This book starts off super fast paced and intense, but then it sort of… fizzles. There are far too many characters for a 200 page book, and far too much talking and not enough action. We’re introduced to A LOT of characters who are involved in Arsenal and Counterstrike. It quickly became clear to me that even though this is labeled as the first in a series, I should have read the Arsenal series first. There was a lot of name dropping, couples from previous books making appearances, and I was generally quite confused. I wouldn’t have minded, but for a 200-page book, this shouldn’t be the primary focus. I personally love when books introduce characters from other books to get you to want to read those books, but in this case, it was too much. I needed more of Ethan and Mari. At this point, the romance felt rushed and unrealistic. It was basically love at first sight (which I’m okay with), but as the reader, I didn’t get to linger on any strong emotions since the book was so short.
The book begins with an attack from someone her ex hired, but we don’t really get much action beyond that. Even the climactic scene was over in a couple of pages without Mari ever being in any real danger. The fact that 10 operatives from Arsenal and Counterstrike were involved (I’m not sure of the exact number) really feels like overkill. I’m okay with little action if there had been a lot of romance, but those scenes were also few and far between.
All in all, it’s only a 3 star read for me, because I like my romantic suspenses to have more romance and suspense.

This book started out strong. Mari has just been assaulted in her apartment because of her abusive ex-husband, Chester, who's also a cop who has persuaded his fellow cops that his ex-wife's accusations aren't to be believed. In walks Ethan, the head of an organization that helps underdogs like Mari, as her personal knight in shining armor. Unfortunately the story falls apart quickly after the initial scene. Too many other characters are introduced in quick succession. Perhaps these are characters who've been in other series by this author, but since this was my first time reading anything by Ms. Carnes, I couldn't distinguish one secondary character from another. In addition, a lot of their dialog dealt with security issues that took too much attention from the supposed romance in the story. In fact, the romance between Ethan and Mari definitely took a backseat. I didn't feel any chemistry between the two. In the scene where Ethan takes Mari out for dinner, there were so many others who had to go to the restaurant as well to ensure their security, but then when things went wrong, they all looked like idiots in my opinion.

Too Many Confusing Supporting Characters & Hardly any Business in the Bedroom

Great plot and characters but she introduced so many different supporting characters without clearly defining their relationships that I was confused. I moved on having become vested already in the main characters and plot and was left disappointed by the lack of business in the bedroom, if you will. I'm not looking for a Sweet Valley High romance. I want something I'd be embarrassed my momma knew I read. Looking at reviews of her other books I see similar complaints, so it all depends what you're looking for.

Going full speed into this world with Mari leading the way I was quickly caught up into her dilemma. Having Ethan come to help spiced it up real nice sinking into this in no time flat. Needing to see her get the help she needs is just part of the magic this one gives with my favorite team also entering in with me seeing more of them. The drama fuels the blood with being pulled to the edge as the heat gets a bit hot. Not missing a scrap I was a bit disappointed when it seems to be over too soon for me. I could read this author and her worlds for awhile.

Terrific Story & Narration🎧 Gripping & Intense!
Protecting Mari
Counterstrike, Book 1
By: Cara Carnes, Operation Alpha
Narrated by: Virginia Rose, Aaron Shedlock

I enjoyed this book immensely, the story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it straight to the end. This is definitely the type of book once you pick up you can not put down because you need to know what happens next. This is my first book written by Cara Carnes and I am not sure how that is but I will definitely be checking out more of her work. She is a gifted author with impressive writing skills, she created characters and storylines that are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with. Marisol “Mari” Santos ended her marriage to her abusive husband but he is not happy about it and is making her life miserable. The problem with her ex is not a simple problem, he is detective in the local police department and any complaints she has is not taken seriously. After a third attack on her she has had enough, the only person who could help her is her big brother, Joe, but he on a mission overseas. He gave her an emergency contact and with her situation escalating she feels the need to call, it is her last resort. Not long after her last resort arrives in the form of Ethan Davenport, an alpha, over the top, protective hunk of a man. He takes to her instantly and goes in protective mode. I loved how everything plays out in this book, the story is fast paced and cleverly plotted with plenty of drama, some angst, mystery, thrilling suspense and a nice buildup to romance. Some of the secondary characters are awesome and I love the purpose of Counterstrike. Cara Carnes, thank you for this great story, I am looking forward to what comes next for those amazing characters.

