Truth & Secret #1

The (Half) Truth

Rate this book
From bestselling author Leddy Harper comes a sizzling romance about an aspiring young chef who may discover that the perfect recipe for love involves all accidental ingredients…

Tatum Alexander is so close to realizing her dream of becoming a sous chef she can taste it, but working at her ex-fiancé’s restaurant with his new girlfriend was never in her career plan. To save face and prove she’s moved on, Tatum cooks up a lie that she’s in a relationship with her best friend’s superhot cousin. There’s just one problem: Jason only recently moved to town, and he has no idea they’re already “dating.”

Jason’s a recovering ladies’ man who shouldn’t be on the menu, but that doesn’t mean he’s immune to Tatum’s quirky charm. Giving her lie a kernel of truth, they decide some no-strings-attached fun between the sheets can’t hurt. But as Tatum’s forced to keep making up stories to cover her original fib, she has a hard time separating what’s real and what’s fake—including her feelings for Jason.

With too many tales spun, Tatum can only watch in horror as her collection of yarns begins to unravel, leaving everyone she cares about feeling betrayed. After so many lies, will it be too late to set the record straight? And more importantly, will she be able to convince Jason there’s truth in their love?

Leddy Harper had to use her imagination often as a child. She grew up the only girl in a house full of boys. At the age of fourteen, she decided to use that imagination and wrote her first book, and never stopped.

She often calls writing her therapy, using it as a way to deal with issues through the eyes of her characters.
The decision to publish her first book was made as a way of showing her children to go after whatever it is they want to. Love what you do and do it well. Most importantly Leddy wanted to teach them what it means to overcome their fears.

Not technically a rom-com but there were some seriously funny moments in this. I laughed several times, shoulder shakes and all.
I also enjoyed this book immensely!!!

The story was pretty interesting but it finished in second place to the characters IMO.
It was good but they were better.

Tatum was a total goofball (hence all the laughs). She really does have good intentions but somehow she always seems to say or do the wrong thing and then everything just seems to snowball from there.
Loved her and all the craziness that followed her- so much!!

Jason (sigh! such a lovely man) has moved back home to start over and be closer to his family after the death of his stepfather but he really isn't prepared at all- when he meets the "wonder" that is Tatum (his cousin Kelsey's best friend and roommate).
Kelsey doesn't waste anytime in making it clear to Jason that as to where it regards Tatum- he needs to keep his hands off.
Jason may have been more of a playboy with Kelsey's friends growing up but he is a changed man now and he really wants to prove this to his family . In fact he and Tatum do have something in common, they are both currently recovering from their own personal break ups and resulting heartbreak.

Have to say that is only the second book I have read by this author but I am totally "hooked" now.
They were both very different reads but I "strongly" connected to both of them.
Characters are also definitely her thing. She makes them so real and gives them a lot of depth whether they are male or female.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

Feel free to check out my other 5 star read by her. Oh and ignore the bookcover, it is deceiving as this isn't a frivolous read at all. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Tatum is broken hearted. After dating her boyfriend for two years, he proposes and she couldn't be happier. However, on her birthday of all days, he back pedals with lame excuses. Unfortunately, he's also her boss and rather than give up all that she's worked for, she decides to tough it out. Who cares that he's hired his new girlfriend? Tater doesn't mind having a front row seat to their romance. Obviously. But she also doesn't want to seem like a loser. So what does she do? Tell a lie. And that lie just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And do you know what happens to liars? THEY GET CAUGHT!!

So now you know the gist, right? But there is so much more to this tale. Tatum is as awkward as can be, which makes for some laughs. This girl says and does the wrong things at the very worst of times, but her heart is solid. And the hero... Jason... reformed manwhore y'all!

So my thoughts
🤥 easy and enjoyable read
🤥 likeable characters
🤥 slow build romance, although the fling part started quickly
🤥 low on angst - the conflict was pretty tame
🤥 no muss, no fuss
🤥 I found it hard to buy into these characters actually loving each other because they shared virtually no screen time as a couple beyond their fling. I barely felt the chemistry, which was necessary because... fling!
🤥 Is it bad that I was more interested in Jason's cousin, Kelsey, than the main characters themselves? I wonder if she'll get a book. She definitely drove this story, even if she was only supposed to be a sounding board and advice giver.

