Wife of the Life of the Party

Rate this book
Wife of the Life of the Party is the memoir of the late Lita Grey Chaplin (1908-1995), the only one of Chaplin's wives to have written an account of life with Chaplin. Her memoir is an extraordinary Hollywood story of someone who was there from the very beginning. Born Lillita Louise MacMurray in Hollywood, she began her career at twelve with the Charlie Chaplin Film Company, when Chaplin selected her to appear with him as the flirting angel in The Kid . When she was fifteen, Chaplin signed her as the leading lady in The Gold Rush and changed her name to Lita Grey. She was forced to leave the production when, at the age of sixteen, she became pregnant with Chaplin's child. She married Chaplin in Empalme, Mexico in November 1924.

The Chaplins stayed together for two years. Lita bore Chaplin two Charles Chaplin, Jr. and Sydney Chaplin. In November 1926, after Lita discovered that Chaplin was having an affair with Merna Kennedy (Lita's best friend, whom she had persuaded Chaplin to hire as the leading lady in The Circus ), Lita left Chaplin and filed for divorce. It was one of the first divorce cases to receive a public airing. The divorce complaint ran a staggering 42 pages and fed scandal with its revelations about the private life of Charles Chaplin. Lita's divorce settlement of $825,000 was the largest in American history at the time.

Lita authorized the publication of another biography, My Life with Chaplin , in 1966. The book was mainly the creation of her co-author, Morton Cooper, who re-wrote her manuscript. Lita was never happy with the many inaccuracies and distortions of that book. Wife of the Life of the Party is not to be seen as a supplement to her early book, but rather Lita's own version of her life, told for the first time.

I hope this document--because it's not literature and sounds exactly like it's been written by a woman in her 80s--gave Lita Grey Chaplin a sense of relief after having written it. Even though there were laws even in the early 20th century about statutory rape (and even if today's attitudes still need to evolve much further), the fields of psychology and childhood development were not well formed and the marriage of a 16-year-old was probably not as shocking as it would be today. Which means that even after having gone through abuse and neglect of a wealthy, powerful older man, Lita Grey Chaplin was still drug over the coals for what people perceived to be her part in this episode. Hopefully we have learned enough today that blame would be squarely put on the shoulders of the creep who took advantage of her in the first place. At any rate, Chaplin would get his due in social media and be required to stay at least nine months out of the spotlight before reurning to the comedy stage...at least that's the going rate for atonement now, apparently?

Very poorly written book and not worth the price paid. Besides that fact that it was obvious that Ms. Grey had written this book because she had an axe to grind, the inclusion of her and Charlie's divorce papers was simply not needed. Although Ms. Grey was not an abused wife by any stretch of the imagination, she tries to present herself as such and is unsuccessful in both acquiring sympathy from the reader or portraying herself as a victim. Rather, she is able to show the world that she was the orginal "gold-digger".

Seems it needs to be taken with a grain of salt, but also reveals Chaplin could be a real jerk, which if you even go based only on his history of statutory rape, and not just with the author, is believable. Half the book are the divorce papers which were just lame to include. A sad story really.

Interesting, covers the same ground as her earlier book with same basic stories told in a less sensational manner. Most of the book is taken up by the divorce complaint, which I didn’t read.

Much better than her first book about Chaplin and an interesting account of this period of Chaplin's life which was, let's face it, the most interesting

I have to say there is a marked difference between her telling of the story vs. his. I read the Charlie Chaplin autobio back to back with this one. I should have known that since he gave his second marriage to Lita only one sentence in his own book, something was amiss. I liked him a lot more after reading his book than hers. As it stands, I am NOT a Chaplin fan (based on his personal life -I haven't actually seen a movie)
