All my childhood fantasies have come true, but reality is never as simple as we would like. I dreamed of living in a wondrous world of the supernatural and having magical powers of my own. Now, I have all of that, but it comes with a caveat—a six-foot brute who is supposed to train me on all things Fae. He is a dauntless warrior of the Wild Hunt. A beautiful bastard. He is my lover and my burden, my savior and my curse. The one thing he isn’t, is mine.
Michael
There’s a monster lose in the city, leaving a trail of bodies in its wake. Ashley thinks she’s going to help us find the killer, but there’s no way I’m letting that happen. Not long ago, I carried her lifeless body out of a dirty alley. Ever since, my carefully constructed world has been leveled, despite my endless efforts at damage control. Ashley Moore is a force of nature—courageous and brash like the heroes she reads about. She has no business being involved with the Hunt, and I’m not about to let her sultry lips and perfect curves change my opinion.
**This is the third book in The Fae Games Series but can be read as a stand alone novel. Warning: This is NOT a Young Adult novel! It contains scenes with graphic violence and mature sexual content.
Jill is a Texan, born and raised. She manages the hectic social calendars for her three active children and occasionally spends an evening with her dashing husband. Aside from being an author and a mom, she's a travel junkie and loves to read when she is not lost in her own stories.
With Jill’s books, you can count on confident heroines, plenty of steamy tension, and deliciously assertive leading men. There are no guarantees in life, but with her books, you know everything will work out in the end. However, a perfect ending would not be nearly as satisfying without a seemingly insurmountable challenge. Jill loves to add plenty of adversity in her stories, creating unforgettably dynamic characters and sneaky plot twists you will never see coming.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the previous book in this series, and I still breezed through this one very quickly, I found this one to fall back into the pattern of book 1: the story was quite lacking. As in, there wasn't one.
The whole thing was basically about sex and insta-love and toxic relationships. I feel like the writer threw a random stalker/murderer into the mix just to spice things up a bit and to have at least a little excitement besides all the relationship drama. I guessed correctly who the bad guy was because it was quite similar to what happened in book 1 too.
While I did like that Ashley is fierce and sassy, I just couldn’t connect with her the way I did with Becca. Same with the boys, Michael just felt like a watered down and much douchier version of Lochlan.
Received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this, the book keeps you hooked from page 1. I hadn’t read the previous two books but that wasn’t an issue at all, I dove straight into the world and didn’t feel out of place. The characters are well written and likeable, the book flew by and was sad when it ended, if any criticisms it was felt a bit short and I’d have loved it to go in longer.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

There’s a monster lose in the city leaving a trail of bodies in its wake. I want more than anything to help others with my new abilities—what better use of my power than to stop a killer? Too bad Michael doesn’t feel the same.
Michael
She’s a born fighter. Courageous and brash like the heroes she reads about. Two weeks ago I carried her lifeless body out of a dirty alley. Ever since, my carefully constructed world has been leveled, despite my endless efforts at damage control.
Ashley Moore is a force of nature. Her best friend is the Erlking’s woman, and together, Ashley and Rebecca have infiltrated our brotherhood. Everything about our lives is dangerous, so I’ve done what I can to protect her—even if she ends up hating me for it.
After reading Shadow Play and Twilight Siege, I had to read this~
And honestly I thought I would have been better. I liked it, but not as much as the first two books.
Shades of Betrayal is written in a dual POV, focusing on Ashley and Michael I’m soooo happy that Michael got his own book. This is the third book in the series and features some familiar faces and some new faces as well. It covers from before the defeat of Morgan to a few months after and involves Rebecca quite a bit less. I would consider this a stand alone novel, you don’t necessarily have read Shadow Play and Twilight Siege to follow this, but you do get to know the characters more intimately.
Michael is a difficult person to make friends with, he is closed off and not easy to love, although Ashley sees something she wants and no one will get in her way. Michael works for the Hunt, and he doesn’t want Ashley anywhere near it, it’s not safe for her. But someone is out there killing women, and Michael needs to keep Ashley safe.