Like I said, it was an easy read and I liked it. Between Tatum's antics and Jason turning out to be a really great guy, this story took on a life of its own. I recommend it to anyone looking for a book that will leave them with warm fuzzies.

I am surprise to like this book more than i thought. Even though there are some loop holes in the story.

Tatum got dumped by her fiancee on her birthday. To cover her humiliation, she 'grab' Jason, her best friend's cousin. Jason who is clueless what is going on, playing along. So there it is the cute sweet fake relationship where Tatum has to lie to everyone in order he fake relationship looks convincing.

Along the way she falls for Jason. I like the character development. The author uses all of the second characters into a story. And the main characters evolves very well dealing with their past relationship.

I do not understand why Tatum has to hide her fake relationship from Kelsey. This is the part that i feel lost in translation.

Overall i do enjoy this book very much.

description
So this book was an extremely interesting one for me. I’ll admit, I didn’t start off loving the leading couple. Tatum was a sweet, quirky person, but I wanted to shake her a few times for how far she let things go and why. However, it did keep things interesting. Jason on the other hand, I just think his initial thoughts and feelings on relationships rubbed me the wrong way. His refusal to give second chances is a fact we learn about him quickly and something I, as a believer in second chances, has a hard time getting behind. The real why of his feelings comes later and that helps to soften my opinion towards him. But it was just the way Leddy Harper wrote their interactions and the way

Jason was with Tatum that ultimately won me over. Even when he was denying his heart, his actions spoke volumes. I loved a few of the secondary characters as well. Like Tatum’s best friend/Jason’s cousin Kelsey. She was so loyal to Tatum, even if it was to Jason’s detriment. Even Rebecca surprised me with how much I liked her in the end.

To me, this book was a perfect example of how excellent writing and great character development can change an opinion. It’s also why I prefer to finish a book before I give my opinion on it. Because my thoughts on the leading man were not so fond in the beginning, but by the end I was rooting for a HEA for both of them.

"We were two damaged souls, incapable of a future because we each had a past with the wrong person."

Wow! swoon worthy ending. I loved The half Truth, great book to unwind with. No heavy angst or drama it was just the right kind of book to curl up with and enjoy the characters journey.

What I really love in a book are characters that I can relate to, read and feel like I'm taking part of their journey, laugh with them or at them, swoon at the romance, enjoy the story and finish with a happy sigh.

I definitely got all of that with this book.

I loved Tatum, she's goofy, funny, she's the type of woman who lifts her chin high, sets out do do something brave and then basically it all goes tits up, she's a woman who isn't afraid to laugh at herself.

Jason has been away for a few years working in Vegas and following his stepfathers death wants to be with his family and return to his home town. Jason is also in a relationship or was until his girlfriend doesn't want to leave Vegas where she is a showgirl, not much call for that in a little town I suppose. Anyway Jason moves back home fresh from a break up.

Both Tatum and Jason are in the same circles, Tatum is the best friend of Jason's cousin Kelsey and already a part of the family.

With a past reputation of being a playboy Tatum and Jason have been given orders by Kelsey to say away from each other. Tatum is also getting over a break up.

I loved this slow burn romance, it was hot, funny, I loved the embarrassing moments and I also loved every one of the characters from Jason's mother to Kelsey, it had a great family feel to it, with lots of laugh out loud moments.

This is my first Leddy Harper book and definitely won't be my last, I loved the flow of the plot. The half truth contained everything I love in a romance read.
I am looking forward to reading more from Leddy Harper, I have some catching up to do and I am so spoilt for choice but hoping to dive into another of her books asap.

Told in first person dual pov and leads to a hea.

Fun Story

This was a sweet, funny and entertaining book. Both of the main characters have had their hearts broken by someone they thought loved them. Then a little lie turns things around for them but it may also cause an issue but there are some hot steamy moments you can't miss and the fun banter as well. A really enjoyable book.

