War of the Gods #1

A Court of Blood and Void

Rate this book
They call me beautiful. They call me a monster. Soon, they'll call me death.

As a direct descendant of the God of Death, Cassandra Saélihn is considered the most dangerous monster of all time. Her own mother locks her in a cage to protect the world from her lethal potential. Cass thought this imprisoned life would be her fate, but then four sexy, formidable warriors--a vampire lord, twin fae princes, and a demigod--find her.

They claim she's not a monster, but a powerful weapon, one who can kill the Olympian gods, who have returned to Earth with a vengeance. But Cass has a mind of her own and can't be told what to do, no matter how drawn she is to her four warrior saviors. To their dismay, the four warriors can't tame the wild, cunning, and volatile Cass. But they have a bigger problem--their growing attraction toward her.

To turn the woman they desire into the ultimate weapon and ensure Earth's survival, they'll have to conquer her body and heart, which seems even more impossible than winning the war against the atrocious gods. But nothing turns these alpha males on more than an impossible dare. And nothing turns Cass on more than being stalked.

Warning: This is a full-length reverse harem fantasy/paranormal romance that features one hell of strong woman and her four powerful supernatural mates. It contains brutal battles, explicit love scenes, raw language, magic, swordfights, Greek gods, dark fae, vampires, shifters, and a lot of assholes.

No, no, no. Hell no.

This is basically a Throne of Glass x ACOTAR fanfic, lmao.

Cassandra Saélihn = Celaena Sardothien. SOMEBODY???????? It's like somebody put Riceman, Rowan, Lorcan and Azriel into a book with Celaena. UGH, can y'all imagine? Now, I can't unsee this.

Our speshul girl has these awesome powers that basically turn her into a Mary Sue: she's amazing, she's sassy and it's totally ok that she's a bitch with everyone because she's horny and she's gonna save the world from the gods.

Oh, fuck no.

What the hell was this? Cass is a fucking bitch with everyone, and a little brat. She thinks that the entire world will knee to her, that she is some sort of queen and that everything that she does has no consequences. She's like "fuck you, I can fucking do whatever the fuck I want" to literally EVERYONE.

The author tried to make a tough girl, but instead, she gave us an annoying girl who doesn't know anything. I will not continue this series.

She’s a 15 year old obnoxious foul mouthed brat

It’s a no for me. Like some of the others readers, I couldn’t get into the story once you found out she was 15 and grown men were salivating after her like rabid dogs. Also had issues with the premise of A two year old little girl being locked in a cage, who was only visited by her mother, but knew all about the outside world. The author tried to explain this away by saying that will she slept, she visited the human world and that is the way she learned everything. It didn’t ring true. Also that she taught herself how to control her magic with no one to help her. Lastly did I mention she’s just obnoxious and foul mouthed. I can see why her mother locked in the cage. I’m all for a reverse harem, but lord the all should be consenting adults or a slow burn until the age of maturity.

I knew I needed this as soon as I read the blurb. So when the opportunity to get an ARC came up I took it. And I'm glad I did

Coincidentally I was watching Jurassic World after finishing this ARC and this quote just summed up a lot of this book

"You made a genetic hybrid. Raised it in captivity. She is seeing all of this for the first time. She does not even know what she is. She will kill everything that moves. She is learning where she fits on the food chain and I'm not sure you want her to figure that out."

Cass is the big bad, shes been imprisoned by her Mother her whole life for being a monster who will destroy the world. She has no social skills, no conscience, no moral compass. The only thing she knows is she wants out.

Four beings/beautiful male specimens are sent to save her from captivity and train her to take on the Gods who are destroying the world. They believe Cass is the key to winning the war and generally saving the world

Now Cass has a giant chip on her shoulder, understandable given her upbringing and she's not going to go easily into another cage or do what anyone tells her anymore.
She doesn't know what she is, where her limits are, where she fits in the food chain. So naturally she's going to test that a bit. She pushes their buttons, throws a few tantrums classic teenage like behaviour. But she's not a teenager (well not really) and this book is a bit like her road to adulthood. A journey needed when she has had no past experiences. She knows she's being a bit of a brat with an attitude but cant't seem to help herself.

She's terrified of being caged again and will do anything and everything to prevent that.

