Dr. Judith Lucci is an Amazon bestselling author who writes what she knows. She is the author of the Alex Destephano Medical Thriller Series and the soon to be released Michaela McPherson, Private Eye, a series centered on a retired homicide detective from Richmond, Virginia who really can’t retire.

“Before I wrote fiction, I was an academic writer who published research, theoretical works, text books and just about anything a nurse or college professor needed to publish to survive. The differences in academic writing and writing fiction are dramatic. Writing what I know propels me to pull from my clinical experiences, some good, some not and use popular fiction as a means to teach and advocate for others. My books have three purposes, to engage the reader, to entertain them and to educate about healthcare and perhaps, the darker side of hospital life.

I am a nurse and hold graduate and doctoral degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia. I have always been a reader and a writer and I love it. I am a member of the Virginia Writers Club, The Shenandoah Valley Writers and Sisters in Crime.

This review is for The Haunting of Hillwood Farm by Kathryn Knight.

Callie has a gift of speaking with ghosts, a gift which changed her life forever. When an elderly widow begs for her help, she agrees. From the moment Callie sets foot on Hillwood Farm, she senses danger. A vindictive spirit is terrorizing both Mrs. Turner and her drop-dead gorgeous grandson, Luke. But Callie’s disrupting the ghost’s plans and instead turns its vengeance on her. Accidents turn Callie’s calm demeanor to icy fear. Will she survive long enough to help rid Hillwood Farm of this ghost and more importantly, will Callie and Luke let down their walls and surrender to love?

I can honestly confess this book scared me to death. Once the haunting began, I clung to my tablet and couldn’t look away. The paranormal descriptions were so realistic and life-like, my significant other had to keep telling me to breathe. Think Samara from The Ring and you’ll get a sense of what I’m talking about. By the time I finished, I could only read it in the daylight and with someone else present.

Callie and Luke’s romance is slow-burning which I loved. It also added depth and a sweetness to the otherwise tense-filled story. Sure, they had issues to work through but every couple deals with conflict.

If you’re looking for a spooky romantic suspense, you’ll love The Haunting of Hillwood Farm. Kathryn Knight has mastered the art of paranormal romantic suspense and it’s a must-read!

Favorite Character/Quote: Callie. Her emotional trials when dealing with ghosts and all things paranormal called out to me. She’s gone through so much and by the end of the book, I wanted her to just be able to get a good night’s sleep.

My Rating: 5+ stars

This is a review for Cold Red by Fiona Quinn in the box set. This book started explosively (literally) and continued with plenty of action and adventure. There was a whole series of bad guys - Russians, the Zoric family, the Southern Iron Cross militia group, cyberterrorists, some evil politicians, and even traitors in the FBI! I was thoroughly impressed with Quinn's knowledge of survival techniques - I learned a lot. The book was worth reading for me for that reason alone besides all the other excitement. I highly recommend this book to those who love romantic suspense. I have read many of Fiona Quinn's other books and find them all worthy of purchase!

Review for "Lily's Homecoming Under Fire (Cala Lily Mystery #1)"
by Anna Celeste Burke

Which Wine Goes Best with Murder?

Author Anna Celeste Burke is starting a new series in her contribution to the 21-book "Love Under Fire" box set put together as a seasonal fundraiser for Pets for Vets.

Lily is literally under fire from the first sentence of the book! The family dynamics of dysfunction play a major role as an actress returns home to claim her inheritance. Action-packed and lots of humor!

Review for "RUN For Your Life (Alexandria Destephano Series-Book Six)" by Judith Lucci

Terrorism

In an effort to exact revenge against the infidels who killed his brother, an Al Qaeda chief focuses on a descendant of the Virginia Lees and his family, whose members he holds responsible. A thriller with a lot of action and a glimpse at how the other half lives.
-----------
NOTE: These are the first of the tales I have read and, alone, they would be reason to purchase the set (not to mention the fundraiser part). But the collection is replete with novels from authors I love, so I'll be adding various reviews as I continue to read.

