I spend my time cooped up in a little shed that I have converted into a makeshift office/studio. I listen to records and attempt to be as creative as possible, as often as possible.

I generally am unsatisfied with the results, but every once in a while...good things happen.

My first novel, Strawberries, is out now. I spent a few years working on it, and people seem to like it. some days I believe them, and some I don't.

I am working diligently on my next book, which will be nothing like my first book.

I do not generally read horror, however, this one has an interesting twist I was not expecting. Being a fan of FBI shows, I find I figure out the end game way before it arrives, and find this a drawback for many books. This is not a problem with this book, though. The author has created scenes that, while gory, place the reader in the scene and keep them guessing along the way.

The story tells of Lucy, who finds herself at the whim of the very rich and handsome Edward. This poor woman is drawn in by his chivalry and soon finds out how big of a mistake it is to trust in this long-forgotten art. Through many mental and physical trials, Lucy is led to her ultimate destiny.

I found that while the scenes were often horrific the underlying story rang true to life. Lucy, who is of common wealth is led through hell, simply to fulfill the desires of the rich Edward. Follow her journey through the childhood home of Edward as he tries to defend his mother from his abusive father.

The author of the book has done a fantastic job of describing the scenes in a way that the reader can see the action as if it were happening. Though I do not particularly enjoy horror, this one kept me reading to find out what would happen next. Great story for fans of the genre.

Everything seemed to be a horror show. Genius.

Lucy, a cashier at a popcorn store, around 40 years of age, had a boring life. A good-looking guy asked her on a date, and things seemed to get better. But in reality, he turned out to be her kidnapper. What was his motive? She would find out. Or at least she wanted to. Edward Wolcroft, a good looking billionaire, was not what she had expected. “Edward was no Devil, but they could have easily been roommates in college.”

Lucy wakes up tied to a bed in a dark room, partially lit by an orange light bulb. The room she was in was behind the curtains that would allow her to see another room: Edward’s office. While she could see and hear everything that happened on the other side of the glass, she couldn’t do anything else. She was at Edwars’ mercy regarding food, water, and any other basic needs she would have. Things changed when another person was brought in the room, Roger. Soon, they realized that there were many sides to Edward, one of them being the most freighting one. He saw in Lucy and Roger his parents and acted like a sick son in love with his mother, playing games and sick jokes for his fun.

While being held hostage and being physically and mentally abused, memories flashes reminded Lucy of times and lessons learned from her father who taught her how to resist obstacles. She was hunted by him and also by her ex-husband Todd. They often appeared in her hallucinations while she was mostly left alone to stare at an empty office and watch a trio of sharks endlessly make circular paths around the tank.

Between sleeping and waking hours which was hard to define she was often on the verge of death and hallucinations, being dehydrated and starving. Everything seemed to be a show, but there didn’t seem to be a way out. Or was it?

I do not generally read horror, however, I’m glad I’ve read this one. While I’ve tried to pass fast some disturbing scenes, I was left perplexed and almost said BRAVO out loud to the author when a certain twist took place. The only thing that I didn’t like is at the very end. I had so much hope that things will go a certain way, and that happened only partially. I can easily imagine this book to be made in a movie someday. Until then, do read the book.

Characters

The primary character is Lucy. She’s in her 40’s and bored with life. There are other characters, but everything is from her perspective. She’s a compelling character to be sure, in her flawed humanity and unique upbringing.

Plot

This is a psychological horror to the max. There are scenes of grotesque horror built in. If you have any triggers on major button issues associated with horror, best put this down. However, if this is a genre you love, this plot delivers! I can be quite picky about the horror genre and its plots. This book tries to fill in that “mysterious/unknown” element, only to pull the rug out. The feeling of fear, shock, and disgust all played out in an eerie backdrop. You will not guess all of the pieces, because this author hides the truth in unspoken subtly. The truth is far, far worse.

Overall

What a storyteller! It isn’t often that I’m caught guessing at so many plot twists where I have more then one theory. The only thing I saw coming was the ending and I loved where it ended. It was the exact end I expected to happen, saw as a “good” ending for such a twisted tale. Man did it deliver!