I liked that her attitude fit and it was at least consistent the whole way through - and a fit infuriating as teenagers sometimes are. She didn't let the 6 pack of abs or the beautiful harem blindside her into doing what they wanted her to do.

The harem was a bit MEH to be honest. Only two featured heavily in this and the others only introduced. I didn't fall in love with them but maybe Cass's attitude was rubbing off on me

There is a cliffhanger but it didn't bother me as much it maybe should. I don't have any worries that it's not going to go in the direction I think it will.

So freaking good! I ate this book up and can't wait to dive into the second one!

A Court of Blood and Void was, again, really good. I loved it so much. The characters and the mystery were keeping this such a page turner. In it, you will meet Cassandra - she goes by Cass. She's basically a descendant of the god of death. She also really hates her mom. She is weak in her eyes and definitely calls her the C word any time she can.

I wanted to know why this girl was in a cage for most of her life. I also loved how she became such a bad ass chick whenever the word cage was fucking mentioned. The action was so good. The gods, the teasing smut moments, and the guys were extra good too.

Cass was refreshing. I loved her take no shit attitude. She was a boss ass bitch and was underestimated by a lot of people. I can't wait for her to get it on with all the guys because that smut is going to be epic. Already have the second book on my kindle and I'm eager to dive into it!

It's been a while since I've read something that made my right eye twitch so many times. Why did you despise this book so much, Kayla? Well, where do I even start? Cassandra "Cass" Saélihn, our main character, was a tasteless little girl that I found to be brash and exasperating and cruder than hell. Everything that comes out of her mouth makes me want to punch her square in the nose, or possibly spray her with a water bottle to see if she'll stop her ear-bleeding yapping. Here's a few scenarios that really got to me:

Scenario 1:
A sweet-as-pie, old servant man tries to welcome her into a new home and she says, "“Who are you?” I asked the older man, needing to take some control of the situation. “You’d better tell me whose house is this.”"
Scenario 2:
The same old man offers to get her food and it goes like this, "“Welcome, Lady Cass.” Boone bowed, his eyes bright and intelligent and his manner humble. “It’s an honor. If you need anything—” “Do you have food and something strong to drink? I didn’t finish my breakfast today.” My face flushed a little at the reason, but I quickly recovered. “And I fought a good, hard battle on an empty stomach. By the way, don’t call me lady. Call me Cass.”"
Scenario 3:
She brags about her non-existant skills and experience: “That’s not true,” I said. “I have manners. I just don’t bother with them because I’m powerful and dangerous.”

* cue eye-roll and frustrated puff of air *

Screw this girl! She's so damn rude and bratty that I could hardly stand to read the whole book. I seriously struggled to not put it down on several occasions, but I needed to finish it in order to complete my spring reading challenge (35 books in 3 months, hell yeah!). It wasn't just the main character I disliked. It was the entirety of the book. The world building was practically nonexistent,
the other characters were underdeveloped, and the romance just felt...dirty...and not in a hot way. I feel sad that this book was a total dud for me because I'm in love with some of this author's other work and was extremely baffled when I found out that it was written by the same one. I'm sorry I couldn't love it, sweetie!

Not really sure what to rate this.

Her attitude: 1 star
Her stubborness: negative 5 stars
Her childish behavior: not even negative, just non-existent. No stars. Nope.

But I do like the plot, the levels of complications with her mom and the gods, ect. ect.

I'm just NOT,nor ever, a fan of MC's (especially heroines) who are childishly entitled and act like teenagers.

TBH the battle around page 190-ish was much deserved on her part. Someone needs to put her in her place. How those males find her worthy is beyond me. Like over-my-head, in-another-realm beyond me. Her attitude needs some major work. I can only hope maturity is one of the major themes of this series. Because if she keeps this shit up in book 2 I'm pulling chocks.

This series has a ton of what I love to call "potential."
^^ But surely enough, I've been disappointed before. I'm sure it'll happen again.

Either way, I am intrigued. Let's see what book 2 offers.

Incomplete series with each book ending on a cliffhanger.

After being locked in a cage for the majority of her life, the Main character was just super annoying. A 16 year old in the body of a 23 year old, with the maturity of a spoiled 13 year old.
The no character development, the character just move from one confrontation to the next offer the same confrontation in a different setting, with endless drama between the main character and her fated mates.

