The first issue of Jacobin I have read, it is filled with insights and interesting ideas. I disagree with certain ideas and statements; however, the big picture is very intellectual. I don't identify as a socialist, but this certainly puts socialist concepts in an easily understandable and captivating light.

This is definitely one to give the not-(yet)-Socialists in your life. Great articles about the necessity of a decent childhood for all, and exultation of “normal” moms. Includes a cute little tear-out leftist kids story, More Bats!

The most striking thing about this issue was the analysis of responses nations have when confronted with declining birth rates among their middle classes. Every western country provides deep incentives to new mothers including health care, care packages, baby kits, reduced childcare, leave of absences from work, etc. Those methods have shown to work. Contrast that with the USA who have had these declining birth rates but have filled the void with migration. However the strategy that has been made here is to take away women's choices and to make methods of birth control near impossible to get whether that's banning them altogether or limiting their use by allowing insurance plans to not cover them.

As a parent and as a leftist this is so good to read. Depressing in many ways, but good that there's this kind of analysis of kid-related politics.