Wonderfully written, easy to follow, a true page turner! It’s been a while since I’ve read a good horror story with such intensity. As an aside, this book's cover is perfect!

Behind The Red Curtain by Casey Bartsch will blow you away. This is one of the books you will devour in a day or two. I finished 80% of the book and lost my night of sleep because of it—and I don’t regret it. Casey Bartsch does a swell job inviting the reader into Lucy’s boring life until a man in an expensive suit asks her for a date.

Bartsch did a marvelous job putting the reader ‘behind’ The Red Curtain as you uncover terrifying secrets behind the home and man in charge of it. I loved that even I was afraid of what to expect, but needed to discover along Lucy, who is unable to shake the two men who influenced her life.

This book will leave you feeling like you haven’t pulled away from the characters. The Red Curtain is a delicious blend of an impossible struggle and test of will. I hope this book can become a movie someday.

Woah, this trully was a psychological horror book. This is a story of a woman, Lucy, who is held hostage by a disturbed man, a psycho.

Behind The Red Curtain has a strong opening, which makes you turn pages like crazy. The characters were well detailed, while the plot was captivating.

There was lots of sexual violence and gore. Too disturbing for me at some point to be honest.

However, the writer knew how to create tension and the pacing was excellent. A certain plot twist in the story was particularly interesting here.

So, does it deliver as a horror book? sure it does, it was creepy as f*

Horror Completed

No spoilers in my reviews. Horror is different things to different people. For me, true horror resides in the unknown, the hidden. There is so much hidden in this tale for such a large part of the book, it classifies as a complete tale of horror. It is not supernatural but deals instead with the actions of a man with a sick and twisted mind. I had a very difficult time putting it down and even the really disturbing parts held me in their sway. I admire the author's bravery creating this image of evil. I hold a special place in my heart for independent writers, probably because I am a part of that club. So why only four stars? Because hope died. To me truly great horror leaves a little bit of hope to make a painful journey find meaning. This only slightly diminished my enjoyment. If you are a fan of horror you will want to read this book.

In the first chapter Lucinda is kidnapped and so begins a relentless catalogue of cruelty, brutality and utter misery. The author makes a full frontal assault on the reader’s soul and it is the reader’s joyless task to wade through it with no alleviation, not even the consolation of an engaging authorial voice. I’ve read the dark tales of Edgar Allan Poe with enjoyment, but this is another darkness altogether.
The writing is workmanlike, never more than competent, but up to the task the author has set himself. It's actually, a blessing the author was not a better writer; if he’d had the psychological insight to make his characters three dimensional the book would have been just too painful to read.
I read this book, but I wouldn‘t read it again on a bet. I’m giving it four stars in recognition that the author achieved what he set out to do, and did so with sufficient competence to please the audience for this sort of literature. If you want to delve into the darkness of a twisted, evil mind, this is the book for you. Otherwise, keep out.

I will admit to being a huge fan of psychological horror books and this one doesn't disappoint. There are twists and turns. Right when you think you know what is going on, the author drops another twist on you that you have no idea was coming and you're just sitting there like, WHAT?

I thought I had Edward figured out. I had no idea what the end game of his sick mind was, but I thought we knew Edward. He's a pretty sadistic person who inflicts horrors on Lucy, the woman he's kidnapped. Then, the author did something that's pretty hard to do to me as a reader. Totally shocked me with that plot twist.

This book is super dark and gory. If that's not your thing, then stick to something end, but if you're a fan of twisted books that don't shy away or fade to black, this is the perfect book for you. If I could give it more stars, I would

Behind the Red Curtain is about a woman, Lucy who is kidnapped and find herself at the hands of a merciless psychopath, Edward.
Casey Bartsch's description of Lucy's torture leaves nothing to the imagination and pulled me into a world so dark and twisted that I was left both horrified and mesmerized.
The fact that it was uncomfortable for me to spend so much in the mind of a masochistic predator only pays homage to Casey Bartsch’s creative writing chops. There were parts I had to skim through because there was so much violence but I became so concerned with the fate of Lucy that I read on. And then I surprised myself by being unable to but the book down. This is a cat-and-mouse story like no other. The layers gave it depth and the plot twist at the end: just wow!