I got bored and skimmed over 50% of the book.

A Court of Blood and Void is the first book in the War of the Gods seres by author Meg Xuemei X. It is also my first book that I have read of Meg's, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Some parts I completely, completely loved but there were a few things that irked me. We will get to those things later on, but let's start with what I loved. I loved the set up of the series. I really loved that. The plot of this book is excellent.

We start out by meeting Cassandra, whose own mother has kept her locked up in a cage for her entire life. This has obviously shaped a lot of Cass' personality. But she is being told that she is locked up because she is going to become some sort of big bad monster which will bring the end of the world. But soon she is rescued and thrust straight into running for her life.

The world in the War of the Gods series is already a scary place, with the Gods having brought down half of earth and they are slowly taking over other realms as well. And we have no idea where Cassandra actually fits into anything. Her four rescuers seem to think she will be a big savior, but her mother thinks she will be the cause of the realms destruction. For most of the story, we don't have too much information to go on. We are flying blind just like Cassandra. In some ways, I really liked this approach. it helped me connect with Cass. I was getting answers at the same time she was. No one knows exactly who or what she is, but we do know one thing. She is very, very powerful. Throughout A Court of Blood and Void, we watch Cass come into her own and come into her powers. And I am sure we have not even begun to touch on the full extent of her potential. She is one bad MF-er. And I am so, so excited to see where the book is going to go next.

Another part of the story I loved was meeting the four guys. we get to know Lorcan and Reysalor the best because we see them throughout the entire novel. We only get to meet Alaric and Pryder 80% into the story, so I will hold out my opinion of them until after I read the next book. I really liked all of the guys. In fact, I think I liked them all more than I liked Cass. Shhh I know. I don't mean that she was awful, but she is an acquired taste. I get why she is so forceful and bratty and pig headed...really I do. She has been imprisoned her whole life. But she def had a few unnecessarily selfish moments that seemed immature to me and rubbed me the wrong way. Which brings me to the other thing. I wish she was older. They say she is 15, but because she is not human she reached full maturity at 9 and she is really somewhere around 23. But still. I wish she was older than 23. I think that may tie directly into my immaturity issues. I don't want her to lose any of her fierceness, but I would love to see her become a little more reasonable as the books go on.

But other than that, I loved everything about this novel, and I am so beyond excited for the next installment in this series. If you are a fan of mythology, this is going to be a great series for you to check out. It is full of steaminess, epic fights (which are only going to get better) and a really great plot.

Cassandra "Cass" has lived most of her life locked up in a cage by her mother who believes that Cass is fated to destroy the world with her powers. She is rescued by the head vampire and a fae shapeshifter who believe she is the weapon they need to save the world from the Olympian gods that are threatening to destroy it. Cass doesn't want to be used as anyone's weapon, it is just another cage in her view. But she goes with the two guys anyway and eventually meets the other 2 guys of their group - the fae's twin brother and a demigod. This completes her future harem.

So far this series is much better than the other one I started by this author. I was a little worried when I found a typo within the first couple of pages - pair bad editing with choppy dialogue and a cheesy plot and it's a recipe for disaster. But there were not many more mistakes and the plot and dialogue were much better than the other books I read by the author. I actually like where this series is going and am looking forward to the next book. There are still a lot of questions about the conflict with the gods, and we are still getting to know the guys in the harem. Even not knowing them very well, I like the guys in the book better than I like Cass at the moment. I am sure Cass will grow on me when she stops being so whiny and starts kicking butt. Smut level is a 2 out of 5 - we've had some very hot dreams so far about future encounters with the harem. It's like a tempting trailer for what's to come - I like it!

For me I categorise 3* books in two categories, those that were okay, but I'm in no rush to pick up the next one (or might not bother) and those I had my issues with but want to read the next one. I'd put this is the latter, so maybe more like 3.5 stars.

My problem with this book is the things I liked, I also disliked at the same time.

