I enjoyed the fairytale-esque feel this story had going for it. It was sweet, charming, and full of that trademark snappy banter Anyta writes so well.
With a Cinder-fella type vibe, the story follows Ash Heartford, a hardworking but financially struggling twenty-five year old who works his ass off around the clock to support himself and his teenage sister. Ash’s life is flipped upside down when Roy “River” Riverton, a charming stranger, shows up at the door of Ash’s tiny apartment and informs him that his now deceased long-lost grandfather has gifted him with the deeds to a local bookstore business and adjoining home.
As Ash takes it all in and begins to have the financial freedom to make positive changes in his life, he also finds himself overwhelmed by his strong attraction to River, who befriends Ash immediately and offers constant unwavering support as Ash adjusts to his new, slightly overwhelming life.
Ash and River each have some hangups where relationships and commitment are concerned, which didn’t really make sense to me given their young ages and the personal experiences shared on page, but thankfully the progress of their relationship, from quick and easy friends, to lovers and more, was an uncomplicated affair in itself, and one I found easy to believe in.
This was practically angst free, too. Although I’d usually complain about such, often wanting something a bit meatier and more emotionally gripping to read, I found myself in the need for light and easy this weekend so it hit the spot nicely.
Although I enjoyed the story as a whole, I will admit that I found the beginning portion very choppy and vague. It took me several chapters to get used to the writing style. I couldn’t wrap my head around who the characters were, how they related to one another, or where they even were while scenes were unfolding. The dialogue, in particular, was quite confusing; I had no idea what the characters were talking about during several conversations early on, which lead me to re-reading passages over and over in an attempt to comprehend what was being discussed (which was mostly to no avail). I honestly can’t decide whether this improved as the story went along, or whether I just got used to it and caught on better with continued exposure?!
Ultimately, this story was all things sweet and dreamy, and although something was a tad off for me with the writing at times, I’ll likely continue with the series when I’m once again in the mood for light and easy romance.