I hope you enjoy reading the books in this box set as much as we enjoyed writing them. Working with the other fabulous authors in the group behind this set has been inspiring. It's been a pleasure to work with such dedicated authors who love what they're doing and who share my desire to do something for others. Bringing pets and vets together is a win-win.

I'm delighted to introduce the Calla Lily Mystery series in this box set. I can't wait for you to meet Lillian Callahan in the debut of book 1--Lily's Homecoming Under Fire. A TV soap star cruising toward midlife, her career ends abruptly when the producers kill off her character.

Lily's at loose ends when her Aunt Letty's lawyer calls. Aunt Letty, who was as vigorous as ever during her recent visit to L.A., is dead and she's left her estate to Lily. When Lily returns home to California's wine country, sparks fly amid a hail of bullets as she and U.S. Marshal, Austin Jennings take cover. Who wants Lily dead? Order your copy of the box set to find out.

Lily's Homecoming Under Fire by Anna Celeste Burke grabbed me from the first page and I didn't put it down until I was finished.

Ms. Burke's descriptive writing of the setting and the characters made me feel right at home. I loved Lily's independence, intelligence and heart as the story reveals more of her aunt's life that she missed while in Hollywood. The action was almost non-stop from the beginning and the reveal was both nail-biting and shocking. The fun seems to just be beginning for Lily since her gal pals, Melody, Zelda, Carrie and Julie from Hollywood showed up and I'm eager to read more about them. It's probably a good thing that Lily's Aunt Lettie had remodeled the home to be a bed and breakfast. The plot was tightly woven with just enough twists to keep me guessing. I can't wait to know more about Lily, Austin, Judy and Jesse as this series progresses.

This book is the only one I've completed so far in this boxed set but I will add more reviews as I complete the other books.

Intrigue, action, adventure and romance I couldn't ask for more in one amazing story filled with awesome characters, fantastic plot twists and turn plus a riveting storyline.

My favourite line from the story Cold Red
'my balls got icicles hanging off them' ok that line had me chuckling it's so good to read a book that makes me laugh at the oddest moments, here we have 2 people trying to survive a snowy wilderness and not get caught by the bad guy's and I'm laughing at a good one liner

The Best Anthology – Ever
This book is a set of 21 complete novels with the proceeds going to help Vets get trained service dogs. I have read several of the books in ARC format. They were all fantastic. With a group of high-powered authors like these, it would be difficult to find a bad book in this bunch. I highly recommend this set of books. For the price, you are getting a great deal on 21 books (less than a nickel each). Even if you only like one or two, it is a great deal. I bought this book and this is my honest opinion.

Cold Red
I cannot lie, started this book with mixed feelings. Was so not expecting to be able to like Steve Finley again, after all the man does have priors for being a total jerk. LOL! (And yes I said “the man” not “the character!) Fiona Quinn has a true gift of bringing her characters to life for me, she has done it again! Now I have another Fiona Quinn series to look forward to and this author cannot write fast enough 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Thank you Fiona! Now hurry up and get back to work!

This is a review of Cold Red.

Action packed and entertaining!

Fiona Quinn's contribution to Love Under Fire takes off like a shot and never lets up. Quinn's bona fides as an action/adventure writer are evident here as the characters are put through their paces. An intriguing plot, smart characters, Russians, cyber terrorists, and your everyday, evil politicians - what's not to love? If you enjoy a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then this one's for you.

Love Under Fire is a collection by several authors of the romantic suspense genre and every sale helps a veteran get a pet.

Excellent reading. It took me a week and I recommend every one of these books; the authors did a great job of connecting us readers to the storyline and characters. This is an outstanding example of what we can do as a community for the vets and their pets and I am proud to be part of it. Thank you all, a job well done!!

The following stories were not a part of the book set (at least not this edition - there was apparently a link to a freebie platform for a time, but I missed it. You have to leave your e-mail address to get those freebies usually, so I'd opt out in that case anyway):

Love Under Fire Anthology

There are a lot of books here. 21. 21 is a lot of books. It will take some time for me to read them all, so I will update this review as I get through them.