Outstandingly creepy! The story’s twists and turns are fiendish, and the ending reverberated in my mind for days. I’m one of those people who enjoy watching horror films with my hands in front of my face so I can hide if the scenes get too scary or too gory. I’m not sure how, but I think I read this entire book with my hands in front of my face. A great example of urban horror and a suspense-filled read!

In my opinion, the best kind of horror has a psychological element to it, a look into the minds of both those causing the horror, and those who are suffering it. This book certainly has that. It is a dark and disturbing read that I enjoyed. The story is creepy and it has some unsettling moments, especially what is asked of Lucy as she tries to survive.
Recommended to all horror fans.

Dad was looking at Lucinda “Lucy (8).” She had cuts/bruises & was bleeding.
Fast forward, Poppin’ Fresh strip mall. The customer was furious Lucinda “Lucy” (42, mgr./salesclerk) didn’t carry Tutti Frutti popcorn anymore.
3 young thugs were cussing/screaming at her.
1 guy had asked her out on a date. Why not.
When Lucy got off work, he was waiting for her.
She felt a sharp sting & that’s all she remembered.
When Lucy awoke a well-endowed woman was going down on a guy as he was sitting at his desk.
She was done & he waved goodbye to Lucy.

Being tied up for 3 days, no food/water she had pee’d herself.
Todd had pleasured himself with Lucy.
Mr. Edward “Eddy” Wolcroft (billionaire) was the kidnappers name, so he said.
Bonnie (assistant) announced FBI SA Henderson was here to see him.
Roger took his turn with Lucy.
1-day Lucy spied Bonnie who was naked/spread eagled on a table & tied in place by barbed wire.
She was a bloody mess. A rubber fake phallus was bouncing in/out of her.
Baxter Building. Will Lucy ever escape the cage she’s is locked up in at times?

Warning: This book contains extremely graphic adult content, violence, or expletive language &/or uncensored sexually explicit material (verbal/mental/physical/sexual abuse) which is only suitable for mature readers. It may be offensive or have potential adverse psychological effects on the reader.

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review, only an honest one. All thoughts & opinions are entirely my own.

A very awesome book cover, & proper great font & writing style. Wow, a very fairly well written erotic psychological horror book. It wasn’t always very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish, but never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great erotic psychological horror movie, or better yet a paid-per-view mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Review: ‘Behind the Red Curtain’ by Casey Bartsch.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers here, so I will stick to my opinion of the book as a whole. Fully deserving of the four stars I think. The book is well written, fluid and quite gripping. I read this book quite quickly as I was keen to find out what happened next. There is some great descriptive language throughout, and some keen observations of real life that are easily relatable.
Behind the Red Curtain offers up two kinds of horror: the visceral, gory kind and the more fascinating (in my opinion) psychological kind. Our main protagonist falls prey to a deeply disturbed, twisted individual. A long time in his hands, we follow her story as a victim, going with her every step of the way as she tries to find her way back to sanity and safety. Not only is she dealing with her present and very real dilemma, but she is also forced to face some older demons from her earlier life; demons she knows very well. Part of her ordeal resembles a nightmare: endless corridors, numerous doors that will not open, escape always so near and yet so far. I think many of us have had nightmares of a similar kind.
The story is imaginative, the gore very bloody, often set out as some kind of horrific display. Real life murderers and serial killers have been known to do this of course, so this device works well within the context of the story. We have a lunatic on our hands, unquestionably. It is quite chilling to think that there have been, and probably still are, individuals like our tormentor in real life. That is what makes the book as gripping as it is.
I don’t want to give away the ending, so I will just say that I am not sure how I feel about it. I really can’t say anymore than that without massive spoilers, so I will just say that it has left me thinking about it a lot, and that can only be a good thing.
If you like well written horror with a heavy psychological aspect and a fair amount of blood and guts to boot, then this is for you.

Lucy thought it might be nice to have a drink with the handsome stranger who had rescued her from the young hooligans. He had seemed nice enough, refined and gentlemanly, with his tailored suit and disarming smile. She would soon discover looks could be deceiving. Imprisoned and tormented Lucy tries to put her father's lessons to practise, to survive the heinous acts driving her to the cusp of insanity as she is forced to watch and experience things no one ever should. The twisted house of torments, crafted by a skewed mind, has become her prison, and if she hopes to live, she must use everything she knows and more.