I listened to the Audible edition, Virginia Rose and Aaron Shedlock are talented narrators and voice artist. They bring these characters to life, give each their own unique voice which makes it easy to follow along and tell who is who. Their portrayal of the characters is spot on, they take each role and make it their own. Virginia Rose played Mari’s role with perfection and Aaron did the same for Ethan, playing the perfect alpha male. The perfect tone was set as they captured the drama of the story as well as all the characters emotions which was heard in their performances. It is always a pleasure to listen to these entertaining storytellers they enhance an already great story to another level of greatness. Thank you for another awesome listen.

Protecting Mari: Police and Fire: Operation Alpha. The first book in the Counterstrike Series, with ties to Cara's Arsenal series and Susan Stokers SEAL of Protection and Badge of Honor Series. While Amazon has ended their Kindle World Series, I am happy to see that many Authors have chosen to continue with it on their own. I love when favorite characters from one series show up in another.

Counterstrike is an Austin Texas non profit, founded and run by two former Delta Force, twins, Milo and Ethan Davenport, with their little sister Jen, an attorney. They grew up in a privileged home with an abusive father. Counterstrike was the brain child of their mother, an organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse. They have expanded the vision to include those who are fighting injustice. They are champions of those whose voices are being suppressed.

Marisol "Mari" Santos, needs help. Divorced more than a year ago from her abusive Austin Police Detective husband. He is using his connection to terrorize her. Her big brother Joseph is a special forces solider currently on a mission, but he gave her a contact to help. Mari has tried to manage on her own, with the police on her husband's side, she is backed into a corner. The latest break in and physical assault is the last straw for her. She calls Tex (of Susan Stokers, SEAL of Protection series. Tex knows her brother and sends her a local connection, Ethan Davenport.

Ethan is taken with Mari, deeming security at their safe houses inadequate, he takes her to the home he shares with his brother. Beefing up their security has now become a priority. Tex puts him in touch with a man he owes his life to, Nolan Mason of the Arsenal, and the women who guided them home, Mary "Edge" Mason.

The Arsenal descends on Counterstrike, they are all in with what the Davenport siblings are doing and want them to have the best they can offer to further their mission. They take an interest in Mari. Throw in with Counterstrike to force a clean up in the Austin PD. Once again Tex lends a hand, putting them in touch with Texas Ranger Dax Chambers,(Susan Stoker's Badge of Honor series). Who gets the legal wheels rolling investigating Mari's ex.

Fast paced, a little steamy, romantic para military suspense. Loved the men and women of the Counterstrike organization. Can't wait for more stories from this series.

Cara Carnes books are an automatic buy for me. I had already pre-ordered this book. I was lucky enough to be given a advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Right from the start we get to see the trouble our heroine is dealing with. Thankfully her brother has given her Tex's number with instructions to call him if she needs help.

Waking in the middle of the night to an intruder who attacks her and steals her cellphone, Marisol finds herself in a position where she can't trust anyone. Least of all the cops who answer the call. She makes the call to Tex and the next thing she knows she has back-up.

Ethan Davenport and his siblings run Counterstrike. An organization designed to help folks in domestic situations. It's Ethan who show up and runs interference with the police at her apartment, and then takes her to his place where she will be safe until they figure all this out.

The wall of blue Mari has continually run up against, will now have a battle. Not only is Counterstrike involved but also the Arsenal. With Tex and the Quillery Edge gathering and evaluating information, plus Tex doesn't wait as requested and calls Dax, which starts the Texas Ranger's investigation into her ex-husband.

Mari has plenty of backup even as her ex Chester tries to implicate her in all sorts of things. I loved the inclusion of all the folks from the Arsenal series it's a favorite of mine. Of course Tex and Dax from Susan Stoker's series are awesome too, I love those guys!

A page turning read, with drama, suspense, romance, laughter and plenty of heat in the bedroom.

I hope Cara writes more in Susan Stoker's Operation Alpha world, I truly enjoyed her take on everyone.

Loved!!!

Counterstrike was founded to help those underdogs who feel like they have no other options. The agency was founded and run by two former Delta Force, twins, Milo and Ethan Davenport, with their little sister Jen, an attorney. They know pain and suffering at the hands of their father and fight to help those in domestic violence situations.

Marisol "Mari" Santos, needs help. Divorced from an abusive man in power. Her ex is an Austin PD detective. And uses his badge and brothers to subvert his control over his ex. Several break in, vandalism, assault just to name a few. Her brother Joseph is overseas on mission and gave her ‘Tex’ # if she needed help. After being assaulted in a B&E she calls for help.
(Tex of Susan Stokers, SEAL of Protection series. Tex knows her brother and sends her a local connection, Ethan Davenport).