Ashley, newly formed Fae, wants to discover her powers so she can be more useful. A very strong and assertive main character, she’s having problems pulling her powers, and it’s making her more frustrated by the day. It doesn’t help that the man she is supposed to be training with is so pig-headed. But she can’t deny their attraction and no matter how crabby Michael gets, she’s still drawn to him.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to another one. I was honestly super shocked at the twist – no spoilers; read it for yourself! All three are worth reading for sure, but read The Fae Games books first! I recommend it! _________________________________ Shadow Play |Review Twilight Siege |Review Shades of Betrayal |Review Born of Nothing |Review Midnight's End |Review
Thank you NetGalley and Jill Ramsower LLC for this arc.
Shades of Betrayal has received decent reviews here and on Goodreads and I looked forward to reading it. It's classified as a mystery/thriller, romance and several reviews mentioned the steamy romance.
I'm no prude and have nothing against some soft porn in my mystery stories. There were also fantasy elements hinted at in the beginning (fae) and honestly I expect some soft porn in most fantasy books.
But there was NO story at all here, at least not one I could find! The big mystery to me is how could the sexual fantasies go on for over 300 pages and keep anyone's interest?? She baked cookies that her dog wouldn't eat so instead she passes them on to him? Hoping to what?? The fantasy / paranormal elements basically boiled down to the fae needing to feed off of someone else's sexual release in order to develop / restore their own power?? For over 300 pages???
I admit I got really bored around the 50% point and started to skip 15-20 pages and then read for 15-20 pages, wash, rinse, repeat just to get to the end of this. Maybe I skipped the good parts of the story, but the following 15-20 pages should have at least referred back to the story..... I never found that.
This review here explains a lot of what I thought about this book. I wanted more of a story than just the characters sleeping together from the beginning with some vague semblance of filler in between more of that. This book belongs in a series but can be read as a standalone so if I'm already not invested in the characters (which I'm not) that are present in the book what's the point of it in the first place? If I wanted to go there I have the option of going to the erotica sub-genre of romance. I prefer more of a build-up to the romance in the books I read. I want the characters to get to know each other and develop together before anything more happens. Overall, I feel like I was oversold something and it only reached a fraction of what I was expecting it to.
If you're looking for something steamy with a slab of fantastic Fae mischief then you're in for a treat!
Jill Ramsower does not disappoint in her stand alone spin off of the best friend's side of story from her previous books. You can read this one by itself, but I have to admit it is much better having known the whole story from the other two books.
The book follows Ashley, the best friend of Becca from the first two books. To be honest I really enjoyed Ashley's character a lot and she definitely needed her own book. She's a great book editor, so much so her job wouldn't let her quit and allowed her to work from home in a different country, jealous much-- yes, I am. And Michael is a brooding anti-hero if I ever did read one, for sure. Honestly, the only reason I didn't give this book a five-wing is because personally I had to put the book down several times because Michael came off like a dick, and not the kind of dick that I was rooting for, in the end he comes around and gets his head out of his ass, but his character is why this book didn't get my unwavering fan flag waving.
And trust me, I AM a total fan of Jill's books, and her writing style. I will eat up her next books when they come out whenever she gives them to me. But, this book was made better by having read the other two books, and standing alone I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much, so I had to give it a 4-wing instead of 5. Either way, keep them coming Jill!
WARNINGS:
*** This book contains violence, strong sexual situations/encounters, and multiple partners ***

OMG!!! I think I actually liked Ashley's story more than Rebecca's lol! I certainly enjoyed it more for some reason. I think I laughed more. I instantly feel in love with Ashley and Michael. I expected not to like this book but I don't know why. They are an even cuter couple then Rebecca and Lochlan, if you ask me. I think I liked this story better because it more challenging for the couple from the very start and watching them go through these growing pains gave the story more substance. Thoroughly enjoyed this read! I have to admit it was unexpected but I was pleasantly surprised! .......Fun, UNEXPECTED and happy
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Okay. Honestly? I LOVED this book. I loved how I got insight into both Michael's and Ashley's minds and thought processes. I was a little confused with how the book started, just because I was thinking it would start right after Twilight Siege (The Fae Games #2) ended, but it started sort of in the middle and maybe more towards the end of Twilight Siege. I also had to get it into my head to have a certain mindset with each chapter since it switched perspectives each chapter - so at the beginning of Ashley's chapters I had to get back into her shoes and vice versa with Michael's. I didn't have too much trouble with this, though, since I have read books with this setup before, but if you haven't read multiple-perspective books before, prepare yourself for two perspectives/story lines.