Aaron Paul Lazar - The Asylum: A Carmen Garcia romantic suspense novel
Naturally, I started with Aaron Paul Lazar, one of my very favorite authors and the main reason that I purchased this collection. In this book, Carmen finds herself in trouble...in the Asylum! Could there be any place creepier? Not by Lazar's descriptions, there cannot. I was edge of my seat for this entire edition. The plot was creative and well planned. I especially loved the link to his Bittersweet Hollow Series as I have loved all these characters.

Alyssa Richards - Chasing Secrets
Next in line was Alyssa Richards. I don't have any record of having read books from Richards before, but I definitely will now. This book is well plotted and really well detailed. I had my suspicions throughout of how I thought this was going to end, and I was pretty close. The HEA was amazing, and that alone makes this worth the read.

Stephany Tullis - Blue Lady's MISSION UNDER FIRE
I am not really going to rate this one. It appears to be well written, but also appears to be part of a larger story or series. I didn't understand any of it...

Pamela Fagan Hutchins - Buckle Bunny
Buckle Bunny was really fun to read. It has a great story and terrific characters. It drops off abruptly at the end, so I can only hope that there is more.

Anna Celeste Burke - Lily's Homecoming Under Fire
This is a terrific, mystery/love story. I enjoyed everything about it. The characters are solid, and adorable, the story line is almost obvious, but totally mysterious, and the action is non stop. It has also created a world and a family of characters that will fit well together in a series. I am excited to read more.

Margaret A. Daly- Monsters in my Closet
This one wasn't my favorite, but I didn't hate it. It tried to be really mysterious, but missed the mark for me. It is a good plot, just ran on a bit. It didn't need to be this long. Also, the editing was a mess, but it was amusing to find grammatical errors in what was supposed to be a submitted newspaper article.

K.M. Hodge - Summer of '78
This one is a great story, really, really great. The plot is terrific, holding a solid mystery. I loved the characters. I really am hoping this is the beginning of a series, because these are good, solid characters.

Fionna Quinn - Cold Red
This is a great story. It combines mystery, intrigue, deception and terrifying physical peril with a plot and cast of characters that are addicting. It is listed as book 1 in the FBI Joint Task Force series, but it clearly is an offshoot from another series. These characters have too much history, but it was well mapped and easy to follow. I plan to go back and see where this all started.

Linda Watkins - The Witches of Storm Island, Book I: The Turning

This is a good book with a really great story. I read it as part of the Love Under Fire anthology and am excited to read more. It begins in 1685, so the language is a bit difficult to get around in the beginning, but it all falls into place. Having said that, it addresses some issues that are very strongly argues to this day. It has great characters, angst and mystery, and a terrific plot line. It is just really well done.

Suzanne Jenkins - Running With Horses

Running with Horses by Suzanne Jenkins is a good story. It is told in narrative form so it is difficult to become attached to the characters. Sometimes in jumps into first person to give a peek, but not enough to really care. It jumps time frequently too, but this holds true to the characters who are overly cautious. Thankfully, it this book has a great plot so it was easy to stay involved.

Diamonds and Lies by Inge-Lise Goss

This was a really good one. The characters in this one are so believable, and lovable. They keep the mystery, even from each other. And that HEA, awesome!

Tender Enemies by S. R. Mallery

I don't have anything for this one. The characters are confusing and the mystery is confusing. I'm still not sure what happened to whom.

Baja Get Away by Jinx Schwartz

This was a great story. It was a really fun, fast read. I liked that the mystery and angst happened mostly in the background so I could get a better feel for the characters. A run for the border is always a good story.

The Haunting of Hillwood Farm by Kathryn Knight

This is a good story. I felt like it is part of different stories and I was missing a few links, but overall, it is good. Strong characters, and exciting plot, and a solid mystery combine to make this a winner.