Ethan is instantly affected by Mari, and brings her home to protect her. After determining the safe houses inadequate. They need beefed up security and Tex helps with his friends over at The Arsenal. Who Ethan has ties to. Nolan mason and the back office operatives rescued him years ago from the jungle. Arsenal joins the team to clean up APD. Then we see Susan stokers badge of honor family, when Dax Chambers and the Texas ranger step in to assist.

Loved this story. And loved all the characters from different authors and several series. It’s cool to see them interact and tie in seamlessly.

Protecting Mari
Counterstrike, Book 1
By: Cara Carnes, Operation Alpha
Narrated by: Virginia Rose, Aaron Shedlock

Marisol is ready to start her new life. She is recently divorced from a controlling man who is not letting her go. When things get real, she calls a phone number her brother gave her for protection. Ethan comes to her side, and he is immediately taken with her. But he knows nothing can happen. He is there to protect her! Will he focus on his task? Does his heart take control? This story is fast paced and I love the action. There are a lot of characters, some crossing from Susan Stoker's Seal of Protection and Badge of Honor series. I love this concept of the world's crossing and Cara Carnes melds her story right in! Ethan is a strong, alpha male and comes across with that protective feel. Mari is a woman who will not be a victim and she does what she has to. It's suspense and romance all wrapped into a quick story that I would love to see a little longer to enjoy these characters!

Virginia Rose and Aaron Shedlock narrate this gem and it's fantastic. This team compliments each other and their voices are perfect for their roles. Rose brings out all the emotions Mari goes through, while Shedlock nails all the defense to protect her. It's a match made in heaven and a great listen.

Protecting Mari is the first book In Cara Carnes’ series Counterstrike. Ms. Carnes introduces her readers to Marisol Santos a divorcee and Ethan Davenport. Her ex-husband, Chester, is a homicide detective with Austin PD. Chester is an abusive man and continues to harass and stalk Mari. Her brother, Joseph, Special Ops, had her memorize the phone number of a man, Tex, who he holds in high regard. When a man enters her apartment and beats her up, she calls the Austin PD, knowing their efforts will be pointless and fruitless, as they will resurrect the blue shield to protect Chester. However, Mari calls Tex. He sends Ethan, one of the owners and a former Special Ops, to help her. There is an attraction between them. She awakens his protective and possessive streaks. Can he keep her safe? To find out, you must read this book.
As the first book in this series, Ms. Carnes sets a high standard. This book is filled with suspense and action. The romance between the lead characters is well thought out. I enjoy the way Ms. Carnes blends romance, suspense, romance, the idea of family, and ranch life in a small town. Ms. Carnes does a remarkable job with literary devices such as dialog, point of view and descriptive language. Her dialog is solid. Their internal dialog gives readers a glimpse into their true struggles. The dual points of view further endears readers to these lead characters. The descriptive language makes the scenes vivid. Together these devices move this plot along and a smooth pace.

3.5* Loved it, but confusing on all the different characters.

Mari was married to a homicide detective, when she divorced him as he was abusive, him and his police buddies terrorise her. When she is attacked by a man on orders from her ex, she reaches out to Tex, (Her brothers friend.) Tex sends Ethan to help her, Ethan feels an instant connection to her, (Which goes totally against the plot!) Ethan is a former delta who set up Counterstrike with his identical twin brother and attorney sister. Counterstrike helps abused, vulnerable people who don’t have anyone to help them. When it becomes obvious that her ex’s cop friends are plotting against them, they have to fight to keep out of jail.

I really enjoyed this book, but in the first few chapters, it was so confusing with all the different people. I couldn’t follow the story in parts, as they were all having a conversation and I didn’t know who was who! Also the book doesn’t match the synopsis, at all! She is never just a client to Ethan!

Having said all that, I still enjoyed it and I have to say I preferred it to Susan Stoker books. Sorry if that offends anyone. I used to love Susan Stoker books, but just lately they’ve become dull and boring. I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

This is a well written suspenseful novella featuring well-defined characters including several from Cara’s Arsenal series and Daxton Chambers from Susan Stoker’s Badge of Honor series. There’s also some drama and intrigue, special ops action, quite a few laughs and some steamy scenes. I loved the mandate of Counterstrike – to help women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. I was delighted when Quillery, Edge and many of the Arsenal team showed up to lend HERA’s support to their cause. Those characters always bring the laughs along with the muscle. The Counterstrike team are no slouches in the badass department themselves as former Delta Force soldiers, they know all about getting the job done. Marisol and Ethan’s blossoming romance develops sweetly in the background as her abusive ex-husband’s ongoing terrorization tactics play out. The final confrontation and resolution with Marisol’s ex however, was a little anticlimactic for me after the well-crafted and suspenseful buildup. I still enjoyed this story very much though in spite of that. I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Quick, insta-love read, but engaging.