Behind the Red Curtain by Casey Bartsch is a gripping horror / psychological thriller that will certainly appeal to lovers of the genre. Lucy is an amazing character, and watching her navigate the horrific plot was both terrifying and thrilling. I loved how her psyche alters from beginning to end as events chip away at who she is. Her moxie and perseverance is inspiring as she refuses to play the victim and attempts to keep her wits about her. Her perseverance is astounding, and every moment of her plight has you on the edge of your seat, wondering what fresh horrors lie in wait. This book oozes atmosphere, from great scene-setting to the constantly heightening tension. All the macabre intricacies of a psycho oriented tale, with suspense, gore, and surprises has woven in. If you're looking for a true horror, a twisted, thrilling, and horrific tale that will shock, amaze, and entertain, look no further. Behind the Red Curtain has earned a well-deserved place on my recommended reading books, I was in the mood for a brutal and atmospheric horror, and it delivered on every count.

Behind The Red Curtain is a dark and unsettling tale that took me for a scary ride. It was so twisted and so different than any other book I’ve ever read that it pulled me in from the very beginning and held my interest all the way through till the end.
Although some of the gruesome scenes made my stomach turn, I kept reading because I had to find out what was going to happen next. I must say the author has quite an imagination. It shows in the vivid way he depicts the unnerving situation in which Lucy, the main character, finds herself in and the oppressive and malevolent atmosphere of the place where she is held captive as well as the depravity, sadism and disregard for human life and suffering of the man who has kidnapped her. The book is definitely not for someone with a weak stomach as there are some shocking and sickening scenes described with plenty of gruesome details. But you might like it if you are not too easily scared and you enjoy reading about people in fearful situations.

So... Behind the Red Curtain is a disturbing book. A perfect read for the Halloween season. It was unsettling and a little hard to follow, though that didn’t take away my enjoyment of the novel.
The tale was told in detail, the writing good and it flowed quite smoothly.
It was a little gross at times, which isn’t always my cup of tea. While there was psychological horror, I felt the gore was more prominent. There were times when the amount of detail into the more disgusting themes was unnecessary.
The MC Lucy was an intriguing character and following her while she tried to navigate what is basically a living nightmare was scary and fascinating.
I don’t want to give away too much as that would ruin the read, but I found Lucy realistic and the plot exacting and original. Not sure what I thought about the ending. I would say pick this novel and read it but tread carefully- this novel requires trigger warnings for adult content, violence, and abuse.

I downloaded this book when it was free..I was intrigued by the blurb. It sounded so mysterious and fun. About a third into the book I was so bored that I almost put it down. I was sick and tired of reading a story about a girl strapped to a table watching a man work. That's when I read the reviews. They were saying how much gore was in the book blah blah.. At that point I hadnt read anything remotely bloody or even interesting. So I stuck it out. And I'm kinda glad that I did. The end was way better than the actual story. There was a little bit of gore. Nothing extreme. I think the twist was kinda stupid but still a little bit entertaining. And I love books with unhappy endings. I was on the fence between giving it 3 or 4 stars. I ended on 3.5 rounded up to 4. If only the beginning hadn't drug on for so long.

Wow. Talk about creepy. Some parts of the book were so gross I didn't want to keep reading and at the same time I really needed to know what would happen. Talk about relating to a character in that sense! :O

Then, the end is so unnerving and I am really unsure of what happened and so confused. I could come up with so many conclusions and I'm sure the author wants it like this, but ah!! I need answers!

Behind the Red Curtain is hardcore horror with sharp and nasty edges. So sharp that the reader is advised to handle with care.

Lucy is kidnapped and subjected to unspeakable horror by her handsome and rich captor. Through her ordeal Lucy keeps up a commentary with her late abusive husband and the father who abandoned her.

Though the story had a twist that I didn’t see coming and the book is well written, for me the violence crosses the line from horrifying to pornographic. It just seemed to go on forever. The ending is also abrupt and leaves the reader hanging.

However, if you like your horror rough with a touch of sexual sadism, this book is for you.