I am trying to come up with a few things to write in this review and the only thing that pops in my mind is the word lies over and over again. I was very fed up with all the lies Tatum kept telling to everyone. Up until the end of the book, half of the words coming out of Tatum's mouth are about the lies she kept telling everyone and I couldn't stand it. Jason doesn't find the truth until one of the last chapters and Tatum had everyone believing that he was a horrible person because it was fitting her lies. I kept wishing that she would explain some of the truth to Jason sooner and they would keep up with the lies together, but that didn't happen, unfortunately. One thing I would also have liked to not have read as Jason's previous conquests and specifically about him taking the virginity of two of Kelsey's friends. Who needed to know that. Kesley painted him as the bad guy without that info. There wasn't a single character that was likable maybe with the exception of Michael's new girlfriend who sort of redeemed herself towards the end of the book.

I enjoyed this - oh Tatum what a web she weaved! One little white lie and it gathered speed and grew legs! Loved Jason - he took a while to realise what he had and what he wanted but got there in the end. There was humour, some angst and family drama.

I'm not sure how exactly I've never heard of this new to me author! Her writing style, humor, and witty banter are right up my alley. The characters in this book really make the story work. Tatum is hilarious without meaning to be. Jason is fantastic and has no idea what's hit him when the whirlwind that is Tatum enters his life. Jason's trying to prove to his family that he's put his "player" ways behind him but having Tatum around is making that difficult. Don't miss this laugh out loud funny read. I definitely recommend it.

"I was playing with fire, and if I wasn't careful, I'd end up in flames"

I know, I might sound like a broken record starting my review with: this is one of the books that are not easy for me to rate and review. Although I had my moments with it and a great amount of scenes where I had to laugh out loud, it didn’t change the fact that I had for 1) trouble getting into the story, 2) that at the beginning I couldn’t really connect to the characters until about 50% and 3) that it couldn’t really hold my attention (I got distracted easily).

"...it was difficult to lose myself in my head when I was so busy losing myself in his touch"

However, after hitting the 50% mark things started to change for me. I came to like the direction the story was heading, I loved the interaction between the characters and I wanted to follow their path seeing how everything plays out. Tatum’s embarrassing moments became quickly my favourite parts and so did the parts were Kelsey, her best friend was involved.

"Fun fact: It's much harder to lie to yourself than it is to someone else"

The (Half) Truth is a slow burn, sexy and very charming romcom with a clumsy, awkward but cute heroine and a gorgeous, caring hero that will make you laugh out loud. So, if you are in need of an easy, enjoyable and entertaining read, this book is definitely for you!

"Regardless of the lies we'd tried to tell ourselves, the truth had been there all along"

P.S.: And I totally LOVED the Nicholas Sparks reference ;-)

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This was my first book by Leddy Harper, and I really enjoyed her writing style, the story was different than other “fake relationship” plots and I really liked that in the book. Nothing happened as I expected. Jason was my favorite character, and his family too. They were all too funny. Tatum was a good character, but a lot of her lies could have been avoided, and some parts just irritated me. But the ending was cute. If you like the no-strings-attached relationship type, you might like this book!

I normally LOVE the way Leddy Harper leaves me guessing throughout a story with angst and build-up; however, at the 65% mark of this story Tatum and Jason were both driving my crazy with the wishy-washy decisions that they were both making. I loved the sexual chemistry between Tatum and Jason. I enjoyed the fun banter and goofiness of the situations that they both found themselves in so in the end I really did enjoy the overall story even with some of the flaws I have stated.

This specific video review will be included in the February 2019 wrap-up.

This was a sweet romance!
This was an experience in the ups and downs of relationships and break ups. Tatum makes the story extra fun with her crazy way of dealing with uncomfortable situations. Jason is the hot new man in her direct path. I enjoyed the audiobook version of the book.

“I’m sorry, Jason,” she cried, her eyes sad and remorseful. “The whole thing just spun out of control. One lie led to the next until I was buried under them all.”

