What should have been a routine murder investigation, turns into a deadly nightmare...
DI Frank Miller and some of his team are called in by the CID from the Borders when the body of a woman is found crucified in a graveyard.
A troupe of actors arrive in the town to put on a play, celebrating the Centennial of the birth of famous poet and playwright, Hugh Abernethy.
Abernethy was also an agent with the SOE, until he went missing during the second World War.
Now, the plane Abernethy was traveling in has been found after a glacier in Iceland gave up its hold on the five-man crew.
The discovery raises more questions than answers; Where was the plane heading? Why was it so far off course? And where are the top-secret documents he had in his possession at the time?
As the festivities clash with the murder investigation, one of the deadliest snow storms to ever hit the UK envelops the small town, trapping everybody inside with a killer.
Cut off from the rest of civilisation, Miller and his team know they must track down a vicious murderer, who seems to know the real reason why Abernethy was on that plane, and will stop anybody else from finding out.
For some, the drama is real and the stage is set for murder...
John Carson is the author of the DI Frank Miller detective series. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and lived there most of his life. In 2006, he emigrated to New York State with his American wife and two daughters. They now live in a small town in the Hudson Valley where his wife was brought up, with a German Shepherd, a Beagle mix and four cats.
.Interesting plot but left me wondering why H.M. forces would go to such extreme ends to shut off a small town by blowing up a petrol tanker ,several bridges and dumping huge rocks on all the access roads .......to cut it off presumably......but why and then promise to tidy it all up like nice chaps.?Not one of his best in afraid .The feeling of cold weather and snow works well. Finding the banter between the various characters taking up too much space and looks like its padding out the story. However the actual humour is good. The characters believable.
I gave a three star rating in book 3 , due to incorrect grammar and too many relative lines. Then next few books in this series were awesome! I enjoyed this one, but another example of errors: " The two detectives got up and Miller was about to walk through the doorway behind Miller when Monro stopped him." This said, Mr Carson, if you ever require an amateur editor, please respond, I'll be more than happy to assist you. Best wishes, on to next book...
I enjoyed the storyline of this book, and was glad there was no moaning Kim in it, but one thing I’m struggling more and more with is the inconsistencies and editing. I’m finding it in most of this series (and the Harry McNeil and Sean Bracken series’) and it is frustrating. Still giving it 4 stars because I did like the storyline and think there will be a couple of new characters that may appear later in the series but I really wish the continuity and editing wasn’t such an issue. It’s a shame really.
Isolated by a huge blizzard in a border village, DI Frank Miller and 4 other members of Police Scotland are trying to solve a murder. Murders keep occurring while police are becoming more and confused by all these bizarre events. Conclusion is finally reached but too many events were left unexplained, in my opinion. Lots of swearing, poor edit job, and a cliffhanger ending are not acceptable.
Love Frank and the crew, but four stars because the book just ended. The whole murder and mystery wrapped up in two short chapters. There wasn't even anything to suggest that the murderer was the murderer (sorry, weird sentence); we are just told who did it and why. Kind of a bummer.
I couldn't put it down. I love that there are references to places I'm familiar with. A great narrative that pulls you in. I can't wait to start the next in the series.
I liked this book in the series because I wasn't lost in the sauce with there being too many names and characters to remember and sort out page after page.
The book was good, but it left a lot of unknowns, I hope it comes together in the next book. The characters are great and I feel like I know them. Looking forward to the next book.