Deceptively well written and filled with gross imagery, I was apalled and delighted at the same time. I'm not a huge fan of violence just because and the sexual nature grated on me, but the writing itself kept me invested. I felt that, if a little bit longer, Bartsch could explore the protagonists past more. It would have been the last piece I needed to fully invest my self in the character. As it is, a thrill ride with a decent plot that deserves a read.

Disturbing Read

I truly enjoyed reading this book. Mr. Bartsch can take you to amazing places. This story of a woman, who only wants out of her crappy job and perhaps meet someone nice, is thrown into a horror filled situation. How she reacts and what she must do to survive is disturbing to say the least. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that would like to see the working of a person's mind.

Behind the Red Curtain is a psychological horror story about Lucy, a woman who is kidnapped and held hostage by an unhinged and deranged billionaire. The premise is strong, the writing good for the most part, but a twist three-quarters of the way through the book destroys an awful lot of the build up, ultimately leaving me a little perplexed.

I was drawn in by the strong opening. The kidnap is simple, but the unfolding mystery is great. The author uses sparing information to really keep the reader guessing for the first half, and watching Edward’s unravelling is truly a delight. Edward is somewhere between a Norman Bates character and a Patrick Bateman, and the author does a good job in making him a textbook psychopath. It was interesting to think of these characters when exploring the victim’s perspective.

I also liked Lucy’s character growth throughout the book. She starts off as a frustrated cashier in a popcorn shop, but we see her resilience shining through as she is forced to confront her current situation and her past abuses. Lucy grows more determined and we see that she is a relentless fighter driven by a quest to survive as she plays out Edward’s twisted fantasies.

Up until this point I was engrossed. Then, however, things started to head downhill.

Firstly, the use of sexual violence and abuse is so frequent and uncalled for that it is pointless. It does not drive the story in any way and the reader has to read some drawn out and horrific descriptions for no benefit at all. I get that Edward’s motives are psycho-sexual, but by the end we see that they are not and I was left a little horrified by what had happened throughout. Secondly, the ending really undoes a lot of the hard work that the build up achieved. What starts off strong quickly descends into some twisted torture porn and abandons the tropes we expect to find in a true horror - it is no all abou shock value.

I enjoyed the writing in parts, however it was not perfect. The author has some great phrasing (‘fermented tears of unicorns and diamond dust’ being a personal favourite) and some that widely miss their mark (in one incident, after Lucy suffers a head injury, we read ‘her ears still on a coffee break’ - it kind of dampens the impact on what we expect to feel from such an event). I also found some words were repeated in the same sentence.

It is a shame that a book that starts off so well goes downhill so quickly. The author is clearly talented but I think he needs to revisit some attitudes towards women and sexual violence.

This book was absolutely one of the most disgusting things I have ever read, and I couldn’t get enough. This author took one of the most horrifying situations and wrote it so elegantly, I almost didn’t gag when the mutilation points took place. The plot was so captivating and then he hits you with a great plot twist that you’ll hate you didn’t see coming. Lucy is a highly realistic character but also very inspirational through her resolve. I don’t think I’ve seen a better portrayal of a cat and mouse type thriller and would absolutely recommend to anyone who enjoys crime fiction, twisted psychology and can stomach the gore and torture. It was harsh and creative. His imagery was impeccable and really, I just couldn’t ask more of a story like this. The end wasn’t even disappointing which I fully expected from so much build. It hit all my marks and while I may not have found it to be a touching novel or especially emotional, it was fun and I ate up every word for the pure madness they held.

Interesting plot, poor editing

TW: Rape

There plot is decent and full of surprises. I even rather like the protagonist, Lucy. Unfortunately, the author needs a lot more editing before publishing. I spent a lot of my time sending error reports to Kindle, which constantly ripped me out of the story.

Although this book is very well written and has a story that does pull one in quite easily, aside from that I had a very hard time finishing this. This is disturbing, very disturbing. I have to wonder what possesses someone to write something such as this. I will say I am not a huge horror fan, especially when it is as graphic as this is, yet this for me simply kept getting worse and worse in the disturbing department...I expect nightmares to follow...
If the author was indeed writing for 'shock value', he has certainly succeeded here.