Ace Under Fire by Stephanie Queen

I do really like the Beachcomber series, but this one felt like it was more of an excerpt than a full tale. It is still really good characters, plot and intrigue.

Reign Of Fire by Casi McLean

I really liked the plot and characterizations, but it did not ever pull me in. I felt the conversations were too far from reality. People don't really talk like that, so it made it difficult for me to connect. I also dropped a star for editing.

The Code Enforcer by Valerie J. Clarizio

I really loved these characters and this plot. It seemed difficult enough with all the twists and turns. I am not a "soulmates" kind of reader, but I recognize the limits of an anthology and so enjoyed this one tremendously.

Deception Bay by Chris Patchell

Oh, this was a good one! Murder, mystery, malice and romance on every page. I loved the plot and all the characters. This would make a great beginning to a series as I would love to know what happens to the peripheral characters.

**Yep, I really read them all**

I've read a couple of the books in this collection and have enjoyed them. This review is of Cold Red by Fiona Quinn. The book focuses mostly on FBI agent Steve Finley whose job it was to escort two prisoners after a raid. One of his prisoners is named Zelda Fitzgerald. During a snowstorm and after a horrific incident, Finley and Zelda find themselves injured and on the run. Can thy trust each other and if so, how far? Who are the bad guys and who are the good guys? As the truth unfolds, so does some romance. The book is full of suspense and adventure. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this collection. Proceeds from the sale of this collection go to Pets for Vets, a worthy cause.

Cold Red
I Initially came to this book with no prior experience in the world of Iniquus, so I wasn’t carrying any baggage about Finley’s previous bad behaviour. I cannot even begin to imagine how difficult it must be for an author to redeem a character the way it sounds like Finley needed to be. Now that it’s over, I need the next book NOW! I also need to go back and read the whole rest of the series that came before. This story stands perfectly well on its own with just enough teasers about the other stories to make my one-click finger itchy.
I received a complimentary advanced copy of this story from the author.

Deception Bay - By Chris Patchell
I’ve long been a follower of Chris Patchell and I love all and any of her books. Have you read my reviews on her Jill Shannon series; And now, a new book, Deception Bay.
This is unlike the Jill Shannon Books, moving far away from her “normal twisty, creepy kind of tale” and introducing suspense, a little romance and some humour, although there’s still death and danger.

Austin Martell is a best-selling author of cozy-mysteries, living the high life in New York City. He left his island home many years ago and has no desire ever to return. But things change when he receives a phone call telling him his mother has been injured and so, as the only remaining son, he makes the journey to Whidbey Island in the Puget Sound in Washington State.

Nothing appears to have changed in the fifteen years since he left. While his brother died just before Austin left the island, most of his friends are still there. Some are happily married, some not so happily, and of course, some are divorced.

Austin and his mother have no relationship. Her favourite was always Scott, the dead son.

News of his arrival quickly gets around and Austin is the centre of attraction for a couple of females, but unfortunately, not the Police Chief, an attractive young woman to whom he finds himself attracted.

He discovers that his late brother’s fiance, Leigh is now married to his brother’s best friend Blake Parsons, and they are expecting their first child. But Austin is unhappy at the way Parsons treats Leigh.

And then there is his bete noir from college days, Mark Hammer.

Things take an ugly turn when Hammer is found dead in his gaudy McMansion in a setting that’s too close to one Austin wrote about in a book.

We follow Austin through his trips to the hospital, meeting up with his mother’s doctor who is another old friend, his interactions with the local ladies, with Leigh, and with the local Police Chief, and his final meeting with his mother.

This is a fast, short, easy read full of twists and turns. We feel totally involved with Austin and the folk on Whidbey. I suggest you get hold of a copy to read the full story. Will you enjoy it as much as I did? I wonder.

Note – I was given a copy of this book to read by the author, and choose to write a review.

I’ve only read two of these stories so far, but I look forward to reading the others.