Overall, I really really enjoyed this book and look forward to another one. I love how intricate Jill makes her characters and plots. I was honestly super shocked at the twist - no spoilers; read it for yourself! All three are worth reading for sure, but read The Fae Games books first!
Series Rating: (5 ⭐️ average) Shadow Play ★★★★★ Twilight Siege ★★★★★ Shades of Betrayal ★★★★★ Born of Nothing ★★★★★ Midnight's End ★★★★★
I enjoyed the Fae Games duet, which features primarily Rebecca (that is, the story is told from her POV only.) Ashley, her friend and roommate appears in both books, but her storyline is definitely not a focus of those books. Shades of Betrayal is written in a dual POV, focusing on Ashley and Michael, one of the members of the Hunt. It covers from before the defeat of Morgan to a few months after and involves Rebecca quite a bit less.
The dual POV definitely gave this book a different feel, and it had more of a "contemporary romance" feel than the Fae Games duet. Ashley is a different kind of Fae than Rebecca, so it is interesting to see how she deals with the transition--discovering her powers, learning how to "feed" her magic, etc. Ashley is very different than Rebecca. She seems independent and stronger willed in some ways. The "push and pull" between her and Michael made for quite a lot of drama. I feel like most of the book was fairly predictable. I spotted the main villain almost instantly. There was one thing that surprised me near the end, but not much time was spent on it. I would have liked to see more scenes in Faery (and more "intrigue" and "fantasy" scenes in general.) The first chapter was very interesting! Learning about Michael and his past was really cool. I also enjoyed some of the parts where he (and Ashley) go around town trying to catch the Unseelie who is preying on women. The "mystery/investigation" feel was great in those parts. It did seem to jump around a bit, and I'm not a fan of dual POV because it tends to get somewhat repetitive jumping back in time to explore the same interaction from the different points of view. It does give you a deeper insight into what's happening though (how people say/act one way but really feel totally different.)
Overall, I like the duet better since it has more of a urban fantasy feel than a romance feel. If you love reading romance novels, you will probably love this book! One thing that's great about this series is that each book really is very unique. They all add something a little different to the universe, and the characters and storylines don't get blurred together/start feeling formulaic like happens in other series sometimes.
Shades of Betrayal follows Michael who we met in the original Fae Games series, and I couldn't be more happy that Michael got his own book. You don't have to have read the original Fae Games to follow this, but you do get to meet some characters from Shades of Betrayal more intimately.
Michael isn't an easy man to love, heck he's not an easy person to befriend but Ashley sees something in him, even if most of the time she wants to just walk away from him. Michael works for the Hunt, and he doesn't want Ashley anywhere near it, it's not safe for her. But someone is out there killing women, and Michael needs to keep Ashley safe.
Ashley, newly formed Fae, wants to discover her powers so she can be more useful. A very strong and assertive main character, she's having problems pulling her powers, and it's making her more frustrated by the day. It doesn't help that the man she is supposed to be training with is so pig-headed. But she can't deny their attraction and no matter how crabby Michael gets, she's still drawn to him.
There are a few wonderful quotes from the book that I loved, but I can't share most of them as it might spoil the book, but this one I think encapsulates their feelings well "Some things in life are beyond understanding-beyond logic and reason-and those are the things we'll do anything to protect." Shades of Betrayal has so many elements to love about it, I would classify it as a paranormal romantic suspense.
I loved how Ramsower switched back and forth between the characters in each chapter, it helps to tell the complete storyline and it's so well-written. I absolutely love Ashley because she is a strong heroine, she knows what she wants and she lets you know. She isn't one to back down from a challenge and she knows to get down to the truth of things before reacting. She's fun and at times sassy, I love her personality.
The entire storyline is so nicely done. I love Ramsower's writing style and ability to tell a great story. This was such a fun book to read, it's got the perfect amount of action and suspense while blending in the *steamy* romance we've come to expect from the author. Very nicely done!