What can be worse than being dumped by your fiancé on your birthday? The fact that he is your boss? Or that your chance of win him back fall to the ground when his new girlfriend becomes your new co-worker? For Tatum, all alternatives are her worst nightmare and unfortunately still recent wounds. But for that sauté chef prone to messes and confusion, what's bad can get worse. Tired of the pitying looks of her colleagues and witnessing her ex with another woman, she tells a little lie. After all, what harm is there in making up a boyfriend? But when the suitor is her best friend's cousin and the initial lie turns to a huge one, Tatum has certainly just gotten into the biggest mess.
Jason is back in town. After a recent breakup, he just wants to stay close to his family, get a job and settle down. Upon meeting his cousin's friend, the attraction between the two is immediate. Just like the certainty that she is a walking hazard, accident-prone and totally unpredictable. Too bad her cousin is determined to keep him away from her friend. But he never liked receiving orders anyway.
And a casual encounter with a Tatum handing out hugs ends up being the beginning of the mess. Tatum is buried in lies. Jason has no idea what's going on. The two are a couple. Without ever having a date. As the lies increase and spread, Jason and Tatum get close, and by initiating something real, the chances of future problems increase considerably.
The book is funny, with unbelievable one-liner and situations. Tatum and her propensity to chaos made me feel sorry for Jason. This girl is a danger. As the story progresses, the reader becomes apprehensive of the moment when this confusion will be discovered. The other characters are relevant to the plot and well written. Tatum creates a network of lies that ends up putting Jason in the role of the villain and apologizing to a man who does not give second chances will be her biggest challenge.
The (Half) Truth is a light and fun romantic comedy. But that ends up teaching a valuable lesson about the value of truth in a relationship and the weight of lies. A good reading.

The fastest way to get over someone is to get under someone else...right?
Jason recently moved home to be closer to his family and Tatum is his cousin’s best friend. Both just off of recent breakups, what could go wrong?

Poor Tatum. She is a hot mess. This chick is sweet and full of sass. She is also a walking disaster. After her boyfriend of two years proposes, she is in bliss. Until he dumps her, on her birthday of all days, with an excuse that leaves her thinking WTF just happened.

Fast forward a few months, she is working in the same restaurant with her now ex and his new girlfriend. Talk about awkward. She doesn’t want to be the pitied party in the relationship gone bad so she tells one innocent little white lie...

I freaking loved this book! It was hilarious to point of tears at some parts. Tatum was quirky and Jason was too sweet. I felt they just clicked. They had fun together and what started out as just a fling grew into something more with a lot of laughs along the way.

This author writes her characters with so much depth and I got sucked in and didn’t want to put the book down. I loved this book! It was funny and sweet with a little bit of angst thrown in. Leddy Harper is now added to my 1-click list!

Being dumped by her boss/boyfriend at dinner before her family join them isn't how Tatum saw her birthday going.
Not knowing why and finding herself replaced in both his affections and ( somewhat ) at work isn't that much better..but Rebecca just won't shut up about about Michael.
Tatum is so done with everyone's pity, when pushed about her relationship status she lies...stating she has a boyfriend.. using a picture taken at her best friend weekly gathering.. a picture of Tatum and her best friends cousin and all round heart throb Jason... so when Jason happens to show up she has no other excuse the throw herself at him...and put on a show. The start of so many many half truths...
First read by this new to me author.
I have to say I literally laughed my way through this book at Tatum's awkwardness... there's a scene and my god it was fantastic... both funny and horrifying... that was just so freaking great... Tatum is a wonderful mix of introvert and awkward that made for great reading.
The fact that Jason took her awkwardness in his stride and was actually drawn to it because it made her 'more real to him' was icing on the cake, Making for believable and real to life characters and made for such good reading.
After deciding they are just 'having fun' it was very apparent and apt that these two characters were lying not only to other people to keep their relationship secret... having both recently separated from long term relationships... but also to themselves and each other about their feelings. Which always makes for a great romance read.... and this indeed was most certainly a great read.
Peppered with humour and feels this book was a true pleasure to read. I will be looking out for more from this author.

Poor Tatum gets dumped by her fiance on her birthday, what a jerk. She hasn't moved on and she unfortunately works with him and here comes a new sweet cook who also happens to be his new girlfriend. Trying to save face she lies to her coworkers telling them that she is going out with Jason. Jason is Tatum's bestfriends cousin who Kelsey hates or atleast does not think very highly of him. Jason is just coming out of a relationship that he has been in on for 5 years and he also broken hearted but he can't help but be attracted to Tatum. These two start off a no strings affair but develop feelings for each other, but when Jason finds out that Tatum had lied about him and he looks like a no good cheater he breaks off what little they had and both of them realize that their feelings were so much more.