Lily's Homecoming Under Fire is the first book Anna Celeste Burke’s Calla Lily Mystery series. This book is a quick and easy read. The storyline is well plotted, the characters are well developed, and the mystery is intriguing. The characters in this fast-paced book are well developed and three-dimensional. Twists and turns, and red herrings and are abundant, and there’s no shortage of potential suspects to keep the reader engaged and guessing until the reveal. I’m looking forward to reading more books in this series and seeing how the characters and their relationships grow and develop.

Lillian “Lily” Callahan is an actress whose acting career took a nosedive, so when her aunt, Letitia “Lettie” Morgan, passes away she packs her bags and returns home to California’s wine country with Marlowe, her obedient and protective Miniature Pinscher. Lily went to live with her aunt when she was twelve-years-old and nicknamed her Calla Lily. Aunt Lettie’s attorney, Franklin Everett, arranged for Lily to stay in a local resort’s private cottage in the woods, but is moved to one of their hotel suites after hired hitmen try to kill her. Deputy U.S. Marshal Austin Jennings had been tracking one of the men, and while the cottage is a disaster, he manages to save her life. One of the responding officers is Denny Saunders, who was Lily’s first serious boyfriend. At the reading of Aunt Lettie’s Last Will and Testament, Lily learned that she not only inherited Aunt Lettie’s home, but also the majority of her estate, including the land the house was built on, her personal property, and the vineyards and her shares of the Calla Lily Vineyards and Winery, LLC. Her mother and three half-siblings weren’t thrilled, but her stepfather, Edward Callahan, and a non-family member, Alexander Davidson, who oversees the vineyards and winery’s financial matters, were more than a little discontent. There’s an instant and mutual attraction and chemistry between Lily and Austin, and they work well together trying to figure out who put a hit on her and why.

Run For Your Life is the sixth book in Judith Lucci’s Alexandra Destephano Medical Thriller series, and it is an intricately woven tale with lots of action, suspense, twists, and turns. Ms. Lucci is very talented in creating suspense and tension with her written words, and her descriptive writing makes the reader feel they are participating in the action as events unfold. From the first page, the reader is drawn into a complex page-turner that switches back and forth to provide the reader with the points of view of the good guys as well as the bad ones. I’m already anxiously awaiting the next book in this series. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading books in the thriller/suspense genre.

Alexandra “Alex” Lee Destephano is on leave from Crescent City Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana where she’s in-house legal counsel. Alex’s son, Adam Jacob Lee Destephano, nicknamed AJ, was born six weeks ago. His father, Jacob Stark, is a former Army Ranger, CIA operative, and counter terrorist. Alex is staying in a cottage near her grandparents, Congressman Adam Patrick and Kathryn Roseau Lee’s, home on Wyndley Farm in Virginia, along with AJ, Jacob, and her loyal companion and protector, Shogun, a beautiful highly trained Belgian Malinois. Security is a priority at Wyndley Farms, and agents in the Secret Service Command Center, which is located close to the main house, have gone on high alert fearing another attack. Things have been calm and quiet for several months, but the agents are aware of recent chatter that there’s another attack planned on the Congressman’s estate. Belle, Wyndley Farm’s resident Civil War ghost, who warns the family against danger, appeared to Alex shortly after she and Jacob spotted a light down on the river near the cottage and main house. Belle’s appearance foretells threats are imminent, and Alex fears she and her family may not survive another attack.

Deception Bay by Chris Patchell

This book started immediately on a high. Short punchy sentences – excitement, fear, disaster, danger. It was all there. Stop reading? No way. My mind raced on with the words, the paragraphs, the sentences. Couldn't avoid getting caught up in the excitement.

Wow! This was a great read. The ending brought tears to my eyes and I am excited waiting to read the next book in this Chris Patchell series.

I mean in the second paragraph “… another wave crests over the bow, washing away the lingering traces of blood.” But we don't know who's blood or why or how. Hooked? You bet.

A couple of other quotes for your delectation: “Cameron is flying as high as Major Tom.” Nothing to link Major Tom to anything. If you don't know - over the head; if you do - a wry chuckle.