I read this in one night, but despite that and the insta-love it was a good military/security suspense read. Marisol Santos is in over her head and going down fast with her dirty cop ex trying to destroy her, but a last ditch cry for help brings Counterstrike and Ethan Davenport, a former special ops soldier, warrior, and protector, along with his twin Milo (together they are Gemini), their lawyer sister Jen, and a whole cast of characters from CC's previous Arsenal series (that I found hard to keep straight)- Mari finally has Ethan, other extremely protective warriors and women of legend, and some extremely high security tech, at her back to save the day. The suspense was good, and the love was fast, but sweet and sexy. Now I just have to go back to read CC's previous series- that I never finished- to have all the character connections make sense. I believe there's mention at the end that one of the characters was from one Susan Stoker's series also? The only con I had was there was never really a good explanation of why the ex was so revengeful? I guess we'll never know. ;D

Marisol thought when she left and divorced her husband, her problems would be over but they just get worse. Her ex is a cop and he has his buddies harassing her. She moved several times and is working two jobs just to live. She is assaulted in her home and the cops don’t believe her. Her brother gave her a number to call if she ever needed help. That leads to Ethan coming on to the scene. Ethan is former Delta Force and now runs Counterstrike, a company that helps abused women and children. With the help of his brother and sister, they make Mari feel safe. He tries to keep her in the client column but it soon crosses the line. Ethan will do whatever it takes for Mari to be able to live her life without fear.

Great story. If you’ve read any of Susan Stoker’s books, you’ll recognize some of the characters. This is the first I’ve read by this author and it kept me hooked. The only thing was it was confusing at one point when a bunch of people came and I didn’t understand who was who and who was with who. It’s probably best to read the stories before this. Suspense and sexual tension.

I have never read a book by Ms. Carnes before and this one was good and I liked that it was the first one in the series. Apparently, I should have read the Arsenal series first because they were called in to help when Marisol finds herself in deep trouble with her ex who is a cop and won't let her go. Her brother knows Tex from Ms. Stoker's books and she calls him after she is attacked and the police show up but are less than helpful. Tex calls Ethan who is one of the founders of Counterstrike which helps people when perhaps no one else can or will. From there the folks are Arsenal are called in and well not having read that series first at times I was confused. That isn't the author's fault.

The story starts out with an intense situation with Mari being attacked in her own apartment and the race is on to find her ex who has made her life hell. I liked the characters and Ms. Carnes brought in Ms. Stoker's characters flawlessly. I am planning on reading the Arsenal series first and then go back and read the other stories in this series.

Just ok and short

This was a no more than 2 hour read for me. There really wasn't mutch of a story. The plot was fine. I would have liked to have read the Arsenal series first but it isn't KU and after reading this, I would have been upset if I had paid for it. This book isn't really keeping with the Special Forces type themes. Most of those have had a bigger plot than domestic violence. The newest one by Riley Edwards was a crime family and not human trafficking like some of her others but it still had a bigger picture.

This book didn't wrap up all the lose ends, such as our h learning about her financial changes. Some people are brought down but I wasn't clear on why..

I read other reviews stating there wasn't much of a romance or a relationship. That is an understatement. They were barely aline together. One lackluster (non) steamy scenes at the end. NO chemistry.

This book had a lot of potential, but if you're someone who hasn't read any of the Susan Stoker books or the Arsenal series (which I didn't know came before this one), then you will be completely lost through most of the book. So many side characters get thrown at you it gets overwhelming and confusing and it takes away from the story. The book also started out pretty strong and interesting, and then fizzles out in the last half. The ending felt so completely random and rushed that I almost decided to give up on the series.

All in all, I wouldn't say this is a bad book, but it's not a good book for a series starter either. It would have been helpful if somewhere it was mentioned "Best read after xxx series" or something. I have read the second book in the series, finished it today, and it was a big improvement. You still get some random side characters thrown at you, but it's not as overwhelming as it was in this one.