God, how I hated the h. She such a liar, but the worst thing is she keeps on lying. Does she has no conscience? How could she keep on lying to EVERYONE just like that, without feeling any remorse, like it was her right or something. H was a great guy to forgive him and people around her were cool too to forgive her. If I were them I sure wouldn't because I don't think I'd ever be able to trust a liar, no matter what. All her explanations will be lame excuses to me.

This is my first time reading this author. I had a hard time getting through this one. I think I was getting irritated with Tatum and all of her lies, it was happening a lot. Sometimes boarding on ridiculous. I did skim some because some parts did drag on for me. I did like the texts between her and Jason, they were cute. But I'm saddened to say that this one was just meh for me.

With a blend of forbidden, rom-com and second chances, The (Half) Truth is both sexy and charming.

Tatum Alexander is so awkward it’s adorable. The mess she gets herself into is hilarious. I sometimes cringed and felt bad for her at the situations she put herself into, but she kept me smiling the entire time. She deserves to be happy.

Jason Watson is a sweet guy. He’s starting over and convinced he does not want to date or be in any kind of long term relationship. His actions and concerns towards Tatum clearly indicate otherwise though he’s reluctant to admit it.

Their denial at was happening was sweet. Their interaction and banter was fun and charming, especially Jason’s need to make Tatum at ease and finding ways to spend time with her. They both had things they needed to work through but that is part of the journey.

It was slightly frustrating the impressions some were holding onto and their refusal to drop them. But sometimes you need a friend like that and Kelsey was perfect in that role. She was the supportive best friend that Tatum needed and the cousin to put Jason straight. There was also terrific support and teasing that only a family can get away with.

There are moments of hilarity tempered with some angst and low key drama. There’s love, family and friends. It’s a story I settled into and thoroughly enjoyed.

The (Half) Truth was low on the angst, heavy on the swoon, and the right amount of sweet. This book brought all the smiles and countless laugh out loud moments. I loved the characters and how relatable they were. Just an overall enjoyable read.

Tatum is such a breath of fresh air. I loved her quirkiness and how goofy she was. She puts herself in some awkward situations that had me laughing nonstop. The best part though is the way she takes everything in stride and isn’t afraid to laugh at herself. After a hellish incident, instead of letting it get her down she holds her head high. And this starts the process of her moving on.

Jason has spent years living in Vegas, and now after a tragedy he decides to move back home to be closer to his family. He thought he’d be moving with his girlfriend, but after countless times with her circling around the decision, she’s put it off and Jason’s had enough. They break up and he moves without her. And a fresh start is exactly what Jason needs.

Tatum and Jason were the absolute cutest. These two brought the laughs and especially the fun. I couldn’t get enough of them and just wanted more. I also couldn’t get enough of Kelsey, Tatum’s best friend and Jason’s cousin. She was such a hoot. All in all, The (Half) Truth was a sweet and fun read.

4 Star Review The (Half) Truth by Leddy Harper

Leddy Harper is a new author to me.

Tatum Alexander wants to be a sous chef and is trying to move on from a failed relationship.
The first lie she tells is to indicate she is now in a relationship with Jason.

Of course Jason has no idea about this fake relationship, but is up for a little action, which means her lie is half true or does it?

There were some humorous moments as Tatum is awkward and often said or did the wrong thing.

As Tatum builds lie upon lie until, she has no idea where the lies end and truth (and reality) fit in. As her lies start to fall apart, everyone feels betrayed.

I’m not a big fan of not telling the truth so reading The (Half) Truth was a little challenging at times since the book is based on an initial lie.

I really liked Jason and his family and Tatum grew on me as the story progressed.

What will happen when Tatum finally realises her feelings for Jason have become real? Will Jason believe her or have her lies ruined their chance at love and a real relationship?

I received this book in from the publisher through Netgalley.

Unfortunately I wasn't too fond of this novel. The
Tatum and Jason's connection was lukewarm at best and their interactions was immature. She just gets dumbed by her fiance who she desperately wants back but as soon as she meets Jason it's all forgotten. Then she's kind of cold to him but has to pretend she likes him because she lied to her friends that he was her boyfriend. The writing had no depth and I felt it describes a high school relationship rather than an adult one.