Another one: “She squeezes my bicep tighter than a blood pressure cuff.” and, “The Green Goddess On The Starbucks sign beckons me”.

Don’t miss out on this one.

LILY’S HOMECOMING UNDER FIRE
by Anne Burke
What a beginning, bullets being fired, and an intruder tackled her, and told her to stay on the ground. Telling her again, and when his boss calls and asking who wants her dead. Turning the tables, you led them here, who wants you dead. By now we are intrigued to say the least. He is Deputy Jennings, a younger officer comes Denny, and knew her. Asking what she was doing here. Giving her the title "Lily Homecoming Under Fire", the cabin she rented was now a disaster. Seeing Deputy Jennings at the door next morning asking if she should put body armor on first , while bringing her luggage. The guy doing the firing was a pro , did he object to the character being killed off from the show she had been doing. The plot was intriguing, the dialog was amusing, full of barbs between them. Will d efinitely be a winner to read and enjoy. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Twenty-one brand new tales of romantic suspense, and it supports a great cause! Hard to beat that. I read Chris Patchell's Deception Bay and once again, this author has surpassed my expectations. This story is a bit different than Patchell's other work, but the fundamentals remain the same - terrific characters and a story you can't put down. Austin is a great combo of sarcastic and witty, plus he's a bit broken by his past. I absolutely loved this guy! We have two mysteries to solve in this one, one from the past, and one happening in the here and now, and we get a bit of sweet romance for our hero as an added bonus. All in all, another wonderfully entertaining story from this author in a set that promises to be equally entertaining.

The new book, Deception Bay, by Chris Patchell is fabulous. I immediately fell in love with the main character, Austin Martell. I found that having the main character as a male was refreshing and unusual in this genre in my experience. And, the ending wasn’t predictable at all. In fact, I stayed at home on a sunny day to finish reading the book to know the whole story. Chris weaved such an interesting set of circumstances that it wasn’t obvious to me who was doing what to whom. I was a little disappointed that we didn’t hear anything from Austin’s Mom. I think that could have been a whole story as well. Thank you Chris!

This review is for Lily’s Home Coming Under Fire which is the first book in Anna Celeste Burke’s Calla Lily Mystery Series. Right from the first chapter this book drew me in. It was an easy quick read with many twists and turns to keep you turning the pages. It was very fast paced with well-developed characters which are a little quirky. Maybe a hint of a romance to come. Anna kept me guessing until the very end. I highly recommend this book. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

[This is a review for one of the books in the set]

“Truth is stranger than fiction, though, isn’t it?”

Lillian Callahan, new owner of Calla Lily Winery, has left her home in California to settle into her Aunt Letitia’s home and help settle her estate; that is if she can live long enough!

Turns out, things are not all they seem to be when Aunt Lettie’s lawyer is found dead shortly after the will is read. Can Lily and Austin Jennings, the US Marshall that’s helping her, unravel all the mysteries she runs into in such a short time? A better question might be, can she actually survive to find out who, and better yet, why, all this is happening?

Another Anna Celeste Burke heroine to get to know, with help of a new “posse of divas” who seem to be helping introduce Lily’s past to her present- and boy I love the little dovetail from another series in here. If Lillian Callahan is close to being like Burke’s other characters...this will be some wild ride! Highly recommended 5/5

This is such a great collection of amazing stories. There are some " new to me authors" in this and after reading their stories , I now have new authors to follow ! What I love the most about this book is not only are the stories all good to read and different, but ALL the money raised from this sale will go to help Veterans and pets !!! This collection would also be a great gift to someone, as they too can find new authors to follow. These are 21 romance stories that are all so interesting in their types of storylines . Definitely recommend this book to everyone !!! Lilys Homecoming is a good read. The surprising beginning will take your breath away and suck you right in to the story. Good thing there was a sexy man there to protect her. There are many ups and downs in this story and that is what a good writer does, keeps you wanting more
.!! I really enjoy the characters and how they interact with each other. Such a good storyline . The author has done it again !