Marisol hoped divorce would signal a new life free from her ex an abusive man, sad that he was a Police Officer, he should have protected her, but that was not what her life was, and after the divorce well things got even worse.
Her brother gave her a name and a number to call if she ever needed help and he was not there.
Enter Tex and that was nice to see an old friend. Who arranges for Counterstrike to come and help her as it was founded to help others like her. Ethan new he would have challenges, but nothing could have prepared him for Mari.
Their lives are now connected, she is not longer fighting her ex alone, all are helping her as things get even worse, even Dax is in the story, I so love seeing old friends.
The story might have been short, but it was good, well told and the characters were really great.

Protecting Mari is fabulous. As part of the “new” Operation Alpha, we get our goto tech guru Tex making a connection with Ethan “Gemini” and Mari. Ethan and his team come swooping down to help Mari out of a tough spot. And they don’t do it gently! It is all Alpha! From Ethan, to his brother and sister, they aren’t afraid to help her out. Mari has a strength that she can’t even see. She has been dragged down and barely holding on. I loved how everything came together.

This was a great introduction to the men and women of the Arsenal if you haven’t read any of those stories. If you have read the Arsenal stories, then this was just bonus on top of a great Protecting story! We got to get more indepth on sides of characters we have yet to really see yet. Team Zoey!

A woman at the end of her rope and the saviour that she needed. I downloaded this book even before reading any of Cara Carnes other books. This is because I'm a huge fan of Susan Stoker's multi-author-verse and I always managed to find new author hidden in this gem. Having a bit of OCD when it comes to "reading order", I put this book on hold and binged through Ms Carnes "The Arsenal" series. I am instantly hooked to Ms Carnes style of writing which is sexy and gritty. Protecting Mari is the first book in Ms Carnes new series "Counterstrike" which features twins Ethan, Milo and their sister Jen. They founded Counterstrike an organisation which helps domestic abuse victims. Highly recommend this book and I cannot wait for Milo and Jen's stories.

Milo and Ethan Davenport are two ex Delta Force, along with their little sister Jen who is an attorney have founded Counterstrike a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic abuse. Marisol is a divorcee on the run from her abusive ex husband who is an Austin Police Detective. After a break in results in a physical assault she reaches out for help and is put in contact with Ethan.
This was a well written fast paced read, that had witty banter, suspense, action, romance and steam. A very enjoyable read that will keep you turning the pages from beginning to end.

Marisol is a divorcee on the run from her abusive ex. He’s a cop so she gets no help from those who are supposed to protect and serve. She gets put in touch with the Counterstrike team. They are men and women who protect those in need like Mari. The Counterstrike team gets some help from the folks in the Arsenal crew (if you haven’t read the books in the Arsenal series from Cara Carnes you really should). Romantic suspense at its most fun. Witty banter, action and romance this story is a total win.

This book is part of the Susan Stoker Special Forces: Operation Alpha World. Mari and Ethan are brought together when Mari calls for help after been victimized by her crazy ex husband. Ethan runs Counterstrike, a protection agency. This is a great book. It has everything. Passion, intrigue, suspense and a whole heap of hot uber alpha males and strong compassionate females. The team from the Arsenal Series also makes an appearance in this book. (Must read series if you haven't already) as well as Tex and Cruz from Susan's world. Totally worth the read!

Loved it

I enjoyed this book for several reasons 1) Tex. He’s a guy to have in your corner. Thanks to Susan Stoker a star was born! 2) well written 3) intro to The arsenal (which I’m downloading tonight. The only issue I had was understanding the letter tracing. Was the dialogue internal? I was confused and it didn’t add to the storyline. This is my first book by this author so I didn’t understand the Arsenal group but kept thinking - hope there’s a series about this group and guess what...there is! Wish it too was part of kindle unlimited but either way I’m reading it.

Protecting Mari

Mari met Ethan when she called Ted for help and Ethan arrived. Mari has had a very bad ex husband detective who was upping his game of torture and destroy to cause her as much pain as possible and not get caught. Her ex, Chester, didn't know what he'd come up against with the Counterstrike Organization. Will Ethan and company be able to keep Mari as well as himself safe from all that is coming at both of them? Will the feelings they have developed for each other be able to grow or will they both remain alive to move forward?

Protecting Mari

Protecting Mari is apart of SFOA but also a spin off from Carnes The Arsenal series. Tex and Dax are the two characters from Stoker's story that made an appearance which was great. Protecting Mari is a good story and gives us a pretty good background on the Davenport's who started Counter Strike. The Arsenal crew shows up and sort of takes over. Mari is the female lead and she has a terrible ex, Ethan aka Gemini is the Davenport who will be the one to protect her. Ethan will fall hard fast for the sweet Marisol. Great addition to SFOA.