After reading the first two books in this series, which both focused on Lochlan and Becca, I was interested to see where the author would take the series next. This third book focussed on Becca's best friend, Ashley. In the course of the previous two books, Ashley found herself turned into a Fae when she was as good as dead. Now she is left dealing with all that this new life has to offer. She had already met and been drawn to Michael. A fae who has plenty of issues of his own. As he and Ashley learn more about each other, they find that they are drawn towards one another. I really enjoyed the interaction between these two characters and the way that the love between them grew. There were a couple of little criticisms with this book, over the previous two. Firstly that I didn't think that the chapters from Michaels point of view worked that well. There was just something about them that stopped them from flowing as well as those from Ashley's point of view. The second thing was that there were a couple of things mentioned in terms of her new powers, that weren't in my opinion really explored. I don't know if this was because this story just filled the one book rather than two. All in all, I really enjoyed it though and liked the relationship between Ashley and Michael. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.
Rebecca's best friend, Ashley, plays such an important role in helping Rebecca begin to find her way in the Fae world. But what happened to her afterward? Well, Shades of Betrayal came along and told me the story I was dying to hear.
Ashley's transition into the Fae world was a little more sudden and jarring than Rebecca's, and she doesn't have the foundation and training that Rebecca does either - and she needs to feed. For Ashley, that means sex - but her whole mindset will about intercourse will have to change. And no, this isn't a book all about her hooking up - it really is a very nice paranormal romance.
Michael was a little too stoic and tough. Even when we got a look inside his head, I wanted to feel more from him. I wanted him to have more of those vulnerable moments - even if they were just with himself. I almost didn't believe his feelings and concern for Ashley because of it.
You have to throw a little danger in to keep Fae stories interesting. And the creature in this one is a doozy. I loved the lore and history behind it though - it tied in with everything going on perfectly.
Overall, a good story, but not my favorite in the series. But I do think that it was a nice way to make sure I knew Ashley had her HEA too.

After reading The Fae Games part one and two, I was really happy to receive an arc for part three. In this book we don't read from the perspective of Rebecca and Lochlan, but from Ashley and Michael's point of view. We had already seen how Ashley got in the crossfire of Ronan and Rebecca. And how Merlin saved her life by making her fae. In this third part we read about Ashley's struggles to cope with her new life and her new abilities. Or better: her lack of ability. Michael is send to her to help her train, but he doesn't seem to like it one bit.
Michael doesn't do relations. So when the feisty Ashley gets under his skin, he tries to treat her like an asshole (and succeeding) to keep her at bay. But he didn't realize that Ashley isn't very easily persuaded. But when bodies are turning up everywhere in the city, Michael may have to trust more on Ashley to help him find the killer.
Suspense, drama, action and romance. What a wonderful mix! Another great story in the Fae Games. Thank you Jill Ramsower for providing the arc! Five out of five stars from me.
I realize it was a series, but so often you can read them as stand alone books, because it's just a side character with a bit part to the first or second book. The beginning of this is massively confusing! It's like it starts to tell us about this big battle with Morgan La Fey and then doesn't. It would have been nice if there was an author's note at the beginning stating that this book begins concurrently with events in book 2 (or book 1) but that's Rebecca's story so go to (title) to read about that event. I would have felt much less confused! As it was this story was more drawn out then it needed to be and frankly for a race that feeds on sexual energy, there wasn't much sex in it. When there was, Ashley is mentally monologuing during it. Seriously? Who really does that? If you can think straight he's not very good at it! The idea is good, however the execution not so much.
I received an advanced copy of Shades if Betrayal for a fair review. This is the third book in the series and I enjoyed it to the very last page. Jill Ramsower is very talented and each book she writes makes me more impatient for the next. Shades of Betrayal not only tells the story of Ashley and Michael, but also delves into their thoughts, feelings and personal history. I love how this story delivers two perspectives on several key events. Ashley’s character is no longer just a supporting friend because now we see her as a brave, independent, hardworking, bombshell who is ready to take on anything and everything this new life throws her way. The passion these characters have is very well explored and I love how steamy it gets! The twists and turns make it very hard to put down and I enjoy all the subtle clues dropped throughout. Excellent read, please keep them coming!