The main character, Cass, is a good example of this. One the one hand she's a kick ass, foul mouthed, independent woman who I had some "you go girl" moments with. However, I then also found her attitude juvenile, arrogant and irritating at the same time, and seemed to swing between the two almost constantly. She also has several TSTL moments, which didn't help. She's been kept in a cage her whole life, which is vile and abusive and would seriously scar you and affect your reactions to things, just instead we just get a lot of "no one's ever caging me again" and "oh look the sun and fresh air is amazing" and "I really want to go and get drunk in a bar because I've never had that experience". It just felt like it was dealt with in quite a shallow way, I suppose.

In fact, shallow is probably a good word to use to describe it. For those who have read a lot of the RH genre, this is one of the convoluted, lazy plots that really only serves to further the romantic progression type of RH.

Despite my moans, I did enjoy it, though. The male characters were pretty appealing, although there was a lot of insta-love/lust and mate bind stuff, which I'm not a massive fan of. The concept was also quote interesting with the plot of fighting against the Gods, but again, I felt like this was a bit of a side line really.

In summary, this is a junk food style, light read with some steam. It's far from the best I've read in the genre, but I've read a hell of a lot worse as well and I definitely want to pick up the next one, if anything due to the way it ended (sexy times cliffhanger...naughty author!)

This book... I just don’t really know where to begin. The “heroine” is an immature, whiny, stubborn, asshole. She annoyed me the entirety of the book, but yet I couldn’t stop reading hoping I would see some drastic character development.... which never happened. I wanted to throw the book across the room every time she spoke. It was almost a DNF, due to her crappy ass attitude and, honestly, there were only 2 reasons I finished it at all. Number one being I was hopeful that she would grow up and become just a little more mature than her usual 5 year old mentality of bossing everyone around, throwing temper tantrums if she didn’t get her way, and being a complete idiot the whole book. Like could I roll my eyes any further? Number two, I mean, 4 smoking hot guys to one.... 🤤... even if she is immature, the sexual content was pretty fantastic and spoke to my naughty side.

All in all, only ⭐️ ⭐️. I won’t be reading the second one in October.

This book has been on my TBR list since it went up for pre-order I think.
The cover drew me in like a moth to a flame.
I had a little idea of what to expect with a title like A Court of Blood and Void.
However, this was not AT ALL what I though it would be like.
And in a good way.

Cassandra has been locked away under a castle by her very own mother who believes she is a monster.
A creature designed to set the world on it's path to destruction.
Cass thought this was her fate, a very long and painful one, until a beautiful man and a panther burst through the door.

Cassandra learns she is not a monster, in fact she is a weapon, but maybe that is just as bad.

The Olympian gods have begun destroying the world, starting with the mortal realm.
A realm that holds a special place in Cass' heart.
They say Cass is the only one that can kill them.
But Cass doesn't take orders very well.
No matter how much the four warrior saviors pull her in with their attractiveness.

Cassandra is one of my new favorite characters.
Her sharp wit and her independence is so refreshing.

We only get to see two of the four warriors really.
Lorcan and Reysalor.
The other two, Alaric and Pryder, are mentioned and we see them later in the book, but they are not the focus of the book.

Lorcan is a vampire Lord.
He rules over all the others.
You find out why toward the end of the book, but it's amazing to see how the vampires bow down to him.
Though there are a few issues with those in his guard.

Reysalor.
He is my favorite.
Reys starts off as a panther and stays that way for a large chunk of the book until something happens to Cass and it is necessary for him to change into his "human" form.
Which is really a fae.

I've read a few reviews and saw where a lot of people didn't really care for Cass.
And I can kind of see where they are coming from.
But I also had to remind myself, she is actually really young, only about 16 years old.
It is stated that she matures differently and is equivalent to a 23 year old.
But remember, she has been locked away for 10 plus years.
The only interaction she has had is with her mother and the dream-walking she does.
She isn't going to be your normal, average woman.
Which I love about her.

Overall, this is a great read.
There is a lot of action.
Interaction between the characters.
And a brewing love story.
Everything you need to make a fantastic story.
I wish I had read it sooner.
But on to the second book in the series.

Highly recommend.

