu background and her very modern attitudes towards career aspirations, her unchaperoned employment as an au pair in a single man's home, and (eventually) sex before marriage, is poorly handled. Marguerite, Uma's French benefactress, serves as the deus ex machina to extricate the author from that dilemma, but it's a weak plot device and the effort fails. 3) Zach and Uma's attraction is initially lust-driven, but based on their interactions, it doesn't really progress from that. The witty and sparkling dialogue that enlivens Ms. Nichols other novels is gone, taking with it the primary means of developing both the characters and their relationship. Don't mistake me: I enjoyed Playing With Fire. It has the trademark warmth, though it lacks the sparkle and high spirit so characteristic of Alix Nichols' writing. I still recommend the book, and will absolutely read more of this truly talented writer's work.

Genre: Romance - sports, single-dad, virgin
Stand-alone: Yes
Part of a series: Yes - Book 1 of the Game Time Series, Follows book 3 of The Darcy Brothers Series (Uma and Zach were introduced in Noah's book and Noah makes a cameo in this one)
POV: Dual Uma and Zach
Steam Level: Slow burn
5/5

At this point I think it's safe to say that I've read nearly all of Alix Nichol's books. It's been a pleasure to see her talents grow along with her comfort level in the more intimate scenes. I also love that she has epilogues now (that was a complaint before). I like to see the couple after their HEA.

Playing with Fire is no exception. The writing is fantastic. The slow burn between Uma and Zach mixed with a realistic insight to Uma's culture and the consequences that their love affair can bring is done well and respectfully. This is a beautiful story that kept me hooked from the start. It's a very fast read and i finished it in three sittings (it probably would have been one or two but I need sleep in order to function). If you're looking for a sweet romance with some steam and a hot single-dad then Playing with Fire is the book to read.

I received an advanced copy of this book for free from the author and am voluntarily giving an honest review.

MERCIIIIII

The is the first in the Game Time Series but the characters stem from her last book The Perfect Catch. This is a forbidden romance between single dad, Zach and his nanny, Uma. Plus, to top it off, she's a virgin! They both feel the attraction but both know they should keep it professional. What will happen when they give into the temptation??
Zach's ex Colette adds fire to the flame when she comes back into the picture. Is Collette there to to try be a mother to Sam or is she trying to get back with Zach? Uma definitely would like to know!
Oh, did I mention that Uma is Hindu and is supposed to go back home after schooling to an arranged marriage?? Also she's been told that her best friend Noah has feeling for her!! How will he handle all this considering he's good friends and teammates with Zach?! Loved reading how this all unfolds! Another great read by Alix Nichols!! A light, sweet and sexy read that I couldn't put down! Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I received an early copy and voluntarily left my honest comment.

This is the first book I’ve read by this Ms Nicholas and it won’t be the last. I was pleasantly surprised, it was a lovely read. We Zach, he’s a single dad of an adorably cute little boy and also a the captain of a pro water polo team and he also runs his own business and is rather weathly. He hires Au pair Uma as a nanny to look after his son. Uma has been raised in a very conservative Hindi family, she’s a 23 year old virgin and totally off limits for Zach.

Zach can have any women he wants, but he lusts for Uma. He know’s he shouldn’t but he can’t help himself. Uma, who has been promised to a man back home also struggles with her feeling for Zach too.

There were some surprising twists and turns in this story which I certainly didn’t see coming. I really enjoyed reading it and look forward to reading more of Ms Nicholas’s books.

Zach is a single father to his five year old son Sam, who suffers from seizures, and was finding it difficult to balance the responsibilities of handling his business activities as well as being the captain of the polo team so he has hired a nanny.

Uma is from Nepal and she was sponsored by Noah’s mother to attend embroidery school in Paris. Noah happens to be Zach’s best friend and his mother led her to believe that Noah had romantic feelings for her which has created complications as she only looks at him as a friend.

As Zach and Uma spend time together their attraction ignites however complications arise when Zach doesn’t want to steal his best friend’s girl and they both have family issues that need to be handled.

The connection between the two is strong and there are a few twists to keep you entertained. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

I really enjoyed "Playing with Fire"by Alix Nichols. I volunteered to read a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I am glad I did. I've enjoyed this extended series and when we were first introduced to Zach and Ulma, I had my fingers crossed that we would explore their relationship in a future book. My expectations were exceeded. The writing is great, the characters engaging and the story moves along in a way where the next thing you know, you've finished and are wanting to jump into the next book. I'll have to wait patiently to see what's next. In the meantime, if you haven't picked up this series, you should. I've enjoyed all the books written by this author, and would highly recommend them to fans of the contemporary romance genre.
Happy Reading....enjoy!