Michael finally gets his own book and that excited me! This is the third in a series and features some familiar faces and some new faces as well. Michael is a difficult person to make friends with, he is closed off and not easy to love, although Ashley sees something she wants and no one will get in her way. I love Ashley and her sense of humor and her strong will! She is new to being fae, but she doesn't let that stop her. Michael works for the Hunt and is terrified of having Ashley get hurt. Plus there is a twisted killer coming after women that just adds to his stress! The switches up POV with every chapter really added to the suspense and the thrill ride f emotions!! I loved how well Jill added on to her series with this book and I can not wait to read what happens next!
This is another excellent book by Ms. Ramsower! With each new installment of Fae Games stories, this new author gets better & better! In the Duet set of books - Shadow Play & Twightlight Siege - we are introduced to the mythical world of Fairies or Fae and to an ever changing lead character, Rebecca. We are also given a glimpse of her best friend, Ashley. Shades of Betrayal delves deeper into Ashley’s world and her brooding Fae protector, Michael. The story is told from both Ashley’s & Michael’s perspectives, which makes for an intriguing and fascinating read! This is another easy & fun book! I’m looking forward to the next installment into the Fae World & seeing the talents of a budding new author shine!
Rating is more like 4 1/2 stars. This was a follow up to the first two books in the Fae Games series, focusing on Ashley's story.
I really loved reading Ashley's story. She is a feisty, high energy girl who doesn't take crap from anyone - something I know I aspire to be! There was lots of angst between Ashley and Michael, and when they finally came together there were fireworks! While I was able to figure out the antagonist after a while, it still kept me guessing as to the why. Also, I loved reading more about Rebecca and Lochlan post book 2 in the series.
Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through BookSends ARC.
Shade of Betrayal was an awesome story. It is the third in a series about two girls who used to be human, but have been changed to Fae. This book follows Ashley, who was changed to save her life. She has always wanted the tales of faeries and magic in her fantasy books to be real, and now they are. Who wouldn't want that? I had a very hard time putting it down, and I look forward to more stories in this series, and anything else written by Jill Ramsower.
I received an advance copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
This is the third is the series and to be honest while it can be a stand alone I think I would have had a better understanding if I had read the other books first. And this is the first I have read from this author.
This was just not for me. I enjoy romance and I enjoy adult content books but this was like watching a porn with no storyline. Seemed they barely said hello and bam they are sleeping together. There is no background story for the most part.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Ashley and Michael's relationship began with a series of mishaps, struggled as Michael continued to keep his secrets, and dissolved with the biggest betrayal imaginable. I found this book charged with intrigue and untold emotional and physical hazards. This high energy narrative captured my attention with its bold characters and exciting storyline. I couldn't wait to see how Michael and Ashley would come to terms with their attraction for each other. It is definitely worth reading. Great Story!!!!!
If you love reading of the Fae you will love this story! Ashley is a human turned Fae. The apprentice of Merlin. Merlin changed her to save her life. So she must learn to adjust. She is assigned to work with Michael to train and learn of her powers. I love how they come together. I also love how she’s a badass and doesn’t back down. She is strong and pushes through. I highly recommend this book, definitely a must read!
Shades of Betrayal is the third book in the series. Although I did not read the first two book I was able to read this book as a standalone.
For me, I had a hard time getting into the book as I felt it had too much of an erotic substance to it and not as much mystery as it alluded to in the description.
That being said the characters I felt were well written and I enjoyed the twists and turns surprising me at the end.
I reviewed an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. This is the author's best work yet. I found the characters compelling, but more importantly I found my self shocked and surprised at a couple of twists and turns, which I enjoy! Its very rare for an author to make me say "Dayum" to myself! I highly recommend.
I received the ARC of this book and I Enjoyed it. I like the way she moved into the other characters and told Ashley’s story and how the transition affected her. I can’t wait to learn about the other characters. It seems like it is set up to be a continuation which id be interested to see how the Huntsman changes or if they will allow women into their ranks. Great job!!!
This book is the third book in this series and will be my last. Still no emotions, a heroine tstl, hero tstl. If you want to try this series make sure you have Kindle Unlimited and use it for this author or you'll be upset you wasted more than your time on this series.