Torn on heroine and her RH

This was extremely hard to like but also hard not to like? I read on because I just liked the storyline but the characters were a totally different issue. Cass was hard to like, I mean you felt her pain, but the way she acted sometimes was just over the top bratty in my opinion. It was hard watching her put herself in danger over and over, but I understood her wanting to finally live her life, you could really understand the feeling of wanting to be free without strings attached. Maybe that was the annoying part? Being mad, but also knowing you really couldn't hold fault with our main heroine. The guys were also hard to like because although the wanted to keep her from harm, I felt they were harming her with the rules they kept installing, any person who has been restricted to the rules of someone who has hurt them for a decade is bond to revolt, s*** I would. So with that all being said in giving this a 3 star review because I'm very torn.

Decent start to a story. The main problem I have is with the FMC. Don’t get me wrong I love me a snarky bad A heroine, however I felt Cass was a little too immature and hostile to live up to the heroine title. Warning insta love and fated mates. I really like how the guys tend to get a kick out of her attitude problem.

I was really thrown upon meeting our foul mouthed bad attitude FMC. Since she had been caged from the age of 2 I had no idea how she new all that fouls mouthed language or had the vague culture references. It made more sense once her dreams were revealed but dang for realz the girl has no manners, poise, or grace. What has she been dreaming about this whole time? She’s a guttersnipe.

I’m hoping in the next book she tones it down a notch or two. So far I like the guys tho really we spent the most time with Reys. I’m interested in seeing where this is headed.

Dnf 69%: I think my main issue with this book was the MC. I think the author went over the top trying to make the MC a Tough Girl™, and she’s just an annoying brat. I also disliked that the author made sure to describe the MC as full and shapely, even though her malnutrition keeps getting mentioned. That’s not how that works.

This story also had some holes in it. The party was utterly stupid. Why the hell would the vampire lord let the MC’s mom or the king in the same room as the MC? Also, in the ambush, no explanation was given for how Dario was out of the dungeon, and the MC suddenly pulls out a knife that we had no idea that she had.

I just couldn’t get into this.

I absolutely loved this book!! 💞
It had me caged in from the first chapter!! Sexy, funny & magical. All of the characters are strong and intriguing but Cass is the strongest of them all. Powerful and cunning, she has her men wrapped around her finger and she doesn’t even know it. This book did not have an HEA but you can see where this story is going, and I can’t wait to get there!!
The narration was absolutely perfect! Victoria portrays Cass in such a way that feel like I’ve known her for years!! She does an excellent job on the male voices as well.
If you like paranormal romance and don’t mind no HEA, then I highly recommend this book!

Loved it.

I loved cass. She was foul mouthed and unapologetic about not giving respect to people who didn't deserve it. Jezabel was a horrible person and I love that cass called her what she is. The plotline is exciting and I can't wait to see where things go from here. I want to get to know more about the guys they are still unknown right now except for one.

Okay first off i know it's fucking weird that she's only 15 but later on in the series we got to know she's like 23 human years so Yeah. I understand why people can't stand this brat and her attitude. But i enjoyed her snarky self and the guys. But i could be a bit annoyed sometimes

This book is truly like nothing I’ve ever read before. I’ve never read a reverse harem book before and I’m still on the fence about the genre itself, but this was a solidly good story. I liked the steamy romance and the plot was great. Cass was a strong female character, but seemed to be a little annoying and childish at times. Still, a good read and I can’t wait for more.

At 48%- I get that she's been in a cage her whole life...but she didn't have to be so mean to poor Fagan now I bet he dies simply because of her actions when he hadn't even done anything wrong to her. She really went around that whole escape plan wrong...why didn't she just wait until they got her magic unbound...oh wait she's not all that smart.

And yeah she got Fagan murdered.....ok for like the first half of the book I really didn't like her. She acted like a very spoiled stuck up brat. But I got over it and kept reading.

Oh my god this just was just awful. I though it was going to be this awesome fantasy/romance book but it was CORNY. There is just so much going on in this book that it made my head spin. It seems like the author knew she wanted to write a fantasy book, but couldn't decide on which supernatural characters so she just included them all. We have fae, vampires, shifters, humans, demigods, Olympians, and every other mythical character you can think of. There was no world building, no character development, and not even good spicy scenes to revive this dumpster fire. The FMC (female main character) was atrocious and very unlikable. I know she had a rough life, and was caged and abused by her mother her whole life, but she was just terrible. Not one redeeming quality to her name. If you value your time, do not read this book.
